The Courier News & Publishing Tuesday, September 22, 2015 Alberta Mayors Visit CFB Cold Lake Jeff Gaye Cold Lake hosted the Alberta Mid-Size Cities Caucus last week, and the mayors and chief administrative officers from almost 20 municipalities visited CFB Cold Lake on Thursday. The Alberta Mid-Size Cities Caucus is a group of municipalities that represent 22 urban centres throughout the province, with a total population of over 900,000 people. The group includes recognized Alberta cities and other municipalities with an urban centre of more than 10,000 residents. The delegates meet to discuss issues of common concern. They were impressed with Cold Lake, and found their visit to the base especially exciting. Mayor Rob Saunders of Lloydminster said it was “a super day. Col Kenny started us off with an orientation to the base and its history, and prepped us for our tour. We’re very fortunate to visit the base and to have some insight into the work that goes on here, the training and the expertise, and to raise awareness of the respect we need to have for the men and women of our air force.” It was Medicine Hat deputy mayor Jim Turner’s first visit to Cold Lake. He had once lined up at the Medicine Hat air show to get a close look at a CF-18 Hornet, but he said the line was too long and he “ just gave up on it.” “This was a good chance to get inside the cockpit and have a good look. It’s amazing that these guys can do what they do.” Delegates visited 410 Squadron and AETE while at the base. They also toured an Imperial Oil operation and several city facilities. “This was our first time playing host to the Alberta Mid-Size Cities Caucus and we are excited for the opportunity,” Cold Lake mayor Craig Copeland said. “We want to showcase our area and make the most out of everyone’s time here. We are very thankful for the help from 4 Wing and Imperial Oil in making that happen.” Jeff Gaye Delegates to the Alberta Mid-Size Cities Caucus toured the base last week. 25,000 Aeroplan Miles could get you to The Big Apple in a New York minute. The Medley CFB Society was created in 1981 to distribute funds ($2 million) from the Government of Alberta for the benefit of residents of the military married quarters. The original objective of the Society was “to provide recreational and community services to the citizens of Medley.” In 1997, the Society radically revamped its direction and marketing strategy to keep pace with changing times. Mission and vision statements were revised to reflect fluctuating economic markets and the increasing needs of the military community. The composition of the Society’s committee was modified and expanded to represent the full spectrum of the military community. The committee is composed of appointed, volunteer and ex-officio members. The appointed and volunteer members hold voting rights, while the ex-officios are nonvoting members who act as advisors to the committee. The appointed members are Regular Force personnel who participate as part of their Wing duties. The Wing Commander is the Chairperson, the Wing Chief Warrant Officer is the Vice-chairperson, the Wing Comptroller is the Treasurer and the Deputy Wing Personnel Services Officer is the Secretary. The ex-officio members include a Cold Lake city councillor, a legal representative and a financial manager. Why? “So whenever people see me drive by, they’ll say ‘look at that S Car go!’” Groan. Turbo is another story about a speedy snail, though this one doesn’t drive a car. A freak accident gives the little gastropod the power of super-speed and the ambition to be the fastest snail in the world. To prove it, he sets out to win the Indianapolis 500. This is a Dreamworks production, which means the animation is superb and the dialogue is entertaining for kids and adults alike. Some A-list actors lend their voices to the characters too, including Ryan Reynolds, Paul Giamatti, Samuel L. Jackson and Snoop Dogg. Turbo is this Sunday’s offering from the 4 Wing Movie Club. It will be shown at 1:00 pm at the 4 Wing Theatre. Admission is free to defence team members, others will be charged a small admission fee. iClipart Personnel Support Programs Be Responsible, Accountable and Honest Tammy Buchanan, Health Promotion Specialist One night my two sons and their friends rented a limousine for fun (the story goes), stopped “Don’t be late, don’t to watch movies at a be lazy, and don’t lie” friend’s house and on the are the top three rules way home, found a girl in our household. Wing Commander Col Eric Kenny, WCWO Alain Roy and Cold Lake CFHA Manager Tania Locke performed the ceremonial sod-turning last Tuesday. Value Master Homes was awarded the contract to build four duplexes (eight units) in the Beaver neighbourhood at a cost of $3 million. The project is part of an $8 million investment in Cold Lake residential housing as part of the Federal Infrastructure Investment Program (FIIP). The new units will each have three bedrooms and an attached garage. They will be completed by the end of March 2016. The program will also fund external retrofits to 75 units, replacing windows, doors and siding to improve energy efficiency. Ten units will be completely renovated, including replacement of electrical, plumbing and heating systems, renovations to kitchens and bathrooms, and improvements to the overall layout. Other improvements are being conducted outside of the FIIP, including 32 external retrofits, new kitchen cabinets in 25 units and 50 new sheds. The Martineau neighbourhood will eventually be destroyed, in a phased approach, and RHU inventory concentrated in the remaining neighbourhoods as new units are built and existing ones improved. The agency has cited the condition of the units, the area’s servicing infrastructure and issues EMPLOYMENT OPPORTUNITIES with access as reasons for the eventual demolition of Martineau housing. “The long-term plan for housing in Cold Lake includes the overall consolidation of the housing portfolio through the phased disposal of the Martineau Residential Housing Area, [and] the replacement of Residential Housing Units in the Athabasca/ Beaver sectors,” a CFHA spokesperson said. “The continued recapitalization and betterment of existing RHUs will also serve to provide suitable housing We are the civilians at home and abroad for CAF members.” Serving Those Who Serve Now Hiring... I appreciate the strong tone and stand that Gen Vance took when he said, “whether you are a leader, a subordinate or a peer, any form of harmful sexual behaviour undermines who we are, is a threat to morale, is a threat to operational readiness and is a threat to this institution. It stops now.” Recently I read a book titled Rid of My Disgrace: Hope and Healing for Victims of Sexual Assault by Justin and Lindsey Holcomb. This book is written from a Christian worldview so it may not be for everyone. The Holcombs have significant experience helping people work through the carnage produced by sexual assault and harassment. I recommend the book to anyone who doesn’t find the Christian worldview objectionable and is looking for guidance on how to address such a critical issue. I found the Holcombs’ presentation of two concepts helpful. They define grace as one-way love. Meaning “grace is love that seeks you out even if you have nothing to give in return. Grace is being loved when you are or feel unlovable.
