Massive q u a r t z v e i n s , which f o l l o w e i t h e r t h e bedding o r t h e
s h e a r i n g , c o n t a i n low g o l d - s i l v e r v a l u e s , u s u a l l y a s s o c i a t e d
w i t h p y r i t e and minor g a l e n a and s p h a l e r i t e ,
The p r o p e r t y i s l o c a t e d a t 2,700' e l e v a t i o n some 6 km
west-northwest of O l i v e r and 22 km north-northwest of Osoyoos.
The p r o p e r t y i s a d j o i n e d on t h e n o r t h w e s t by t h e Fairview
(82 E/4, AU 5) and on t h e s o u t h e a s t by t h e Koming S t a r
(82 E/4, AU 4 ) .
The ground was s t a k e d i n 1888 and 5 claims were Crowng r a n t e d ; t h e Stemset F r . (Lot 2 1 s ) , Gunsite F r . (Lot 25 s ) ,
t h e Stemwinder (Lot 384) and Brown Bear (Lot 385) t o G. Sheehan
and a s s o c i a t e s i n 1892, and t h e Wynn M (Lot 554) t o E.D.
Reynolds i n 1894.
E a r l y work by i n d i v i d u a l s produced s m a l l amounts of o r e
which were m i l l e d a t a 5-stamp m i l l i n s t a l l e d by an E n g l i s h
s y n d i c a t e on Reed Creek some 2.5 km t o t h e s o u t h e a s t . The
s y n d i c a t e i n May 1893 i n c o r p o r a t e d The S t r a t h y r e VLning
Company (Limited). The company expanded t h e m i l l t o a 10stamp o p e r a t i o n and i n 1896 purchased t h e Brown Bear and
Wynn M claims ; development work was mainly on t h e Brown Bear;
t h e workings i n 1897 i n c l u d e d a 300' c r o s s c u t a d i t and
d r i f t s ; t h e company h e l d t h e claims u n t i l 1907.
The Stemwinder c l a i m was a c q u i r e d by an E n g l i s h compaay.,
The Fairview Consolidated Gold Mines Company, of Fairview,
B.C. L i m i t e d , which was i n c o r p o r a t e d i n B r i t i s h Columbia i n
1897, Underground development t o 1901 t o t a l l e d a b o u t 4,000'
of s h a f t , c r o s s c u t s and d r i f t s . Stamp m i l l s l o c a t e d a t t h e
Tin Horn and J o e Dandy p r o p e r t i e s were purchased and i n s t a l l e d
a t t h e Stemwinder; t h e m i l l was expanded t o 46 stamps (175 t p d )
i n 1902. A s t h e m i l l recovered o n l y about 50% of t h e g o l d , a
150 tpd cyanide p l a n t was i n s t a l l e d i n 1903. Operations
ceased i n 1904,
The Stemwinder Gold and Coal Mining Company, Limited was
i n c o r p o r a t e d i n J u l y 1906 t o a c q u i r e t h e p r o p e r t y . A new
s h a f t was sunk t o 500' and a c r o s s c u t d r i v e n t o t h e n o r t h
v e i n . A c r o s s c u t on t h e 300' l e v e l i n t e r s e c t e d t h e former
i n c l i n e d s h a f t . The a d j a c e n t Brown Bear and Wynn M c l a i m s
were purchased from t h e S t r a t h y r e company i n 1907. Operat i o n s ceased e a r l y i n 1908.
By t h e 1930's t h e p r o p e r t y was owned by t h e F e d e r a l Mining
