Short history of Sainte-Maxime
January
12°
12°
Sainte-Maxime is named after a nun who died in 750 and
who is commemorated during the Votive Festival on the
14th and 15th May each year. However, the town was
really only established on 15th February 1790 when it
was granted administrative status following the merger of
two domains, Revest to the north and Bastides de SainteMaxime et de Saint Pierre de Miramas to the south.
According to legend, there was only one house between
the present Tour Carré (built in 1520, it was subject to the
religious authority of the Abbey of Thoronet, on which
the town was dependent) and the primitive church!
During this period, Sainte-Maxime developed an
agro-pastoral and forestry vocation, followed by its
port activity, mainly based on cargo activities. Thanks
to developments in transport in the 19th century (in
particular the railway and the motor car), and thanks to
the artists who were discovering the region, SainteMaxime changed vocation to become a tourist destination.
