Message from the President
The word means “a
mark of acknowledgment,” “an expression of
praise.” I don’t think there is a better name for the
Foundation’s newsletter, whose very purpose is to
recognize our patrons and celebrate the accomplishments your generosity makes possible. I am
delighted that we are now able to convey our appreciation of your support so clearly right on our
cover page.
The year 2009 promises to be rich in enduring
friendships, new beginnings, and inspiring endeavours.
It started with the announcement of the acquisition of Theatre of Cruelty, an immersive art installation by internationally renowned Canadian artist
Geoffrey Farmer, through the generous support of
the NGC Foundation’s Audain Endowment for
Contemporary Canadian Art. This is the second
acquisition made possible by this Endowment. In
2006, it supported the acquisition of People’s Flag
by Canadian artist Brian Jungen.
Looking forward, I am very pleased to announce that Sun Life Financial will be returning to
the National Gallery once again, this time as the
presenting sponsor of the extraordinary summer
exhibition From Raphael to Annibale Carracci: The
Art of Papal Rome. In 2007, Sun Life presented
Renoir Landscapes and, in 2006, Emily Carr. New
Perspectives.
I am also happy to welcome a new corporate
partner to our family. As you will read elsewhere
in this issue, TELUS is bringing its support to
Artissimo, one of the Gallery’s flagship programs
for children and their families.
We are immensely grateful to Sun Life and
TELUS for their generous support.
On a different note, it is with great enthusiasm
that we welcome the new Director of the National
Gallery, Mr. Marc Mayer. A man with vision, experience, and energy, he will take the National
Gallery to a whole new level. We very much look
forward to working with him to that end.
In closing, I invite you to read our inspiring
story on making an enduring difference to the
Gallery’s endeavours that are dearest to one’s
heart, as did teacher and art patron Evelyn
McAndrew. In these difficult economic times, the
story also could not be any timelier.

A Reunification Not To Be Missed
Thanks to the generous support of our Members, Supporting Friends, and
Donors, the National Gallery was able to carry out the restoration of Dead
Christ Supported by Angels, the NGC fragment of Paolo Veronese’s 16th century
masterpiece, the Petrobelli Altarpiece. Also thanks to their support, the Gallery
will present the Altarpiece this summer. Reunified for the exhibition Paolo
Veronese and the Petrobelli Altarpiece, it will be on view from May 29 to
September 6. Be sure to come and see this rare exhibition.

Une réunification à ne
pas manquer
Grâce au généreux appui de nos Membres, Amis Donateurs et
Mécènes, le Musée a pu réaliser la restauration du Christ mort
soutenu par les anges, fragment du MBAC d’un chef d’œuvre du
16e siècle par Paolo Véronèse, le retable Petrobelli. Aussi grâce
à cet appui, le Musée présentera cet été le retable, réunifié pour
l’exposition Paolo Véronèse et le retable Petrobelli, à l’affiche du 29
mai au 6 septembre. Inscrivez ces dates à votre calendrier, car
cette rare exposition est à ne pas manquer.

puissions maintenant vous exprimer ainsi, en toutes lettres,
sur notre page couverture, à quel point nous apprécions
votre engagement.
Déjà, en ce début d’année 2009, les mois à venir promettent d’être riches en amitiés durables, en nouvelles réalisations et en projets stimulants.
L’année a débuté avec l’annonce de l’acquisition de l’œuvre Théâtre de cruauté, une installation immersive de
Geoffrey Farmer, artiste canadien de renommée internationale. Cette acquisition a été rendue possible grâce au généreux appui du Fonds de dotation Audain pour l’acquisition
d’art contemporain canadien, qui avait d’ailleurs permis au
Musée d’acquérir en 2006 l’œuvre Le drapeau du peuple, de
l’artiste canadien Brian Jungen.
À cette bonne nouvelle, j’ai l’immense plaisir d’ajouter
que la Financière Sun Life sera de retour au Musée, cette fois
à titre de commanditaire principal de l’extraordinaire
exposition à l’affiche l’été prochain : De Raphaël à Annibale
Carracci. L’art de la Rome pontificale. Vous vous souviendrez
qu’en 2007, Sun Life avait présenté Les paysages de Renoir et
en 2006, Emily Carr. Nouvelles perspectives.
Je suis également heureuse d’accueillir au sein de notre
famille une nouvelle entreprise partenaire. Comme vous
aurez l’occasion de le lire plus loin dans ce bulletin, TELUS
vient prêter son soutien à Artissimo, un des programmes
phares du Musée, destiné aux enfants et à leur famille.
Nous sommes profondément reconnaissants envers Sun

Pour poursuivre sur cette note positive, c’est avec un vif
enthousiasme que nous souhaitons la bienvenue au nouveau directeur du Musée des beaux-arts du Canada,

You Too Can Make a Lasting Difference
A teacher who loved Canadian art,
Evelyn McAndrew wanted to leave a lasting legacy to the National Collection. She
was also passionate about providing enduring support for the training of young
archivists.
To fulfill her first wish, she donated an
early work by New Brunswick artist
Miller Brittain, Street Scene, to the
National Gallery in 2000 – the work will
be featured in the exhibition Miller
Brittain. When the Stars Threw Down Their
Spears, to be presented at the Gallery later
this fall. And to fulfill her second wish,
she remembered our great institution in
her will. When she passed away a little
over a year ago, Evelyn left a bequest to
the NGC Foundation, requesting that the
funds be directed to the training of young
archivists. Her generosity allowed the
Foundation to create the Evelyn
Henderson McAndrew Fellowship for
Junior Archivists.
In leaving a bequest to the Foundation

as part of her estate planning, she joined
an increasing number of loyal patrons
who have made a larger financial contribution than might otherwise have been be
possible – and thus achieved a more profound impact on the Gallery’s endeavours.
It makes perfect sense. By using the financial assets you’ve built up over a lifetime, not just your current income, to
fund your philanthropic wishes, your
contribution and impact can grow dramatically. And there is the added advantage of retaining full control over your assets during your lifetime – which is very
compelling in our challenging economic
times.
Leaving a bequest also offers important tax benefits: your estate will receive
a tax receipt for the amount of the gift (or
the fair market value of the gifted property); this can reduce the tax your estate
needs to pay and thus preserve more of
your legacy for your loved ones and
favourite causes.
Making a gift of a life insurance policy
to the Foundation is another way to make
a lasting contribution to the National
Gallery. Affordable and accessible to
almost everyone, it has the added advantage of enabling you to fulfill your
philanthropic wishes while preserving
your other assets for your loved ones –
which can make it a very attractive proposition. And it also provides immediate or
deferred tax advantages, depending on
the approach you take to give the policy.
For example, if you purchase a policy
in which you name the National Gallery
of Canada Foundation as the owner and
beneficiary, you receive tax receipts for
the premiums you pay (or on the policy’s
cash surrender value if it is paid up).
Should you instead name the Foundation
as the beneficiary of the policy, but not its

Evelyn McAndrew, une enseignante passionnée d’art canadien, désirait apporter une
contribution durable à la Collection nationale et donner un appui solide à la formation
de jeunes archivistes.
Elle a réalisé son premier souhait en 2000 en faisant don au Musée de l’œuvre Scène
de rue de Miller Brittain, artiste néobrunswickois de grande renommée. Cette œuvre fera
d’ailleurs partie de l’exposition Miller Brittain. Quand les étoiles jetaient leurs lances, qui
sera présentée au Musée à l’automne prochain. Elle a ensuite réalisé son deuxième souhait en incluant notre grande institution dans son testament. À son décès, il y a un peu
plus d’un an, Mme McAndrew a fait un legs à la Fondation du MBAC, demandant que les
fonds soient consacrés à la formation de jeunes archivistes : grâce à sa générosité, la
Fondation a pu créer la Bourse Evelyn Henderson McAndrew pour les jeunes archivistes.
En faisant un legs à la Fondation, elle s’est jointe à un nombre croissant de fidèles
donateurs qui, comme elle, ont été en mesure d’apporter un appui financier plus important qu’il ne leur aurait été autrement possible et, ce faisant, ont pu laisser une empreinte
encore plus profonde sur les activités du Musée.
C’est tout à fait logique. En utilisant les actifs que vous avez accumulés tout au long
de votre vie pour atteindre vos objectifs philanthropiques – et non uniquement votre
revenu actuel – votre contribution et ses répercussions peuvent être d’autant plus
significatifs. De plus, vous conservez de votre vivant le plein contrôle de vos actifs – un
avantage fort intéressant en cette période d’incertitude économique.
Un legs offre d’autres avantages financiers : votre succession recevra un reçu d’impôt
au montant de votre don (ou de la juste valeur marchande des biens donnés), ce qui pourrait réduire le montant d’impôts qu’elle aura à payer et faire en sorte qu’une plus grande
part de votre héritage soit réservée aux êtres et aux causes qui vous sont chers.
Faire don d’une police d’assurance-vie à la Fondation est une autre façon d’apporter
une contribution durable au Musée. Simple, abordable et très accessible, cette approche
vous permet d’atteindre vos objectifs philanthropiques tout en préservant vos actifs pour
vos êtres chers. De plus, elle peut vous permettre de réaliser des économies fiscales
immédiates ou reportées, selon la formule de don que vous choisissez.
Par exemple, si vous désignez la Fondation du Musée des beaux-arts du Canada
comme bénéficiaire et propriétaire de votre police d’assurance-vie, vous recevrez des

appui à Artissimo
Children love exploring. With Artissimo, the National Gallery’s
popular family program where creative expression and informal learning are the order of the day, they experience the exhilaration of actively exploring art together with their families.
Thanks to the generous support of TELUS, children and
their families will be able to enjoy new activities like Art
Buddies, where dolls representing people and animals in artworks give them an entry point into looking at art; Super
Structures, where they explore basic architectural principles
using building blocks; and the self-guided Families at the
Gallery, where activities, questions and information encourage
careful looking.
A national leader in telecommunications, TELUS is committed to the philosophy to “give where we live” and help foster
the well-being of our communities. Nine TELUS Community
Boards in Canada, including the TELUS Ottawa Community
Board, guide the company’s philanthropic efforts.

Les enfants aiment explorer. C’est ce qui fait la popularité d’Artissimo,
ce programme du Musée où l’expression artistique et l’instruction informelle sont à l’ordre du jour, et où les enfants peuvent donner libre
cours à leur créativité et explorer le monde de l’art en compagnie des
membres de leur famille.
Grâce au généreux appui de TELUS, le Musée peut offrir aux familles
une nouvelle série d’activités, dont Copains copies, qui offre aux enfants
une nouvelle façon d’observer l’art grâce à des poupées représentant
des personnages d’œuvres de la collection; Super Structures, qui leur
permet d’explorer les principes fondamentaux de l’architecture à l’aide
de jeux de construction; et Familles au Musée, des visites autonomes dont
les activités, les questions et les renseignements incitent à porter un regard attentif aux différentes œuvres.
