Hooked rug exhibit for Spring 2006
Une grande exposition des œuvres produites par les Tapissiers de Saint-Henri aura
lieu du 13 au 20 mai 2006. Cette exposition se tiendra au Centre Récréatif et culturel Saint-Zotique. Le premier jour de cette
exposition coïncide avec notre dernière
rencontre mensuelle pour l’année 20052006.
Cette exposition a pour principaux objectifs de faire reconnaître l’immense talent
que recèle notre regroupement ainsi que de
faire connaître l’art traditionnel du tapis
« hooké » ou du tapis crocheté au plus
grand nombre de gens possible.
Nous aurons besoin de volontaires pour
monter l’exposition les 11 et 12 mai ainsi
que pour exercer un surveillance et faire
des démonstrations de tapis crochetés pendant la tenue de l’exposition.
La publicité pour l’exposition reposera essentiellement sur les efforts de chacun
pour faire connaître l’événement.

A large hooked rug exhibition will be organized by the Saint-Henri Rug Hookers in
the Spring of 2006. This exhibit will take
place May 13th to the 20th, 2006 at the
CRCS Saint-Zotique in Saint-Henri. The
first day of this exhibit coincides with our
last monthly hookin of 2005/2006.
The exhibit is intended to showcase the
considerable talents of our group, the SaintHenri Rug Hookers, to as much of the general population as possible, in order that we
might draw attention to this traditional art
of rug hooking.
We will need volunteers to help set up the
exhibit on May 11 and 12, 2006. We will
also need people to supervise the exhibit
and to demonstrate rug hooking to visitors.
The exhibit will be accessible to visitors
only when there will be a Tapissier present.
Publicity for the event will need the support of everyone to make sure that it is well
attended. Start thinking of when and where
you can advertise our first annual Rug
Show.

En rappel, l’exposition du GMRHG aura
lieu du 1er au 9 avril 2006. Le thème de
cette année est « Strong Women » et mettra
en vedette Michelle Micarelli, Pat Merikallio
et Emily Robertson.
Vos pièces doivent parvenir aux organisateurs au plus tard le 18 mars 2006.

Le Rug Story: 1394 Maple, Shawinigan

« Lorsqu’on s’aventure à faire du tapis crocheté, il ne
faut pas avoir peur de défaire et ce n’est qu’au troisième
essai que là, enfin, j’étais sur la bonne voie. »
Mon intérêt pour le tapis crocheté remonte à il
y a une trentaine d’années. Un jour, vers 1987, je reçois
l’annonce de la parution prochaine d’un nouveau magazine américain « Rug Hooking ». En voyant tous ces
merveilleux tapis, j’eus le coup de foudre. Il fallait que
j’apprenne à tout prix. L’été suivant , je me retrouvais à
Kennybunk Port au studio de Joan Moshimer ou j’ai
acheté un kit. Éventuellement, une rencontre avec Judith Dallegret me donna un second souffle. Tous les

de mon enfance

Cette maison à laquelle je n’avais que très rarement
pensé depuis le jour où je l’avais quittée envahissait
maintenant toutes mes pensées. Ce nouveau projet se
ferait sur toile de lin que j’expérimentais pour la première fois. Au niveau des couleurs et de l’exécution, le
grand défi pour moi à ce moment-là était de rendre les
arbres intéressants. Je voulais leur donner du volume et
essayer de recréer l’apparence qu’ils ont au début septembre lorsque le température et les couleurs de la nature changent. En consultant de vieux périodiques
(notamment Rug Hooking) j’essayais de voir comment
le feuillage était traité. Lorsqu’on s’aventure à faire du
tapis crocheté, il ne faut pas avoir peur de défaire et ce
n’est qu’au troisième essai que là, enfin, j’étais sur la
bonne voie.
La brique grise de la maison ne posait pas de problème.
Là ou j’ai mis beaucoup de temps, ce fut dans la réalisation des vitres à carreaux. Comment souligner le petit
format de ces carreaux ? J’ai eu recours à la laine filée à

broder. Ce fut une étape assez laborieuse pace qu’il fallait passer ces fils de laine entre les loupes déjà crocheté
des vitres. Ces défis me permirent de réaliser que nous
pouvions utiliser
pour crocheter une
variété de tissus et
de matériaux en autant qu’ils aient la
bonne couleur et la
souplesse requise.
J’ai donc décidé de
mettre de petites

Pour la bordure, je me suis vite rendu compte que je
devais teindre la même laine deux fois pour obtenir l’intensité de vert requis. Crocheter la bordure fut un réel
plaisir et soudainement ça allait vite!
La finition que je voulais pour ce tapis ovale consistait
d’une corde entre deux épaisseurs de lin et par la suite
recouverte de laine (whipping). A ma grande surprise,
encore une fois le tout se faisait rapidement. En peu de
temps après l’étiquetage et un bon pressage, « ma maison » était prête pour l’exposition de Shelburne. Mais
avant, je souhaitais la montrer aux propriétaires de la
maison depuis plus de trente ans.
J’ai donc organisé une visite en Mauricie en compagnie
de ma sœur et de mes frères. Comment vous décrire la
surprise de Mme Simard en voyant ce que j’avais fait.
Ce fut une occasion de joies partagées et de récits de
souvenirs en parcourant les différentes pièces de la maison. Pour moi, cette journée n’avait pas de prix. Mon
petit labeur avait provoqué cette rencontre si chaleureuse et c’était la plus belle des récompenses. C’est un
peu dans le même esprit que je continue à crocheter
des tapis parce que j’aime provoquer ces élans de tendresse que suscitent des images se rapportant à ma vie
et celle de ma famille.

Rug Hooking Courses at Dawson College
Traditional Rug Hooking
at Dawson College
This course provides students with a comprehensive
introduction to traditional hand-hooked rugs. The student will be introduced to the fiber art of traditional
rug hooking. Specific information regarding the techniques and materials used to make traditional handhooked rugs and the different styles of rugs and motifs
will be demonstrated and discussed. Students will learn
skills to develop a harmonious colour plan. Particular
attention will be given to finishing techniques. The
techniques learned will allow the student to start and
finish any hooked fiber art project. Students may select
from six possible patterns in kit form offered by the instructors to begin hand hooking a small rug during
class. In the second half of the course, students will design and hook their own rug.

Classes are from 6:30 to 9:30

Mug Rug Exchange
Tips from Judith
I would like to propose a mug rug exchange among those
interested within the Saint-Henri Rug Hookers group. I
will bring a few mug rugs to the next meeting (January
14th) and to subsequent meetings as well to see if anyone
would like to exchange with me. This idea is certainly
not new; quilters have exchanged blocks and even fabric
postcards for years to the great enjoyment of all involved.
The chief advantages of a mug rug exchange are that
time spent hooking is minimal but the returns are great
because you can play with colour and design; in short,
you can experiment without the concerns inherent with
the creation of a large rug (time, expense, critical review
by ones peers…). By exchanging these little experiments
we can share our explorations in design and just simply
have fun.
HINTS ABOUT Moths by Judith Dallegret.
The rugs should be approximately 5” square, hooked in
whatever cut you choose, and finished in whatever manner you choose. Themes, colors and design are all your
own choice. The general purpose of a mug rug would be
to protect a table from a hot mug or small pot but they
can also be hung on the wall and displayed singly or as
part of a group.

If buying RECYCLED clothing for use in our hooked
rugs it is REALLY important to treat them well to get
rid of any insects before and after hooking with this
wool!!
Usually I go straight to the laundromat and wash all
articles I have found in hot water with ordinary TIDE.
I have been told that Tide has an odour that moths
don’t like. Then hang to dry in the SUN, which also
kills those little critters! I also cut any moth holes in
the wool in a square so I know they are old holes!
Make your own Moth repelling sachets:
Use dried rosemary, lavender, tansy, mint. or whole
cloves, chopped and mixed. Use a mortar and pestle,
or hammer between waxed paper . . .to crush them a
little. Store in little cotton fabric bags and hang in
wool areas. Add 3 drops of Rose ,Lavender or Rosemary oil to bag every 4-6 months.
Or . . . . . a great tip from -KATHLEEN MENZIES !
Get some cedar chips from the Pet Store and fill
old Panty hose leg with these chips . Stuff them in your
stash here and there, an inexpensive way to keep the
moths away!
