I
write this preface on a cold, grey, mid-
winter afternoon. Though the day is bleak,
my spirits are high, as I contemplate the
sunny days to come, when you, our public,
will participate in our varied program offerings. Speakers such as Ariel Sabar, Shlipi
Somaya Gowda and the documentary “Who
the Jew Are You?” have an appeal that crosses generations. Philosopher and novelist
Rebecca Newberger Goldstein and Canadian
Jewish historian Harold Troper discuss their
newest works, while Esther Trepannier talks
about Montreal Jewish artists of the 1930’s
and 1940’s. The Canada Council readings
feature an architect (Avi Friedman), a wordsmith (Howard Richler) and author Avner
Mandelman. We present entertaining and
thought-provoking English and French feature-length films as well as the staging of
the play “Havdala”, by the Hebrew Theatre
of the JPL. We are proud of our partnership with the Montreal Jewish Genealogical
Society that brings an array of outstanding
speakers on the subject to our community.
Spring also heralds the return of the Yiddish
Café, and the stimulating programs planned
by the Yiddish Committee. As always, we
have a fresh array of language, literature and
informal learning opportunities to choose
from as well as our exceptional selection of
programs for children. Finally, the season
culminates in June with our annual Gala,
honouring four outstanding couples – Freda
and Irwin Browns; Pearl and Saul Lighter;
Chava and Ingie Respitz and Helen and
Jerrick Segal - and featuring actor Jim Brochu
in “Zero Hour”.
I, for one, can hardly wait!

J
'écris cette préface par une après-midi froide
et maussade. Mais en dépit du mauvais
temps, je conserve ma bonne humeur à la
pensée des beaux jours à venir quand nous
vous accueillerons. Cette saison, nous offrons
des programmes s’adressant à toutes les
générations, avec des conférenciers comme
Ariel Sabar et Shlipi Somaya Gowda et le
documentaire “Who the Jew Are You?”
honorera quatre couples remarquables: Freda
et Irwin Browns, Pearl et Saul Lighter, Chava
et Ingie Respitz, Helen et Jerrick Segal, avec
l’acteur Jim Brochu dans “Zero Hour”.
Quant à moi, je suis trè impatiente!

The Main Library
If you’re a recreational reader or a focused scholar, you’ll find what you’re looking
for among over 150,000 items in English, French, Hebrew, Yiddish and Russian. Like
any great public library, we carry the latest fiction and non-fiction bestsellers, firstrun DVDs, major newspapers and magazines, and music and audiobook CDs. Our
Judaica holdings – North America’s largest circulating collection – rival those of major
academic institutions.
Since 1914 the Archives’ mandate has been
to collect, preserve, and make available
the social and cultural accomplishments of
Montreal’s Jewish community using original
documents, photographs and recordings. Our
clients are local, national and international,
made up of both Jews and non-Jews,
scholars and the general public who regard
us as a vital educational source. The Archives
house collections of individuals, institutions,
associations, and schools depicting the history
and life of the community during the past
200 years. The collections include minutes,
correspondence, programs, flyers, posters,
manuscripts, artifacts, audio-visual materials
and a growing photograph collection.
Educational programmes and tours for all
ages available.

In addition, we maintain special collections on Montreal and Canadian Jewry, Yizkor
(Memorial) books of pre-Holocaust Jewish communities, sheet music and photographic archives, German-language Judaica, selections from Irving Layton’s personal
library and other rarities.
If you can’t visit us, let us visit you: our friendly Books-on-Wheels volunteers can bring
the Library to your door*. Our members can also use our Interlibrary Loan service to
obtain books from elsewhere, often for free or a minimal charge.

About the Jewish Public Library
After nearly a century, we remain unique among Montreal’s – and
the world’s – Jewish institutions. An internationally-recognized
Judaica resource, we also meet the diverse informational, educational
and recreational needs of Montrealers. With our Main Library,
Children’s Library, Archives, Multimedia Centre and Cultural
Programmes for adults and children, we connect our community to
the world …while bringing the world to our community.
The Archives
The Norman Berman Children’s Library
Our mascot, Shelley the Turtle, might move in little steps…but she still can hardly wait
to welcome you and your little and not-so-little ones to our library!
With 30,000 books, magazines, DVDs, kits and CDs, we take our young patrons to
heart, while keeping their parents, grandparents and caregivers in mind. Aside from
those classic favourites from your childhood – and today’s soon-to-be classics – we
supplement the school curriculum with extensive collections that meet the information and project needs of young students. Children and families also enjoy the
comprehensive collection of materials dealing with Jewish holidays, life and history, and
the exciting world of storytelling and children's literature.
We have a variety of programmes and activities for babies, toddlers and children
up to 14 years of age. Pre-School Story Times and Music, Author Visits, and MotherDaughter Book Review Clubs are just a sample of what’s happening at any given
time. You will find a detailed listing of all Children’s programmes on pages 30 to 33.
A book for your child – every month, for free!
Brought to you by the Jewish Public Library.
As part of the community wide GEN J Initiative, The PJ Library® (“PJ” for pajama) is
a programme seeking to engage Jewish families in Jewish life. Each participating child
receives an age-appropriate Jewish book or CD every month, free of charge. The aim
is to help families explore core values of Judaism and pass them on to their children.
The book and music list was chosen by foremost early-childhood experts. All books
come with guides to help families use the selection in their homes. The list includes
a wide array of themes such as Jewish holidays, folktales and Jewish family life. The PJ
Library is a program of the Harold Grinspoon Foundation in the United States and is
funded locally by the Marlene and Joel King Family Foundation.
The programme is for children between 6 months and 5½ years old and was offered
as the first pilot project in Canada in Montreal to the first 550 who registered. The
response has been so overwhelming that we had to create a waiting list of over 1,900
families (and still counting as we are adding on daily!)

About the Jewish Public Library
About the Jewish Public Library

talk with images of places from around the world. A finalist for the Quebec
Writers Federation’s Mavis Gallant Prize for non-fiction, A Place in Mind is
the result of Avi Friedman’s worldwide quest for successful environments
where people congregate and feel comfortable. Whether he writes of the
conviviality of a teahouse in Istanbul, the public art of Nunavut’s capital
Iqaluit, the serenity of Assisi, the crowded streets of Hong Kong, the squatter settlements of Tijuana, or the architectural harmony of neighbourhoods
in London and Amsterdam, Avi conveys his excitement at discovering
people-friendly places.
Avi Friedman is a professor of architecture at McGill University. He is
the recipient of several research and design awards including the World
Habitat Award. He is the author of seven books, including The Grow Home,
and was selected by Wallpaper magazine as 1 of 10 people from around
the world “most likely to change the way we live.”

An alternative movie screening and a discussion about Jewish identity today:
Lecture in Yiddish by Avrom Novershtern
“Who the Jew Are You?” by Alan Goldman (Canada, 2009), 50 min.
“Chaim Grade: The Struggle of the Self and the Striving
for Harmony”
An evening with Alan Goldman, and in collaboration with Shtetl on the Shortwave
Alan Goldman is a disconnected Jew who becomes a new father – only
to learn that his new son is not technically a Jew. If Alan could just figure
out what relevance Judaism has in his own life, he’d be able to help his
son find his place in the Jewish world. This film chronicles a discovery
of Jewish identity, along which Goldman uncovers a progressive, modern
re-invigorated Judaism.
Introduced by Tamara Kramer, creator and host of the radio program
Shtetl on the Shortwave (CKUT 90.3 FM) ShtetlMontreal.com.
Funded by the N. and E. Mendelson Endowment.
A founding member of the Yung-Vilne literary group, Chaim Grade's postHolocaust writing was an attempt to recreate the destroyed world of Vilna as
a fully-realized universe. This lecture will consider how, within this grand design,
Grade struggled to imbue his characters with irreconcilable inner tensions.
Avrom Novershtern is a Professor of Yiddish Literature at the Hebrew
University of Jerusalem. He is the director of Beth Shalom Aleichem in Tel
Aviv and a co-director of the Yiddish summer program at Tel Aviv University.
He has published widely about Yiddish literature and culture.
Introduced by Eugene Orenstein, co-chair of the Yiddish Cultural Committee.

The film, inspired by Amir Gutfreund’s novel, mixes comedy with drama as it
tells a coming-of-age story unlike any you've ever seen before.
Avi Nesher’s latest movie is an immensely pleasurable and moving film that
creates a portrait of Israel in 1968 that sheds light on the country today,
and does so without sacrificing drama to polemics.
Introduced by Bill Brownstein, Gazette columnist, CJAD and CTV broadcaster, author and critic.
Legacy for Learning Series In co-operation with the Hadassah Brandeis Institute presents:
The 1960s is popularly recalled as an era of youthful rebellion. It was also
a singularly pivotal decade in the history of the Canadian Jewish community and the Montreal community in particular. In his lecture, Harold Troper,
author of The Defining Decade: Identity, Politics and the Canadian Jewish
Community in the 1960s, will recall how events of the 1960s – the Quiet
Revolution, the election of Pierre Elliott Trudeau, the capture and trial of
Adolf Eichmann, the 1967 Six Day War and the birth of the Soviet Jewry
campaign – dramatically altered the organized Canadian Jewish community
agenda and remade what it meant to be a Jew in Canada.
Harold Troper is an author and historian at the Department of Theory and
Policy Studies at the University of Toronto. Among his acclaimed books
is the co-authored None Is Too Many: Canada and the Jews of Europe
1933-1948.
Introduced by Prof. Norman Ravvin, Chair of the Concordia Institute for
Canadian Jewish Studies.

“Conversations” – A Jewish Women’s Literary Circle
The Jewish Genealogical Society of Montreal
This “Conversation” is an intimate discussion with Dani
Shapiro, author of the memoir "Devotion"
“Jacob’s Cane”
In her spiritual detective story, Shapiro explores the varieties of experience
she has pursued – from the rituals of her black hat Orthodox Jewish relatives to yoga shalas and meditation retreats. A reckoning of the choices
she has made and the knowledge she has gained, Devotion is the story
of a woman whose search for meaning ultimately leads her home. Her
journey is at once poignant and funny, intensely personal – and completely
universal.
Dani Shapiro is the bestselling author of the memoirs Devotion and Slow
Motion and five novels. Her work has appeared in The New Yorker, Granta,
Tin House, One Story, Elle, the New York Times Book Review, the Los Angeles
Times, and has been widely anthologized. She has taught in the writing
programs at Columbia, NYU, The New School and Wesleyan University.
Books and autographs available.
Sponsored by the Helen Bassel Endowment and the Henry & Berenice
Kaufmann Foundation.

Avner Mandelman will be reading from his literary thriller The Debba, which
was long-listed for the Giller Prize. The story follows David Starkman, a
burnt-out Israeli military assassin living in Canada, as he returns to Tel Aviv
for his murdered War of Independence-hero father’s funeral. David intends
to honour his seemingly odd request to stage “The Debba”, a drama named
after a mythical Arab hyena. But as the play’s premiere date draws closer,
the violent opposition to it and to David’s investigations into the murder
intensifies – and his father’s past, the murderer’s identity, and his own destiny all may ultimately play roles in the performance of a lifetime.
Avner Mandelman is the author of two award winning story collections,
Talking to the Enemy (Oberon Press, Seven Story Press), which Tikkun
magazine said “captures the psychological and emotional contradictions
of everyday Israeli life like no other literary work in recent memory”;
and Cuckoo (Oberon Press), which the Montreal Gazette described as
“Sholom Aleichem writing Peyton Place on Speed”.
Introduced by Glen Rotchin, novelist and book reviewer.
Books and autographs available.

Famed French director Alexandre Arcady returns with an intense French
action drama. A handsome young man speeding his Audi around mountainous curves overlooking the Mediterranean; a single cufflink; a leather
bag filled with bills. The film follows the saga of a closely-knit Sephardic
family. It is about family, brotherhood, vengance and honour among Jews
from Algeria.
Five brothers, who are similar yet very different, are totally devoted to their
widowed mother. At her home, four of the brothers gather every Shabbat for
dinner. A fifth brother, long estranged from his family, breaks out of prison
and reveals a secret unbeknownst to the family. With tempting men, superb
women, action-packed adventures and sunny Marseilles – who could ask
for more?

The Max Margles Memorial Fund of the JPL presents
Rebecca Newberger Goldstein
“36 Arguments for the Existence of God: A Work of Fiction”
Faith and reason: not since the Enlightenment has the clash between
these ideals been so much on people’s minds. World events are being
shaped by fervent believers at home and abroad, while a new, aggressive
atheism is asserting itself in the public sphere. The tension between religion and doubt cannot be understood through rational argument alone,
but also must be explored from the inside – from the point of view of individual people caught in the raptures and torments of religious experience
in all their variety. And that can only be done from the insider perspective
of fiction. Rebecca Newberger Goldstein, a philosopher and novelist, is the author
of nine books. She is the recipient of many awards for both literature and
scholarship, including a MacArthur “Genius Award”.

Lecture with Shilpi Somaya Gowda
The Story Behind “Secret Daughter”
Shilpi Somaya Gowda will discuss her path to becoming an author and
the inspiration behind her debut novel, Secret Daughter, which was a
bestselling novel of 2010.
Interweaving the stories of two women, and the child that binds both
of their destinies, Secret Daughter poignantly explores the emotional
terrain of motherhood, lost identity and love, as witnessed through the
lives of two families – one Indian and one American – and the child
that indelibly connects them.
Shilpi Somaya Gowda was born and raised in Toronto to parents
who migrated there from Mumbai. She holds an MBA from Stanford
University, and a Bachelor's Degree from the University of North
Carolina at Chapel Hill. In 1991, she spent a summer as a volunteer in
an Indian orphanage, which seeded the idea for her first novel.

The Miriam Schachter Vineberg Foundation of the JPL presents
An Evening with Ariel Sabar – “Paradise Lost and Found:
How a Jewish Kid from Los Angeles Traveled to Wartime Iraq in Search of
Roots, Identity and His Father's Improbable Life Story”
Growing up in materialistic 1980s Los Angeles, Ariel Sabar wanted nothing
to do with his father. Yona Sabar was (and is) an esteemed professor at
UCLA and one of the world’s foremost experts on the ancient language of
Aramaic, but Ariel saw him as a stone-age relic, a walking fashion tragedy
who couldn’t get his clothes to match and refused to see a barber about his
out-of-control, Einstein-like hair. Then Ariel had his own son, and everything
changed. In his talk, Ariel will weave the remarkable story of the Kurdish
Jews and their Aramaic tongue with the moving tale of how a consummate
California kid came to write a book about his family’s Kurdish roots.
Ariel Sabar is an award-winning former staff writer for the Baltimore Sun,
Christian Science Monitor, and the Providence (RI) Journal.
My Father’s Paradise, his first book, won the prestigious National Book
Critics Circle Award for Autobiography, was a finalist for the Dayton Literary
Peace Prize, and won the Rodda Book Award. His new book, Heart of the
City, was released earlier this year.
Introduced by Dr. David Bensoussan, author and historian.
Books and autographs available. Sponsored by the The Miriam Schachter
Vineberg Foundation.

“Strange Bedfellows: The Private Lives of Words”
with author Howard Richler
In Strange Bedfellows, we discover that the bawdy English language has
never been overly concerned with purity. For centuries it has slept around
and been seduced by many foreign influences, indulging in promiscuous
relations that have contributed to many alluring word histories. Combining
his etymological talents with those of the muckraking journalist, Howard
Richler exposes the often louche baggage that many words have accumulated throughout the centuries.
Howard Richler is a longtime logophile who has served as a language
columnist for several newspapers and magazines. He is the author of six
books and lives in Montreal.
Introduced by Glen Rotchin, novelist and book reviewer.

“Havdala” by Shmuel Hasfari, directed by Rachelle Glait
In Hebrew with English supertitles, translated by Emmanuel Witzthum.
With brilliant staging and writing, Shmuel Hasfari’s play brings a battle
between two Jewish religious families to life. The scion of one family –
headed by a stubborn, hard working and conscientious patriarch – wants
to marry the daughter of another family helmed by a crafty, wealthy meat
importer. The families’ confrontation makes for a drama that takes on
highly-charged, serious topics, while dishing out humorous wit and barbed
opinion in equal measure.

residents join the library of their choosing. This new rebate program is only valid for libraries located on the
island of Montreal.
Please note that you must join the library of your choice first. Once you’ve joined a library, you will need to
present your proof of payment to the Community Service & Recreation office located in the Irving L. Adessky
Community Centre, along with proof of residency in order to receive your rebate. The Town will reimburse you
50% of your paid library dues up to a maximum of $50 (one rebate per family/address).

Mother Daughter Book Discussion Group
“Word Nerd” by Susin Nielsen
This compelling novel will appeal to everyone who has ever longed for acceptance or had to persevere despite overprotective parents. You will not be able
to put down this story of a loser you may not even like. A poignant account of
the difficult preteen years that also serves as a coming of age story.
Books are presently on sale at the Library ($15.00).

A Book For Your Child – Every Month, For Free!
Brought to you by the Jewish Public Library
As part of the community wide GEN J Initiative, The PJ Library® (“PJ” for
pajama) is a programme seeking to engage Jewish families in Jewish life.
Each participating child receives an age-appropriate Jewish book or CD
every month, free of charge. The aim is to help families explore core values
of Judaism and pass them on to their children. The PJ Library is a program
of the Harold Grinspoon Foundation in the United States and is funded
locally by the Marlene and Joel King Family Foundation.
“Dairy Queen” by Catherine Gilbert Murdoch
Dairy Queen will appeal to those girls who are not “girly-girls” but are learning to be comfortable being themselves. The book explores the importance
of open communication within families and between friends and what can
happen if we do not talk to one another. D.J. is a new teen role model while
the book is “as enjoyable as any treat from the real DQ”.
Books are presently on sale at the Library ($11.00).
The PJ Library books are NOW available at the
Children’s Library.
Come visit our PJ Library display where you and your child
can enjoy reading our wonderful collection
