Jean-Baptiste Greuze painted many 'têtes d’expression', using
young boys and girls as models. He used these studio studies,
usually of head and shoulders, as inspiration for the figures in his
large genre paintings. This is one such preparatory portrait. These
paintings glorifying the grace of childhood can be compared with
those of Sir Joshua Reynolds.

The fair-haired young boy is dressed in Spanish-style with a
black velvet blouse and a ruff. He wears a wide-brimmed, black
felt hat with white feathers. Fragonard painted several portraits of
children in the same vein, with curly fair hair or a large
Musketeer's hat.
