The black/purple-colored 2005 Cornas Billes Noires is
full-bodied, rich, inky, with blueberry and blackberry fruit
intermixed with incense, acacia flower, and crushed rocks.
The tannins seem slightly softer, but this is still a big,
mouth-staining style of Cornas which should drink
handsomely for 10-15 years.
Blacker-colored and more broodingly backward, the 2006
Cornas Billes Noires exhibits a touch of toasty new oak in its
full, layered, concentrated, stunningly long personality. This
is a superb quasi-modern style of Cornas that should be
ready to drink in 2-3 years, and last for over a decade.

Proprietor Matthieu Barret is another member of Cornas’
younger generation of producers who have embraced the
use of smaller barrels as well as more sanitary vinification
techniques. The results are wines imbued with good purity,
sweeter
tannins,
appellation
typicity,
and
more
approachable styles that retain 15 or more years of aging
potential.

Drink: 2009-2024
The most concentrated, seriously structured, backward
cuvee is the 2007 Cornas Billes Noires. Displaying
enormous potential, it offers an opaque purple color along
with a perfume of graphite, pen ink, blackberries, bouquet
garni, and roasted meats. This enormously-endowed,
full-bodied, dense, chewy wine should evolve for 15 or more
years.
Even more complete is the dense purple-hued 2007 Cornas
Brise Cailloux. Sweet fig, blackberry, and scorched earth
characteristics are enticing as well as intense. Full-bodied
with layers of concentration, admirable purity, sweet tannin,
and an enticing texture result in a Cornas to enjoy over the
next 10-15 years.

An explosively rich blockbuster with an inky/purple color as
well as a glorious perfume of burning embers, blackberry
liqueur, cassis, minerals, and white flowers, this 2003
Cornas saturates the palate with glycerin, extract, and
massive layers of fruit as well as body. There is not a hard
edge to be found, although I am sure there is considerable
tannin in this amazing effort. From a producer of whom I
have no previous knowledge, this is unquestionably one of
the appellation’s “wines of the vintage.” Anticipated maturity:
2006-2015.
Surprisingly soft and approachable with silky tannins, the
2006 Cornas Les Terrasses du Serre offers copious
quantities of creme de cassis, blackberry, roasted herb,
pepper, and licorice, full body, and a lush personality. Enjoy
it over the next 7-8 years.

The 2007 Cornas Les Terrasses du Serre reveals an
impressive black/ruby color as well as a classic bouquet of
crushed rocks, flowers, blackberries, new saddle leather,
and hints of licorice and pepper. Surprisingly round and
generous with impressive concentration, this wine should
drink well for a decade.
