The Leadership Challenge Grant: Giving even more impact to Leadership donations
Le Fonds Défi des Leaders a été créé grâce à la
contribution de 20 organisations qui ont versé
chacune la somme de 50 000 $ pour un total de
1 000 000 $ afin de stimuler la participation des
donateurs Leaders. Ce fonds, qui a été versé en
totalité, vient jumeler tous les dons des nouveaux
donateurs Leaders et toute augmentation d’au moins
10 % de chaque don Leader.
Created thanks to the investment of 20 companies
that each contributed $50,000 for a total of
$1,000,000, the Leadership Challenge Grant is
designed to encourage the participation of Leader
Donors. The grant, which received full funding last
year, matches the donations of all new Leader Donors
as well as any annual increase of 10% or more in
existing Leadership donations.

Pouvez-vous imaginer que plus du quart des Grands
donateurs donnent depuis dix ans ou plus ? Plusieurs
contribuent depuis la création du Cercle des Grands
donateurs en 1997.

C’est là un fait très significatif que de pouvoir
compter sur une telle fidélité de la part des
donateurs qui versent des montants aussi
importants. Cela en dit long sur la confiance qu’ils
accordent à Centraide.
Vous en découvrirez quelques-uns dans ces pages,
qui ont accepté de parler de leurs motivations et de
leur engagement envers Centraide.
Des bénévoles dévoués
Les bénévoles ne sont pas étrangers à cela. Ce sont
eux qui rencontrent les donateurs, pour discuter de
leur engagement et les amener à se rapprocher de
Centraide et des organismes. Tout en nourrissant la
relation avec les donateurs actuels, ils amènent aussi
des dizaines de nouveaux donateurs chaque année.
Les efforts de plus de 50 bénévoles de notre cabinet
ont ainsi permis de recueillir 9,2 M$ en 2011, ce qui
représente 16 % du résultat de la campagne. Leur
réussite est visible sur bien des aspects, dont les
suivants :
• 54 donateurs se sont joints au Cercle pour une
première fois,
• 1,034 M$ de plus ont été recueillis par rapport à la
campagne précédente.

A circle of loyal donors
Can you believe that more than one quarter of Major
Donors have been giving for ten years or more?
Many of them have been members of the Major
Donors’ Circle since it was created in 1997.
Being able to count on such loyalty from donors
who contribute significant amounts is a major asset
and one that says a lot about the trust they place in
Centraide.
In these pages, you will meet some of these
benefactors who agreed to talk about their
motivation to give and their involvement with
Centraide.
Dedicated volunteers
Volunteers are no strangers to commitment. They
meet with donors to discuss their involvement and
bring them closer to Centraide and agencies. And
while developing relationships with current donors,
they also recruit dozens of new ones each year.

The work of over 50 volunteers from our cabinet
allowed Centraide to raise $9.2 M in 2011, which

is apparent on many levels, as demonstrated by the

Before serving as campaign Co-Chair in 2001, Jacques Bougie
had been a cabinet member several times and was a volunteer
with the first Major Donors Cabinet. Co-Chair of a strategic study
of issues and trends in philanthropy, which led to Centraide’s
renewed vision for “building caring communities,” he also has
been involved from the start with the Leadership rassembleur™
program for agency leaders in Centraide’s network. His view on
the importance of Centraide has not changed.

on greater responsibility when government
resources become leaner. Agencies have to
absorb a large part of these shortfalls and
their task then becomes even more complex.
We therefore need to equip them with not

their children decided to sponsor a villa in their parents’ name
at Camp Papillon, a vacation camp run by the Quebec Society
for Disabled Children. The “Maison de Grandpré” is a wonderful
tribute to the family’s philanthropic values.

Mr. Douville is currently very involved with the Séminaire

Montreal Diet Dispensary, a Centraide-supported agency,
and she saw how important this kind of funding is to
sustaining community life.

As a child, Jean-Luc Gravel saw how his father donated time
to his local church and credit union, but back then it was not
common practice to give money to charities, except to the
church itself. Mr. Gravel discovered the importance of giving
when he started his career in the financial sector. He believes
that personal accomplishment is a combination of luck and
hard work; but to be open to the importance of giving, you
need to see how luck plays a part in any successful life. He
knows that Centraide has the critical mass of donors and
agencies required to truly meet needs.

normally do not have the opportunity to take part in this

Centraide lors de la campagne 2011 en joignant le Cercle
des Leaders. La création du Fonds Défi des Leaders a
propulsé leur générosité vers de nouveaux sommets,
soit 11,2 M$. Plus de 7 300 d’entre eux ont donné entre
1 000 $ et 10 000 $, une augmentation de 6 % sur 2010.
Sans cet appui, les besoins essentiels d’un trop grand

est forte. Je comprends très bien les choix déchirants
qui se présentent devant des élus tout comme

communautaire. Le fossé qui se creuse entre nantis et
moins bien nantis n’est pas exclusif à Montréal. Plusieurs
villes de taille comparable connaissent des défis

possiblement plusieurs fois auparavant). Vous, à qui la
vie a possiblement réservé un meilleur sort. Vous, pour
qui le partage est plus qu’un mot, mais bien un geste.
Sachez que les dons que vous confiez à Centraide
contribuent à améliorer la qualité de vie et à faire
rejaillir l’espoir chez jeunes et moins jeunes, familles et
personnes seules, décrocheurs et accrochés.
Mon défi est de vous fidéliser comme donateur au
sein du Cercle des Leaders. Tous les ans, bien que
nous augmentions le nombre de donateurs Leaders,
nous en perdons aussi plusieurs centaines. Il nous faut
donc à chaque année connaître une augmentation
brute exceptionnelle pour livrer des résultats nets
en croissance. Vous comprendrez que sans cette
fuite annuelle, nous serions en mesure d’investir
des centaines de milliers de dollars additionnels qui
permettraient à Centraide de contribuer encore plus
d’oxygène dans la grande région de Montréal.

The leaders’ Circle
PRESIDENT
Thousands of donors in Greater Montreal answered
Centraide’s call during the 2011 campaign by joining
the Leaders’ Circle. The creation of the Leadership
Challenge Grant has propelled their generosity to
a new height of $11.2 M. More than 7,300 Leaders
gave between $1,000 and $10,000 for an increase
of 6% over 2010. Without this support, the essential
needs of too many of our fellow citizens would
become largely forgotten.
There is great temptation to rail against what our
governments are doing to fight poverty. I myself
understand the difficult choices that our elected
officials have to make, just as I understand the
discouragement of groups that work to provide
community aid. The gulf between the “haves” and
“have-nots” is not exclusive to Montreal. Many cities
of a comparable size face similar challenges.
Centraide plays a vital role in our society. It collects
significant funding from the Greater Montreal
region and allocates this money to agencies that
make a difference to people of all ages. It does so
without passing judgement and with empathy and
compassion.

And it could not fulfill this mission without you. You,
who have taken the time to read this message and
who contributed in 2011 (and possibly many times
before that). You, who have probably received a
better lot in life. You, who believe that sharing is not

donations you entrust to Centraide help improve the
quality of life for and bring new hope to the young
and old, to families and single people, to those
who leave school, and to those who struggle with
addiction.
My challenge is to gain your loyalty as a donor of
the Leaders’ Circle. Even though we increase the
number of Leader Donors during each campaign,
we have also lost several hundred over the years.
Which means that each year, we need to post an
exceptional gross increase to achieve net growth in
the overall campaign result. Without this annual loss,
we would be able to invest hundreds of thousands
of dollars more to allow Centraide to breathe even
more life into Greater Montreal.

Centraide du Grand Montréal assure le développement et la pérennité du fonds de dotation de la Fondation
Centraide. La Fondation a comme mission de constituer et de faire fructifier un capital important et
permanent au moyen des dons par testament, par police d’assurance-vie, par la création de fonds de dotation
et d’autres formes de dons planifiés. Les revenus générés sont versés à Centraide du Grand Montréal sur une
base annuelle.

Centraide of Greater Montreal ensures the growth and longevity of the Centraide Foundation’s endowed fund.
The mission of the Centraide of Greater Montreal Foundation is to amass and grow permanent funds from
bequests, life insurance policies, the creation of endowed funds and other forms of planned giving. All net
proceeds flow to Centraide of Greater Montreal on an annual basis.
