The nose offers a drop-dead sexy array of berry, floral and mineral scents, along with nuances of spicecake and black olive. Impressively deep and sweet but also energetic, displaying dense red and dark fruit liqueur flavors and sexy floral pastille and baking spice qualities. The mineral quality comes on strong with air and lends lift and urgency to the very long, spicy finish. This is slightly more elegant than the Comte des Fous but just as potent. 2007 Clos Saint Jean Chateauneuf du Pape La Combe des Fous ($400) Inky ruby. Pungent, strongly perfumed bouquet of ripe dark berries, cherry compote, olive and floral oils. Smooth, palate-coating mulberry and kirsch flavors are complicated by candied lavender and rose qualities that gain power with aeration. The floral element dominates the very long, spicy, strikingly pure finish. This is extremely sexy now but clearly destined for a long life. 2004 Clos Saint Jean Chateauneuf du Pape Deus Ex Machina 2008 (3) ($93) Inky violet. Heady bouquet of raspberry, black cherry, lavender and fruity black pepper. Impressively concentrated and deep, with powerful, liqueur-like blackberry and cassis flavors enrobing big but supple tannins. Finishes with building sweetness and serious weight, but also with superb focus, leaving behind an impression of dark fruit essences. The yield here was reportedly 20 hectoliters per hectare. SCORE 85-89 (4) 90-94 (14) ($150) Glass-staining ruby. Explosively perfumed bouquet of fresh red and dark berries, potpourri, incense and licorice. Completely saturates the palate with sweet raspberry and boysenberry flavors, picking up anise and lavender pastille qualities with air. For a wine with this kind of palate impact there's remarkable finesse and clarity. Red berry and floral notes echo endlessly on the long, sappy finish. 2007 Clos Saint Jean Chateauneuf du Pape Vieilles Vignes ($60) Deep ruby. Black raspberry, smoky herbs and Asian spices on the nose. Suave and fine-grained, with deep flavors of raspberry, blackberry and tangy minerals. A step up in extract and power from the regular bottling, with more depth and intensity to its red and dark fruit flavors. Gains a floral quality on the back half, finishing sweet, broad and minerally, with dusty tannins and an echo of candied flowers. 96 Priced from: $575.00 Compare Prices » 95 Priced from: $500.00 Compare Prices » 95 Priced from: $139.99 Compare Prices » 95 Priced from: $175.00 Compare Prices » 93 Priced from: $65.99 Compare Prices » 95-100 (4) 2006 Clos Saint Jean Chateauneuf du Pape La Combe des Fous ($120; 60% grenache, 20% syrah, 10% cinsault and 10% vaccarese) Inky ruby. Exotically perfumed bouquet of cherry-cola, licorice, incense and cracked pepper. Sappy and round, with deep dark berry and sassafras flavors, gently chewy tannins and a late kick of black pepper. Very rich nose displays powerful cherry, cassis and blueberry aromas. Really showing the fruit today, with deep dark fruit compote flavors and a suggestion of spicecake. The finish really hangs in there. This is still a baby but possesses serious depth and potential. I called this 92(+?) on release. 2009 Clos Saint Jean Chateauneuf du Pape Deus Ex Machina Inky-purple. Sexy aromas of dark berry compote, Indian spices, cocoa powder and flowers. Then creamy and dense in the mouth, with powerful red and dark berry liqueur flavors accented by notes of spice cake and tangy minerals. Boasts lovely sweetness and clarity, finishing with outstanding clarity and length. 2004 Clos Saint Jean Chateauneuf du Pape La Combe des Fous ($77) Ruby-red. Expressive, enticingly floral aromas of raspberry, lavender and rose. Very fresh and elegantly styled, with sweet red berry flavors framed by silky tannins and accented by minerals on the long finish. This offers excellent focus and energy. 2005 Clos Saint Jean Chateauneuf du Pape Vieilles Vignes ($46) Bright ruby. Spicy red berry and kirsch aromas are deepened by black olive and pungent flowers. Creamy raspberry and blackberry flavors are gently supported by supple minerality, picking up a spicy quality on the finish. This seems livelier than the non-V.V. bottling. 93 Priced from: $169.99 Compare Prices » 93 Priced from: $300.00 Compare Prices » 92 Priced from: $250.00 Compare Prices » 92 Priced from: $58.99 Compare Prices » 91 Priced from: $49.99 Compare Prices » « Prev 1 2 3 Next » http://www.wineaccess.com/expert/tanzer/search/results.html?txt=…nt+jean&dims=4294954480&n=10&sort=rating&sort_dir=desc&stock=all Page 1 sur 1 Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar: Search Results 10/05/11 19:11 LOG OUT MY WINE PORTFOLIO MY ACCOUNT HELP Search for Wines Limit to wines available Click to remove: Chateauneuf du Pape PRICE RANGE $30 or less (1) $50 or less (9) $100 or less (15) X Search results for "clos saint jean" + Chateauneuf du Pape 22 Results Results 11-20 of 22 « Prev 1 2 3 Next » Sort by: Price | Producer Name | Vintage | Rating 2008 Clos Saint Jean Chateauneuf du Pape La Combe des Fous Bright red. A smoky note comes up on the palate, adding complexity to the sweet raspberry and cherry flavors. Finishes with impressive tangy clarity and persistence. There are around 13,000 bottles of this, compared to up to 100,000 of the normal Chateauneuf. 2009 Clos Saint Jean Chateauneuf du Pape Ruby-red. Wild, highly perfumed aromas of black and blue fruits, anise and spices. Dense and creamy but fresh, bolstered by very good energy to the blackberry, mulberry and cracked pepper flavors. Fresh citrus and apple scents, complicated by hints of smoky minerals, almond and white flowers. Racy and finely focused, with midweight lemon and green apple flavors and a late kick of lime zest. The minerality returns on the finish and lingers impressively. For a wine from the south this is delicate and precise. Muskier and more perfumed than the previous wine, displaying potent red and dark berry scents and a hint of anise. Spicy and broad, with sweet black raspberry and cherry flavors and a firm mineral spine. (Weygandt-Metzler, Unionville, PA) 2008 Clos Saint Jean Chateauneuf du Pape Deep red. Red and dark berries on the nose and in the mouth, with notes of smoke and herbs adding complexity. Sappy and spicy, augmented by good finishing clarity and excellent persistence, leaving floral and spice notes behind. This is already drinking well. 2005 Clos Saint Jean Chateauneuf du Pape (European bottling) Deep ruby. Gamey cherry and blackcurrant scents are complicated by smoked meat, licorice and dark chocolate. Chewy and sweet, with deep blackcurrant and bitter cherry flavors, and a potent olive quality on the back.
