E
st-il possible d'être frère et
de ne pas avoir de frères?
Evidemment non! Dans sa définition la plus courante, ce qui
constitue le lien commun entre
les membres d'une même famille, c'est le sang qui coule
dans les veines des uns et des
autres, c'est le fait de posséder
les mêmes ancêtres. L'arbre généalogique qui réside dans la
mémoire du groupe est en général suffisant pour être identifié
comme membre de la famille. Et
lorsque cela ne suffit pas, il y a
l'état civil et les tests ADN.
Notre lien à nous c'est l'Octalogue. Mais ce beau texte serait peu
de chose sans nos boucans qui
matérialisent la fratrie. Participer
à ces rencontres est un des
moyens les plus enrichissants de
pleinement realiser les valeurs
fondamentales de notre confrérie:
l'amitié et l'amour de la mer.
Mais les Frères de la Côte sont
aussi de grands voyageurs et les
voyages offrent de multiples possibilités de rencontres entre Frères. Et c'est là que les ressources
mises à disposition par notre
Secrétariat international sont irremplaçables pour préparer ces
contacts: il y a d'abord l'International Directory qui donne toutes
les informations nécessaires sur
les responsables de chaque
confrérie nationale. Il y a ensuite
la BOClist qui fournit les adresses internet de plus de 2000 Frères dans le monde. Et il y a enfin
la liste mondiale des Tables locales, que l'on pourrait améliorer,
certes, en indiquant un no de téléphone (nous y pensons!). Et tout
cela paraît régulièrement dans
notre Tortuga Post et peut être
téléchargé à partir de secoin.org
que de yahoo.com.
Pas de doute, donc: ce que l'ADN
nous refuse, c'est la communication qui nous le donne!
C
ould you call yourself a
brother if you did not have
any brothers ? Obviously not ! In
its most commonly used definition, the common bind of the
members of a family is their
blood and the fact that they all
have common ancestors. The
family tree that we all keep in our
memory is usally good enough to
be identified as a member of the
family. And if that is not enough,
there is the birth certificate and
the DNA tests.
Our very own bond is the Octalog. However, these beautiful
words would not mean much
were it not for our boucans, tip a
few gatherings and zafs which
are the practical way to express
our brotherhood. To participate
in those meetings is one of the
most rewarding way to fully ascertain the fundamental values of
our brotherhood, friendship and
love of the sea.
But the Brothers of the Coast are
obviously also much involved in
travelling and those trips present
multiple possibilities for brothers
to meet each other. This is where
the resources made available by
SECOIN (International Secretariat) are essential to help set up
those meetings: First of all, there
is the International Directory,
which provides all necessary
contact informations on the leadership of each national brotherhood. Then there is the BOC list
which provides the email addresses of more than 2000 brothers worldwide. And lastly, there
is a worldwide list of existing
local tables, which could eventually be improved by incorporating a contact telephone number
(we are hoping to work on that !).
All these informations are regularly published in the Tortuga
Post and can be downloaded
from either the YahooGroups
sites or the secoin.org site.
No doubt then: what we can't get
through a DNA test, we can get it
through communications !

Podría usted llamarse hermano si
no tiene hermanos?
Obviamente que no! En su más
corriente definición, se utiliza para
indicar los miembros de una familia
consanguínea y de antepasados
comunes. El árbol genealógico que
se guarda en nuestra memoria suele
ser bastante bueno para identificarlo
como miembro de la familia. Y si
ello no fuera suficiente, está el certificado de nacimiento y la prueba de
ADN.
Nuestro propio vínculo es el Octálogo. Sin embargo, estas bellas palabras no significan mucho si no fuera
por nuestros bucanes, puntos de encuentros y zafs que son la forma
práctica de expresar nuestras condición de hermanos. Participar en esas
reuniones es una de los más gratificantes formas de conocer plenamente
los valores fundamentales de nuestra
hermandad, la amistad y el amor al
mar.
Pero los Hermanos de la Costa son,
evidentemente, grandes viajeros y
ello ofrece múltiples posibilidades de
encuentro entre los hermanos. Aquí
es donde los recursos puestos a disposición por Secoin (Secretario
Coordinador Internacional) son esenciales para ayudar a establecer esas
reuniones: En primer lugar, está el
Directorio Internacional, que proporciona toda la información necesaria
para contactar a los dirigentes nacionales de cada hermandad.
Luego está el BOC que establece una
lista de direcciones de correo electrónico para más de 2000 hermanos de
todo el mundo.
Y por último, existe el listado mundial de las actuales mesas locales, lo
que podría eventualmente ser mejorado mediante la incorporación de un
número de teléfono de contacto
(estamos en trabajo de ello). Todos
estos datos se publican periódicamente en The Tortuga Post y se
puede descargar desde cualquiera de
los sitios Yahoogroups o Secoin.org.
No cabe duda entonces:!Qué lo que
no puede obtener a través del ADN,
lo lograremos a través de las comunicaciones.

envió siguiente mensaje a la
Asamblea de los Capitanes nacionales:
"Mi Querido Capitán Nacional
Le 11 juin 2008, SECOIN a
adressé le message suivant à
l’Assemblée des Capitaines
nationaux:
" Mon cher Capitaine national,
Plusieurs confréries nationales nous
donnent actuellement des soucis.
Mais parmi elles, l'une semble particulièrement menacée dans son existence. Il s'agit du Sénégal:
Cette confrérie est l'œuvre en 1973
d'un Frère belge installé au Sénégal,
David Huysmans. Elle a toujours été
atypique parce que ses Frères étaient
généralement des navigateurs de
passage qui étaient engagés alors
qu'ils hivernaient dans les eaux sénégalaises et qui, par la suite, partaient
vers des mers lointaines. Son Capitaine a cependant vaillamment représenté sa confrérie dans plusieurs Zaf
mondiaux. A son départ du Sénégal,
David Huysmans a passé la barre à
Jean Rey. Or celui-ci, atteint dans sa
santé, ne semble pas avoir été en
mesure d'assurer la survie de la
confrérie sénégalaise. Celle-ci est
demeurée silencieuse depuis plus de
4 années. Et je constate maintenant
que même l'adresse e-mail du Capitaine national ne répond plus.
Dans ces conditions, et avec l'accor d d e Davi d Huysmans
(Consol'Dave), j'aimerais suggérer
à l'Assemblée des Capitaines nationaux d'inscrire dorénavant cette
Confrérie en catégorie B du Directory. Cette mesure donnera l'occa-

On June 11th, 2004, SECOIN
sent the following note to the Assembly of National Captains:
A new national
Brotherhood is
born!
My dear National Captain,
Several National Brotherhoods are
presently giving us concern. Amongst
them Senegal appears particularly
threatened in its existence.
This brotherhood is the brainchild in
1973 of a Belgium Brother residing in
Senegal David Huysmans. This brotherhood has always been atypical because
its Brothers were generally passing
navigators who were inducted while
wintering in Senegalese waters and who
later departed for distant oceans. Its
Captain however valiantly represented
his brotherhood in several world Zafs.
Before his departure from Senegal,
David Huysmans passed the helm to
Jean Rey. However he was not up to
maintaining the health of the Senegalese brotherhood which has remained
silent for more than 4 years. I now notice that even the email address of the
National Captain remains silent.
Under these conditions, and with the
agreement of David Huysmans
(Consol' Dave), I would like to suggest to the Assembly of National Captains to register this Brotherhood
henceforth in category B of the Directory. This action will allow the
Assembly of National Captains to reexamine the case of Senegal at the
time of the World Zafarrancho in
Australia (2010).
Without news from you before July
15th, 2008, I will accept that you approve of this measure. To the contrary,
however, please foreword your comments in due time.

La triste nouvelle que nous
craignions est tombée: notre Frère
BILITS, le Grand WILLY de
ROOS, a appareillé pour sa
dernière croisière ce 4 août, après
une longue maladie. Son ami,
notre Frère WINDVANE, le
docteur Guy Cappeliez, l'a assisté
dans ses derniers jours et ses
derniers moments, accompagné
d'un de ses confrères.
Ils ont parlé de ce qu'il aimait, de
bateaux, de navigations et de
Frères de la Côte jusqu'à son
départ. Willy a souhaité être
incinéré entouré uniquement de sa
famille et de ses amis très
proches.
Pour rappel, Willy est un de nos
Grands Exporateurs et
Navigateurs :
Entre 1972 et 1975, à bord de son
fidèle compagnon, le ketch
"WILLIWAW" il a effectué un
tour du monde à la voile d'Est en
Ouest par le cap Horn et Bonne
Espérance. Navigation pour la
plus large part en solitaire.
En 1977 il a réussi le passage du
Nord-Ouest, du Groenland au
détroit de Behring, avec arrivée à
Vancouver au Canada. Navigation
dans l'Océan polaire décrite dans
son livre "Le Passage du NordOuest".
En 1978 il a poursuivi le périple
en direction de l'Antarctique, puis
revenant à Nieuport d'où il était
parti il réalisait la première
circumnavigation du continent
américain de l'Histoire. En 1982,
il est retourné en Antarctique

accompagné de notre frère Le
Chef, Alfi Van Brande afin de
tourner un film sur l'état du
continent tout en suivant le sillage
de l'explorateur français JeanBaptiste Charcot. Voyage relaté
dans son livre "Inaccessible
Horizon".
Les Frères belges ont reçus
d'innombrables messages de
sympathie: Rarement le départ
d'un Frère a suscité une telle
émotion.
En 1986, il a tourné un
documentaire sur la découverte
maritime de l'Argentine et du
Chili. Cette navigation toute
particulière fut réalisée en
solitaire et est décrite dans son
livre "Seul, dans le sillage des
caravelles".
Ce jeudi 4 septembre 08 le Grand
Frère National "Tooth" a organisé
une réunion avec les GF &
Scribes des tables de Belgique,
actuels et à venir, le Grand Frère
National des Pays-Bas, la table de
Breskens, la boutique, notre Frère
De Pomper, le scribe national et
moi-même au club du RBSC à
Langerbrugge.
Ces différentes navigations,
réalisées avant le réchauffement
climatique, lui ont permis
d'acquérir une grande expérience
dans la navigation et
p a rt i cu l iè re me n t d a ns l e s
conditions polaires. Il a effectué
plusieurs de ses navigations avec
son fidèle équipier, notre Frère Le
Chef, ainsi qu'avec Le Grand
Viking, Michel Geerts, qui
figurent parmi ses grands amis.
J'invite ceux qui n'ont pas encore
eu l'occasion de la faire, à lire les
ouvrages susdits afin de connaître
mieux un homme passionné et
passionnant.
En Willy nous perdons un grand
homme, un grand spécialiste des
régions polaires, mais aussi et
surtout un Frère et un homme
formidable: bon, généreux,
chaleureux et toujours prêt à faire
partager aux autres ses expérience

partageons la douleur de sa
famille et de ses proches et lui
souhaitons une paisible
navigation sur des mers toujours
sereines.

La navegación entre hielos
demoró 4 meses y ahora (1979) se
apresta a rebasar el Círculo Polar
Ártico, donde pasará todo el
Invierno. La capitanía Nacional
de Chile hizo entrega al hermano
Roos cuando recaló en la ciudad
de Valdivia, la Estrella de Oro y la
Patente de Corso en un
zafarrancho que se efectuó en su
honor.”

Willy De Roos: recuerdos
chilenos:
Me he enterado por la revista
"Desde la Cofa del Trinquete" de
la Capitanía Nacional de Chile,
que el hermano Willy de Roos
tiene rol chileno Nº 1239 del año
1974 y premiado con la medalla
GHM además de la Estrella de
Oro y la Patente de Corso y que
hay un artículo en la revista
Abordajes del año 1979 que
señala:
“El hermano Willy de Roos, gran
navegante belga y gran admirador
de Chile, que fuera enganchado en
la mesa de Arica con el rol Nº
1239 en 1975, realizó la hazaña de
ser el navegante Nº 12 que cruzó
desde el Atlántico al Pacífico,
rebasando el Círculo Ártico. Su
ruta se inició a través de los hielos
con su yate Williwav por el
estrecho de Baffin bajando al Sur
por el estrecho de Bering.

I just learned that our Brother
Christian Goguet, a.k.a.
Taillevent has passed away on
August 16 in a hospital in
Haiti after being admitted the day
before for cardiac failure. I do not
have any other details. Brother
Taillevent was a leading expert on
the history of the "Freres de la
Cote", the privateers who
gathered on the Isle de la Tortue
in the 17th Century.

Je viens d'apprendre la disparition
de notre Frère Christian Goguet,
dit Taillevent, le 16 août a l'hôpital
de Port-au-Prince, Haiti, après
avoir été admis la veille dans un
état comateux suite à un malaise
cardiaque. Je n'ai pas d'autres
détails. Notre Frère Taillevent
était un des meilleurs experts de
l'histoire des flibustiers de l'île de
la Tortue.
Hommage
J'ai rencontré Christian pour la
première fois quelques semaines
apres mon arrivée en Haiti en Mai
1985. Nous n'étions pas encore
Frères, ni l'un ni l'autre, mais nous
avions déjà tous les deux le même
intérêt proche de la passion pour
l'histoire de la flibuste, des Frères
de la Côte et celle de l'Ile de la
Tortue. La différence est que dans
son cas, son intérêt était
accompagné d'une expertise et
d'une connaissance livresque
approfondie du sujet. Gentiment, il
m'avait donné la bibliographie
qu'il tenait a
jour sur son
ordinateur Macintosh, à l'époque
un de ces premiers modèles ou

ne soit pas un Mac.
L'amitié qui est née de cette
première rencontre ne s'est
ensuite
jamais démentie et,
pendant les 23 ans qui ont suivi,
nous avons
regulièrement
maintenu le contact.
Christian fut intronisé dans la
table d'Haiti après mon depart
pour d'autres rivages en 1990.
La table d'Haiti fondée en 1987 n'a
pas résisté à l'embargo imposé
après un des nombreux coups
d'Etat et a pris l'eau dans le début
des années 90.
En 1996, lorsque les Frères
participant au Zaf hémisphérique
organisé par René Fiechter firent
escale à l'Ile de la Tortue en Haiti,
Christian vint à bord du bateau
pour partager ses connaissances et
sa passion avec la Confrérie.
Christian, qui est toujours resté
dans le pays, fut un des piliers qui
permit de remettre la table a flot
en 1999, dans des conditions de
plus en plus difficiles, qui n'ont
pas permis à cette nouvelle table
de s'épanouir normalement.
Malgré tout, lorsque Son
Excellence (Jacques RIAL,
SECOIN de 1994 à 2002,
rédacteur en chef de The Tortuga
Post) ou moi-même avions besoin
de prendre des nouvelles de la
table, Christian était la source
fiable et disponible a consulter. Et
Christian était toujours disponible
pour les Freres éventuels en visite
en Haiti. Ce qui m'a toujours
frappé chez Christian, outre son
amitié
chaleureuse, était sa
décontraction extrême et son
affabilite debonnaire. Toujours
optimiste, toujours positif, jamais
en colère, dans un pays déchiré
par les coups d'Etat, la violence et
l'anarchie, il faisait bon partager
quelques moments avec lui.
Et il était toujours en train de
travailler sur un projet ou un autre

qui pourrait mettre en valeur le
riche passé historique d'Haiti et de
l'Ile de la Tortue. J'ai vecu avec lui
le feu d'artifice du millénaire à
Labadie, dans le nord, j'ai
bénéficié de son appui pour la
mise en place de la marina de
Libertalia à Pestel, j'ai partagé
avec lui son projet de musée de la
Flibuste qui devait être financé par
le PNUD, j'ai été un des tous
premiers lecteurs de son manuscrit
pour le petit ouvrage qu'il a écrit
sur les boissons de la flibuste,
entre autres, car la liste réelle est
beaucoup plus longue.
Merci Christian de toute cette
énergie que tu as consacrée à la
Confrérie, merci d'avoir partagé
avec nous toutes tes
connaissances sur les Frères de la
Côte.
Mais l'ouvrage n'est pas terminé et
il nous appartient de continuer

not only very knowledgeable - he
was truly a gentlemen-brother.

IRELAND
The three Tables of Ireland have
had an active Summer as the
Frères de la Côte organisation here
goes from strength to strength and
is increasingly active.
First off was the new Northern
Table with it’s Boucan on Rathlin
Island off the Coast of Antrim on
June 14th. This island is famous in
Irish and Scottish history, the
scene of many raids by Irish,
Scots, Norse and English pirates.
The Table’s emblem is a galley of
the type used by the Lords of the
Isles to control the seas. Our Frère
W a l l a c e C l a r k , wh o h a s
transferred from the Western to
the Northern Table, had a replica
galley built and sailed it from the
West of Ireland to the Shetland
and the Faroe Islands.
The
Boucan was attended by some
twenty four Brothers, and friends,
headed by Ricky Butler, the
Northern Grand Frère, and joined
by John Coyle G.F. Ireland and
Frère John O’Donnell on the
“Arctic Fern” on it’s return
passage from the Faroes. It was a
great gathering with many toasts,
speeches and songs.
Next came the turn of the new
Southern Table, based in the
ancient Viking Harbour of
Waterford and led by G.F. Nicky
F e we r a n d S c r i b e P e t e r
Cunningham. The Boucan was
held on July 19th in Baltimore on
the South Coast where the Irish
Boucan was held in 2007.
Baltimore is a fine and beautiful
harbour with a delightful little
town overlooked by the O’Driscoll
Castle and renowned for it’s sack
by Algerine pirates. There were
sixteen there at the dinner but one
would have thought it was twice
that many from the sound. The
new Southern Flag was flown with

it’s emblem of three sailing
ships.
Then the National Zaffarancho
came to pass on the island of Inis
Bofin on the weekend of August
1st. The Frères began to assemble
on Friday in the well-protected
harbour secured by its old fort.
Bofin too is redolent with history
from the early Celtic monastery,
Viking visits, various Irish wars
and piracies, and is now a happy
place to visit and explore, with
beautiful beaches and
magnificent views of
Connemara. The Irish Brethern
were delighted to welcome
Jacques and Christine Rial who
made the pèlerinage from
Switzerland. Jacques first came
to Ireland in 1960 taking film
footage for Swiss TV including
the pilgrimage to Croagh Patrick
on the Festival of Lunasa, and of
the Aran Islands.
He was
interviewed by Irish Television at
Renvyle House on his life and
times - he is a man of many parts.
On Saturday, three of the ten
boats assembled, including
Sauvage IV with Jean Claude
Goiot and le Goëlo, sailed to
nearby Inis Turk (population 78)
for a seafood lunch in Delia
Concannon’s house by the pier.
The day was fine, the food
delicious, the wine flowing and
the company the best. All told,
twenty four went to Turk.
Sunday tended to be damp - a
“soft day” as we would say. The
gathering was held in Murray’s
Doon More Hotel. There were
thirty eight in attendance.
Besides the Irish, including the
indomitable sailors Wallace
Clark, and Des Moran of the
Northern Table, were the Rials
from Switzerland, Queue de
Malet from Brittany but of the
Irish-Western Table, and his
company, Patrick Goarin, Scribe
of France, Peter and Kathy
Youngman from East Anglia,
Thierry Orbach of Brittany, and
Christine Currlin and Michael
Timié from the United States of
America - what a party. Our host
Andrew sang a beautiful
rendition of “Franklin’s Lament”
accompanied on fiddle and
mandolin by Michael Brogan and
Tom Moran. It was a late night!
Now, we are in the recovery
ward, the boats and crews are
heading to their home ports
preparing for the end of the
season and voyages planned for
2009. The Irish Tables have their
focus on the Volvo Ocean Race
which starts from Alicante on
October 11th and stops in Galway
from May 23rd to June 6th 2009.
The Frères de la Côte of Ireland
will be there in strength to assist
in every way and will have a base
on the Long Walk for the event spread the word and support the
Irish entry the “Green Dragon”.

Hermandad for the year 2008
was awarded and delivered to the
very deserving Brother. The
National Captain of “Bractwo
Wybrzeża” Jerzy DEMETRAKIPALEOLOG handed over to
Captain Jerzy RAKOWICZ a
real pirate battle axe on a special
ceremony in Kołobrzeg Yacht
Harbour held on May 31, 2008.
Brother Rakowicz (rol no. 57) is
a yachtsman and a businessman,
who miraculously manages to
successfully run for many years
those two sides of his life without
any major conflict. For the
seagoing fraternity he is the
memorable Polish single handed
competitor in two TRANSATs
(1976 and 1980) and three
AZABs
(1975 on 21”LOA
“Barnim”; 1979 on “Spaniel”The Winner ; 1983 on “Alice’s
Mirror”- The Winner ). Those
were the years when entry and
winning did not yet depend
almost entirely on amount of
money thrown in by commercial
sponsors… Nowadays Captain
Rakowicz is also renowned
skipper of Polish Tall Ships
“Pogoria” and “Fryderyk
Chopin” in some of their
worldwide trips.

Two Polish Brothers (Knabe and
Kacala) took part in 51st Italian
Z a fa r r a n c h o h e l d a l mo s t
simultaneously in very close
quarters - on MS “Lirica” cruising
along Polish shore of Baltic Sea.
She did not call into any Polish
harbour but we do expect another
important visitor soon. In between
21st and 24th August Gdynia
harbour shall be hosting STS
“Capitan Miranda” of Uruguayan
Armada. She pays a visit on the
occasion of 90th Anniversary of
Polish Navy but her crew consists
of quite a few Hermanos from
Uruguay and we are looking
forward to meet them.

PORTUGAL
During the year 2007 and
beginning of 2008, the activities
of the Portuguese “Brotherhood
of the Coast” were mainly
devoted to the international
relationship apart of several
internal events.
Internally, there was a strong
commitment of all Brothers on
several “Zafarranchos” and
nautical and cultural events also
took place. On those meetings,
the relation of all brothers
becomes stronger.
On April 4, the anniversary of our
Brotherhood, the Portuguese
Brothers joined all Brothers of the
World with a strong Ooorrrzzzaaa
on one more Anniversary.
Several Brothers of other Coasts
visited us and on several
zafarranchos, we had the
possibility to share experiences,
friendship, and straight
the
Brotherhood.
In August 2007, we had our
Brother Paul Medard aka "Vent
Debout" (Table de Bretagne France), with his famous IROISE
II. On his crew Brother Jacques
Lebranchu aka "Toison d’Or"
(Table de Bretagne - France) and
Robert Montagnese aka "Retard à
Terre" still an "engage" at that
time (Table de Normandie –
France). Great times were spent
together. Then time to
sail…Madeira and Açores
More or less at the same time,
Brother Bernard Couvercelle aka
“Ajut” (Table de Normandie –
France) on his “CHRISRIC”
stayed also for of couple of days.

The appearance of an original
document from the “Premier
Colloque International des
Freres de la Cote” issued from
Saint-Cloud (France), 15 January
1966 with the signatures of all
Brothers that assist this important
event for the French Brotherhood.
This document were offered to
our brother José Inácio da Costa
Lopes aka "Com Dor" by a friend
of him who knowing his interest
by everything related to the Sea
and Navigation, thought he could
have interested on that. This
document was found mixed with
old books and the astonishing of
the situation is the return of this
document to the hands of a
Brother of the Coast.
Copy if this document was
offered to our French Brothers
during their National Boucan in
Paris in April 2008. Several of the
original members still remember
it.
In July 2008 several Brothers
will returned once again to the
Portuguese Caravela "Vera Cruz"
(replica of a Portuguese caravel
from the XV Century, sister ship
of "Boa Esperança"), She was
commissioned and under the
commandment of José Inácio
Costa Lopes Junior aka "Com
Dor", former National Captain
and Grand Frère of the
Portuguese Brotherhood (1999 –
2001), she sailed to Azores
Islands, joining the Nao Vitoria
(Replica of the Nao Vitoria the
only one returning to Spain after
the Fernao de Magalhaes
circumnavigation). Those two
replica participated on the
celebration of the 500 years of the
Azores colonisation.
At Horta we had the possibility
to establish contacts nominating a
new local emissary with the
responsibility to found a new
Local Table.
July and August 2008 brought
again international relations, as
we were visited by Paul Medard
"Vent Debout" with his Captive
and crew on his IROISE II, and
Michel Malinovsky (Table de
Gascogne), also with his Captive
Maité and crew on his PACHA
VI. We had the particular pleasure
to spend some days together with

also sailing together we had

50th Anniversary !
National Captain Tom Collier
aka Ursa Major announces that
the 50th Anniversary of the US
chapter of the Brotherhood of
the Coast will take place where
it all started in the US -- in
New York City. It will be
hosted by the Table of New
York and will take place
November 13 – 15, 2009. The
New York Table has been
working on the event and is
promising an exiting venue at
the lowest possible cost. We
hope that many of our foreign
Brothers will join the US in
celebrating this important
milestone.

SYDNEY 2010:
7th WORLD ZAFF
The World Zaf. 2010 is planned from
Monday March 8 to Friday March 12, 2010!
Based around the Darling Harbour precinct we are striving for a
relaxing, inclusive event where all can attend the activities at the
same time. The hotels are in close proximity to the main venues
and will suit all budgets.
There will be pre and post Zaf. options for those planning a
longer stay and wishing to visit Surfers Paradise and the Great
Barrier Reef. We will also be liaising with our Brothers in New
Zealand to provide a linkage of events.
The Sydney World Zaf. will have the National Captains meeting
on Monday March 8 at a harbourside Naval base prior to the
Welcome Dinner. Tours for all attendees will include visits to
the Blue Mountains and a wildlife park to meet the aussie native
animals. A Bush and Beach day and also City Sights and a
Harbour Lunch cruise leaving time for optional Sydney Harbour
Bridge Climb and or an evening of opera at the Sydney Opera
House on on of our warm autumn evenings.
Hotels will range from luxury to budget and we are working on
providing some home stay and boat stay alternatives.
There will be free time for Brothers to catch up with friends.
Alternatively there is some time for shopping or visiting family
and friends in Sydney.
During the Zaf. you will have the chance to enjoy the highlights
of Sydney,with the Brotherhood, and also some of the hidden
treasures often missed by visitors.

BRITS IN THE BALTIC

it was time to dispense another drink!
Gerd explained that he would not be joining us
on board the “Norden” and so it was the Brits
responsibility to look after the bar. They were to
open it every day at 1100 hours, set up all the
gadgets, and make sure that everybody on board
had a drink.
The “Norden “ was a fine old wooden gaff cutter
of 28.5 metres and 90 tonnes, built in 1870. Her
owner, Pieter Fleck, an irascible broody looking
character with a red face which was only partly
visible through his long wild grey hair and
beard, scowled as we stepped aboard, his thumbs
ensconced behind his tatty bracers. His lady
friend, Heike, complete with a diamond through
her nose and torn jeans was the cook. Martin, the
bo’sun completed the permanent crew list. It was
difficult to determine Martin’s age because his
eyes were hidden behind the extra large peak of
a baseball cap, and the rest of his face was
hiding behind a mass of black facial hair.
In July 2008 three Frères de la Côte (GB) set off
from Stansted Airport heading for Lübeck, to
join our German Brothers for a few days sailing
the good ship “Norden” out of Travemünde.
They were the former National Captain, Fred
Bentley from the Table of East Anglia, Mike
Brothers, the Scribe of Solent Table and Bryan
Osborn, the National Scribe, also from Solent
Table.
At Lübeck Airport, they were greeted by Heinz
Scheel and Gerd Müller of the Brüder der Küste.
In the car park, Gerd opened the rear door of his
Landrover to reveal a suspended mobile of a
pirate ship, and a large leather treasure chest
adorned with a brass bell on its side. Gerd has
the reputation of setting up bars in unusual
locations, for example, on the pillion seat of a
motorbike, so it was no surprise when he rang
the bell and opened up the chest to reveal a bar
with an intriguing array of gadgetry including a
flag of the Brotherhood, a kitchen timer, a
thermometer, a clock, a radio and a light.
Whisky was dispensed from plastic medical
syringes, followed by champagne. The timer was
set at ten minute intervals, and when it went off,
There were twelve German Brüder, three British
Frères, and a Bavarian, who was jokingly
regarded as much more of a “Johnie Foreigner”
(- their words, not mine!) than the Brits. A
professional accordionist had been hired to
accompany the crew.
A cheer went up as Burghard Kuehnlein was
spotted off the starboard side heading towards us
in the “African Queen”, his little open motor
boat with its distinctive black and white funnel.
He had come four hundred kilometres,
singlehanded, through the inland waterways
from Berlin, just to be with us at the start of our
cruise.

At the earliest opportunity Captain Pieter
growled his orders to make sail. It took seven of
us to hoist the huge mainsail. Three foresails
were deployed and it was not long before
“Norden” was creaming along at nine knots in a
fresh wind.
Out of the blue, Captain Pieter declared suddenly
that it was eleven o’clock, and, as the captain’s
word was law, it was imperative to ring the bell
and open Gerd’s bar with all the ritual that that
entailed. It was amazing how often, in one day, it
was eleven o’clock!
THE TORTUGA POST
Wismar had been completely rebuilt following
the reunification of Germany. The facades of the
buildings had been faithfully reproduced in the
old styles of the Hanseatic ports.
Sailing back to Travemünde we were very aware
of the privilege it had been to spend quality time
with friends old and new. The Brits more than

weather was wet and blustery, it was an
invigorating sail. We all took turns on the helm
and experienced the power of the huge sails.
Even those more used to power boating found it
exhilarating, - once they had learned to steer a

ship’s company and were able to return the good
natured racial banter with interest. To their
enormous credit, the Germans spoke fluent
English almost exclusively, which we took, and
appreciated, as a great courtesy towards us.
Travemünde, the busiest ferry port in Europe,
was alive with bright coloured bunting at the
start of its Race Week. A distinguished Brother
from Brazil, Henri Rossollin, was there as an
International Judge and Jury Member. He chose
to dine with us rather than attend a high level
civic reception.

Supper was served from one huge pot as we all
sat around the bare wooden table. The fare was
more ‘agricultural’ rather than ‘cordon bleu’, but
nevertheless very tasty and very welcome.
I think we may have had a song or two, or even a
drink or two that evening before finally
clambering into our bunks!
The next day we set sail for the former East
German port of Wismar. Once again we had a
brisk and exhilarating sail in the best of
company.
Burghard gave us a circumnavigation of the city
of Lübeck in the “African Queen”, and Heinz
and Florian Hofacker gave us a comprehensive
tour of the city, to complete a wonderful few
days.
Throughout the week we were privileged to
experience the very best of courteous and
generous hospitality, both afloat and ashore,
from out German Brothers. It was Frères de la
Côte at its very best, and an example to us all.

n octubre de 1994, la
Asamblea
de
los
Capitanes nacionales, reunidos
en Chile en el 3er Zafarrancho
Mundial, aceptó la idea de
crear un boletín informativo
internacional con noticias de
Cofradías nacionales, simple
de hacer y sin costo. Desde su
primera edición en mayo de
1995, su Tortuga Post ha
cumplido en general con esta
regla.
Pero algunas veces se ha
requerido que sea un poco
menos austero: quisieran fotos,
artículos, incluso el color, en
definitiva un estilo diferente.
Esto es, por supuesto, fácil de
lograr. Pero debemos entender
que esto tiene un precio: el
boletín sería necesariamente
mucho más pesado, y tedioso
para descargar para todos
aquellos que no tienen
conexión rápida. Y entonces
puede ser que tendríamos que
prescindir de la mensagería
gratuita.(yahoo)

n October 1994, the
Assembly of National
Captains, meeting in Chile
d u r i n g t h e 3 r d Wo rl d
Zafarrancho, approved the idea
of creating an international
newsletter. This publication
would only contain news
generated by national
Brotherhoods. It should be
simple to assemble and cost
nothing. Ever since it was first
published in May 1995,
Tortuga Post, in general, has
respected this rule.
However, voices can be heard
here and there demanding less
austerity. They would like
photographs, articles with
color, in short, a different style.
This, of course, is easy to
realize. But it should be
understood that it has a price;
the bulletin would inevitably
be much larger, therefore
tiresome to download for all
those who do not have a fast
internet connection. In
addition, we would may be
have to leave our free e-mail
provider (Yahoo).
In three months we will
publish the 50th edition of
Tortuga Post. Do we want to
take advantage of this
anniversary to change its style?

This can only happen, of course, in that bizarre space which is inhabited by cartoonists!
BOZ's cartoons will infuriate feminists, irritate the politically correct and annoy the purists in many walks of life. It will also amuse
hundreds of married men and women who might just identify with
some of the situations depicted.
The 'Battle of the Sexes' is alive and well, and since there can be no
decisive victory for either side in this battle, BOZ thinks we might
as well all have a good laugh about it!

recent tradition permits the addition of

seals and marks which are proper to
them.

Voici donc, spécialement à l'intention des Vigies internationales, les délais rédactionnels des
prochains numéros de TTP:

un evento. He aquí por consiguiente, especialmente para las

El Tortuga Post es el boletín informativo oficial de los
Hermanos de la Costa. Es enviado libremente por Email a todos los Hermanos que se están inscritos en
BOC-Lista. Las Hermandades nacionales están autorizadas para utilizarlo de acuerdo a sus necesidades:
copias, traducciones parciales, etc, con la condición sin
embargo que siempre se indique la fuente. Por su parte,
los Vigías internacionales comunicarán con uno u otro
de los redactores o a SECOIN las noticias de su fraternidad. Estos comunicados serán escritos en una de los
cuatro idiomas oficiales de la fraternidad, y no traducidos normalmente.
The Tortuga Post is the official news bulletin of the
Brotherhood of the Coast. It is sent free by e-mail to all
the Brothers who are on the BOC-List. The national
Brotherhoods are authorized to use it to fit their needs:
copies, partial translations, etc., with the condition that
the source always be indicated. For their part, the
International Lookouts will communicate the news of
their Brotherhood to one of editors or to SECOIN.
These official news will be written in one of the four
official languages of the Brotherhood and will normally
not be translated.
The Tortuga Post est le bulletin d'information officiel
des Frères de la Côte. Il est adressé gratuitement par email à tous les Frères qui figurent sur la BOC-List. Les
confréries nationales sont autorisées à l'utiliser au
mieux de leurs besoins: copies, traductions partielles,
etc., à la condition toutefois que la source soit toujours
indiquées.
Pour leur part, les Vigies internationales
communiqueront à l'un ou l'autre des rédacteurs ou à
