s you read the papers or watched the news recently,
you probably noticed many stories on philanthropy
and its tremendous contribution to our communities.
That is because November 15 was National Philanthropy Day,
a day set aside to reflect on the meaning of giving and express
appreciation to those who give.
How inspiring and comforting it is to know that, as mentioned in Macleans, over 85% of Canadians make a charitable
donation over the course of a year and that more than 25%
volunteer their time (according to Forefront magazine). How
impressive it is that charitable giving in Canada increased to an
estimated $11 billion in 2005, again according to Macleans.
Impressive, comforting, and inspiring, as it is proof of
Canadians’ commitment to the quality of their community and
their generosity.
We at the Gallery and the Foundation have been privileged
to experience this generosity over the years. It is my great
pleasure to take this special opportunity to thank you, our
donors and our partners, for your continued support. Never
taken for granted, your generosity is deeply appreciated as it is
indispensable to the endeavors that are at the very heart of the
National Gallery. On this note, I would like to extend a warm
welcome to Mr. W. James Westlake and Mr. Andrew C.
Pilkington, who have recently joined the Board of Directors of
the Foundation, and thank most sincerely Mr. I. David
Marshall for his invaluable contribution while he served on
the Board.
For the many of you who would like to make a lasting
contribution to the Gallery through the Foundation, our feature article on Planned Giving is certain to be of great interest.
I invite you to read it and to contact us if you would like to
discuss your plans in regards to the Gallery.
Earlier this fall, we were delighted to thank our Circle
patrons at a breakfast held at the Gallery, during which they
heard about the Gallery’s Library and Archives and several of
the projects they’ve helped fund over the last year. A few
weeks later, we were most happy to welcome a new group to
the Circle, the Photography Collectors Group. As we go to
press, we look with great anticipation to our annual Donor
Recognition Reception, which takes place in the Great Hall on
December 4. Always a wonderful
opportunity to applaud our
patrons and, of course, continue
our tradition of lighting the magnificent Christmas tree in the
Great Hall, welcoming the festive
season, this year’s reception takes
on a special meaning as we celebrate the Foundation’s 10 th
anniversary. I hope to see you

et de son incidence positive sur nos
communautés. En effet, le 15 novembre

F
rom across the country, Canadians of all walks of life
give to the National Gallery of Canada Foundation
because they care deeply about preserving our rich
visual arts heritage for future generations.
Choosing to make a gift to a charity such as the
Foundation, including how and to what extent to contribute,
is always a very personal decision.
Planned giving makes it in fact easier for art lovers of most
income levels to provide the National Gallery with meaningful
and lasting support and, in so doing, leave a legacy that will
endure.
Planning your gift may enable you to make a larger contribution than you would have thought possible. This is why:
you can plan your gift so that it provides you with the most
attractive tax advantage. Your gift can be immediate or
deferred, giving you utmost flexibility. And your gift can be
made from your accumulated resources or assets rather than
your income, enabling you to maximize your contribution in
the context of your overall tax, financial, and personal objectives.
And so, it is no surprise that planned giving is becoming a
more common and significant part not only of estate planning
but also of current financial planning for Canadians.
There are three popular ways to make a planned gift that
fulfills your philanthropic objectives and maximizes the benefits for you, the Foundation, and the National Gallery. They
are: gifts of publicly-listed securities, charitable bequests,
which can take many forms, and deferred gifts of a life insurance policy, RRSPs or RRIFs.
Gifts of publicly-listed securities
Whether the gift is made immediately or deferred to be part
of a bequest, this option enables you or your estate to receive
a tax receipt for the full value of the security donated; with
this type of gift, the capital gains are not taxed. The benefits
can be significant: while a cash donation of $20,000 could
yield a tax reduction of $9,200 (for a resident of Ontario), a gift
of securities of the same value ($20,000) and a cost base of
$12,000 will result not only in a net income tax reduction of
$9,200 (as would be the case for the cash donation), but also
in an additional saving of $1,840 — the tax that would otherwise be payable on the capital gain of $8,000.*
Since the federal government introduced the elimination of
capital gains tax on donations of publicly-listed securities in
its 2006 budget, the Foundation has seen more patrons take
advantage of this way of giving to make an initial donation,
increase the value of their gift, or shorten the timeframe for
completing a multi-year gift. Securities accounted for over
60% of the funds donated to the Foundation in its last fiscal
year.
A bequest by will or irrevocable trust
Bequests allow you to make thoughtful decisions regarding
your loved ones and other organizations you may have supported throughout your lifetime. And they enable you to defer
your gift to the future, retaining control of your assets while
alive. Including a bequest to the Foundation in your will is
one of the easiest ways to perpetuate your commitment to the
National Gallery. To date, bequests and estate gifts ranging
from $5,000 to over $1.5 million (excluding works of art)
account for more than 25% of the Foundation’s total endowment fund.
A bequest can take many forms, including a lump sum of
money, a gift of securities, real estate, personal property such
as art, a named percentage or portion of your estate, a percentage of estate residue, and so on.
Other deferred gifts
Among other deferred gifts, life insurance policies, RRSPs,
and RRIFs are also popular. A life insurance policy in particular can be an affordable way for you to make a future major
gift to the Foundation.
Just imagine for a moment that 10% of the 10,000 households that have joined the Gallery’s family of members leave
an average bequest of $25,000 to the Foundation. This would
add $25 million to its endowment and generate an additional
investment revenue of well over $1 million a year to support
the Gallery’s endeavours!

du Canada parce qu’il leur importe de préserver notre
riche patrimoine d’arts visuels pour les générations à venir.
Faire un don à un organisme de bienfaisance comme la
Fondation, déterminer le montant de sa contribution et choisir
le mode de don sont toujours des décisions très personnelles.
Les dons planifiés permettent aux amateurs d'art, peu
importe leurs revenus, d’appuyer le Musée de façon significative, et ce faisant, de laisser un héritage durable.
Les dons planifiés peuvent vous permettre de faire une différence et ce, plus que vous n’auriez cru possible. Cela s’explique par le fait que vous pouvez planifier votre don de façon
à profiter des avantages fiscaux les plus attrayants. Votre don
peut être immédiat ou différé, ce qui vous assure une souplesse
maximale. De plus, il peut être fait au moyen de ressources
accumulées, plutôt que de votre revenu, afin de maximiser
votre contribution dans le contexte de vos objectifs fiscaux,
financiers et personnels.
Il n’est donc pas surprenant de constater que de plus en
plus de Canadiens intègrent les dons planifiés non seulement
dans la planification de leur succession mais aussi dans la planification de leurs finances.
Il y a trois modes de dons planifiés populaires qui permettent de répondre à vos objectifs financiers et de maximiser les
avantages pour vous, pour la Fondation et pour le Musée des
beaux-arts : les dons de titres ou d’actions, les legs de bienfaisance, qui peuvent prendre plusieurs formes, et les dons différés de polices d'assurance vie, de REER ou de FERR.
Dons de titres ou d’actions
Qu’un don d’actions soit immédiat ou reporté afin d’être
intégré à un legs, cette option vous permet (ou permet à votre
succession) de recevoir un reçu d’impôt pour la valeur totale
des actions. De plus, les gains en capital ne sont pas imposables
avec ce type de don. Les avantages en sont importants : alors
qu’un don de 20 000 $ en argent peut amener une réduction
d’impôt de 9 200 $ pour un(e) résident(e) de l’Ontario, un don
d’actions de la même valeur, soit 20 000 $, et d’un coût de
12 000 $ (par exemple) peut amener non seulement une réduction d’impôt de 9 200 $ mais aussi une économie supplémentaire de 1 840 $, soit l’impôt qui serait redevable sur le gain en
capital de 8 000 $.*
Depuis l’élimination de l’impôt sur les gains en capital pour
les dons de titres ou d’actions dans le budget fédéral de 2006,
la Fondation a constaté qu’un nombre accru de gens profitaient de cette forme de don pour faire un don initial, accroître
la valeur de leur don ou encore réduire la période de temps
prévue pour remplir une promesse de don étendue sur plusieurs années. Plus de 60 % des montants donnés à la
Fondation au cours de son exercice financier de 2006-2007
prenaient la forme de dons de titres et d’actions.
Legs par testament ou en fiducie irrévocable
Cette option vous permet de prendre des décisions réfléchies
concernant vos êtres chers et les organismes que vous avez
appuyés au cours de votre vie. Elle vous permet également de
différer votre don et de maintenir le contrôle de vos biens de
votre vivant. L’inclusion d’un legs à la Fondation dans votre
testament est une des façons les plus simples de perpétuer
votre engagement envers le Musée des beaux-arts. Plus de
25 % du fonds de dotation de la Fondation proviennent de
legs et de dons de succession qui varient de 5 000 $ à plus de
1,5 million de dollars (sans inclure les dons d’oeuvres d’art).
Un legs peut prendre plusieurs formes, notamment un
montant forfaitaire; un don d’actions, de biens immobiliers ou
de biens personnels comme des œuvres d’art; un pourcentage
donné de votre succession; un pourcentage du reliquat de
votre succession; et ainsi de suite.
Autres modes de dons différés
Parmi les autres modes de dons différés, les polices d’assurance vie, les REER et les FERR sont populaires. Les polices
d’assurance vie constituent une façon particulièrement abordable de faire un futur don majeur à la Fondation.
Imaginez pour un instant que 10 % des 10 000 foyers qui
font parti de la famille des membres du Musée font un legs de
25 000 $ en moyenne. La Fondation ajouterait 25 millions de
dollars à son fonds de dotation, ce qui représente un rendement annuel de plus de 1 million de dollars pour appuyer les
programmes et activités essentiels du Musée.
