Ottawa Art Gallery’s mandate is to be the
most vital visual arts institution in Ottawa.
As a leader in the community, it presents
new ideas and provides a cultural meeting
place that actively promotes relationships
and exchanges between artists and the
various, diverse facets of our community.
Ottawa Art Gallery explores and reflects
on diversity and social change through a
spectrum of visual arts practice, focused on
but not exclusive to the region in a national
and international context.
La Galerie d’art d’Ottawa s’est donné pour mandat
d’être l’institution la plus importante dans le secteur
des arts visuels à Ottawa. Occupant un rôle d’avantplan dans la communauté, l’organisme met de
l’avant des idées nouvelles et offre un lieu de
rencontre culturel qui favorise activement les relations
et les échanges entre les artistes et les divers secteurs
de la communauté. La Galerie d’art d’Ottawa
examine et reflète la diversité et le changement social
à travers un large éventail de pratiques en arts visuels,
de la région d’Ottawa et d’ailleurs, dans un contexte
national et international.

So it begins . . . destination 2017!
Nous voici donc… en route pour 2017 !
After years of lobbying, planning and
designing, in the fall of 2015, construction
commenced on the OAG Expansion. With
the superstructure of our new home rising
skyward, our growth has been made visible.
Après des années de consultations, de planification et
de réflexion, les travaux d’agrandissement de la GAO
ont commencé à l’automne 2015. Maintenant que
l’infrastructure de notre nouvelle demeure s’érige vers le
ciel, notre croissance devient visible.
Yet we are not just building a building;
we are exploring new ways to operate
and grow all aspects of our gallery: from
programming to human resources, to visitor
services and revenue generation. We are
simultaneously researching paradigm shifts
that are occurring in the museum sector
globally, and embracing the strengths and
particulars of our specific locale. We are
creating a collective space in which to ask
value-centric questions of ourselves such
as: What constitutes participation in the 21st
century gallery? How can we work laterally,
collaboratively and locally? How can a
municipal art gallery empower its citizenry
and influence social change?
Mais nous ne sommes pas simplement en train de
construire un bâtiment. Nous explorons de nouvelles
façons de faire fonctionner et développer tous les aspects
de notre galerie : de la programmation aux ressources
humaines, en passant par les services aux visiteurs et la
production de revenus. Nous cherchons simultanément
à refléter les changements de paradigme qui se
produisent dans le secteur muséal à travers le monde, et
à embrasser les forces et les particularités de notre propre
environnement. Nous créons un espace collectif où nous
pourrons nous poser des questions d’importance telles que
: que signifie la participation du public dans le contexte
des galeries d’art du 21e siècle ? Comment pouvons-nous
œuvrer tout à la fois de manière latérale, collaborative et
locale ? Comment une galerie d’art municipale peutelle contribuer à responsabiliser les citoyens et favoriser le
changement social ?
With our expanded future ever in our minds,
throughout 2015, the Board of Directors and
staff undertook a review of all aspects of
the organization. This exercise resulted in a
new vision statement and strategic priorities,
as well as new approaches to governance
and leadership.
As the ground shook with 250 blasts and the
removal of 40,000 metric tonnes of rock,
Ottawa Art Gallery continued to produce
and present an important array of exhibitions,
publications and public programs. The
Gallery also launched the Art Now - L’art ici
capital campaign, with a goal to raise $3.5
million, and announced several major gifts.

Tout au long de l’année de 2015, ayant à l’esprit le nouvel
avenir de la Galerie, le conseil d’administration et le
personnel de la GAO ont réexaminé tous les aspects de
l’organisme. Cet exercice a donné lieu à une reformulation
de notre vision et de nos priorités stratégiques, ainsi qu’à
de nouvelles approches en matière de gouvernance et de
direction de l’organisme.
Alors que le sol tremblait sous les quelques 250 secousses
produites par l’extraction de 40 000 tonnes de roche,
la Galerie d’art d’Ottawa a continué à produire et à
présenter un vaste éventail d’expositions, de publications
et de programmes publics. La Galerie a également lancé
la campagne de financement Art Now - L’art ici, avec
pour objectif d’amasser 3,5 millions de dollars, et elle a
également fait l’annonce de plusieurs dons importants.

Increase and brand the OAG as a key
civic and cultural asset for Ottawa.
The year 2015 was punctuated by major OAG
announcements and celebrations. We reached
significant milestones in the OAG Expansion
and Arts Court Redevelopment Project, and we
embraced the opportunities these afforded us
to share our successes with the community.

Faire valoir que la GAO est un atout essentiel à
la vie culturelle et civique d’Ottawa.
L’année 2015 a été marquée par
d’importantes annonces et célébrations
pour la GAO. Nous avons franchi des
jalons importants en ce qui concerne le
projet d’agrandissement de la GAO et de
réaménagement de la Cour des Arts, et
nous avons saisi les occasions qui se sont
présentées pour partager ces réussites avec
la communauté.

BUILDING FOR THE FUTURE
Shepherd the design and construction of
the new building as the visual arts and
cultural anchor of Ottawa’s urban renewal.
It all began to feel real when, in the fall,
excavation and drilling began on the
site of the new OAG. The many years
of planning, consultation and design
related to the OAG’s iconic new facility
came to fruition. And a progressive
plan for urban renewal was initiated.
We are building not only a new facility
but also an institution that will serve as a
touchstone for an increasingly thriving,
diverse and vibrant downtown core.
POUR BÂTIR L’AVENIR
The OAG celebrated with Mayor Jim Watson, the Honourable Madeleine Meilleur, MPP for Ottawa-Vanier and RideauVani­er, Ward Councillor Mathieu Fleury and Arts Court community and building partners for a first look at the construction
of the OAG Expansion and Arts Court Redevelopment project. / La GAO a invité le maire Jim Watson, l’honorable

Guider la conception et la construction du nouveau
bâtiment de la GAO pour en faire le point d’ancrage des
arts visuels et de la culture dans le cadre du projet de
rénovation urbaine d’Ottawa.
Tout a commencé à prendre forme à l’automne, quand les
travaux d’excavation et de forage ont commencé sur le site du
nouveau bâtiment emblématique de la GAO. De nombreuses
années de planification, de consultation et de conception du
nouveau projet de la GAO aboutissaient enfin, en même temps
qu’un plan de rénovation urbaine progressive était lancé. Nous
ne construisons pas simplement de nouvelles installations, mais
une institution qui sera une pierre de touche pour un centre-ville
de plus en plus florissant, diversifié et dynamique.

Change was in the air in 2015 as we entered unchartered territory
as an organization. The OAG Board of Directors and staff sought
the expertise of local professionals, collaborating to create a
clear and sustainable direction for the OAG.
Le vent du changement soufflait en 2015, pendant que notre
organisation s’aventurait en territoire inconnu. Le conseil
d’administration et le personnel ont fait appel à l’expertise
d’organisations locales, avec lesquels ils ont collaboré pour lancer

BEYOND THE GALLERY – OAG IN THE COMMUNITY
Play a leading and collaborative role in Ottawa’s arts and cultural scene.
Our programming, special events and collaboration took us out of the
gallery and into Ottawa’s diverse communities. We were thrilled to
work with our fellow arts organizations but also to discover new ways of
integrating art into the endlessly impressive community initiatives that
happen throughout the year in the city.

Être un chef de file et un collaborateur-clé dans le secteur des arts et de la
culture à Ottawa.
Dans le cadre de notre programmation régulière, de nos événements
spéciaux ou de projets en collaboration avec divers partenaires, nous
sommes sortis des murs de la Galerie pour aller à la rencontre de diverses
communautés d’Ottawa. Nous avons été ravis de travailler avec
d’autres organismes artistiques, mais aussi de découvrir de nouvelles
façons d’intégrer l’art dans la vie de la communauté, et ce grâce aux
formidables événements qui ont lieu dans la ville tout au long de l’année.

ART NOW! OTTAWA RALLIES FOR THE OAG
Raise substantial funds and increase
community support for long-term sustainability.
On September 17, we officially launched
our Capital Campaign to a warm
and enthusiastic crowd of donors and
supporters. We made it clear to Ottawa
that the time for the OAG and Ottawa’s
arts community to flourish is now!
Throughout the year we highlighted the
support of some of our major donors.
Each of these donors has a unique story
about how the OAG has affected them,
and a clear vision of how they hope the
gallery will serve future generations.

Réunir des fonds importants et accroître le soutien de
la communauté afin d’assurer la viabilité à long terme
de la GAO.
Le 17 septembre dernier, nous avons officiellement
lancé notre campagne de financement devant
une foule chaleureuse et enthousiaste de donateurs
et de bailleurs de fonds. Nous avons clairement
signifié à la communauté d’Ottawa que le temps
était venu pour la GAO et la communauté
artistique d’Ottawa de s’épanouir et de prospérer!
Tout au long de l’année, nous avons souligné
l’appui de nos principaux donateurs. Chacun
d’entre eux peut témoigner de son lien personnel
avec la GAO et peut articuler clairement ses
souhaits quant à la façon dont la Galerie servira
les générations futures.

Pretty Lofty & Heavy All at Once / Beau, noble et pesant tout à la fois
Andrew Wight
This mid-career survey of Ottawa-based artist Andrew
Wright highlighted the diversity of his practice. His
explorations with lens-based technologies and processes
derived from historical photography were juxtaposed with
his experimental approach to image-making.
Cette exposition bilan de mi-carrière de l’artiste d’Ottawa
Andrew Wright soulignait la diversité de sa pratique, son intérêt
pour les technologies et procédés qui ont jalonné l’histoire de
la photographie, ainsi son approche expérimentale pour la
création d’images.
Home Away from Home / Chez-soi loin de chez-soi

Guest Curator Wahsontiio Cross was invited to engage with
the work of Aboriginal artists from the permanent collection.
Cross assembled works that addressed issues of space/place,
belonging and home, and a relationship with landscape
and the land. This exhibition was held concurrently with the
National Arts Centre’s Ontario Scene festival in Spring 2015.
La commissaire Wahsontiio Cross a été invitée à travailler
à partir des œuvres d’artistes indigènes de la Collection
permanente de la GAO. Cross a choisi des œuvres qui
portent sur les notions d’espace et de lieu, d’appartenance
et de chez-soi, ainsi que sur notre relation au paysage et
à la terre. L’exposition a eu lieu au printemps 2015, en lien
avec le festival Scène Ontario du Centre national des Arts.
Terrors of the Breakfast Table / Terreurs à la table du petit-déjeuner
Tyler Tekatch
Presented in partnership with the Art Gallery of
Hamilton, this exhibition featured the work of
emerging experimental media artist Tyler Tekatch.
Tekatch’s interactive-film-based installation
engaged viewers with its evocative imagery and
use of innovative technology that facilitated a
visceral connection when the viewer’s breath
activated the work.
En partenariat avec la Galerie d’art de Hamilton, cette
exposition présentait le travail expérimental de l’artiste
médiatique émergent Tyler Tekatch. L’installation vidéo
interactive a séduit les spectateurs par son traitement
visuel onirique et l’utilisation de technologies innovantes,
grâce à laquelle le spectateur pouvait interagir avec
l’œuvre intimement par l’entremise de son propre
souffle.
Lynne Cohen
This exhibition of Lynne Cohen’s
large-scale photographs, dating
from the 1970s to present,
highlighted Cohen’s interest in
depicting and exploring a sense
of human trace in architectural
settings. The photographs of
spas, laboratories, hair salons,
classrooms, military training
facilities, hotel lobbies and office
spaces provoked the viewer into
giving meaning to the interior
spaces devoid of occupants.

Lynne Cohen datant des années
1970 à nos jours en témoignant
de l’intérêt que prenait l’artiste à
représenter et explorer les traces
de présence humaine dans
divers cadres architecturaux. En

installations militaires, halls
d’hôtel et espaces de bureau,
le spectateur découvrait
que les intérieurs dépourvus

All Things Being Equal / Tout bien considéré
Jessica Bell
This solo exhibition of work by RBC Painting
Competition nominee Jessica Bell, an MFA
candidate from the University of Ottawa, presented
works created as part of Bell’s MFA thesis. The
exhibition was presented in partnership with the
Visual Arts Department at the University of Ottawa.
Cette exposition solo consacrée à l’artiste Jessica
Bell, finaliste au Concours de peintures canadiennes
de RBC, était présentée dans le cadre d’une thèse
de maîtrise effectuée par l’artiste, alors étudiante à
la M.A.V de l’Université d’Ottawa. L’exposition était
présentée en collaboration avec le département
d’arts visuels de l’Université d’Ottawa.

nichola feldman-kiss
This exhibition was the first survey exhibition for midcareer artist nichola feldman-kiss. Themes including
autobiography, the body and trauma were explored
through feldman-kiss’ considerable body of installation
and video work.
Cette première exposition de mi-carrière d’envergure
consacrée à l’artiste nichola feldman-kiss présentait
un important corpus d’installations et d’œuvres vidéo
portant sur les expériences personnelles de l’artiste, le
rapport au corps et le traumatisme.
Truth of the Matter / La vérité sur la question
Rachel Kalpana James, Cindy Stelmackowich, Norman Takeuchi, Howie Tsui
This group exhibition explored the imperative role fiction plays
in coming to terms with traumatic events, finding meaning in
suffering and historicizing one’s own personal narrative. Works
from OAG’s permanent collection were exhibited alongside
new works by artists Howie Tsui, Norman Takeuchi, Cindy
Stelmackowich and Rachel Kalpana James.
Cette exposition de groupe explorait le rôle essentiel que joue la
fiction afin de composer avec des événements traumatiques, la
quête de sens dans la souffrance et l’historisation de son propre
récit. On y présentait des œuvres de la collection permanente de
la GAO en compagnie d’œuvres récentes créées par Howie Tsui,

In Focus: A Collector’s History / Aperçu. Le goût d’un collectionneur
Works from the Firestone Collection of Canadian Art are a
permanent fixture in the gallery. This annual exhibition allows for
an update of the works on display, which are but a glimpse of the
1,600 works in the Firestone Collection.

Presented in partnership with the Art Gallery of Windsor,
this exhibition highlighted Wrinch’s accomplishments as
a painter and printmaker. Vibrant landscapes and florals
were juxtaposed with depictions of Canada’s industrial
heritage. The exhibition traced how the collection of
Wrinch’s work at the AGW came to be.

ART RENTAL AND SALES
The ART Rental and Sales Gallery
serves an important function for
regional artists. It provides emerging
and established artists with the critical
opportunity to display their work in a
municipal gallery. In addition to works
consigned to the ART Rental and
Sales collection, artists collaborate
with staff to stage exhibitions
throughout the year, giving artists the
opportunity to display and sell their
work to OAG visitors.

The OAG Annex is a satellite gallery
at City Hall that allows for works
from the Firestone Collection
of Canadian Art and rotating
exhibitions of regional artists to be
displayed outside the OAG. The
space is accessible to all City Hall
visitors and serves two important
functions: expanding the OAG
audience, and increasing public
awareness and interaction with this
nationally significant collection.

LE PARTY ART AUCTION
L’ENCAN D’ART LE PARTY
Le pARTy Art Auction is the OAG’s premier annual fundraising
event, produced by our dedicated committee and led
by co-chairs Leslie McKay and Amy Jenkins. The nearly
$90,000 raised supported OAG’s curatorial and educational
programming. In 2015, this highly anticipated event attracted
more than 300 guests, and original artworks by sixty-five local
and regional artists were auctioned off. Guests enjoyed an Art
Lover’s VIP reception that allowed the OAG to collaborate
with a community partner and showcase the culinary talents
of students from the Ottawa Mission’s Food Services Training
Program. The Critics’ Choice panel of local visual arts experts,
Joe Friday, Linda Grussani and Greg Hill, chose five works that
were highlighted at the auction.

L’encan d’art le pARTy est la principale activité annuelle de levée
de fonds de la GAO. L’événement est organisé par notre vaillant
comité organisateur, sous la gouverne des coprésidentes Leslie McKay
et Amy Jenkins. Près de 90 000 $ ont été attribués aux programmes
d’expositions et éducatifs. En 2015, l’événement très attendu a attiré
plus de 300 personnes, et 65 œuvres originales créées par des artistes
de la région d’Ottawa ont été vendues. Dans le cadre d’un partenariat
avec un organisme communautaire, la GAO a offert aux Amoureux
de l’art une réception VIP qui mettait en valeur les talents culinaires des
étudiants du Programme de formation des services alimentaires de la
Mission d’Ottawa. Les experts en arts visuels Joe Friday, Linda Grussani
et Greg Hill composaient le comité Choix de la critique, chargé de
souligner la qualité de cinq œuvres.
