An Evening with Sophie Taillefer….. Le Music-Hall Français
It is with great pleasure that the Alliance announces the hosting of a French Cabaret Night on
Saturday, April 24 at 7:30 p.m., with doors opening at 7:00 p.m. The renowned mezzo-soprano,
Sophie Taillefer, will be performing French love songs for the evening, with her accompanist on
piano: Kalhil Gunther. You can expect to hear songs originally performed by Charles Aznavour,
Edith Piaf and Jacques Brel. Many of you may remember Ms. Taillefer from her successful cabaret
performance at the Alliance’s last cabaret in the spring of 2004. We are thrilled that she accepted
our invitation to return!
Sophie Taillefer is a mezzo-soprano originally from Montreal, who now resides in Bordentown NJ.
She came to the United States in 1998 with the invitation to study at the prestigious Academy of
Vocal Arts in Philadelphia. Since then, she has entertained audiences in many venues. Throughout
her professional career in Canada and the United States, Ms. Taillefer sang with several opera
companies, and made her Carnegie Hall debut in 2002 with the Pacific Opera. She also performed
her solo recital called La Belle Époque for many French Alliances including Charlottesville, Cleveland,
Buffalo, New Orleans and Philadelphia. She continues to share her love for French music all over
the United States and Canada.
Kalhil Gunther, Ms. Taillefer’s accompanist, is an artist whose background spans classical,
jazz, popular music and musical theater. He has played many engagements over the
years in the New Jersey and Philadelphia area, in addition to his work as a performer.
The Cabaret will be held at the 32nd Degree Masonic Temple in Cheektowaga, which is
easily located at 2379 Union Road. There is plenty of parking next to the building, and the hall we
have reserved boasts beautiful lighting and great acoustics. Doors will open at 7:00 p.m. to give
patrons an opportunity to relax and enjoy a menu of light fare and wine. The gourmet buffet and
wine bar will be available throughout the evening.
Cabaret tickets can be purchased at the door, but patrons are encouraged to reserve and
purchase them prior to the performance to secure a spot and to benefit from a discount. Send

A thank you to all!
I would like to thank all who responded to the question submitted to our
membership regarding their reasons for not attending some of our programs. Many of
you were pleased that the Board of Directors was making an effort to find out how we
can better serve your interests and concerns. Your reasons were varied and honest. To briefly summarize: You mentioned that work, time, family commitments prevented
you from attending events. The venues were a problem for many also. Several mentioned
that college campuses were not their favorite places – difficulty in parking, finding the
buildings, driving at night to a locale they are not familiar with, were all issues. I was
personally surprised to find out that a few of you would like to attend our events but
feel they must have a better knowledge of spoken french. I think we have failed as an
organization to make it known that there is rarely a program that requires a command
of french. Many of us bring spouses, guests who do not speak or understand french!
But we still have a good time! And having a good time at a reasonable cost was a
priority. Some mentioned that the Christmas dinner should be a little less expensive.
At a time when economics are a major concern, most of you would like to see
prices kept at an affordable level. It was pointed out that $80 for a couple for the
Christmas dinner and $350 per semester for our classes was too expensive. What do we like as a group? It seems that food and wine events are a draw! Remember
the chocolate program last year? Many of you did! And the pot luck at the Murrays, along with
the summer picnic? Get-togethers that were not expensive and fun seemed to top the list.
It was nice to have you suggest some activities that we may consider trying. One idea
was to have a french movie night (of course with English subtitles) and then have a bilingual
discussion and maybe a few drinks after the movie. Another was to try to establish a car-pool
to accommodate our members who do not like to drive at night and/or live a distance from
the venue hosting the event. There was a suggestion to locate events in different areas of the
suburbs. A good idea but finding the appropriate places to host our programs is no easy task.
I also appreciated those of you who wrote that you try to attend as many of our programs
as possible and enjoy them all! I have shared your comments with the Board and we will
work to host programs that you will enjoy. If anyone has any more suggestions, we would

Children and children-at-heart enjoyed
the Alliance Francaise’s annual Goûter de
Noël on Saturday, December 5. Children enjoyed crafts and a visit from our own Père
Noël, graciously played by Pierre Ringenbach.
Adults enjoyed singing French carols and our
annual bûche de Noël cake competition. The
winner this year, pictured here with her family,
was Rosanne Van Oss. Canisius College was

Canisius College will present a Francophone Film Festival from Tuesday, March 16 to Sunday, March 28. The event is free and open to the public.
All films will be in French with English subtitles. Discussions will follow each screening.
Indigènes (2006) on Tuesday, March 16 at 2:00 p.m. in the Regis
Room of the Richard E. Winter ’42 Student Center and 7:00 p.m. in
the Montante Cultural Center. Set in World War II, volunteer soldiers
from French colonies in North Africa fight the Nazis to liberate France.
Indigènes follows the story of these men and how they stand up for
themselves in the face of racism from the “French” troops during and
after the war up to the present day.
Un secret (2007) on Thursday, March 18 at 2:00 p.m. in the Regis
Room. A post-World War II romance about a young boy who dreams
of a brother that he never had until a deep hidden secret forces itself
into the perfect family’s life.
Eldorado (2008) on Sunday, March 21 at 7:00 p.m. in the Montante
Cultural Center. An unlikely duo forms when a heroin addict and
burglar named Ellie and an unsuspecting homeowner, Yvan, head out
on a road trip to bring Elie back to her parents. Eldorado plays on the
roles of gender in a funny and enlightening way.
Entre les murs/The Class (2008) on Friday, March 26 at 2:00 p.m.
in the Regis Room and 7:00 p.m. in the Montante Cultural Center. The
Class is based on a book by real-life teacher François Bégaudeau, who
taught students French in an impoverished Parisian area. François

encourages students to blend into the French way of life and culture,
which sparks cultural diversity issues.
Roman de gare (2008) on Sunday, March 28 at 2:00 p.m. in the
Regis Room and 7:00 p.m. in the Montante Cultural Center. The story
of Judith Ralitzer, a successful crime novelist in search of inspiration
for her next bestseller. A series of seemingly unconnected events,
including murder, duplicity, romance and revenge, create a thriller that
will keep viewers on the edges of their seats.
The Francophone Film Festival is made possible by a 2009-2010
Tournées Film Festival Grant and by the co-sponsorship of the
departments of Modern Languages, English and Communication
Studies, as well as the Women’s Studies Program. The Tournées
Festival, a program of the French American Cultural Exchange
(FACE), is sponsored by the Cultural Services of the French
Embassy, the French Ministry of Culture (CNC), the FrancoAmerican Cultural Fund, the Grand Marnier Foundation, the
Florence Gould Foundation, highbrow entertainment and agnès b.

December 2009 Holiday Dinner
In an opulently decorated banquet hall at Salvatore’s Italian Gardens, some 64 members of the
Alliance Française and their family and friends gathered for the annual holiday dinner on a wintry
Sunday, December 6th. While outside the snow was falling and the temperatures were dipping,
the atmosphere in the restaurant was warm and elegant. Salvatore’s decorates extravagantly for
the holidays, and a quick tour of the restaurant would have put anyone in a festive mood given the
whimsical Christmas scenes displayed, and the ornaments and twinkling lights everywhere. We
had a lovely two level hall at our disposal which conveniently gave us a comfortable space to enjoy
cocktails and savory appetizers, and then a lower room to which we retreated for dinner, where we
were served a two course meal topped off with a delicious cheesecake with raspberry sauce.
The dinner tables were beautifully appointed at each place setting with white votive candles
encircled with a band holding a small red silk poinsettia. These were generously crafted by
Alessandra Cassini, who, each year, serves as the gracious coordinator of this
event. We also enjoyed the live music of Buffalo State College professor Andrea
Guiati, also known as the “singing professor,” who kindly volunteered to serenade
us with Italian and French songs while we mingled during cocktails and had our first
course. Sophie Feal’s daughter, Emilia, and Alessandra’s partner, Ken, volunteered
at the reception table, selling raffle tickets and distributing the names of famous
people whose identities we were each to assume while other dinner guests asked
pointed questions in an attempt to guess our covert identity. Among us there was
Molière, Audrey Hepburn, Christopher Columbus, Jeanne d’Arc and James Bond.
The prize for a successful guess was a bottle of Marianne’s homemade tarragon
wine vinegar.
The highlight of the annual dinner for the past several years, of course, has been
the auction and raffle. There were numerous items to bid on, including abundant
baskets filled with goodies for those who love cheese, wine or beer; a photograph
of Paris and its Eiffel Tower donated by one of AFB President Patricia Schiavone’s talented students;
Pilates lessons, a Gucci watch and a Limoges plate. In the raffle, lucky winners received gift certificates,
a variety of gift baskets, and even some luggage. Thérèse Gay and Steve Curvin were repeat winners
that night, and Anne Marie Bruschi-Skop won the grand prize—a week stay at a condominium in
Paris this summer—generously donated by Dr. and Mrs. Eluard. Indeed all of the raffle and auction
items are either donated by or gathered by AFB members from local merchants, and the holiday
dinner is an important source of fundraising.
For those members who were unable to join us this year, I urge you to come next year and not again
miss this very pleasant celebration surrounded by charming company. - Sophie Feal
Théâtre français de Toronto
I am exploring the possibility of organizing an excursion to Toronto, to view a French play with
English surtitles, Fragments of unnecessary lies. Please consult the web-site for additional

to Paul Carroll who was the organizer of such successful trips for many years in the past.
When? Sunday May 15th, 10:00 a.m. departure
Cost? $ 58.00 and $ 53.00 for students and seniors
The cost includes the theater ticket and care free transportation to our destination. It does NOT
include dinner. After the play we will proceed to Le Select Bistro where you will be able to
choose from a wide variety of French specialties, for your dinner. Before the play participants
will be dropped off in a central location around Bloor St.
A minimum of 12 participants are a must to make the trip a “go”. I must receive your
reservation with your payment by the close of the business day on Monday, March 15th
at the latest to reserve the theatre seats. If I do not have the minimum of participants
by the due date, the trip will be cancelled and all participants fully refunded.

A new opportunity to hear
Buffalo Philharmonic cellist, Amélie Fradette
In November of 2008 the AFB co-sponsored a wonderful all-French program performed by the beautiful
French Canadian Cellist, in the Performing Arts Center of Rockwell Hall at Buffalo State College. In addition to
her BPO commitment, Amélie has joined the string faculty of the music department at the college, under the
directorship of Dr. Bradley Fuster.
She will perform on Thursday, March 4th, 2010, at 7:00 p.m, at the Burchfield Penney Arts Center!

For the concert entitled: “An Eastern European Journey”, Amélie will be accompanied by Amy Glidden
on violin and Bryan Boyce on piano. The program will include the Sonata in C Major, opus 119 for cello and
piano by S. Prokofiev, the Hungarian Rhapsody opus 68 for cello and piano, by D.Popper, a Duo opus 7
for violin and cello by Z. Kodaly, and Six Romanian Folk dances by B.Bartok.
The concert is free of charge and open to the public in the auditorium of the new Burchfield Penney Art
Center Museum, but since the museum is open till 9:00 p.m. on Thursday evenings, patrons will be expected
to pay the museum admission fee: Free admission to Museum members, Buffalo State Staff, Faculty and
Students with ID; $ 9 admission, adults; $ 6 admission, 62 year olds and over with ID; $ 5 admission, students
with ID
If you are not familiar with the museum, (the first “green” museum in New York State) or even if you are, I
suggest you make an early evening plan and enjoy a quick spin in the museum before the performance. There

Décès de Madame Diezeraad
L’Alliance française de Buffalo a le regret d’annoncer le décès de
Madame Kim Diezeraad. Madame Diezeraad est morte paisiblement
le 14 janvier 2010, à Clarence, chez les Brothers of Mercy où elle
séjournait depuis que son coeur s’était affaibli, il y a près d’un an.
Kim était née en Indonésie, non loin de Jakarta, le 8 mars 1920,
de parents d’origine chinoise. Elle a souvent évoqué, pour Jay et pour
moi, son enfance indonésienne, en particulier ses séjours dans les
montagnes de l’île au moment des grosses chaleurs et ses galopades
avec une ribambelle de cousins. Sa rencontre avec son mari était
aussi un de ses souvenirs les plus chers. Elle était allée chercher un
document au bureau de la police; le chef de police ayant remarqué
cette belle jeune fille, avait couru demander sa main à ses parents.
Après la guerre de 1939 et les épreuves que l’occupation japonaise
avait imposées aux habitants d’Indonésie, Kim et son mari ont émigré
en Hollande. Là, elle a mis ses diplômes à profit pour travailler dans
une pharmacie. Le couple est arrivé aux États-Unis dans les années
70. Après un séjour en Californie, ils se sont installés dans notre région.
Kim a longtemps été technicienne dans les laboratoires de l’Hôpital
des anciens combattants de Buffalo. Devenue veuve, elle est restée
dans la petite maison de Clarence Center Road à laquelle elle était
profondément attachée.
Kim était une francophile enthousiaste. Elle avait étudié le français
dès l’école primaire, suivi des cours en France et pris des leçons
particulières avec Madame Rosine Van Oss « pendant trente ans »,
puis avec moi jusqu’à ce que sa santé l’en empêche. Elle était membre
de l’Alliance depuis de nombreuses années et la France restait, avec
la Hollande, la destination préférée de cette grande voyageuse. Son
goût pour la cuisine française allait de pair avec les recettes chinoises
et les gâteaux hollandais.
Les ami(e)s de Madame Diezeraad sont convié(e)s à une réunion
à sa mémoire. Nous attendrons que Nathalie Swoboda, qui a aidé Kim
avec une patience et une affection sans pareilles, soit de retour d’un
voyage en Corse. La réunion aura donc lieu, chez moi, à Clarence, au
5483 Shimerville Road, 14031, le vendredi 16 avril 2010, à 17 heures.

Pour le mois d’avril (28 avril), Geneviève répond à la
requête d’une membre, de lire (relire) Le petit prince
d’Antoine de St-Exupéry. Un texte/fable encore très
moderne qui peut se lire à plusieurs niveaux... un
court texte facile à se procurer.
De retour à Buffalo en mars, Geneviève sera l’hôtesse
pour ces deux réunions, comme d’habitude quand
elle n’est pas absente de Buffalo.

Deux petits contes de Michel Tournier ont animé la discussion parmi
les participants du groupe de lecture le 18 novembre.
L’auteur attire l’attention de son auditoire avec un style peu
compliqué et un langage facilement entendu. Dès le début, chaque récit
présente une situation qui se déroule dans des scènes bien détaillées. Celles-ci soutiennent
la curiosité du lecteur jusqu’au dénouement — un trajet énormément satisfaisant selon
l’accord général du groupe. (Il y avait onze membres présents)
Théobald ou le crime parfait et Les mousserons de la Toussaint (les histoires choisies) font
partie d’une collection intitulée Le médianoche amoureux.
Le crime parfait, oh-la-la! La menace que peut constituer une femme voluptueuse,
ambitieuse, rusée, et de plus, adultère. Mais attention! La solution n’est pas aussi simple
que ça. Il y a deux hommes virés de leur poste, un mari cocu, et une lettre oubliée dans un
tiroir. On doit suivre les pistes!
Un homme d’affaires prospère sort de son hôtel particulier pour suivre la route de Paris
à Bligny-sur-Ouche à la recherche des mousserons dont il se souvient de sa jeunesse.
C’est l’automne. Voici d’où vient le titre, Les mousserons de la Toussaint. L’homme retrouve
son vieux copain qui n’a pas quitté le village où il est né. Pas de crime ici. Plutôt, il s’agit de
la nostalgie, de l’ambition, et d’une vie simple de campagne. Cette histoire est plus longue
que l’autre parce qu’elle inclut plus de scènes et du vocabulaire descriptif. On y trouve
beaucoup de mots de la nature. Même si on connaît très bien le français, il faut avoir proche
un dictionnaire pour chercher les paroles peu communes, ex. les mousserons.Tout en lisant
ce récit, cette phrase vient à l’esprit : l’argent n’achète pas tout.
Grâce à l’amabilité de l’hôtesse, tout le monde a savouré des amuse-gueule pendant
