J 945 27 The taste for exotic decoration and techniques produced imitations and encrustations in artworks that eventually led to the creation of original patterns, such as Boucher's chinoiserie designs, and new techniques like Vernis Martin. The latter was a varnish developed by the Martin brothers in Paris in the 1730s. It was made from a subfossil resin and used in imitation of Japanese lacquer.
