Series of thefts in Ottawa-Gatineau The Ottawa Police Service is seeking the public's assistance in identifying suspects involved in a series of thefts. During the months of January and February 2014, suspects attended retail stores, in the Ottawa-Gatineau area, and stole several items. Most of the Items stolen were electronics and men's fragrances. Suspect number one is described as a white male, mid 30's to mid 40's. He is wearing dark pants, a grey hoodie and black toque with a logo on the front. Suspect number two is described as a white male, 25 to 35 years old. He is wearing a black hoodie and black baseball cap. He has short dark hair and is unshaven. Three charged with extortion On February 20, 2014, the Ottawa Police Service began an investigation with the Service de police de la Ville de Montréal in relation to a complaint of extortion. On March 14, 2014 three Montreal residents were arrested in Montreal in relation to the extortion of the sum of $20,000. of a 48 year old man. Marty ANTOINE, 32 years old, Guy KELLY, 50 years old, and Stephanie HIEKE, 20 years old, of Montreal were charged with one count each of Extortion, Conspiracy to commit an indictable offence and Theft under. 3. Scam directed at motorists The Ottawa Police Service would like to warn the public of a theft scam targeting motorists and urges them to protect their valuables in their vehicles. On three recent occasions, people had tires from their vehicle tampered with to the point where they were deflated. As the victim tends to their vehicle, a stranger would approach and offer assistance. While the driver is out of the car tending to the tire, valuable items are stolen from the vehicle by the stranger and/or sometimes by an accomplice. These incidents occurred in several locations across Ottawa - including in parking lots and on streets - at various times of day. At this time, it is unknown if all three reported incidents involve the same suspect or if they are related. There is a vague suspect description available, heavyset middle eastern male. Anyone with information about any such incidents is asked to contact Det. Stephen Plummer, East District Investigations of the Ottawa Police Service at 613-236-1222, ext. 3415 or Crime Stoppers at 613-233-8477 or toll-free at 1-800-222-8477. *********************** 1. The more calls that you make, the more neighbourhood services we receive. There are three steps to making the call: a) Deciding which number to phone. If you have an emergency or see a crime in progress, call 9-1-1. If your car was broken into or you need police to attend another non-urgent situation, please call the “other emergencies” number (613-230-6211). To report an incident after it occurred without police attending the scene, please call 613-236-1222 – ext. 7300. You can reach by-law services at 3-1-1. b) Getting a report number. When the dispatcher answers, it is a good idea to ask for a report number immediately. We’ve found that dispatchers sometimes hang up before we get to ask for a number or we forget. Asking for a report number right away solves these problems. c) Share your report number and incident. Please e-mail your report numbers and a brief description of the incident to your Block Captain (if you have one), or directly to us. Importance of Reporting Prostitution and Problem Addresses Neighbourhood Watch members can support the police by writing down and phoning in important information such as: vehicle descriptions and license plate numbers (specify Ontario or Quebec) of anyone soliciting prostitutes, descriptions of drug dealers and addresses of crack houses. Graffiti If you spot graffiti, call 3-1-1. Graffiti kits are available from your city councillor.
