Yet, the expressive timelessness of these pieces has guaranteed their popularity. One of Durufle’s most performed works takes center stage in this year’s St Cecilia Concert. Composed in 1947, the Requiem uses as its raw material the Gregorian plainchant Mass of the Dead, and Durufle’s declared intent was “to reconcile Gregorian rhythm with modern meter.” Consequently, the plainsong is blended seamlessly with the harmonic language of French Impressionism. Frederic Blanc is the ‘organiste titulaire’ of Notre Dame d’Auteuil in Paris, France and is considered the inheritor of the Durufle musical legacy. Monsieur Blanc will accompany the Requiem and appear as soloist in Francis Poulenc’s ‘Concerto in G for Organ, Strings and Timpani’. The cathedral choirs will be joined by the choir of Calvary Episcopal Church, Williamsville and their director Debi Overton. The church is well known throughout Western New York for its rich tradition of liturgical music, and Debi Overton is one of the region's most versatile musicians. Our soloists include Quinn Patrick, a favorite of St Paul’s audiences, and Won Cho, singing with the cathedral choirs for the first time. —Andrew Cantrill Page 2 American Association of Teachers of French AATF-WNY National French Week 2006 Calendar of Events Open to the Public Thursday, Oct. 26: Béret Day! In my quest on the internet to find an apartment for my husband and me to rent in Aix-en-Provence or Nice I found numerous rentals for Paris but it was a little more difficult to find rentals for the region we were interested in (that were within our budget.) After many hours of searching I did end up with the following list of websites that would hopefully be helpful to others who wish to spend some time immersing themselves in french language and culture. We are renting in Nice for 6 weeks (beginning October 19) through Riviera-Rentals.com. These websites also include several areas of France: vrbo.com; guestapartment.fr; homeholidays.com; Welcome2France.com; Slowtravel.com or Slowtrav.com; holiday-rentals.co.UK/France; cheznous.com; panacherental.com; france-apartment.com; Riviera-Rentals.com; francevillas.com; france.com; holidayhomes.com; francehomestyle.com; francebyheart.com; villavacations.com; drawbridgetoeurope.com; justfrance.com; holidaylettings.co; riviera.fr/vsmhome.htm; monsite.wanadoo.fr; villfranche-sur-mer.com/accueil_ english.htm; gite.com; pour-les-vacances.com; odalys-vacance.fr; justfrance.com; ahomeinfrance.fr/2to6cote.htm; quality-villas.co.uk; cuendet.com; barclayweb.com; franchconnections.co.uk; francebyheart.com; nobleapartments.com; nice-rentals.co.uk The vrbo.com (vacation rental by owner) was very helpful. We looked for apartments that had 1 bedroom and a sofa bed. Sizes ranged from 35 - 60 sq. meters in our price range which is between 500 - 700 Euros/week. Another invaluable website is www.fodors.com. Click on TALK on the home page, pick your country and search words and you can find answers to almost any question you have. You can post your own question and receive answers from people who have been there and can advise you of their experience. I use it in planning every trip we take. AND it is free! I used this site to see what people who have been to Nice suggested as far as restaurants, surrounding area for day trips, etc. and came across several responses to someone who asked what the french attitude was at the present time towards Americans. Go there and have fun finding out! Bonnes vacances! —Doris Hill Les Nouvelles de l’Alliance Novembre - Décembre 2006 Page 5 Souper à la Fortune du Pot, Chez Paul et Marianne, le 16 septembre 2006. The setting was the gracious home of Marianne Vallet-Sandre, president of the Alliance Française de Buffalo, and Paul Pasquarello, her husband. A splendid choice of savory dishes prepared Jean Hill, Francine Bacardi, and Gabrielle Goujon by the guests graced the table, including ratatouille, quiche, aubergine Provençale, Coq au vin, Quenelles d’épinards, couscous, tapenade, assorted pâtés and more. Various bottles of white and red wine complemented the good food. With dessert came champagne for all, generously offered for the occasion by Jacqueline Morris who, Marianne sets out the feast unfortunately, was unable to be present to share in her much appreciated contribution to the event.
