Acting 4 Wing Commander LCol Joe Mullins welcomed the Wing’s personnel home. “It’s terrific to welcome our men and women back from this deployment,” he said. “4 Wing is really proud of them, and I know Canadians are grateful for their selfless efforts.” The relief-in-place began in mid-April and will continue rotating personnel until approximately mid-June. The bugs were running thorax-andthorax down the home stretch when Swarming Sam pulled ahead to win by two lengths. Midnight Delight took second place by a proboscis over Count Dracula, who was charging hard along the inside rail. The owners of the speedy steeds took home a purse of a $15 gift card to win, $10 to place and $5 to show, courtesy of our sports-minded friends at Panago. Although the race was run in strict accordance with National Mosquito Racing Commission (NMRC) rules, a slipup on the part of the committee resulted in controversy. The Courier failed to collect names or photos of the owners of the winning bugs, and the NMRC launched an investigation. “We’re satisfied the race was run fairly and the prizes awarded appropriately,” NMRC president Moe “Buzz” Skeeter announced. “But it’s important for the system to be transparent. We will be supervising next year’s event very closely.” The Courier apologizes for the error. Meanwhile, thanks and congratulations to all who took part – this was fun, and we’ll have more contests in future issues. Thanks also to Panago for donating the great prizes. Aboard the boat is a simulated casualty that your partner is tending to in a hoistcapable stretcher. Slightly above and behind you is a yellow and red Bell 412 Griffon helicopter. The helicopter moves in to retrieve you. You see the hoist cable descend to you, you grab the hook and you wait as the boat undulates through a set of swells. The slack in the hoist cable varies as the boat breaks through a larger set of waves. The boat settles out and the cable slack tightens. You attach the hook to your harness, nod to the flight engineer in the helicopter above you, and like Spiderman you’re rising from the boat on your way up to the helicopter. 438 Combat Support Squadron from Bagotville hosted a two week helicopter-specific Search and Rescue (SAR) exercise from Miami Air Station at Opa Locka airport in early March. The purpose of the exercise was to maintain the currency of SAR aircrews that live in the ice locked regions of Canada in the winter. 424 Squadron from Trenton and 417 Squadron from Cold Lake participated in the last week of the training. 417 Squadron attended with one full aircrew plus one extra pilot, with the purpose of introducing the basics of water hoisting to our newest first officers. The training for the remainder of the crew was also invaluable as the conditions in Miami presented different challenges from what we normally see in Cold Lake. The sea state – the height and power of waves and swells – is an obvious hurdle. Our aircrew also found themselves flying in a very busy area for traffic and obstructions. One might ask why we would subject ourselves to a training environment where banner-towing aircraft, kiteboards and low flying aircraft occupy such a small area, but these can be normal conditions during SAR operations in Canada during the summer. Another positive factor for the SAR Techs was the water temperature. This allowed our aircrews to conduct more sequences and sorties in a day than would normally be conducted in a cold water environment. During the exercise some had the privilege of operating from the United States Coast Guard’s Dolphin MH65C aircraft, and a few Coast Guard rescue swimmers had the opportunity to train with our Griffon. Learning how other professionals in our field deal with similar situations helps us keep a fresh focus on our craft. Throughout the exercise 417 Squadron flew 23.2 hours and 11 sorties, and SAR Techs were able to practice their large-wave rescue techniques. We feel honoured to have been offered the opportunity to conduct this training and we look forward to attending again in coming years. Luis R. The Courier News & Publishing Tuesday, April 28, 2015 SISIP Financial Introduces No-Fee Option Joyce Sharp, SISIP SISIP Financial has announced that clients of their financial planning services who choose to file their own income tax returns can now opt out of paying subscription fees for these services. This change is effective January 1, 2015 for new clients and May 1, 2015 for existing clients. People are more knowledgeable of the many alternatives available to help them complete their own income tax returns. There are a number of new and inexpensive choices which reinforce the decision to remove subscription fees and no longer provide a free basic income tax return per year. Those who opt out from paying subscription fees can now put that money - $6.00 per month - towards other investment options. They may consider putting them into the Canadian Armed Forces Savings Plans, a simple savings solution that allows investments for as little as one dollar per day. There are many options available for those who wish to prepare their own tax returns. Most e-filing software kits will walk you through tax credits step-by-step. Canex sells UFile tax software in their stores and online (CANEX.ca) for $19.99 and $39.99; CF One Card holders can download free software through H&R Block and file up to four returns for free. H&R Block also extends a 20 per cent discount on optional tax protection service when filing online for free using their online software. A lter n at ively, Canadian military members and their spouses can download H&R Block tax software for free or receive a 10 per cent discount on their tax preparation services at participating H&R Block retail locations. Canada Revenue Agency provides a list of free certified software packages and web-based programs for taxpayers, and iPhone has apps such as Intuit Turbo Tax and Snap Tax available on iTunes. Snap a photo of your T4, answer a few questions and within minutes, Snap Tax will download your information directly to Netfile. But regardless of where you live, there are no long term studies that show if “vaping” with an e-cigarette has any benefits or harmful effects on the body. E-cigarettes only became available approximately 10 years ago, so it may be decades before there is conclusive evidence as to whether they cause diseases. Vaping is the act of using a battery-operated electronic cigarette to inhale a vaporized liquid. The liquid is in a storage chamber in the e-cigarette, and is heated to produce an aerosol which may contain propylene glycol, glycerin, nicotine and different flavourings. Some e-cigarettes do not have nicotine in them. In Canada, e-cigarettes must not contain nicotine. There are also restrictions on the advertising, distribution, importation and manufacturing of e-cigarettes. As with tobacco, Canadians must be of legal age to purchase e-cigarettes. No electronic nicotine delivery system, that is, an e-cigarette with nicotine, has been approved or authorized for sale by Health Canada. The Canadian Tobacco, Alcohol and Drug Survey showed that in 2013, cigarette smoking was at an alltime low of 15 per cent. That is, only 4.2 million Canadians smoked daily or occasionally. The Youth Smoking Survey found that four per cent of youth in grades 6 to 12 were smoking daily or occasionally. Due to limited knowledge of the long-term safety of e-cigarettes, several concerns come to light. One concern is that the flavoured e-cigarettes may be enticing to youth and may be an introduction to tobacco products and negative lifestyle choices. In 2014, there were more than 450 brands of e-cigarettes and $3 billion was spent globally on these products. That number is expected to increase by a factor of 17 in the next 15 years. This increase in usage may portray smoking as being more mainstream, thereby encouraging youth to take up the habit. But the health hazards are not fully known. What damage might be done by inhaling these chemicals, and what risks might there be to bystanders from the exhaled aerosol? If you want to quit smoking, the Canadian Lung Association suggests you use regulated methods such as counselling, nicotine patches, stop-smoking medications and gum. For more information on these items please contact your local pharmacist. If you are thinking of making a healthy choice, like quitting smoking, please consider joining our CAF Health & Wellness Challenge starting May 1! Call the Health Promotion Staff at 780-840-8000 ext. 6958 for more information. 4 Wing Community Library Located in the 4 Wing Community Access Building • 780-594-7456 Monday to Thursday: 10:00 am - 4:00 pm Friday: 10:00 am - 3:00 pm Last Saturday of the Month: 1:00 pm - 4:00 pm Page 14 The Courier News & Publishing Tuesday, April 28, 2015 CFHA Streamlines Customer Service CFHA CFHA’s Customer Service Program is dedicated to building and maintaining relationships, addressing concerns and complaints, and developing and evaluating new services. Our aim is to ensure the health, safety and security of occupants while protecting the structural integrity of the housing units. Our Customer Service Representatives (CSR) are part of this program and each CSR has received training in processing allocation and maintenance services with a view to increasing consistency at our Housing Services Centre in Cold Lake. The delivery of our service will now be structured under an alphabetical system based on the surname of the occupant. The cells and their CSRs are as follows: Surname beginning with: A to D – Lisa Dwyer E to La – Coreena Cole Le to P – Bonnie Strang Q to Z – Bryana Karsin For new occupants this means the moment they submit an application for an RHU they will be assigned to the appropriate CSR, and they will be served by that same CSR throughout their stay with CFHA. For example, if your surname is Smith, you will be assigned to cell Q-Z for your entire stay in Cold Lake. For current occupants, your file has already been assigned to the CSR responsible for your letter cell and when you inquire about a service, that CSR will be responding to you. All CSRs will answer the phones and initiate work requests. All phone verifications for work performed will be done by the assigned representative of your cell. The aim is to offer consistent service to our occupants throughout their stay with CFHA. The changes are effective immediately. Courriel : cfha-alfc. Right after Easter I flew to California to visit a good friend of mine. He is a Franciscan friar stationed at one of those missions, San Luis Rey de Francia (St. Louis, King of France). The mission is located in the city of Oceanside, just a few kilometres from Camp Pendleton. It was founded in June, 1798 and was the 18th of the Spanish missions established in California. What a beautiful location! Built on a hill overlooking the mountains and the Pacific Ocean, it is designated a National Historic Landmark for its pristine example of a Spanish mission church complex. The church was built in 1811. It is very beautiful and many couples from all over the US choose to get married here. One can visit the cemetery, museum, huge retreat house and explore the pathways around the monastery. During my three day stay I saw many busloads of people visiting the mission. I was fortunate enough to stay in the Franciscan friars’ convent admiring beautifully maintained courtyards full of rose bushes and flowers. In the biggest courtyard there is a pepper tree that was planted here in 1830, huge and still fully alive – it will be 200 years old in 15 years! And the first season’s episodes of the Zorro TV series were filmed there. Walt Disney added a skull and crossbones to the cemetery entrance.
