J 41 Jean-Baptiste Greuze painted many 'têtes d’expression', using young boys and girls as models. He used these studio studies, usually of head and shoulders, as inspiration for the figures in his large genre paintings. This is one such preparatory portrait. These paintings glorifying the grace of childhood can be compared with those of Sir Joshua Reynolds.
