PRESS KIT Week 14 AC Ajaccio - Olympique de Marseille Date & Time Friday, November 22, 2013 - 20:30 Stadium Stade François Coty 11/21/2013 - Ligue de Football Professionnel - 2013/2014 - Ligue1.com Week 14 AC Ajaccio - Olympique de Marseille PREVIEW : AC AJACCIO - OLYMPIQUE DE MARSEILLE AC Ajaccio - Olympique de Marseille Feature Preview Having seen the French national side make a remarkable comeback in midweek, Olympique de Marseille will hope to continue their return to form at struggling AC Ajaccio on Friday night. Mathieu Valbuena's sparkling display helped France overcome their 2-0 first-leg deficit to beat Ukraine 3-0 at the Stade de France on Tuesday evening and earn a place at next summer's World Cup finals. The diminutive attacking midfielder, who himself admitted to a dip in form prior to the international break, will be the creative hub of the OM side at the Stade François Coty with Elie Baup - in his 500th L1 game - aiming to stretch his team's unbeaten run to three matches. After a run of three straight league losses - and five successive reverses in all competitions - OM stemmed the tide with a draw at Stade Rennais FC before securing a 2-1 victory over FC Sochaux-Montbéliard last time out. "Before the game against Sochaux, the objective was to pick up the three points, we did that," said Benoît Cheyrou. "Now, not everything was perfect, but the important thing was to win. Before that game we'd been on a catastrophic run, our situation wasn't very comfortable. We had to win because we knew the international break would allow us to work well, recoup some energy and for the international players to be able to focus on other objectives. We head off again on Friday to pick up points in Ajaccio and regain momentum." The omens are good with OM enjoying a better record in meetings at the Stade François Coty than their Corsican hosts. The Ayew brothers, André and Jordan, both struck in last season's 2-0 win there, though Baup will be without the former this time after he sustained a meniscus injury that requires surgery while on international duty with Ghana; his expected eight-week absence will be keenly felt. However, Florian Thauvin, whose early opener against Sochaux was his second strike in three league outings, has started to show the sort of form he displayed in Corsica at SC Bastia last season, and though he can expect a raucous welcome, the French Under-21 international will - along with André-Pierre Gignac, the matchwinner against Sochaux - provide most threat to the hosts. It is not only their opponents who have caused Ajaccio problems this season. The abrupt end to Fabrizio Ravanelli's 12-game reign, in which the side won just a single league game, did not help improve stability at a club which has seen three coaches come and go in little more than a season. Interim coach Christian Bracconi's first game in charge ended in a valiant 1-1 draw at Toulouse FC, and the club's former youth academy director must now turn his attention to improving his team's woeful home form. That will surely come if he can give his attack teeth. No team has scored fewer goals this season than Ajaccio, and with not even the excellent Guillermo Ochoa able to keep out everything at the opposite end, Bracconi's men have struggled, and are winless in five. They will also be without former OM men Ronald Zubar and Benoît Pedretti, who are both injured, hardly welcome absences as they hope to keep the visitors' vaunted attacking talents at bay. "There's Thauvin, Valbuena, Gignac, Payet. They have great attacking potential. They're dangerous," Bracconi explained. "We have to have the intention of going forward, more than merely the players we put in the side. We can't stay up if we don't show more up front, without scoring more goals. We need to be more attacking to put our opponents in danger." 11/21/2013 Ligue de Football Professionnel - 2013/2014 - Ligue1.com 2 Week 14 AC Ajaccio - Olympique de Marseille He added: "We're at home, we need points, we need to win. With our spirit and a certain degree of refound confidence, our idea is to get at OM. We absolutely must not allow ourselves to be walked all over at home." AC Ajaccio - Olympique de Marseille - HISTORY: There have been 12 Ligue 1 meetings between the pair. While AC Ajaccio have four wins, Olympique de Marseille boast five triumphs in Corsica. - LAST SEASON: André Ayew (55') and his younger brother Jordan (87') struck to give OM a 2-0 win in Week 11. The pair played out a goalless draw at the Stade Velodrome in Week 29. - OM's victory last season was the first time they had avoided defeat in four visits. - OLD BOYS: Ronald Zubar played 72 L1 games (2 goals) for OM between 2006 and 2009 before moving to English club Wolverhampton Wanderers. - Benoît Pedretti played 31 games (3 goals) in the 2004-05 season for OM, his sole campaign at the Stade Vélodrome. - Salim Arrache featured in 12 L1 games (0 goals) for OM between 2006 and '09, but spent half of the 2007-08 season on loan at Toulouse FC and the entire following campaign on loan at Stade de Reims. - AC AJACCIO - GENERAL: The Corsican club come into Week 14 in 19th place on eight points, a point ahead of bottom team FC Sochaux-Montbéliard and three adrift of safety. - In Christian Bracconi's first game in charge, Ajaccio drew 1-1 at Toulouse FC last time out. Paul Lasne curled home a superb seventh-minute opener to put the visitors in front, but Issiaga Sylla levelled (42'). - The point stemmed a run of four straight league defeats and five losses in all competitions. - Ajaccio are winless in five league games - they started the season with three draws and three defeats. - Their only success came with a 2-1 victory over Olympique Lyonnais in Week 7. - The win over OL represents Ajaccio's only triumph in their last 17 league fixtures, and 18 matches in all competitions. - Ajaccio have won only two of their last 23 league games. - With nine goals scored this season, Ajaccio have struck the net the fewest times of any L1 team. Only four teams have conceded more goals (19). - Lasne's two league goals this season make him the team's top scorer, he is the only player to have struck more than once. - Johan Cavalli has a team-high two assists. - Goalkeeper Guillermo Ochoa is the only ever-present in the squad; Benjamin André has missed just one league game. - With 27 yellow cards and two red, Ajaccio's disciplinary record is better than just three L1 rivals. Only one club, Saint-Etienne, have picked up more bookings. - HOME FORM: Ajaccio have the worst home record in Ligue 1 having picked up just five points from seven games (1W 2D 4L). - Ajaccio won the only home game in which they took the lead this season. - Only Toulouse and Sochaux (5 each) have scored fewer times at home this season (Ajaccio 6), only AS Saint-Etienne (11) have conceded more (10) - Ajaccio have picked up only four fewer points than Marseille at home this season. - They - along with Valenciennes and Sochaux - share the lowest tally of home wins in the division (1). - COUPE DE LA LIGUE: Ajaccio were knocked out by local rivals SC Bastia on 29 October in a game played behind closed doors 11/21/2013 Ligue de Football Professionnel - 2013/2014 - Ligue1.com 3 Week 14 AC Ajaccio - Olympique de Marseille following violence at last season's Corsican derbies. Ilan's seventh-minute goal was enough for the hosts. - TEAM NEWS: Adrian Mutu (back), Benoît Pedretti (calf), Ricardo Faty (foot) and Ronald Zubar (thigh) are injured. Denis Oliech, Chahir Belghazouani and Sigamary Diarra have been left out of the squad while Salim Arrache, Alessandro Crescenzi and Johan Cavalli return. - TRIVIA - With Bracconi not yet in possession of the required coaching licence for Ligue 1, former OM and Ajaccio coach Albert Emon has agreed for his name to be put on the official matchsheet as the hosts' coach. - OLYMPIQUE DE MARSEILLE - GENERAL: Marseille come into Week 14 in fifth place in Ligue 1 with 21 points from 13 games. They have won six, drawn three and lost four of their games to date and trail FC Nantes in fourth by two points, AS Monaco in third by five points and leaders Paris Saint-Germain by ten points. - Marseille had not been lower than fourth place until they lost at OGC Nice in Week 10 when they slipped to fifth. They had been top of the table after Week 3. - Marseille won 2-1 at home to Sochaux last time out. Florian Thauvin (5') gave the hosts an early lead only for Emmanuel Mayuka to score a stunning equaliser (60'). However, Andre-Pierre Gignac came off the bench to tuck away a late penalty (83') to secure OM a first league win in five league outings. - OM had picked up just a point in their previous four league games ahead of Week 13, and were winless in seven in all competitions. Before their 1-1 Week 12 draw at Stade Rennais FC, they had lost five successive matches in all competitions, including three in the league. - They had lost just once in L1 in the opening eight games. - Only four teams have found the net more times than OM this season (18, with AS Saint-Etienne), while only five teams have conceded fewer goals (13). - Their 3-1 win at En Avant Guingamp on the opening day is the only game in which they have scored more than twice, while they have failed to score at all in two games. - Gignac has a team-high five L1 goals while Dimitri Payet, who has not scored since Week 2, has three. Lucas Mendes, André Ayew and Thauvin have all scored twice in the league. - Mathieu Valbuena has provided three assists, a contribution bettered only by Monaco's James Rodriguez (5) within L1. - They have kept four clean sheets and have not conceded more than four goals in any one game. Indeed, the 3-2 defeat to Stade de Reims in Week 11 was the first time Marseille had conceded more than twice in any of their last 29 Ligue 1 games since going down 3-1 at Sochaux on January 13. - Nicolas Nkoulou, Steve Mandanda, Alaixys Romao, and Valbuena have started all 13 Ligue 1 games so far this season. - Nkoulou has played in OM's last 51 league games, the longest such streak in the top flight. - Gennaro Bracigliano has made 150 Ligue 1 appearances although he has never played a league game for OM since signing from Nancy in 2011. - Romao's made his 175th Ligue 1 appearance against Reims. He has played in all of OM's last 28 top-flight matches. - Saber Khalifa's made his first start for OM after eight substitute appearances against Reims. It was also his 50th start in Ligue 1. - OM are one of five clubs yet to have a man sent off in league action this season. AWAY FORM: Marseille have the second-best away record in the division having registered 12 points on their seven trips to date (3W 3D 1L). - They have won all three away games in which they took the lead and twice come back from going 1-0 down to draw (1L). - Only LOSC Lille (2) have conceded fewer goals away from home this season (4). 11/21/2013 Ligue de Football Professionnel - 2013/2014 - Ligue1.com 4 Week 14 AC Ajaccio - Olympique de Marseille - OM picked up 31 points (9W 4D 6L) away from home last season - only champions PSG did better (40 points). - COUPE DE LA LIGUE: As one of France's European representatives, Marseille earn a bye directly through to the last 16, where they face Toulouse FC on 17 December. - CHAMPIONS LEAGUE: Marseille are bottom of Group F and out of the competition having lost all four group-stage games to date. They face Arsenal FC in north London on Tuesday. - TEAM NEWS: Having missed the last two games suspended, André Ayew sits out this one too after sustaining a knee injury on international duty with Ghana. He will undergo an operation on Monday on damaged meniscus in the joint and faces up to eight weeks on the sidelines. Rod Fanni remains short of match fitness after an adductor problem. - Goalkeeping coach Laurent Spinosi began a five-game touchline ban on 5 November after insulting the referee and the PSG bench during the duo's Week 9 encounter at the Stade Vélodrome. - TRIVIA - The game marks Elie Baup's 500th in Ligue 1, the most of any current top-flight coach bar Jean Fernandez. Baup's record reads: 192W 146D 161L AC Ajaccio - The Athletic Club Ajaccio was founded in 1910, but will play only its 13th Ligue 1 season during the 2013-14 campaign. - The club's sixth-placed finish at the end of the 1970-71 season is its best top-flight performance to date. - After picking up just two points from their final four matches of the season, Ajaccio finished the 2012-13 season 17th, two points above the drop zone. The club had sustained a three-point penalty (with one point suspended) at the start of the campaign following crowd violence late in the previous season. - The Stade François Coty (capacity 12,000) has been the club's home since 1968. A number of improvements have been made since 1992 and most notably since 2007 to bring the stadium up to L1 standards. However, the original pitch was only changed in 2012. - Christian Bracconi was put in temporary charge of the first team until the 2013/14 winter break at least after Fabrizio Ravanelli was sacked in early November 2013. Bracconi was promoted from his position as director of the club's youth academy. A former striker, he notably played for FC Metz, with whom he won the Coupe de France in 1988. - Ravanelli was relieved of his duties as first team coach after the Week 12 loss at home to Valenciennes FC in early November 2013. He had been given his first senior coaching role only the previous summer when he stepped in after Albert Emon, who had succeeded Alex Dupont midway through the 2012-13 season, stepped down. A Champions League, UEFA Cup and Serie A winner in a glittering playing career as a striker with Juventus, Olympique de Marseille and Lazio among others, Ravanelli was capped 21 times by Italy. After hanging up his boots in 2005, he had been coaching youth teams at Juventus since 2011. Olympique de Marseille - Founded in 1899, Marseille have been crowned Ligue 1 champions nine times (1937, '48, '71, '72, '89, '90, '91, '92, 2010) - second only to Saint-Etienne, who have ten L1 titles. OM also have a record ten Coupes de France (1924, '26, '27, '35, '38, '43, '69, '72, '76 and '89) and a record-equalling (with PSG and Bordeaux) three Coupes de la Ligue (2010, '11, '12). - Marseille are the only French club to have won the Champions League (1993), Basile Boli scoring the only goal of a 1-0 win over AC Milan. OM were runners-up in 1991, losing 5-3 on penalties (0-0 a.e.t.) to Red Star Belgrade, as well as reaching the final of the 11/21/2013 Ligue de Football Professionnel - 2013/2014 - Ligue1.com 5 Week 14 AC Ajaccio - Olympique de Marseille UEFA CUP in 1999 and 2004. - OM's home stadium is the Stade Vélodrome. Renovations currently under way in preparation for hosting matches in Euro 2016 will see capacity rise from 48,000 to 67,000. - Coach Elie Baup replaced current France boss Didier Deschamps on July 4, 2012. Baup has also coached Saint-Etienne, Nantes, Toulouse and Bordeaux, with whom he won the Ligue 1 title in 1999 and the Coupe de la Ligue in 2002. - OM finished second last season, nine points behind champions PSG, clinching a place in the Champions League group stage. They failed to progress from the group stage of the Europa League last season. 2-0 losses to arch-rivals PSG saw OM crash out in the round of 16 of both the Coupe de la Ligue and the Coupe de France. - OM were stripped of the Ligue 1 title in 1993, after being found guilty of match-fixing. - Notable former OM players include Franck Ribéry, Chris Waddle, Jean-Pierre Papin, Didier Drogba, Fabien Barthez, Laurent Blanc, Alen Boksic, Jean Tigana, Eric Cantona, Didier Deschamps, Robert Pirès, Samir Nasri and Enzo Francescoli. 11/21/2013 Ligue de Football Professionnel - 2013/2014 - Ligue1.com 6 Week 14 AC Ajaccio - Olympique de Marseille KEY STATISTICS : AC AJACCIO - OLYMPIQUE DE MARSEILLE AC Ajaccio Olympique de Marseille HOME STATISTICS AWAY STATISTICS W-D-L-L D-W-L-D Standings 20th 2th Points tally / Total possible 5 / 21 12 / 21 Points per game 0.71 1.71 Win(s) 1 3 Draw(s) 2 3 Loss(es) 4 1 GF 6 8 GA 10 4 0.86 1.14 Yellow card(s) 14 13 Red card(s) 2 0 Form Guide Goals per game FIRST GOAL SCORED When ...
