Dear Colleagues,
Welcome to Ontario Library Service – North’s conference “Libraries, Culture and Community”. We are excited
to celebrate September’s Culture Days with a conference which highlights the important role libraries play in the
preservation and development of culture in their communities. The conference will be held on September 23-25
at the Radisson Hotel in Sudbury.
A JASI training and information day will be held on September 22. Details of this session will follow at a later
date.
You will note that the conference program is different this year as it is being supplied to you only via the website.
There have been significant changes to the subsidies offered for the conference. Please read the registration
section carefully to ensure that you understand what OLS - North will pay and what your library will need to pay.
To ensure a room at the hotel please book your room no later than August 20, 2014.
In addition we are pleased to have John Pateman, CEO of Thunder Bay Public Library join us as a keynote
speaker. On Wednesday, we invite you to participate in the Knowledge Circuit. This provides a series of
interactive sessions which you can visit during one programming time slot.
A thank-you goes to the Conference and Training CSI Committee, and the OLS - North staff in the development
of another creative conference program. I look forward to spending time with all of you this fall.

Bienvenue au congrès du Service des bibliothèques de l’Ontario - Nord, qui se tient sous le thème
« Bibliothèques, culture et communauté ». Nous sommes enchantés de souligner la Fête de la culture, qui a
également lieu en septembre, en mettant l’accent sur le rôle important que jouent les bibliothèques dans la
préservation et le développement de la culture à l’échelle locale. Le congrès aura lieu du 23 au 25 septembre à
l’hôtel Radisson de Sudbury.
La journée du 22 septembre sera consacrée à un atelier de formation et d’information sur le système JASI. Nous
vous enverrons plus d’information à ce sujet en temps et lieu.
Nouveauté cette année, la trousse d’inscription se trouve uniquement sur le site Web. Nous avons apporté
des modifications importantes au régime de subventions. Veuillez lire attentivement la documentation afin de
comprendre quels coûts seront payés par le SBO - Nord et quels coûts seront à la charge de votre bibliothèque.
Afin de garantir votre chambre d’hôtel, veuillez faire votre réservation au plus tard le 20 août 2014.
Par ailleurs, nous sommes heureux d’accueillir John Pateman, le directeur général de la Bibliothèque publique
de Thunder Bay, en tant que conférencier. Le mercredi, vous êtes invités à visiter la Zone des découvertes, où
vous trouverez plusieurs activités interactives. Vous pourrez y faire un tour pendant la période réservée à la
programmation.

Conference Registration in Four Easy Steps
Step 1:

To book your accommodations at the conference hotel, please visit : www.radisson.com/ontlibrary If you do not have a credit card to reserve online, please call the Radisson Hotel toll free at
1-800-333-3333 and reference “Ontario Library Service - North Conference”
Step 4:
If you are not the subsidized delegate, we will invoice your library as soon as your registration is received. Send your payment to OLS - North.
If you are the subsidized delegate, we will confirm with the conference hotel that your room has been booked. No invoice will be sent for September 23 or 24.
OLS - North must receive your registration fee (if applicable) prior to the conference in order to confirm your
registration.
Subsidies
OLS - North offers subsidies based on active participation at the conference which may be withdrawn should
the delegate not attend sessions. OLS - North subsidizes the following for one delegate per client library:
Conference Fees
• The fee will be waived if the delegate stays at the conference hotel and attends the entire conference.
Travel
• Mileage for one vehicle travelling from the client library to Sudbury or
• Flights from the airport nearest the client library to Sudbury (from Northwestern Ontario)
Accommodations
• Payment arrangements for pre-approved additional nights of accommodation will be made with
OLS - North staff.
Delegates are responsible for booking and paying for their own hotel rooms at the conference hotel.
Room rates start at $108/night plus taxes for single occupancy. The hotel will use OLS - North’s account
to guarantee any room for delegates who do not have credit cards.
These delegates must pay the balance on checkout.
Late Arrivals and Cancellations
If you are arriving late or if you cancel your attendance at the conference, please contact OLS - North to
let them know. Please note that OLS - North will charge the client library for any costs that arise from
cancellations or late arrivals. Delegates are responsible for cancelling or changing their accomodations directly
with the conference hotel, as required.

avant le début du congrès.
Subventions
La subvention offerte par le SBO - Nord est conditionnelle à la participation active du délégué au congrès. Le SBO
- Nord se réserve le droit de retirer la subvention en cas d’absence d’un délégué. La subvention est accordée pour
un délégué par bibliothèque cliente, selon les modalités suivantes :
Frais d’inscription au congrès
• Les frais seront annulés si le délégué séjourne à l’hôtel du congrès et participe à tout le congrès.
Frais de déplacement
• Indemnité de kilométrage pour un véhicule selon la distance entre la bibliothèque cliente
et Sudbury; ou
• Dans le cas des bibliothèques du Nord-Ouest de l’Ontario, vol entre l’aéroport le plus
près de la bibliothèque cliente et Sudbury.
Hébergement
• Si nécessaire, les modalités de paiement seront fait avec le personnel du SBO – Nord pour les nuits supplémentaires d’hébergement pré-approuvées.
Les délégués sont responsables de la réservation et le paiement de leurs chambres à l’hôtel du congrès. Le

library services based on community needs. John Pateman
advocates a shift in our thinking, moving from customer service
to relationships, from outputs to outcomes, and a great deal more.
Following this keynote speech, librarians will engage in a thoughtful

Learn how to use Microsoft Excel spreadsheets to

INFO’s upgrade to VDX version 7.3 early in 2014
dropped a couple of new features into the ILL kit
bag. Beyond that, Interlibrary Loan staff in libraries
do not all have the same comfort level with some VDX
procedures that have been around for a long time. Why
are requests ending up in Idle in the Work Queue? What
is the difference between Cancel and Terminate? There
must be an easier way to request Book Club titles. When
should you complete some of the requests languishing in
your work queue? What is the best thing to do with those
pesky End of Rota, Not Supplied requests? This session
will have demonstrations as well as time for Q&A
and participant sharing of their interlibrary loan tricks.
Suitable for staff that are nearly new to VDX up to long
time VDX operators that feel they could become more
efficient.

Welcome to your first Ontario Library Service – North Conference!
Consider signing up for mentoring with one of our experienced librarians from across the North.
Learn from the experiences of seasoned librarians and get to know OLS – North staff. Please
indicate on the registration form your intent to participate at the New Librarians’ Lunch, where you
will meet our mentors and participate in an engaging panel discussion. For new librarians, this event
is a great introduction to the northern public library community and our conference. OLS – North
staff will contact new librarians and mentors before the conference.

Faites-vous vos premiers pas en tant que bibliothécaire?
Bienvenue à votre premier congrès du Service des bibliothèques de l’Ontario - Nord!
Vous avez la possibilité de recevoir du mentorat de la part d’un bibliothécaire ou d’une
bibliothécaire du Nord qui possède plusieurs années d’expérience. Vous pourrez profiter du savoir
de votre mentor et faire connaissance par la même occasion avec l’équipe du SBO - Nord. Veuillez
indiquer sur votre formulaire d’inscription si vous souhaitez participer au dîner des nouveaux
bibliothécaires. À cette occasion, vous rencontrerez l’équipe de mentors et pourrez discuter avec
les membres dynamiques du panel. Il s’agit d’une belle introduction au congrès et au milieu
des bibliothèques dans le Nord de l’Ontario. Le SBO - Nord communiquera avec les nouveaux
bibliothécaires et les mentors avant le congrès.

Mentors are librarians with five or more
years’ experience who are willing to share
their experience with new librarians. If
you are already a mentor or are interested
in mentoring, please register for the new
librarians’ lunch. OLS - North will contact
interested librarians before the conference.
Le mentor idéal possède au moins cinq années
d’expérience dans le domaine des bibliothèques et
est prêt à partager son expérience avec un nouveau
bibliothécaire. Si vous êtes déjà mentor ou si

At the conference, we will clearly indicate when a session

OLS - North staff before the start of the session.
