PRESS KIT Week 1 AC Ajaccio - AS Saint-Etienne Date & Time Sunday, August 11, 2013 - 17:00 Stadium Stade François Coty 08/10/2013 - Ligue de Football Professionnel - 2013/2014 - Ligue1.com Week 1 AC Ajaccio - AS Saint-Etienne PREVIEW : AC AJACCIO - AS SAINT-ETIENNE AC Ajaccio - AS Saint-Etienne Feature Preview Fabrizio Ravanelli makes his professional coaching début on Sunday afternoon when Saint-Etienne visit Ajaccio. The White Feather's training methods imported from Juventus have made for a tough pre-season for the Corsican club's players. There has been a lot of movement in and out of the club during the close season as 2012-2013's 17th-placed finishers aim for a more comfortable season this time around. Among the playing arrivals are experienced full-backs Laurent Bonnart and Cédric Hengbart, as well as classy midfielder Benoît Pedretti, but it's the arrival of Ravanelli - an OM player between 1997 and 2000 - that has attracted the greatest amount of media interest. Latterly coach of Juventus' reserve team as well as director of the club's youth academy, the 44-year-old has fulfilled his dream of a number one position in the professional game. A Champions League winner with Juventus in 1996, Ravanelli is under no illusions as to what the job entails: "I know that being a coach is a very difficult job, a special job. I need to give it my all just as I did when I was a player. I'll try to do the best I can in order to stay as long as possible at Ajaccio. My team will battle in every game and play with a lot of character. We need to be strong mentally as everything's dependent on that." Ajaccio president Alain Orsoni describes Ravanelli as an experienced leader who has brought much-needed greater discipline to the club. That discipline led to punishing pre-season sessions supervised by Giampero Ventrone, described by Ravanelli as the top fitness trainer in Europe. Ravanelli said: "I found the training methods very tough when I was young and now I'm able to transmit them to my squad. I'm putting things into place with my coaching team and I'm certain my players don't know their true potential. I'm proud of my players. Before being players, they are above all men. They have worked really well despite the toughness of the training sessions. We want to put in a good season and not have to secure our Ligue 1 status on the final day." Sunday will be Saint-Etienne's third competitive outing of the season. On Thursday evening Les Verts were 3-0 winners in Moldova over FC Mislami Orhei to complete a 6-0 aggregate victory and reach the Europa League play-offs. Christophe Galtier's side finished fifth in Ligue 1 last terms and beat Rennes in the Coupe de la Ligue final to secure the first silverware since the last of the French record 10 Ligue 1 titles claimed in 1981. Galtier's reward was a two-year contract extension, taking him through to the end of the 2015-2016 season. This campaign Saint-Etienne will have to find a way to replace Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang's goals. The Gabonese international made the Ligue 1 team of the season thanks to his 19 league strikes and eight assists. ASSE sold the speedster to Champions League runners-up Borussia Dortmund for a fee that could rise to a reported 17 million euros should bonuses kick in and Galtier said: "Aubameyang's departure is a collective success story. The page has been turned. There have been other great players here in the past and the club still exists." Saint-Etienne's success has been achieved despite the club's budget being cut from 66 million euros four years ago to 49 million euros for the upcoming season. Club president Roland Romeyer said "We had a good league season last year with a coach that managed to live up to the demands placed on him by the board. We respect our opponents and referees. We finished top of the Fair Play league. If we keep the same spirit this season and stay united then we'll keep getting good results. We know that in this two-speed championship we'll only be able to pick up crumbs. Qualifying for the Champions League from now on will be incredibly, incredibly tough. Getting into Europe means performing well in the Cup competitions and they'll be our objectives. We'll also give it our all in the Europa League." 08/10/2013 Ligue de Football Professionnel - 2013/2014 - Ligue1.com 2 Week 1 AC Ajaccio - AS Saint-Etienne AC Ajaccio - AS Saint-Etienne - HISTORY: Ajaccio have hosted Saint-Etienne 10 times in France's top division.
