The “Hermès hors les murs” festival of craftsmanship will be in residence at the Carreau du Temple
in Paris from 18 to 26 November 2016. Artisans representing ten métiers from the Parisian
house will leave the secrecy of their workshops at Hermès to bring their work, their experience and
their passion to you. Bags, saddles, gloves, silk scarves, ties, watches, jewellery…
the making of all these Hermès objects will be revealed.
Continue your visit with:
creative workshops, discussions, the dedicated bookshop, and the organic café.

of contemporary issues such as employment, training, long-term relationships,
injecting impetus into regions, etc.
DISCUSSIONS
“Hermès hors les murs” examines issues
relating to contemporary craftsmanship
with eight discussions. Led by Andrée
Fraiderik-Vertino, journalist and consultant, and Hugues Jacquet, socio-historian
specialising in know-how, these round
tables aim to promote an understanding
of the changes and current contributions
to know-how.
Friday, 18 November at 7 pm
• Draw me a scarf
Andrée Fraiderik-Vertino
Above and beyond the creative content,
the entire history and artistic vision of
Hermès goes into these few centimetres
of silk or cashmere. Through colour and
fabric, the scarf is born of the meticulous
gestures of our artisans, before intertwining with desires.

the Design and Graphic Art Studio at Hermès,
Ménéhould de Bazelaire du Chatelle, director
of Cultural Heritage at Hermès, Pierre Marie,

• Thinking and acting locally
Hugues Jacquet
Behind the “Made in France” label and its
guarantee of quality, there is a countrywide network linking private and publicsector players with the whole of civil
society. The socio-economic ties that bind

• Materials and colours
Andrée Fraiderik-Vertino
“Form, colour and material are intrinsically linked,” says architect and designer
Enzo Mari. Material and colour coexist
within objects and help define them, their
use, our perception of them and our inclination to turn them into companions in
daily life. The designer working alongside the artisan composes, imagines and
innovates with associations of colours and
materials.
Contributors: matali crasset, industrial designer and artist, president of the jury for the
Émile Hermès Prize 2016, Frédéric Rossi-Liegibel,
researcher at the CNRS, professor at SaintÉtienne (contemporary history of design) and at
the Camondo School (semiotics)
Sunday, 20 November at 11 am
• Teaching young people the métiers d’art
Andrée Fraiderik-Vertino
Our hands are key tools that help us discover,
express, teach and learn, but which also contribute to socio-professional integration. Pilot
projects, associations and case studies will
explore the issues involved in raising young
people’s awareness of the métiers d’art.
Contributors: Clément Le Duc, head of social
programmes at the Fondation d’entreprise

disciplines

explores a variety of initiatives in France
and abroad focusing on the principles
of collaboration and sharing expertise in
order to shed light on the future of knowhow and craftsmanship.
Contributors: Catherine Tsekenis, director of the
Fondation d’entreprise Hermès, Grégoire Talon,

• The materials and tools of the future
Hugues Jacquet
This discussion explores new technologies in the processing of materials (3D
printing) as well as technical textiles
and smart textiles. Of what will the materials of the future be made, and how?

École nationale supérieure d’arts et métiers
(ENSAM), Daniel Poirié, industrial director of
Holding Textile Hermès (HTH)
Friday, 25 November at 5 pm
• Craftsmanship, the circular economy
and the relationship with time
Hugues Jacquet
Not every component of the raw materials needed to produce an object is always
used. Inspired by artisanal practices,
today’s world seeks a new definition of
production methods, seeing in manufacturing by-products an unexploited source
of inventiveness and new solutions.
Contributors: Pascale Mussard, artistic director
of petit h with an invited artisan and designer, Philippe Schiesser, eco-design engineer,
president of the Apedec, associate professor
of circular economics at the University of
Cergy-Pontoise
Saturday, 26 November at 11 am
• Promoting knowledge about know-how
Andrée Fraiderik-Vertino
How should know-how be demonstrated
and explained? How should a desire to
discover, learn, understand and practise
the métiers d’art be fostered? Dedicated
exhibitions and festivals play a key role.
