Dear Colleagues,
It is our great pleasure to welcome you to Ontario Library Service – North’s conference for September
22-24, 2015 at the Radisson Hotel in Sudbury.
The theme, Libraries Working Together, has never been more important than now as we are living
in the age of interconnectedness. Libraries offer access to a world of knowledge whether through the
internet, community programming, or even 3D printers.
In the past, people worked together just to survive. Now we work together to thrive. As evidence of
greater cooperation and reciprocity, this year has seen not just an improved and expanded JASI service
but also a province-wide library symposium. Now, more than ever, libraries can bridge the geographic,
linguistic, and cultural distances in so many ways. My thanks to all of you for supporting each other
at this conference, to our staff and board members for their hard work, and to the Ministry of Tourism,
Culture and Sport for making all of this possible.

C’est avec grand plaisir que le Service des bibliothèques de l’Ontario - Nord vous accueillera au congrès
annuel qui aura lieu du 22 au 24 septembre 2015 à l’hôtel Radisson de Sudbury.
Le thème de cette année, Bibliothèques, unissons les forces, tombe vraiment à point nommé. Nous
vivons à l’ère de l’interconnectivité. Les bibliothèques donnent accès à un univers de connaissances,
qu’il s’agisse d’Internet, de programmes communautaires ou même d’imprimantes en trois dimensions.
Nos ancêtres devaient unir leurs forces simplement pour survivre. Aujourd’hui, la collaboration est
plutôt une source d’épanouissement. Les exemples de concertation et de réciprocité sont nombreux.
Cette année, nous avons apporté des améliorations au service JASI et élargi sa portée. Nous avons
aussi mis sur pied un symposium pour l’ensemble des bibliothèques de la province. Plus que jamais,
les bibliothèques peuvent surmonter les distances géographiques et les écarts linguistiques et culturels.
Ce congrès sera une autre occasion de renforcer les liens qui nous unissent. Merci aux employés et aux
administrateurs du SBO - Nord qui consacrent beaucoup d’énergie à la préparation du congrès, et merci
au ministère du Tourisme, de la Culture et du Sport de son appui précieux à notre événement.

will meet our mentors and participate in an engaging panel discussion. For new librarians, this event
is a great introduction to the northern public library community and our conference. OLS – North

Kanata is the original name for Canada, a place that has been host
to thousands of years of writing, expression, and literature found in
song and story authored on the land, on hide and birchbark, and on
paper – a virtual library around us. This is what Kanata means - a
“village” - a place where the riches are found in relationship building
structures and expressions. This embodied in Indigenous stories, the
foundation of “Canadian literature.” A foray into this wide canon particularly in the non-alphabetical expressions Indigenous ancestors
have left for us - reveals rich histories and knowledge into the
diverse ways Indigenous intellectuals have perceived, expressed, and
recorded their own and their community’s experiences and stories.
Come take a trip through time, learning how to read the history of
criticism and creativity in the world that surrounds us today.
Avant d’être le Canada, notre pays se nommait « Kanata » en
langue autochtone. Au fil des millénaires, l’histoire du pays a
été écrite et exprimée en chansons, en expressions et en histoires
autochtones, tracées sur la terre, le cuir, l’écorce et le papier : une
bibliothèque virtuelle. C’est le sens du mot « Kanata » — un village,
un endroit dont la richesse se trouve dans les relations humaines et
les expressions qui les structurent. Les histoires autochtones sont
l’origine profonde de la littérature canadienne. Une incursion dans ce
vaste domaine, et particulièrement en ce qui a trait aux expressions
non alphabétiques de nos ancêtres autochtones, dévoile une grande
richesse d’histoires et ouvre une fenêtre sur les nombreuses façons
dont les intellectuels autochtones ont perçu, exprimé et consigné
leurs expériences et celles de leur communauté. Remontez dans
le temps et apprenez à décoder le point de vue critique et la vision
créative des Autochtones au sujet du monde qui nous entoure.

Graphic writing is the oldest form of written expression
in North America, having been used by Indigenous people
through rock paintings, petroforms, beadwork, and other
forms to communicate. Over the past few decades, many
Indigenous storytellers have turned to graphic novels to
continue long-standing cultural and intellectual traditions,
combining traditional aesthetics with contemporary
experiences. These have combatted longstanding
historical representations of Aboriginal people as foils,
heroes, and sidekicks for their western counterparts and
reflected the cacophony of creativity amongst Indigenous
cultures and communities. Come and gain a variety of
techniques that will enable you to critique graphic novels
both about and by Indigenous artists while meeting some
of the artists and writers producing the most cutting edge
work today. Learn how libraries can help library patrons with
difficulty reading print access the alternative format
collections (both online and physical formats) available
through CELA. A discussion of experiences, successes
and challenges of expanding library services for patrons
with print disabilities in Northern Ontario libraries.

Conference Registration in Four Easy Steps
Step 1:
Please read the online registration form carefully at www.olsn.ca/conference
Step 2:
Complete the sections that apply to you.
Step 3:
Book your accommodations.
To book your accommodations at the conference hotel, please call the Radisson Hotel toll free at
1-800-333-3333 and reference block code “0915ONLIB”.
Step 4:
If you are not the subsidized delegate, we will invoice your library as soon as your registration is received. Send your payment to OLS - North.
If you are the subsidized delegate, we will confirm with the conference hotel that your room has been booked.
OLS - North must receive your registration fee (if applicable) prior to the conference in order to confirm your
registration.
Subsidies
OLS - North offers subsidies based on active participation at the conference which may be withdrawn should
the delegate not attend sessions. OLS - North subsidizes the following for one delegate per client library:
Conference Fees
• The fee will be waived if the delegate stays at the conference hotel and attends the entire conference.
Travel
• Mileage for one vehicle travelling from the client library to Sudbury or
• Flights from the airport nearest the client library to Sudbury (from Northwestern Ontario)
Accommodations
• Payment arrangements for pre-approved additional nights of accommodation will be made with
OLS - North staff.
Delegates are responsible for booking and paying for their own hotel rooms at the conference hotel.
Room rates start at $109/night plus taxes for single occupancy. The hotel will use OLS - North’s account
to guarantee any room for delegates who do not have credit cards.
These delegates must pay the balance on checkout.
Late Arrivals and Cancellations
If you are arriving late or if you cancel your attendance at the conference, please contact OLS - North to
let them know. Please note that OLS - North will charge the client library for any costs that arise from
cancellations or late arrivals. Delegates are responsible for cancelling or changing their accomodations directly
with the conference hotel, as required.

Étape 4 : Si vous n’êtes pas le délégué subventionné, nous vous ferons parvenir une facture à la réception de votre inscription. Envoyez votre paiement au SBO – Nord.
Si vous êtes le délégué subventionné, nous confirmerons votre réservation avec l’hôtel du congrès. Afin de confirmer votre inscription, le SBO - Nord doit recevoir le paiement des frais d’inscription (si pertinents)
avant le début du congrès.
Subventions
La subvention offerte par le SBO - Nord est conditionnelle à la participation active du délégué au congrès. Le SBO
- Nord se réserve le droit de retirer la subvention en cas d’absence d’un délégué. La subvention est accordée pour
un délégué par bibliothèque cliente, selon les modalités suivantes :
Frais d’inscription au congrès
• Les frais seront annulés si le délégué séjourne à l’hôtel du congrès et participe à tout le congrès.
Frais de déplacement
• Indemnité de kilométrage pour un véhicule selon la distance entre la bibliothèque cliente
et Sudbury; ou
• Dans le cas des bibliothèques du Nord-Ouest de l’Ontario, vol entre l’aéroport le plus
près de la bibliothèque cliente et Sudbury.
Hébergement
• Si nécessaire, les modalités de paiement seront fait avec le personnel du SBO – Nord pour les nuits supplémentaires d’hébergement pré-approuvées.
Les délégués sont responsables de la réservation et le paiement de leurs chambres à l’hôtel du congrès. Le
tarif commence à 109 $ / nuitée, taxes en sus, pour occupation simple.
L’hôtel va utiliser le compte du SBO - Nord pour garantir une place pour les délégués qui n’ont pas de carte

Retards et annulations
Les clients qui arrivent en retard au congrès ou qui doivent annuler leur participation sont priés d’en informer le
SBO - Nord. Les bibliothèques clientes seront responsables de tout coût découlant d’une annulation ou d’un retard.
Les délégués doivent communiquer directement avec l’hôtel du congrès tout changement à leur hébergement.
