With the latest group of personnel now deployed to Kuwait, we will continue to uphold our first and most important priority; support to our members and their families. The chain of command as well as organizations like PSP and the MFRC exist to give you the support you need, and we encourage you to seek out as many opportunities to engage with them as possible. One of the newest support programs that I want to highlight is the 4 Wing Movie Club. The club recently held their official opening with their first showing of a children’s movie on May 9. Each week the 4 Wing Movie Club will show a movie at the Wing Theatre at no cost to our Defence Team members and their families. The intent is to show one English, French, Teenager and Children’s movie each month; popcorn and pop will be available at a very reasonable price. Simply show your CF1 Appreciation Card and you get in for free. This Movie Club exists to support you, so your feedback and ideas on how to enhance this opportunity are welcomed. This support program and others like it are in place to make the lives of our members and their families that much better. The Wing Chief and I would like to recognize the selfless efforts extended by everyone to include numerous volunteers who support our community. As the summer months quickly approach, we will be saying farewell to some members and their families and welcoming new arrivals to Cold Lake. Throughout this time, the Wing Chief and I encourage you to enjoy what Cold Lake has to offer. Jeff Gaye Cold Lake is Full of Cold Water. The people who named this place could have called it anything. Big Lake, Wavy Lake, Sparkly Lake, Wet Lake – they chose Cold Lake for a reason. Fifty members of 1 AMS people took the plunge in the icy waters of Cold Lake last Thursday while their comrades cheered them on and donated generously to the squadron’s morale fund. The event raised about $3,000. There was a great atmosphere at the Provincial Park beach for the swim. Participants wore costumes, there was plenty of hot coffee and a healthy fire was burning to warm the swimmers after their dip. Even in the shallow water, safety was a consideration: a SAR Tech was on hand to help anyone who might find themselves in distress. To bring you this story, your reporter stood in knee-deep water for almost five numbing minutes. When I came out, my feet were so thoroughly frozen I could have walked across broken glass and not felt a thing. (I knew the job was dangerous when I took it.) Those who took the full-body plunge get full marks for courage and for squadron spirit. The project was the initiative of the squadron’s morale fund committee, chaired by Sgt Fabio Palazzi. With the blessing of LCol Alexander and CWO Fleet, the unit pulled together to make something good happen for themselves. The funds raised will support unit social activities and sports days. “It’s all for the morale of the squadron,” Sgt Palazzo said. And in the meantime, they had a lot of fun. On Friday LCol Mullins announced the fitness and nutrition components of this year’s Wing Commander’s Summer Lifestyle Challenge. To complete the fitness component, participants must exercise for 21 straight days, performing at least 21 minutes of physical activity each day. If you miss a day, you must start from the beginning and try again. Regular exercise not only improves overall fitness, it helps to prevent certain diseases. Heart disease, osteoporosis, diabetes and some types of cancer are among the ailments that can be prevented with a healthy lifestyle, and that includes regular exercise. Healthy eating is also important. The nutrition element in this year’s Wellness Challenge is to eat one green and one orange fruit or vegetable every day for 21 consecutive days. As with the fitness element, if you miss a day, you must start again. Nutrients found in orange and green vegetables are beneficial for the eyes, bones and heart, and can help prevent some types of cancer. This Wing Commander’s Wellness Challenge is in effect from May 16 to August 28. Participants can pick up a log book at the Col JJ Parr Sports Centre, or you can find it online at cfcommunitygateway. ca. Completed forms will be entered into a draw for prizes, and units will earn Wing Commander’s Cup points based on participation and completion of the Challenge. Things May Not Be What They Seem Tammy Buchanan, Health Promotion Specialist In previous jobs, I had to review contracts for different entertainers. Some bands or speakers had unusual requests such as exotic snacks, a dozen black socks, dimmed lighting in their change room, or exactly three water bottles beside their microphone. In the 1980’s, the band Van Halen had a rider that was over 50 pages requesting all sorts of things. One strange request was a bowl of M&Ms in their room with no brown ones in the bowl! Venues knew celebrities could be extreme, but this was ridiculous. The real reason for that seemingly diva request was so the band could tell with certainty that the rider had been read and followed. If there were brown M&Ms in the bowl, they would know that the rider, with all their safety requests, had not been read in great detail. This was not a diva move but a risk management move. It was brilliant! In 2009, Amazon purchased an online shoe store called Zappos for more than a billion dollars. The store’s claim to fame was their customer service. Their employees were their greatest asset. Zappos did not pay them a lot, but they had a high employee retention rate. Once you were hired and your training had begun, the company offered you a resignation package of a few thousand dollars to quit and agree never to work for them again. What kind of company pays their new recruits to quit? Only a small percentage of employees chose the cash. Management considered it a small price to pay to preserve its culture of excellent customer service by getting rid of unsuitable employees. It was brilliant! Two guys went to an all-you-can-eat buffet. One sat with his back to the buffet spread, and the other sat facing the food. Both got up and made their way to the buffet line. The first patron went through the buffet and looked at the offerings in each section. He reviewed the salad bar, the entrees, specialty items, and took a quick look at the dessert bar. Then he returned to the front of the line, picked up a small dinner plate, took the items he had preselected the first time through, and returned to his seat. The second patron went to the buffet, grabbed the larger dinner plate and proceeded to scoop items onto it, realizing halfway through that his plate was getting too full. He sat down to eat the first plateful. While eating, he noticed people returning for seconds, so he quickly finished his first plate and returned for more. Who do you think would be the thinner patron? Sitting with your back to the food, taking a minute to preview the buffet and using a smaller dinner plate all add up to less calories consumed! Not much extra effort… and it is brilliant! Now is a good time for graduating students to think about applying. High academic standing is not a requirement, but a 500-word personal essay on either Leadership, Quality of Life or Community Spirit is an important part of the application. The scholarships were established by the Medley CFB Society to honour the memory of CWO Peter Stauffer, WCWO of 4 Wing from 2000 to 2004. To be eligible, students must be dependants of military personnel, or of DND or NPF employees; they must be planning to pursue full-time postsecondary studies at a recognized college or university; they must show consistent academic standing; and they must have demonstrable commitment to the community. “Consistent academic standing doesn’t mean that a student has to be on the honour roll,” said WCWO Bob Viel, ViceChair of the Medley CFB Society. “If you’ve maintained a consistent grade point average, at a C level or an A level, you meet that requirement.” The idea, he said, is not to show that you are outperforming others [Leadership, Quality of but that you are putting Life or Community Spirit] forth your best effort. means to them, and The essay is the most illustrate that quality’s important requirement, difference in their own CWO Viel said, and lives.” it doesn’t hurt to start If you have questions thinking about it now. about the scholarships or “It’s critical for the application process, students to provide a please contact CWO Viel clear and well thought at 780-840-8000 ext 8113 out presentation of what or by email at Robert. their selected quality [email protected]. Forgiveness Father Marian Korzeniowski A distinguishing mark of any person should be the presence of forgiveness and the willingness to seek reconciliation, not merely the absence of anger and conflict in their lives. The concept of willingness to seek reconciliation cannot be overlooked, for in some situations reconciliation will not be possible. Reconciliation is a twoway process into which I cannot force another person. I can forgive, but I cannot demand that the other forgive me in return. Forgiveness is often defined as a process of ceasing to feel resentment against someone, or of pardoning someone. To let go of resentment is to choose life. Holding on to resentment dulls the life within us.
