CASEM Newsletter Nouvelles ACMSE CANADIAN ACADEMY OF SPORT AND EXERCISE MEDICINE ACADÉMIE CANADIENNE DE MÉDECINE DU SPORT ET DE L’EXERCICE President’s Note Over the years, it has been through the hard work and passion of many CASEM members that Sport and Exercise Medicine has evolved as an exciting and growing area of medicine. In this first newsletter of 2013 I would like to highlight some recent accomplishments and achievements of a few of our outstanding CASEM members. Congratulations to Dr Bob Brock who was selected the CASEM Sport Medicine Community Physician of the Year for 2012. The official announcement in the previous newsletter outlines his long list of accomplishments and as you can see, he has been around for a long time! What continues to impress me is his ongoing commitment to and involvement in the organization. After more than 25 years, he still has the energy and enthusiasm to sit on the credentials committee. February Edition / Edition Fevrier # 64 Dr. Renata Frankovich CASEM President 2012-2013 On the major games scene, I would like to congratulate Dr Connie Lebrun for being selected Chief Doctor for the Sochi 2014 Olympics Winter Games. There are very few people who have as much experience at major games as Connie and with that experience and her dedication, the team will be in good hands. Also Dr Navin Prasad has been selected as CMO for the Commonwealth Games in 2014 in Glasgow. Navin obviously did a great job under challenging conditions in the previous games in Delhi and as a result was chosen once again to lead the medical team. On home turf, Dr Julia Alleyne, CMO for the up coming Toronto 2015 Pan American Games has been working diligently on preparations for this major event. With Julia’s organizational skills and energy, the Pan Am nations will be sure to get exemplary medical care. I would like to thank Dr Winne Meeuwisse for leading the Clinical Journal of Sport Medicine from 1998 to 2012 as Editor-in-Chief. Under Winne’s leadership, the CJSM has become an important asset enhancing the academic and research credibility of sport medicine in Canada. Much Dawn Haworth, of the work done by Merrilee and Lisa is behind the scenes or with the Royal College or the [email protected] College of Family Physicians. I am optimistic that in the future our day to day clinical practice will benefit from speciality recognition by the colleges. Communications Officer Your opportunity to meet and mingle with your CASEM colleagues is coming up in April in Whistler, so do remember to register for the Annual Symposium. The program looks very exciting and I look forward to seeing you all there. The 2013 Annual Symposium coming up in Whistler is shaping up to be a memorable one. Speakers will be coming from all corners of the continent and overseas to talk to you about Issues in Sports Medicine that will help you clinically in the office, with team care, out in the wilderness and on the ski hill. We have amalgamated many aspects of Sport Medicine into the program and put just a small ‘Western Edge’ to them. Our Opening Keynote will be from Rick Hansen, who is just coming off of the 25th Anniversary of his historic Relay, and we will have a Closing Keynote from Beckie Scott, who will be talking about Doping and the Empty Podium. Dr. Jack Taunton will be giving the Honoured Lance Richard lecture on Mentorship in Sports Medicine. Sandwiched between these inspiring talks will be others as well as loads of current information, interactive workshops and social fun. Registration numbers are far exceeding expectations, so be sure to sign up soon and reserve your lodging. We’re looking forward to seeing everyone in Whistler in April!! Your Whistler 2013 Organizing Committee Page 5 CASEM Newsletter/ Nouvelles ACMSE Athletes with a Disability Having been involved with the Paralympic movement since the Commonwealth Games in 2006, I have added a new item to my role as a physician. This is not exclusive to my interest in sports medicine but as a medical practitioner. As I have mentioned in an interview in a recent Medical Post, physicians are in a prime position to alter the lives of many individuals with congenital or acquired disabilities. Pediatricians may see the future athletes as neonates and many of us will see patients who are struck with conditions requiring amputations or involved in vehicular accidents causing damages that are irreparable. I don’t have the benefit of recent statistics but the Canadian Paralympic Committee (CPC) still quotes 2001 numbers stating only 3% of Canadians with a disability are active in sports. We can change that. Here is a funny story. I was working in ER and seeing a 12 year old lad who was concussed during a hockey game. The usual history and evaluation takes place and I proceeded to discuss the issues of concussions as all of us do on a frequent basis. Although I know I will get blasted by many of you for this following statement, I have to state that during my evaluation of a concussed patient, especially one who is fully recovered when they present in ER, I do not routinely test the ankle reflexes at the Achilles. I often mention that a hit to the head (skull) is mechanically similar to a hit to the tibia: it hurts as the bone is hit without much protective covering. This is different from the concussion mechanism involving some form of inertial shift of the brain from an impact that may not be directly to the head. As I go through my explanation of the skull impact I often demonstrate by tapping on the patient’s shin….. to the parents’ and the patient’s amusement, I hit his prosthetic leg which was covered by his sweat pants! They said “That won’t hurt him much, it’s fake!”. I guess you had to be there, but it was a very funny moment. Congenital amniotic banding also caused some deformities to one of his hands. We had a great chat about how active he was and not planning on slowing down. We discussed all the sports where he could get involved not only on the recreational level but the international scene. As most parents are, they were completely unaware of the existence of the CPC and other organizations helping these future athletes progress and participate. Added to the usual offering of the Thinkfirst website for patients to get more information after their concussion, I included the CPC website for them to get more involved. Never miss an opportunity to get patients involved in sports, especially when you find the occasional prosthetic leg during your exams. - Dr Richard Goudie Page 6 CASEM Newsletter/ Nouvelles ACMSE Docs in Motion -Dr. Richard Goudie “Practice what you preach”. How many times have we heard that one! We are long past the Camel adds with the doctor stating his preference of cigarettes. The difficulty is trying to express to our patients involved in ultra-marathons and double -ironman distances that “we know what they are going through”. I do not attempt to engage in such events as I truly don’t have enough time on my hands (or talent…..) but I do preach the passion of cycling in wine country. Darlene and I teamed up with friends to cycle in Sonoma Valley in the fall. Great riding. Thigh blasting grades of Pine Flat hill climb (see a YouTube video of Contador and Leipheimer training there before the Tour of California). During the long climb, I never figured out why it was called Pine FLAT hill. Perfect weather. Stopping for port tasting at 10 in the morning, followed by an eventual maximum threshold 15 km effort after lunch so we wouldn’t be late for a booked tasting at a great winery. In the evenings, the town of Healdsburg offers excellent restaurants to cater for the replenishment meals. Practice what you preach! Richard and Darlene enjoying a bike and Wine tour!
