PREVIEW : AC AJACCIO - AS MONACO FC
AC Ajaccio - AS Monaco FC Feature Preview
AS Monaco FC can further their ambitions of securing a coveted place in the Champions League group stage with victory over
already-relegated AC Ajaccio on Saturday.
Last weekend's south-coast derby victory over OGC Nice ensured Monaco will play some part in European club football's elite club
competition next season by virtue of a top-three finish in the top flight. However, the difference between finishing third and higher is
huge. While the top two in L1 get direct access to the lucrative encounters of the group stage, the team finishing on the last step of
the podium will have to negotiate the third qualifying round and then a potentially hazardous play-off to secure their place among the
continent's very best 32 teams.
Victory at the Stade François Coty will go a long way towards clinching that berth for Claudio Ranieri's men, and would mean LOSC
Lille, who are currently in third, eight points behind, would have to match that result at home to Girondins de Bordeaux on Sunday to
retain a hope of overhauling the principality club.
It could also keep Monaco's slim title chances alive, though Ranieri's side's fate is in the hands of Paris Saint-Germain, who with a
victory of their own at FC Sochaux-Montbéliard on Sunday, would seal a successful title defence.
Second place would, however, see Ranieri fulfil the club's ambition at the start of the season, that of qualifying for the Champions
League, and the Italian remains confident his team will do that particularly after bouncing back from their Coupe de France semi-final
loss to En Avant Guingamp with a derby win.
"The players showed pride and strength. They played really well, even though it was difficult, because derbies are always difficult,"
said Ranieri after Dimitar Berbatov's early goal had given his side the Côte d'Azur spoils. "But I'm satisfied with the display of my
players. They are very intelligent. Anyone can have a bad game. The most important thing is to pick yourself up. Like you, I was
waiting to see how my team was going to react. And it reacted very well."
Ranieri's opposite number, Christian Bracconi, might also be pondering how his team will respond to their relegation, which was
sealed with a derby defeat to SC Bastia last weekend. Though that fate has seemed inevitable for much of the campaign, Sébastien
Squillaci's late winner in Bastia's 2-1 triumph was particularly cruel, though Bracconi feels his team can see out a disappointing
campaign proudly.
"We've known for a while that we would be relegated so nothing has changed really. We've had our heads on the block since
November 14. Now it's official," stated Bracconi, who will be without Ronald Zubar, Johan Cavalli and Sigamary Diarra for the visit of
Monaco.
"I think the players will step up to finish the season with our heads held high. We?ve been very courageous for the last few months
and being relegated won't change how we do things on a daily basis. Relegation was unavoidable really. The important thing is to
quickly bounce back and start building for the future."

Week 35
AC Ajaccio - AS Monaco FC
AC Ajaccio - AS Monaco FC
- HISTORY: There have been seven L1 encounters between the pair in Corsica. AC Ajaccio have registered four wins, AS Monaco
FC three.
- Ajaccio won both their last two top-flight home meetings with Monaco, scoring four times without conceding.
- LAST TIME: The duo last met in L1 in Corsica on 18 March, 2006. Ajaccio won 1-0 thanks to a goal from Moussa N'Diaye (12').
- THIS SEASON: Emmanuel Rivière scored the only goal of the game 15 minutes from time as Monaco won in Week 17. Ajaccio's
Jean-Baptiste Pierazzi had been sent off for a second bookable offence just after the hour mark (62').
- AC AJACCIO
- GENERAL: Ajaccio come into Week 35 bottom of the table with just 20 points from 34 games. They have won three, drawn 11 and
lost 20 of their matches to date and are already condemned to relegation to Ligue 2.
- The Corsican club lost their fight for survival with their 2-1 defeat to neighbours SC Bastia last time out. Though Aboubacar Camara
(4') gave them an early lead, Florian Raspentino equalised (32') before Sébastien Squillaci's 89th-minute winner sealed Ajaccio's fate.
- Ajaccio have not been higher than 13th this season and have spent 18 weeks in the relegation zone. They have been in the bottom
three since a 2-1 defeat at Guingamp in late October and have propped up the table since a 4-1 loss at Reims in their last game
before Christmas.
- They have taken just two points from their last four league games with their last victory the dramatic 3-2 triumph at fellow strugglers
Valenciennes FC in Week 30.
- They have won two, drawn seven and lost 13 of their league games since Christian Bracconi replaced Fabrizio Ravanelli as coach.
Under Ravanelli, they took seven points from 12 games.
- The ACA have managed just four wins in 44 Ligue 1 games since the middle of March last year, and just five wins in 48.
- The Corsicans have scored just 33 goals this season, only three teams have scored fewer. They have failed to score at all in ten
games, while the 3-1 home win against Stade Rennais on February 8 and the 3-2 win at Valenciennes FC on 22 March are the only
matches in which they have netted more than twice.
- Gadji Tallo has a team-high six league goals while Benjamin André has struck four times.
- Ajaccio have conceded 63 goals, the most of any L1 team, and five more than Valenciennes, the next-leakiest side in the top flight.
- They have kept two clean sheets - in consecutive goalless draws in August - and have conceded three or more goals on eight
occasions, including the 4-0 hammering at Bordeaux on December 1.
- No Ajaccio player has appeared in every game this season. Guillermo Ochoa and André have both featured 33 times.
- Ajaccio have picked up four red cards this season: Benjamin André (v Saint-Etienne, Wk 1), Claude Gonçalves (v Montpellier, Wk
8), Joshua Nadeau (v SC Bastia, Wk 16), Jean-Baptiste Pierazzi (v Monaco, Wk 17).
- Guillermo Ochoa made his 100th Ligue 1 appearance in the defeat at Montpellier on 22 February.
- HOME FORM: With a record of 2W 6D 9L at home this season, Ajaccio have registered the lowest tally (12 points) of any L1 side on
their own turf this season.
- They have struck 20 times at home - only four teams have scored fewer home goals - while they have conceded 28, the joint-highest
tally in the division along with Valenciennes.
- Tallo has a team-high four goals at home.
- After going 1-0 up at home this season, Ajaccio's record reads: 2W 2D 3L. They have picked up three points (3D) from the nine
home games in which they have conceded the opening goal.
- They have drawn their last two home L1 outings having lost the previous two. Their last home win was their 3-1 defeat of Stade
Rennais FC in Week 24.

2-0 at home by SM Caen of Ligue 2 in the round of 32.

in a game played on neutral territory in Martigues.
- JANUARY TRANSFERS IN: None.

- TEAM NEWS: Ronald Zubar (thigh), Johan Cavalli (calf) and Sigamary Diarra (hamstring) are all out. Claude Dielna (hamstring)
missed training earlier in the week, while Denis Tonucci and Benoît Pedretti returned to training.
- AS MONACO FC
- GENERAL: Monaco came into Week 35 in second place in Ligue 1 with 72 points from 34 games. They have won 21, drawn nine
and lost four of their games to date, and are 10 points behind leaders Paris Saint-Germain. They are also eight points clear of LOSC
Lille in third.
- Following PSG's win over Evian-Thonon-Gaillard FC in midweek, the capital club will clinch the title with victory at FC
Sochaux-Montbeliard on Sunday regardless of Monaco's result.
- The victory over Nice means Monaco are certain to finish in the top three this season, earning them a place in the Champions
League third qualifying round.
- Claudio Ranieri's men will secure second place in the table - synonymous with automatic qualification for the Champions League
group stage - if they win at Ajaccio and LOSC Lille fail to match that result at home to Girondins de Bordeaux.
- The principality club have not been lower than fourth this season and were top of the table from Week 4 until drawing with Sochaux
in Week 10. They have sat second ever since beating AC Ajaccio 1-0 on December 8.
- In their last outing, Claudio Ranieri's side were 1-0 winners at home to OGC Nice. Dimitar Berbatov (5') scored the only goal of the
game.
- Monaco have lost just twice in 15 league games in 2014 (9W, 4D). Only PSG (38) have claimed more points this calendar year than
Monaco's 31.
- The principality side have scored 55 goals so far this season. Only PSG (75) had scored more coming into the weekend. They have
scored three goals or more on six occasions and have failed to find the net at all in just four games.
- Emmanuel Rivière (10) is the club's leading scorer ahead of Radamel Falcao and James Rodriguez (both 9), Layvin Kurzawa, who
has five, and Berbatov who has three.
- Berbatov has been involved in six of Monaco's last nine goals (3 goals 3 assists).
- James Rodriguez has provided 11 assists, placing him joint-top of the table with PSG's Zlatan Ibrahimovic. Joao Moutinho has set
up four goals and Layvin Kurzawa three.
- Ranieri's team have conceded 27 goals, giving them the third-best defensive record behind PSG (19) and Lille (20). They have kept
14 clean sheets, including five in a row from Weeks 14-18.
- Goalkeeper Danijel Subasic and defender Ricardo Carvalho have both started 33 matches. James Rodriguez has featured 32 times
in the league (28 starts/4 subs).
- Coming into the weekend, Monaco were one of only two clubs, along with Marseille, yet to have a player sent off this season.

only sides to have conceded fewer goals 'on the road' than ASM (15).

and conceded a division-low 14.
- COUPE DE FRANCE: At the semi-final stage, Monaco fell 3-1 at En Avant Guingamp after extra-time on 16 April. Mustapha
Yatabaré (6' and 117') and Fatih Atik (112') scored for Guingamp. Dimitar Berbatov (36') scored the Monaco goal.

Chasselay in January. Layvin Kurzawa (thigh) remains sidelined.
AC Ajaccio
- The Athletic Club Ajaccio was founded in 1910, but will play only its 13th Ligue 1 season during the 2013-14 campaign.
- The club's sixth-place finish at the end of the 1970-71 season is its best top-flight performance to date.
- After picking up just two points from their final four matches of the season, Ajaccio finished the 2012-13 season 17th, two points
above the drop zone. The club had sustained a three-point penalty (with one point suspended) at the start of the campaign following
crowd violence late in the previous season.
- The Stade François-Coty (capacity 12,000) has been the club's home since 1968. A number of improvements have been made
since 1992 and most notably since 2007 to bring the stadium up to L1 standards. However, the original pitch was only changed in
2012.
- Christian Bracconi was put in temporary charge of the first team until the 2013/14 winter break at least after Fabrizio Ravanelli was
sacked in early November 2013. Bracconi was promoted from his position as director of the club's youth academy. A former striker,

he notably played for FC Metz, with whom he won the Coupe de France in 1988.
- Ravanelli was relieved of his duties as first team coach after the Week 12 loss at home to Valenciennes FC in early November 2013.
He had been given his first senior coaching role only the previous summer when he stepped in after Albert Emon, who had
succeeded Alex Dupont midway through the 2012-13 season, stepped down. A Champions League, UEFA Cup and Serie A winner in
a glittering playing career as a striker with Juventus, Olympique de Marseille and Lazio among others, Ravanelli was capped 21 times
by Italy. After hanging up his boots in 2005, he had been coaching youth teams at Juventus since 2011.
AS Monaco FC
- Founded in 1924, AS Monaco FC have been French champions on seven occasions (1961, 1963, 1978, 1982, 1988, 1997 and
2000). The club have lifted the Coupe de France trophy five times (1960, 1963, 1980, 1985 and 1991) and the Coupe de la Ligue
once in 2003.
- Monaco reached the 2004 Champions League final under Didier Deschamps, losing 3-0 to Jose Mourinho's Porto in the final in
Gelsenkirchen. They reached the Champions League semi-finals in both 1994 and 1998. In 1992 Monaco reached the final of the
now-defunct Cup Winners' Cup, losing 2-0 to Bundesliga club Werder Bremen.
- Monaco returned to Ligue 1 after two seasons away by being crowned Ligue 2 champions in 2012-2013. They finished six points
clear of second-placed Guingamp.
- Ibrahima Touré top-scored for Monaco in Ligue 2 with 18 goals.
- Italian Claudio Ranieri took over from compatriot Marco Simone as coach in May 2012. Formerly coach of, among others, Valencia,
Atletico Madrid, Chelsea, Juventus and Inter Milan, Ranieri has never won a top-flight domestic title.
- Russian billionaire Dimitry Rybolovlev, the club's majority shareholder and president, took control of the club in December 2011.
- Monaco play at the 18,500 capacity Stade Louis II.
- Radamel Falcao, a 2013 summer signing from Atletico Madrid, is the latest in a long line of world-class forwards to have featured for
Monaco. Club record scorer Delio Onnis, Victor Ikpeba, Shabani Nonda, Sonny Anderson, George Weah, Thierry Henry and David
Trezeguet are among the great names from the past.
