The model for this porcelain piece was created by Kaendler, circa 1762, from a white group produced by the Vincennes factory ca. 1750, which in its turn was inspired by an engraving by André Laurent, The Amorous Shepherd. Laurent's engraving was a reproduction of an overdoor painting commissioned from François Boucher for the Hôtel de Soubise (today the home of the French National Archives) in Paris. Kaendler has recreated the original composition in three dimensions by isolating the two elements of the scene: the garland of flowers wrapped around the couple, and the jealous man spying on them.
