Dear Colleagues,
Welcome to Ontario Library Service - North’s conference for September 24-26, 2013. This year
we are excited to present an array of workshops and sessions on topics as diverse as programming for
teens and municipal politics all under the theme of Building Libraries for a Digital Future.
In her report Third Generation Public Libraries, Wendy Newman quotes Shannon Mattern,
Associate Professor of Culture and Communication at New York University: “Public libraries of the
future will be catalysts and leaders in community-based economic development. They will have a
strategic role in knowledge-intensive industries like digital media.” Over these three eventful days, we
will explore new tools and technology that will keep our libraries in the forefront of the knowledge
economy.
By networking with other librarians, learning about the issues and challenges that we face, you
are all helping to build that bright digital future for all our communities in the North.
I would like to thank you for joining us and also thank OLS - North’s staff and Board of
Directors for all of their time, creativity, and dedication that make events like this possible.

Bienvenue au congrès du Service des bibliothèques de l’Ontario - Nord, qui se tiendra du 24
au 26 septembre 2013. Nous sommes enchantés de vous proposer cette année un éventail d’ateliers
et de présentations sur des sujets aussi variés que la programmation pour adolescents et la politique
municipale, tous chapeautés par le thème Bâtir l’avenir numérique de nos bibliothèques.
Dans son rapport intitulé Bibliothèques publiques de troisième génération, Wendy Newman
cite Shannon Mattern, professeure adjointe, Culture et Communication, Université de New York :
« Les bibliothèques publiques de l’avenir seront des catalyseurs et des chefs de file du développement
économique à l’échelon des collectivités. Elles joueront un rôle stratégique dans des industries du
savoir comme les médias numériques. » Au cours des trois journées bien chargées du congrès, nous
explorerons les outils et les technologies qui garderont nos bibliothèques à l’avant-plan de l’économie
du savoir.
Je vous invite à faire du réseautage avec vos collègues et à discuter des enjeux et des défis
communs. Ensemble, nous bâtirons un avenir numérique prometteur pour toutes nos communautés du
Nord.

Conference Registration in Three Easy Steps
Step 1:
Please read the online registration form carefully at www.olsn.ca/conference.
Step 2:
Complete the sections that apply to you.
Step 3: Send payment to OLS - North. We will invoice your library as soon as your registration is
received.
OLS - North must receive your registration fee prior to the conference in order to confirm your
registration.
Subsidies
OLS - North offers subsidies based on active participation at the conference and may be withdrawn
should the delegate not attend sessions. OLS - North subsidizes the following for one delegate per client
library:
Travel
• Mileage for one vehicle travelling from the client library to Sudbury or
• Flights from the airport nearest the client library to Sudbury (from Northwestern Ontario)
Conference Fees
• Conference fee for one delegate per client library
Accommodations
• Two nights’ accommodation based on double occupancy for those subsidized delegates
whose library is more than 50 kms from Sudbury or
• One half of the hotel room cost for subsidized delegates opting for a single room plus
• Additional nights of accommodation if pre-approved due to airline schedules.
Delegates who choose to stay more nights will be charged the full price for those nights. Delegates who
are not subsidized will be charged the full room rates for single occupancy ($108.00/night) or half the
rate for double occupancy ($54.00/night) with another delegate.
Late Arrivals and Cancellations
If you are arriving late or if you cancel your attendance at the conference, please contact OLS-North to
let them know. Please note that OLS - North will charge the client library for any costs that arise from
cancellations or late arrivals.

Inscription au congrès en trois étapes faciles
Étape 1 : Lisez attentivement le formulaire d’inscription en ligne sur le site www.olsn.ca/conference.
Étape 2 : Remplissez les sections du formulaire qui s’appliquent à vous.
Étape 3 : Envoyez votre paiement au SBO - Nord. Nous vous ferons parvenir une facture à la réception
de votre inscription.
Afin de confirmer votre inscription, le SBO - Nord doit recevoir le paiement des frais d’inscription avant le
début du congrès.
Subventions
La subvention offerte par le SBO - Nord est conditionnelle à la participation active du délégué au congrès.
Le SBO - Nord se réserve le droit de retirer la subvention en cas d’absence d’un délégué. La subvention est
accordée pour un délégué par bibliothèque cliente, selon les modalités suivantes :
Frais de déplacement
• Indemnité de kilométrage pour un véhicule selon la distance entre la bibliothèque cliente
et Sudbury; ou
• Dans le cas des bibliothèques du Nord-Ouest de l’Ontario, vol entre l’aéroport le plus
près de la bibliothèque cliente et Sudbury.
Frais de participation au congrès
• Frais de participation pour un délégué par bibliothèque cliente
Hébergement
• Deux nuitées en occupation double pour les délégués subventionnés dont la bibliothèque
se trouve à plus de 50 km de Sudbury; ou
• La moitié du coût de l’hébergement pour les délégués subventionnés qui optent pour une chambre en occupation simple.
• Le SBO - Nord autorisera à l’avance des nuitées d’hébergement supplémentaire si cela
est nécessaire à cause de l’horaire des vols.
Les délégués qui souhaitent prolonger leur séjour devront payer le plein tarif d’hébergement pour ces nuitées
supplémentaires. Les délégués non subventionnés devront payer le plein tarif en occupation simple (108 $),
ou la moitié du tarif en occupation double (54 $).
Retards et annulations
Les clients qui arrivent en retard au congrès ou qui doivent annuler leur participation sont priés d’en
informer le SBO - Nord. Les bibliothèques clientes seront responsables de tout coût découlant d’une
annulation ou d’un retard.

Are you a new librarian?
New librarian? Welcome to your first Ontario Library Service – North Conference!
The opportunities to learn and network don’t stop at this session. Join in and be paired up with
long standing members of the Northern Ontario library community. Sign up for mentoring with
experienced library staff from across the north. OLS - North Staff will be contacting new
librarians and mentors before the conference. Please indicate in your registration your intent to
participate. Learn from the examples and experiences of seasoned librarians and get to know the
OLS - North staff, as you become more and more comfortable in your roles and responsibilities
as new CEOs. Don’t hesitate to bring questions, themes or issues you find particularly
challenging in your new duties to the table. This will be the first of many opportunities you will
have to become an active participant in the Northern Ontario Library community.

Bienvenue à votre premier congrès du Service des bibliothèques de l’Ontario - Nord!
Ce n’est pas tout. Nous vous proposons plusieurs autres activités d’apprentissage et occasions de
réseautage professionnel. Vous pourrez être jumelé à un bibliothécaire chevronné prêt à vous
offrir du mentorat et à vous faire profiter de son expérience dans le milieu des bibliothèques du
Nord de l’Ontario. Le personnel du SBO - Nord communiquera avec les nouveaux
bibliothécaires et les mentors avant le congrès. Si vous souhaitez participer à cette activité,
veuillez l’indiquer dans votre formulaire d’inscription. Les bibliothécaires expérimentés seront
heureux de vous parler de leurs expériences et de vous donner des exemples concrets. De
plus, les personnes qui ont récemment accédé à un poste de direction générale pourront
faire connaissance avec l’équipe du SBO - Nord et se familiariser avec leurs nouveaux rôles et responsabilités. N’hésitez pas à poser des questions ou à discuter de thèmes ou d’enjeux que
vous trouvez particulièrement problématiques. Il s’agira d’une première occasion de vous
impliquer à fond dans la collectivité des bibliothèques du Nord de l’Ontario.
N’oubliez pas de vos inscrire pour le dîner pour nouveaux et nouvelles bibliothécaires.
