TERRE ET VINS AU PAYS DE COLMAR THE ALSACE WINES ROUTE “Terre & Vins au Pays de Colmar” is a unique destination where, from Saint-Hippolyte to Westhalten, you can admire a landscape comprised of plains, the Vosges mountains and vineyards. Take the time to discover the famous medieval towns of Bergheim, Ribeauvillé, Zellenberg, Riquewihr, Kaysersberg and Eguisheim. Every town and village includes a wealth of curiosities such as Niedermorschwihr’s church tower with its twisted spire, Hunawihr’s fortified church and its stork reintroduction centre, and the castle of the Confrérie Saint-Etienne d’Alsace guild which is also home to the wine museum (in Kientzheim). Don’t forget to stop off in Colmar, a town synonymous with art and history and the capital of the Alsatian wine producing area. You can visit the Unterlinden museum famous worldwide as the home of the Isenheim Altarpiece, count the faces at the Maison des Têtes, or admire the paintings at the Maison Pfister. Finally, the “trois châteaux of Husseren-les-Châteaux, or those of Ribeauvillé offer an incredible view over the wine producing area and its natural attractions, sheltered by the foothills of the “Ballons des Vosges Regional Nature Park. A UNIQUE TOURIST TRAIL 55 SAINTHIPPOLYTE France’s most famous wine route offers a journey like no other through picturesque landscapes, to discover the region’s unique architecture, cuisine and culture. From Wissembourg to Thann, five different wine producing areas await you, two of which are covered by the “Vignobles et Découvertes” label. THE “VIGNOBLES ET DÉCOUVERTES” LABEL This national label will help you prepare your stay in the wine producing areas through a selection of high quality services including reception staff offering a welcome in several languages or the sharing of local knowledge about wine and heritage using a number of educational and authentic approaches. The vineyards are chiefly located on the hillsides and are grown on terraced plots in Guebwiller and Thann. Sometimes, the slopes are so steeps that the winegrowers need to use ropes! A number of towns and villages offer many possibilities for discoveries and visits including: the collegiate church of Saint-Thiébaut and l’oeil de la Sorcière in Thann, the former fortifications of Cernay, the monastery of the Dominicans in Guebwiller (a town of art and history), the abbey church of Murbach, or the Espace des Sources in Soultzmatt… The museums around the southern edge of the Alsace Wines Route (Thann) and the winegrowers’ museum in Wuenheim will help you better understand the geological diversity of the Alsatian vineyards and the work of the winegrowers. 90 SOULTZMATT ZINNKOEPFLÉ 67 65 66 69 70 71 73 78 79 75 76 80 77 81 83 82 VALLÉE NOBLE 91 ORSCHWIHR 85 92 BERGHOLTZZELL 87 SPIEGEL 94 GUEBWILLER 84 86 PFINGSTBERG 93 BERGHOLTZ COLMAR 72 74 Located in the heart of the “Vallée Noble” Worth visiting: Centre d’interprétation de l’eau (Water discovery & visitor centre) KESSLER, KITTERLÉ, SAERING & SPIEGEL Worth visiting: The Théodore Deck Museum and the Florival local museum. 95 SOULTZ Worth visiting: Nef des Jouets / Musée du Bucheneck. 96 WUENHEIM 88 90 89 OLLWILLER Worth visiting: Musée du vigneron. 97 WATTWILLER 92 Worth visiting: Musée mémorial du Viel Armand Fondation François Schneider Worth visiting: abri mémoire guerre 1914-18 16 32 31 BARR SCHLOSSBERG & FURSTENTUM 98 UFFHOLTZ 68 BERGHEIM 30 FRANKSTEIN 21 DORLISHEIM 58 28 MARCKRAIN 66 SIGOLSHEIM OBERNAI 27 26 BLIENSCHWILLER Worth visiting: The Mutzig Fort 67 BERGBIETEN 24 ROSACKER Worth visiting: The Stork & otter reintroduction centre / The Butterfly house 89 WESTHALTEN Worth visiting: Musée historique de la Chartreuse ALTENBERG DE BERGBIETEN ALTENBERG DE BERGHEIM ALTENBERG DE WOLXHEIM BRAND BRUDERTHAL EICHBERG MOLSHEIM Worth visiting: The Bailiwick Museum 20 MUTZIG 13 16 19 BERGHEIM GEISBERG, KIRCHBERG & OSTERBERG 88 ROUFFACH NORDHEIM KUTTOLSHEIM WANGEN KIRCHHEIM ODRATZHEIM WESTHOFFEN TRAENHEIM SCHARRACHBERGHEIM ENGELBERG DAHLENHEIM ENGELBERG WOLXHEIM OSTHOFFEN BALBRONN BERGBIETEN ALTENBERG DE BERGBIETEN DANGOLSHEIM SOULTZ LES BAINS WOLXHEIM ALTENBERG DE WOLXHEIM WOLXHEIM ERGERSHEIM AVOLSHEIM MOLSHEIM BRUDERTHAL GRANDS CRUS 17 18 RODERN Worth visiting: Conservatory of graphical arts & techniques, The Vineyard and Winemaking Museum 85 HATTSTATT The mountain vineyard Worth visiting: The Museum of popular arts and traditions / The Val de Villé Centre 54 ORSCHWILLER 15 13 14 84 HERRLISHEIM 43 ALBÉ STEINKLOTZ 12 10 83 OBERMORSCHWIHR 41 BERNARDVILLÉ 42 REICHSFELD 53 KINTZHEIM 9 8 Worth visiting: The Witchcraft Museum 78 WINTZENHEIM 38 STOTZHEIM 39 EICHHOFFEN Just a few kilometres from Strasbourg, the European capital whose city centre is listed as “Unesco world heritage”, we find the vineyards of Kochersberg, the Couronne d’or and Molsheim. Easily accessible by car, you can also reach them by bike via the Véloroute du canal de la Bruche (the Bruche canal cycle trail) linking Strasbourg to Soultz-les-Bains and to the Véloroute du vignoble d’Alsace (Alsace vineyard cycle trail). Just like the Alsace Wines Route, this starts at Marlenheim, in the heart of the Couronne d’or, where the vines grow alongside cereal and fruit crops. By travelling along the wine trails (Bergbieten, Dahlenheim, Marlenheim Wangen, Traenheim…) or heading up the legendary Scharrach hill, you can admire the panoramic view over the Vosges, the Alsatian plains and Strasbourg Cathedral. Thematic trails such as the Bacchus trail will help you discover the region’s extensive architectural, religious and cultural heritage: The church of Le Dompeter in Avolsheim, the Chartreuse (charterhouse) in Molsheim, the Mutzig Fort, and much more. 7 STRASBOURG 11 6 20 ALTENBERG DE BERGHEIM & KANZLERBERG 77 WIHRAUVAL 36 ZELLWILLER 37 SAINTPIERRE VIGNOBLE DE STRASBOURG 58 BERGHEIM 76 WALBACH ZOTZENBERG Worth visiting: The Mémoire de vignerons wine museum Worth visiting: Museum Westercamp 5 68 KAYSERSBERG OTTROTT 30 GOXWILLER 31 HEILIGENSTEIN 1 4 The headquarters of the Confrérie Saint-Etienne guild Worth visiting: The Museum of Alsatian wine & winemaking 28 BERNARDSWILLER 29 SAINTNABOR CLEEBOURG GLOECKELBERG 67 KIENTZHEIM 24 BISCHOFFSHEIM 25 BOERSCHSAINTLEONARD WISSEMBOURG MARLENHEIM Worth visiting: The National Necropolis of the French 1st Army and the American Monument Worth visiting: Romanesque House Located in the far north of Alsace, the Wissembourg and Cleebourg region embodies the unique atmosphere of rural Alsace. It’s here in the Outre-Forêt area that you can discover some of the best preserved Alsatian traditions such as half-timbered houses dating from the 18th and 19th centuries, costumes, folklore and local dialects, which are still widely spoken. Its wine producing area is the most northerly of those to be discovered on the Alsace Wines Route. It covers the districts of Cleebourg, Rott, Oberhoffen, Steinseltz, Riedseltz and Wissembourg. The winegrowers here are members of the Coopérative viticole de Cleebourg (a winegrowing cooperative) which manages around 189 hectares of vineyards. Numerous cycle trails and paths enable you to explore it and discover its many attractions including picturesque towns and villages such as Wissembourg, Hunsbach and Seebach, mediaeval castles, remains from the Second World War (the Maginot Line), or local arts and crafts (pottery from Betschdorf and Soufflenheim). Don’t forget to take a detour and explore the Northern Vosges Regional Nature Park, a World Biosphere Reserve. 2 57 RORSCHWIHR 22 ROSENWILLER 23 ROSHEIM 26 OTTROTT 27 OBERNAI 3 GLOECKELBERG CÔTEAUX DU HAUT-KOENIGSBOURG, SAINT-HIPPOLYTE RODERN 56 RODERN From Rosenwiller to Orschwiller, between Mont Sainte-Odile and the castle of Haut-Koenigsbourg, the “Cœur d’Alsace” (Heart of Alsace) destination offers a stunning mosaic of landscapes combining vineyards and forests overlooked by the impressive ruins of mediaeval castles. Whether on foot or by mountain bike, head off to tackle the Landsberg, the Spesbourg, the Haut-Andlau, the Bernstein… or for a gentler route, explore the vineyards by taking a wine trail such as that of Mittelbergheim, where you can also learn to draw. Are you fond of museums and architecture? Visit the Seigneurie of Andlau, the Museum of Folie Marco, the winegrowing Museum of Mittelbergheim, the Haut-Koenigsbourg, or the abbey of Andlau… Explore the narrow streets of the mediaeval villages and admire the beauty of the winegrowers’ homes. And for the children, don’t forget the Volerie des Aigles (Eagle Park) and the Montagne des Singes (Monkey Mountain) in Kintzheim.
