LearnAlberta.ca Update Mise à jour de LearnAlberta.ca February 2008/Fevrier 2008 This update outlines the new resources and information that have recently become available at LearnAlberta.ca. Please feel free to forward this document to others in the learning community. Voici une mise à jour au sujet des nouveautés sur le site Web de LearnAlberta.ca. New Resources Launched Nouvelles ressources en vedette Physique 20 (11e année) Cette ressource comprend une série de leçons interactives qui correspondent aux modules du cours Physique 20: la cinématique; et la dynamique. (Hello Friends) (Grades 4 and 5) The last three scenarios - 16, 17, and 18 - have been added to this interactive digital resource that supports the Grade 4 and Grade 5 Spanish Language and Culture NineYear Program of Study. The 18 scenarios include activities that involve listening, reading, pronunciation, writing, and speaking. Each scenario starts with an animation that presents new linguistic and cultural content. Scenarios also include activities for additional explanation and practice, as well as one to two production activities. Students may follow a suggested sequence or access activities in any order. This resource exposes students to a wide variety of Spanish accents and cultural content from various Spanish-speaking countries. UserID and Password Required Junior High Math Interactives (Grades 6, 7, 8 and 9) Algebra, circles, fractions and tessellations have been added to this multimedia resource. Other activities include interactive math activities, print activities, learning strategies, and videos that illustrate how math is used in everyday life. Math 3 Under the Sea (Grade 3) New 3-D objects and 2-D shapes, data analysis, division, fractions, patterns, perimeters, and Time activities have been added to this resources, which contains concept lessons that address the key outcomes from the Alberta Grade 3 mathematics curriculum. Quinze Minutes Plus – Episode 10: En visite (Grades 5 and 6) This episode is the newest addition to the Quinze Minute Plus series of videos. This French language video shows people on vacation in Guadeloupe and France talking about activities they enjoy while on vacation. They respond to the questions: Tu t’amuses ici? ; Qu’est-ce qu’il y a à faire? ; Bonjour! D’où venez vous? ; Vous parlez combien de langue? ; A qui rend tu visites? Dialogue in the video focuses on French language phrases and vocabulary related to holidays and travel. Biology 20 (Grade 11) Flash piece animations from McGraw-Hill have been added to this resource. Subjects covered include Photosynthesis and Cellular Respiration and the Human System. UserID and Password Required Biology 30 (Grade 12) Flash piece animations from McGraw-Hill have been added to this resource. Subjects covered include Systems Regulating Change, Reproduction and Development, Cells, Chromosomes and DNA, as well as Supplemental Resources. UserID and Password Required Cyber-Science (Grade 9) A new Gizmo has been added to this resource covering the topic Advanced Circuits under Electricity. Read and Write Gold Training This is a new teachers’ resource that can be used to assist struggling readers and writers. Teachers are shown how to use the software tool “Read and write Gold Suite” to assist auditory learners. The tools are demonstrated by Scott Marfilius, an assistive/educational technology consultant. PC and Mac platforms are presented. The tools can be applied to any subject or grade level. Please note, because the resource does not have a subject index, it can only be found on LearnAlberta.ca by using the search function and typing in the title. Online Guide to Implementation Teaching controversial issues In this resource Patrick Clarke describes an approach to teaching controversial issues: analyzing an issue, considering the merits of an argument, and forming an opinion on the basis of critical analysis. A listing of common strategies used to manipulate arguments is provided. A Classroom Example of Asking Powerful Questions (Kindergarten, Grades 1 – 11) In this multimedia presentation, teachers and students work through the suggested lesson activities in the resource entitled Modeling the Tools: Asking Powerful Questions. Activities included in the resource help develop students’ critical thinking skills as they prepare for an interview. Students are challenged to identify criteria for effective questions and then to frame questions that meet these criteria. Teacher Support Material for Social Studies 20-1 and 20-2: Overarching Critical Inquiry: In Pursuit of National Interests Overarching Critical Inquiry: In Pursuit of an Identity Overarching Critical Inquiry: The Merits of Internationalism Overarching Critical Inquiry: In Search of a Canadian National Identity Lesson Plans for Social Studies K-12 Modeling the Tools: Analyzing a Situation Modeling the Tools: Reaching Group Consensus Teacher Support Material for Social Studies K-12 Support Material: Placemat Activity Support Material: Defining Terms Support Material: Venn Diagrams Aboriginal Collections: A Thematic Listing of Resources with Aboriginal Content This resource consists of bibliographic information and annotations for a selection of books and other resources containing Aboriginal content. Resource listings are correlated with the Alberta Social Studies Program of Studies and are sorted by grade level. Focusing on Big Ideas and Key Issues This resource (previously titled What's the Big Idea?) provides background information regarding the K-10 Alberta Social Studies Program of Studies. It includes an overview of the organization of the grade level contents, and identification of the big ideas, themes or issues for each grade level. It also includes background information regarding the selection of particular focus topics such as the communities at the grade 2 (Acadian, Inuit, and prairie) and grade 3 (India, Ukraine, Peru, Tunisia) levels, and the historical worldviews (Japan, Renaissance Europe, and Spanish and Aztec) at the grade 8 level.
