Course description: Development of oral skills through skits, debates, and hypothetical
situations. This course is for non-heritage speakers and will be conducted entirely in French.
Prerequisite: one year prior study at college level or permission of the instructor. It is advised
that students register simultaneously for FRE 2200 Intermediate French, which reinforces
grammar and writing skills in French.
Course objectives: In this course we will reinforce and develop the communication skills
studied at the elementary levels. As a result, at the end of the semester you will have acquired the
necessary tools for oral communication at the intermediate level as well as a sound preparation
for the advanced conversation class in French.
Required Textbook:
Exercices communicatifs de la Grammaire progressive du français. Niveau intermédiaire by
Maïa Grégoire & Gracia Merlo. Clé International: 2004. ISBN: 978-2-09-033359-6
Recommended Textbook:
Grammaire progressive du français. Niveau intermédiaire by Maïa Grégoire & Odile Thiévenaz.
Clé International: 2003. ISBN: 978-2-09-033848-5
Classroom etiquette: An atmosphere of mutual respect in class is in order and your undivided
attention is a must. Please do not hold conversations with classmates whenever your professor or
another student is speaking. Also refrain from participating in any other distractive behavior.
CELL PHONES MUST BE TURNED OFF DURING THE ENTIRE SESSION AND AWAY
FROM YOUR DESK. Please try to be on time and remain in class for the entire period: arriving
late and /or leaving early are a distraction to your classmates who are trying to listen to a lecture
or participate in a discussion. If you must be absent one day, you are still responsible for any
written or oral assignment given for the next session. You may want to get to know a couple of
reliable classmates who will let you know exactly what you missed and what is expected from
you in case you’re not able to contact me immediately. NO MAKE-UPS PLEASE. Expect to get
from this class what you give to it, so be here, be prepared, be awake, and expect to be
challenged. Bon courage!

COURSE STRUCTURE
Oral presentations: In this class you will do frequent and very short oral presentations that will
last anywhere between 1 and 3 minutes. The topics of these “exposés” will be given by your
instructor in class. You will also have a final presentation that will count as your final exam. The
topic for this final presentation must be previously discussed with your instructor and it will be
longer, between 3 and 5 minutes. It will be evaluated based on vocabulary, use of language,
fluency, pronunciation and intonation, and creativity.
Homework: Please note that you are responsible for preparing at home the oral exercises to be
done in class each day and for turning in all written assignments on time. To better prepare these
exercises, you will refer to the recommended textbook, La grammaire progressive du français;
the page numbers are detailed in your syllabus for each session under “Devoirs”. You will turn in
the Bilan section of the nine (9) units studied plus any other written assignment given in class.
Late homework will be penalized (the grade will drop one letter grade for each day late). An
Answer Key (Corrigés) is provided on pages 156-187 of your textbook so that you may correct
your mistakes with a highlighter or pen of different color. You will pay attention to not copy the
answers straight from the Answer Key because if you do, neither you nor your instructor will
know what needs to be reviewed. The purpose of doing homework is to practice and self-test.
Your grade will not be affected by the number of mistakes you make, so please do your
homework, highlight your mistakes, and then correct them according to the Answer Key.
Activités culturelles: Since language cannot be separated from culture, you will participate in a
minimum of three (3) of the many cultural activities that Le Cercle Français and Pi Delta Phi will
sponsor throughout the semester. If you would like to engage in a cultural activity other than
those organized by our two student organizations, please discuss it with your instructor for
approval.
Evaluations: There will be a total of four (4) tests (Sept. 11; Oct. 8; Nov. 4; Dec. 4), roughly one
at the end of each unit studied. Specific information on each test will be given in class. Due to
the conversational nature of our course, NO MAKE-UPS will be possible. If you have a special
circumstance to excuse your absence on a test day, please contact your instructor to discuss it as
soon as you’re able to.
