The Wing, in collaboration with the City of Cold Lake and other partners, is building a splash park next to the Col JJ Parr Sports Centre. Jeff Gaye Valentine’s Special: Love in the Time of War If you’ll forgive the self-indulgence, I’d like to turn this week’s column over to my grandfather, Herbert Victor Gaye. Herbert wrote the following in a letter to Cassie Henfrey of Bulyea, Saskatchewan in 1917 while he was at Camp Valcartier waiting to ship out overseas. “…There are times Cassie dear that I wish we were engaged, and there is only one thing that kept me from mentioning it and that’s this, little girl. I think so much of you, and have a good idea of your disposition, and I well know the risks I am running dear, and you are only a young Lady and I cannot bear to think of spoiling your life or of hurting your feelings. For God only knows, Cassie, I might come back crippled for life or disabled in some Tuesday, February 10, 2015 manner, and if we had of been engaged girl it would be a hard thing for both of us, especially for you, to be tied with an engagement and having to break it. I have laid for hours at night, more so in Regina, and I always thought that if I was seriously hurt that it would be a Godsend to know that I was the only one hurt, girl. “Although dear I know that there is absolutely no difference regarding myself, I feel myself even more than engaged and I know that it is my duty to keep and govern myself the same and in the same manner as if we were married, and yet I think I am only fair in waiting until I return before really becoming engaged and I do hope that you will not think that I am not sincere. I get restless when I think of the months, I hope not years, that part us. But I try to comfort myself by thinking that it will be soon that we will meet again and you will be still Cassie Henfrey and the same Cassie I left behind…” Herbert returned safe and sound, and he and Cassie married. While our deployed members today have the advantages of high-speed electronic contact with home, there is something to be said for the romance of handwritten letters. I’m grateful that my grandmother saved a packet of my grandfather’s letters from overseas – they’re a lasting souvenir of a great love story. Tuesday, February 10, 2015 Keeping Up With the Cadets Lt Stephanie Ramsay 664 Royal Canadian Air Cadet Squadron (RCACS) Cold Lake had a lesson in military history and etiquette January 27 as they took part in their annual cadet mess dinner at the 4 Wing Officers’ Mess. The guest of honour was 409 Tactical Fighter Squadron’s Acting Commanding Officer Maj Yanick Gregoire, who recounted his cadet days and his years in the military. The cadets also learned about 409’s history, including Battle Honours. F/Sgt Natalie Ramsay was the mess dinner’s PMC, assisted by Vice PMC Air Cadet Caleb Abbott. The night was fun and full of camaraderie as many cadets, both old and new, “volunteered” to sing and dance with Maj Gregoire joining in. The night would not have been possible without the many volunteers and parents who organized the dinner, set up tables and chairs, and served the meal. Thank you to all. Loving does not guarantee our enemies will stop attacking us, but it can prevent us from living in fear. In love, it is possible to transform people’s hearts and minds. “It is easy enough to be friendly to one’s friends. But to befriend the one who regards himself as your enemy is the quintessence of true religion. The other is mere business.” – Gandhi With Valentine’s Day around the corner, let us learn to love those we like but especially those we do not. Seek it. Pray for it. “The hunger for love is much more difficult to remove than the hunger for bread.” - Mother Teresa Love Your Enemy Padre Henry Hoy “Hate” is such a strong word. It is easy to hate an inanimate object or an animal, as in “I hate vegetables” or “I hate snakes!” We may even have a strong dislike for certain people. Recent terrorist attacks can stir up feelings of hatred for some of us, feelings beyond the strong dislike. Our terrorist enemies wish to provoke us and cause confusion. Hate has corrupted them and they wish to corrupt us. Let us not give into that temptation. Let us not hate nor fear. Hate and fear often cloud judgment and lead people to make rash decisions. Part 2 Derek Coe, Health Promotion Manager Last week I started you down the path to optimal heart health by introducing you to four of the seven steps to a healthier life. Steps 1 through 4 were: avoid smoking and tobacco products; be physically active; eat a heart healthy diet; and keep a healthy weight. For tips on achieving these, refer to last week’s article or stop by the Health Promotion office. This week I’ll pick up where I left off and introduce you to steps 5 through 7: 5. Keep your blood pressure healthy. There are many ways to keep your blood pressure healthy. Exercise and healthy nutrition are great ways to accomplish this, but they aren’t the only ways. Too much stress can cause your blood pressure to gradually rise to the point where your heart is at risk. Give yourself permission to slow down a little and practice some excellent stress management techniques. One of my favourites is deep breathing. To do this, simply take a deep breath in while counting to five, and exhale while counting to five. This can take anywhere from ten seconds to five minutes. Make sure that your stomach is rising and falling and not your chest. 6. Keep your total cholesterol healthy. Take a look at how much fat you are consuming on a daily basis. Don’t believe everything you see in the media telling you to avoid fat. All fat is not bad, and in fact, you need to consume fat every day – some fat is actually healthy for you! However, limit how much saturated fat you consume, and avoid trans-saturated fat as much as possible. You want to make sure you’re consuming unsaturated fats the most. Stop by the Health Promotion office and we can show you how to identify if a food product has too much fat. factor into this. 7. Keep your blood Keeping a healthy sugar healthy. They battled to a 5-4 win over Winnipeg in the semifinal before dropping a 5-4 overtime decision to Edmonton in the final game Friday. The Fading Fighters oldtimers’ team did not fare so well on their side of the tournament, losing all four of their games. Edmonton beat Wainwright in an allArmy oldtimers’ final.
