Ce qui suit est un extrait du communiqué de presse de l’exposition : Rachelle’s hooked rugs animate with vibrant colour the exhibition space of the Musée de Kent in Bouctouche. Representing the artist's major series – family, and the world that surrounds me- the 21 works juxtapose imagery from Rachelle’s home town of Bouctouche in counterpoint with that of her adopted city, Montreal. The exhibition continues through September 03. 2006. Rachelle started making hooked rugs in 2003 after visiting the Shelburne Museum hooked rug gallery. “If all these women can make rugs using feed sacks and a bent nail, I should be able to figure it out”, was Rachelle view when starting. The artist explains that she uses a latch hook and hooks without a frame simply because that was the way she learned. “My art reflects my personality. I am self taught and I like thinking outside the box. My rugs are examples that we do not always need expensive equipment to make beautiful and lasting art”. Rachelle joined the rug hooking group “Les Tapissiers de Saint-Henri” in Fall of 2005 to meet people. Rachelle was immediately inspired and has worked tirelessly ever since, as well as to hone her skills as a hooked rug artist. Rug hooking, for her, has become a vehicle for meditation, inspiration, and whimsy. Annonces 4 Devenir mem4 bre / membership Calendrier Calendar 4 Exécutif des Tapissiers de Saint-Henri: • Lucie G. My daughter & her family had earlier in the year moved into a charming older home which they were busily re-decorating. My teenaged granddaughter Emma invited me to see what had been done in her room & up the stairs we went for the viewing. She was so excited & pleased with her new personal space, but what caught my eye was a burlap bag lying on a chair that she had scrounged from the kitchen & purloined for some future purpose. After the exclamations & compliments on her newly decorated bedroom, I asked her about the bag. She just thought it was too nice to throw away she said. It was a rice bag with all the printed advertising on both sides, in colour, with a logo that featured a butterfly. Of course what I saw was an opportunity! Emma's younger brother Timothy, had asked me to hook him a rug the year before which I was able to do, Hooked Rice Bag and I gave it to him for Christmas. Maybe Emma would like a hooked bag! So I asked her how she felt about me hooking the rice bag for her. Well, it was as though she'd been hoping I'd offer & she squealed that she'd love me to do just that & thanked me. So the bag came home with me and the project was underway. What I found daunting was the prospect of producing something that a 'cool' teenager would be comfortable using. I was given free rein to do as I pleased, but I decided to consult Emma a few times on my choices. I knew she liked a certain striped wool she had noticed me using on another piece & as I had enough left we agreed it was a good choice for the main body of the bag. I tend to prefer using recycled materials in my hooking Hooked Rice Bag Page 2 & this was no exception. In fact the entire project was accomplished using recycled wools, yarns, the lining of a coat I'd taken apart, and even the leather handles which I managed to yank off a discarded leather bag put out for garbage pickup by a local tack shop (sellerie). So for Emma's new bag, there would be no new material. It was all recycled, including of course, the original burlap bag for rice. I love recycling stuff; I find it more Hooked Rice Bag: The backinteresting & challenging & ground was hooked with the it exercises the imaginasame wool that was used to tion. I began by undoing the bag & sewing on the strips of material needed to enlarge the width for stretching over my hoop. The hooking proceeded well enough & I chose to use yarn to delineate the butterfly logo & printing. I decided to insert gussets on the sides of the « Emma carries her bag to school every day & tells me she's the envy of her friends.» bag to give it more capacity & I used the same striped material that I hooked for the main body, but I used it unhooked. A good hooking friend helped me prepare these parts as I'm not adept in the sewing department. She gave me a lesson in care and patience. To give myself credit though, I did sew them in myself, by hand, as well as the lining for the interior. I also had some expert advice from another knowledgeable hooker on the proper placement & attachment of the handles. There's more to constructing a bag than I'd imagined. The finishing whipping was done with a sturdy, colourful yarn that I'd picked up at a garage sale the year before. I felt quite proud that I'd been able to execute the finished product, but of course the ultimate approval was to come from Emma. She was thrilled with her October birthday present from me. She carries her bag to school every day & tells me she's the envy of her friends.
