More construction is on the horizon following Fantino’s announcement of $45.7 million in infrastructure upgrades. Jeff Gaye Associate Minister of National Defence Julian Fantino was in Cold Lake last week to announce $45.7 million in upgrades to 4 Wing infrastructure. Acting Wing Commander LCol Joe Mullins and Cold Lake mayor Craig Copeland were enthusiastic about the news. The Department of National Defence will build a new health services centre, repair airfield infrastructure and upgrade Residential Housing Units (RHUs). The health services centre will be built near the intersection of Kingsway and Queensway, and will combine medical, dental and physiotherapy clinics under one roof. It is expected to be completed in 2017, at a cost of nearly $14 million. Airfield upgrades, including runway resurfacing, are expected to cost $15.8 million, and RHU upgrades will be worth $16 million. The RHU recapitalization will include repairs to exterior finishes and replacement of materials with longer-lasting materials. LCol Mullins described the news as “three big announcements, three big wins for 4 Wing.” He said the projects will enhance the wing’s operational ability. “This base is 60 years old,” he said. While the airfield upgrades have a direct effect on operations, the other issues are also tied in. “Housing is a concern for our members. This will make the RHUs more efficient and more comfortable. And a new clinic is one of the Wing Commander’s top priorities.” He said there may be a future role for the existing medical clinic building as a civilian clinic. “When you support the family, you support the member,” he said. Copeland said the federal investment is “fantastic news.” He said upgrades to the airfield, including addressing existing drainage issues, will help the city’s efforts to attract a commercial carrier to Cold Lake. He said the city or Alberta Health Services “might be interested in taking a look at” the existing medical clinic at the Canex mall to see if a community medical clinic could make good use of the site. The housing upgrades are the best news for military members, and could also be a boost for contractors in Cold Lake, he said. Fantino compared wing infrastructure to a CF-18 fighter. “It requires continual maintenance, diligent upkeep and leading-edge materiel to keep it running at operational speed and an optimum level of deployment,” he said. The infrastructure investments are part of a $452 million project to repair and upgrade Canadian Armed Forces facilities. We also offer our prayers for the speedy recovery of the other three injured members of the Canadian Armed Forces. “Canadians are rightly proud of the men and women who serve in our Armed Forces. We support their families, and we honour all those who make the sacrifices necessary to safeguard our country and our highest values. “This tragic incident reminds us of the very real risks that our brave men and women in uniform assume on our behalf to defend the freedoms that we cherish. “Almost daily we see new evidence of the violent threat posed by the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant. More than ever, it is imperative that we, along with the more than sixty countries in the coalition, continue the campaign to halt ISIL’s spread and reduce its capacity to carry out terrorist attacks abroad and here in Canada. “Our Government and the Canadian Armed Forces take the duty to protect Canadians seriously. Part of that duty requires us to stand tall and shoulder our Tuesday, March 10, 2015 Jeff Gaye All Work, No Play? share of the burden in the fight against ISIL. We are proud to do our part, and grateful to the men and women to whom it falls to carry out our commitment to peace and security. “Sergeant Doiron lost his life in the line of duty. We will honour and remember his service to Canada.” My brother just finished a long career as a Winnipeg firefighter. He’s a good guy with a good sense of humour. But don’t try to joke with him about firefighters playing checkers while waiting for the alarm to sound, or about being paid to sleep on night shift. “You’re not paying us to sleep,” he will tell you gently (but firmly). “You’re paying us to wake up. You’re paying us to rush into your burning house and save you, your family, your pets and your stuff, while everyone else is sleeping.” The same principle applies to the military. Your job is to be ready, though you don’t always know what you’re readying yourselves for. Floods, forest fires, other disasters? Security operations? Peacekeeping? War? Morale is at least half of the readiness equation. Morale includes unity of purpose and group discipline, and that involves camaraderie and a sense of belonging. And goodness knows a little fun doesn’t hurt: in October RCAF CWO Patrick Young challenged the Air Force’s WCWOs to put some fun back into military life. 4 Wing’s WCWO Bob Viel couldn’t agree more. “Serving together should be fun,” he said, “and somehow we’ve overlooked that.” I hope everybody has a great time at Snow Fest this week. Let’s enjoy the daytime activities and the evening events and treat ourselves to some good old-fashioned fun. I can’t design your path for you because then it would no longer be your path.” (Irvin Yalom, When Nietzsche Wept) In the last three months I have been trying to contemplate why people kill themselves. It is the most destructive thing that we can do to the self. I have a friend who killed himself last November. I will not tell you how, but I can tell you that it is grim and that he died alone. In this life we know of someone who has contemplated this step. We know them because we are aware of the famous personalities like Robin Williams who died in December. How do we help? I have no pat answer. I could choose to blame myself for not being there for my friend. However, in the light of day, I cannot control his choice. He made his own path. I believe that his path was not an easy one. It is not rational and it is probably dark and sad. The 4 Wing men’s team played some strong sets but didn’t win a match. Their coach, Capt Will Hubbard, said they lost some players to 4 Wing’s ops tempo, “but the players we had did very well. We weren’t losing by much, so that tells us we were competitive.” Capt Jill Bristow coached the 4 Wing women’s squad. She singled out Cpl Jan O’Toole, who served a six-point run in a clutch situation and Pte Tabitha Borisenko, whose defensive play helped keep the team in the game. Capt Bristow said the team is disappointed not to be going to Nationals, but they give full marks to Winnipeg for the win. “Our team did really well. We worked really hard all year,” she said. Are there some easy ways to help people eat healthier at work? Three little changes may help get you on the track to healthy eating in the workplace. Research showed one way to promote healthy eating at work is to have fruit in the break room. If the fruit was one of the first things people saw, they tended to select it as a snack. If it was in a nice bowl in a well-lit place, even better! Even in the cafeteria, the first thing you should put on your plate is a piece of fruit. Brian Wansink found that when people were given a piece of fruit at the beginning of their lunch-line journey, they continued to make healthier food choices. In contrast, if they received a cookie as their first item, they tended to choose less healthy foods for their whole meal. Simply having a healthy option at the beginning of the line helped people eat better. Research also shows that people eat healthier when they have no candy in or on their desk. People with candies on their desk weighed up to fifteen pounds more than those without. People who had a clear candy dish on their desk ate on average nine candies, but if the dish was on a table six feet away they only ate four pieces. Spot a Typo? Coffee’s On Us. Spelling mistakes and typographical errors happen to the best of us.
