They learn to take care of priorities including administering first aid, starting a fire and building a shelter. In addition, they learn bushcraft skills like carving a spoon and building a deadfall trap for small game. Students also learn how to build a signal fire. This involves packing a tripod structure with firewood for heat, and covering it with green boughs to focus the heat and generate smoke. The idea is for intense heat to push the smoke through the thermal barrier at the top of the trees so it will be visible from a search aircraft. Avr Pomerleau enjoyed the challenge and felt some satisfaction on completing his 72-hour solo camp. “It’s a big accomplishment knowing that I can stay in the bush. Knowing I can build a camp, build a nice fire, even build a signal fire, is a big accomplishment,” he said. “I’m a hunter, so I know the basics of survival in the bush, but this experience has helped me gain confidence to be able to go out in the bush, get lost, and spend a few nights out there. It’s a big confidencebooster.” And that, MCpl McArthur says, is the point. “The crux of it is confidence,” he said. “This is a confidence-builder. We don’t bring them out here to break them down, we bring them out here to build them up and teach them all the things that they can do to make themselves get back. “ RE/MAX Real Estate E3435480 #15, 6506 - 47 Street OPEN HOUSE: Saturday, January 16 1-3 PM E3435420 6614 Tri City Way OPEN HOUSE: Sunday, January 17 1-3 PM Patti Ouellette 780-812-6655 Page 2 The Courier News & Publishing Tuesday, January 12, 2016 Wing Commander and Wing Chief Warrant Officer January Message On behalf of the synonymous with the Snowfest 2016. Jeff Gaye Confessions of a Coffee Curmudgeon (in which your world-weary reporter plays the rube while matching wits with a seventeen-year-old ubersophisticate). While in the big city, I stopped at a popular coffee shop chain and ordered a large black coffee. “Large – do you mean venti?” asked the lad behind the counter. “Is that the large one?” “Yes,” he said. I smiled patiently, waiting as he figured it out. Three… two… he got it. Then: “Americano?” “No, I’m Canadian but I’m from out of town.” “No, Caffe Americano – it’s coffee with a shot of espresso in it.” “Just a large black coffee, please,” I said pleasantly. But the questions kept coming. “Mild or bold?” “Surprise me.” “And what’s your name?” This time I hesitated, wondering if he was planning to report me or something. But he explained it’s so the barista can call me when she’s finished “creating” my cup of joe. “My name is Large Black Coffee,” I replied, still exuding patience Thank you for your continued support. Together, we make 4 Wing and our community stronger. and good humour. I paid for my coffee, then shuffled along and waited while the other customers received their orders in turn. I’m not defiant by nature, but I’m a bit resistant to corporate pretentiousness. The sizes on offer were venti, Italian for “twenty,” which somehow means “large”; grande, Italian for “large,” which means “medium”; and tall, English for “tall,” which naturally means “small.” And the guy wanted to make me say it. Fun game I guess, but I didn’t feel like playing. The barista announced each order as it was ready. “Ashley, Skinny Peppermint Mocha! Carl, Iced Caramel Macchiato! Rick, Cinnamon Dolce Frappuccino!” Then she got to mine. “Large black coffee!” I smiled smugly and thanked her as I picked it up. It was good coffee, too. While many members of the Wing were able to spend the holidays with families across the country, some stayed in the area. Christmas is the time of the year when we long to be together with our families, friends and those who are dear to us. However, for many military families, due to distance and the cost of travel, it is almost impossible to be with their parents and relatives who may live as far away as Nova Scotia or Newfoundland. Some of our military families are also away from their loved ones due to deployments. With many members on operations it is important to remember those who are left behind, and that is why the Wing padres once again organized their annual Christmas at the Wing Theatre with the showing of Arthur’s dinner. The idea of the Christmas, a movie about dinner was to get Santa’s son Arthur who together with those who through his love and “saved” stayed around during the determination holidays, bringing cheer Christmas for one child. to those who for some The movie seemed reason might feel lonely quite appropriate as or alone during this it is important to help celebrate the season special time. Unfortunately, many don’t stick with it. If you’re going from doing absolutely no exercise to exercising six days a week, or from eating virtually no fruits and vegetables to eating 10 servings a day, it’s a challenging and time consuming resolution. After all, those are big changes. But if you’re looking for 2016 to be the year where you finally stick to those changes, you can make the transition feel easy by taking baby steps. You can’t learn to run before you walk. Whenever we make a change, we need to start small and simple. But if you do it this way and accept that it will take time, you’ll be surprised how easy it can be to reach your goals. Here are a few quick tips on how to take “baby steps” to get where you want to be. Let’s start with nutrition. If you are not eating enough fruits or vegetables, don’t jump into the grocery store and fill your cart with them. Continue eating as you normally would, with one small change – for the first week, increase your vegetable and fruit intake by one serving every other day. The following week, add that extra fruit or vegetable every day. If you make small changes every week, it might take you 15 weeks to get all the fruits and vegetables that are recommended, but these small changes are a lot more manageable. After a while, you’ll find yourself eating better out of habit rather than forcing yourself. The same can be said for reducing the “unhealthy” food you eat. Don’t stop altogether, do so Health Promotion Derek Coe & Tammy Buchanan Health Can Be Catching gradually over a few weeks. You should take the same approach with physical fitness. If you are not exercising at all, start off one day a week with a session of 15 to 30 minutes of very light exercise. The next week add a little time to that session, or add a second day, but keep the intensity light. After you have taken a few weeks to reach three to five of days exercise, start adding time to your sessions. Keep the sessions to around 30 minutes until your body gets used to exercising. This may take eight weeks or longer. Once you have become accustomed to exercising, start increasing the intensity of some of your sessions. Continue slowly increasing frequency, duration and intensity and you’ll find that after a few months, exercising isn’t as bad or as painful as you once thought it was. It’s all about slow, small and simple changes every week. We might not like to take this time, but by doing so you’ll find the changes a lot easier and a lot more sustainable. After all, you have now made a lifestyle change as opposed to a quick fix. If you have questions, contact the Health Promotion or Fitness and Sports Office. AquaFit is for Everyone Charyty Chenier It’s that time of year again. Resolutions have been made. Let’s think about that big one – getting in shape and losing a few pounds. But everyone is doing it and the gyms are all full. Have you ever thought of trying aquafit? It’s for everyone, every age, every fitness level and any stage of swimmer. We offer workouts of all intensities. Low intensity focuses on range of motion, intermediate is for maintaining your fitness level, and high intensity is for those looking for a harder workout that burns calories and tones muscles. All include cardio training and all have a much lower gravitational impact on the body than land exercises. Because every class is different, you should try it at least twice. Even if you’re not a swimmer, you can work out in the shallow water. The deeper you work out, the more your balance, coordination and range of motion will improve. Whether your goal is to slim down, firm up or just be more active, you will get a full body and cardiovascular workout.
