Alberta Education will be launching the renovated LearnAlberta.ca Web site in August
2008. Renovations include a new look, new features, and additional learning and teaching
resources (the merging of Online Guide to Implementation, Tools4Teachers and existing
LearnAlberta.ca content). This will be the last update until the renovated site is launched
and regular content launch schedules resume.
This update outlines the new resources and information that have recently become
available at LearnAlberta.ca. Please feel free to forward this document to others in the
learning community.

This video discusses cigarette content, effects of smoking on the body and the wallet, reasons
why teens smoke, nicotine and addiction, alternate forms of tobacco use, how to quit and

Portion-Size Me: An Epic of Proper Portions Segment 1 (Grades 8 and 9)
This documentary tracks two university students eating only fast food for 30 days. They make
proper portion decisions and healthy food choices at fast-food restaurants. This results in weight
loss and continued good health. The video concludes that it is not what you eat but how much
you eat that causes obesity.

Portion-Size Me: An Epic of Proper Portions Segment 2 (Grades 8 and 9)
This documentary discusses who should determine portion size—the industry or the individual,
and how it should be determined. It looks at menu options at a number of fast-food restaurants
and suggests how to make wise and healthy food choices when eating out.

Food Safety (Grades 10 and 11)
Students learn the fundamentals of food safety in a virtual restaurant environment. Video clips
illustrate correct procedures for handling and storing foods. Key temperatures, hot food holding
practices, the importance of food labels and dates and general principles of food storage are
reviewed in detail. Students can apply knowledge of the First-In-First-Out (FIFO) method and
cold food storage in interactive lessons.
The Hand-washing Challenge (Kindergarten and grades 1, 2 and 3)
Students identify when hand washing is an appropriate course of action and explore the proper
technique for washing hands.
Hand Hygiene (Grade 4)
Students analyze scenarios to identify when hand washing is an appropriate course of action.
Gilber in Peru (Series: My Life on the Farm) (Grade 3)
Gilber, an 11-year-old Peruvian boy, is featured in this video. Gilber engages in the daily
activities of his farming family as they grow crops, tend to the animals, bake, make woven goods
and take their wares to the trading market. Content Caution: The video shows the family eating
guinea pigs as part of their traditional meal.

Viviana, an 11-year-old Peruvian girl, is featured in this video. She travels around Lima

Richa, a 12-year-old Indian girl, is featured in this video. A trip into town, an excursion into the
countryside and time with family provide a glimpse of India's landscape, home life, culture and
leisure activities.

Physical geography and landforms of Canada are portrayed in this video. Place names, physical
features, events, historic sites, reserves, waterways and parks are presented through images,

Two Winters: Tales from Above the Earth (Grade 5)
This animation tells the tale of the Yukon's Tutchone people's fight to survive nearly two years of
winter after the 1815 volcanic eruption in Indonesia darkened skies around the world. It depicts
the struggle of one family when animals migrated to the coast and the sun was obscured by
clouds of volcanic ash. Content Caution: Consideration should be given to sensitive viewers as
this resource portrays images of death.

This video acknowledges the improvement in the quality of life in the Dominican Republic and
most developing countries, and examines the challenges that these nations still face. It also
highlights Africa's issues—drought, intertribal violence and uncontrolled spread of AIDS. The
contributions of community-based social development agencies and the impact of nongovernmental organizations (NGOs) are presented.
