May 10 mai, 19:30 FASCINATION Director: Mike Hoolboom Canada 2006, 80 minutes. “My name? I thought everybody knew. My name is Art Star.” Video artist Colin Campbell died in 2001. Generous, prolific and handsome, he was a pioneer in the budding field of video art who created hilarious personae throughout his thirty-year career: Art Star, Robin, the Woman from Malibu and Colleena. He merged the worlds of performance art with video, creating an ongoing series of tapes that were witty and sly — campy takes on the mirror image of video in the age of media proliferation. He was a colleague, lover and mentor to many of the scene’s artists; and the work of artists such as Lisa Steele, John Greyson, Andrew J. Paterson and Tanya Mars would have been substantially different without his presence in their lives. It seems appropriate for Mike Hoolboom to take on the role of chronicler of Campbell’s legacy. A longtime champion of fringe filmmaking, but also an outsider to the video art milieu, Hoolboom brings his unique perspective to bear on his portrait of Colin Campbell. For Hoolboom, Campbell’s death also coincides with the passing of an era, when the image itself is imploding. We are in an era of mourning pictures, when media and death can only represent what is lost. Fascination contains interviews and cameos with dozens of Canadian artists whose paths crossed with Campbell’s. Combined with his customary use of appropriated footage and subjective voice-over, Hoolboom presents us with a deeply affecting biography of a fallen star. April 13 avril, 21:00 SEVEN AND A HALF Director: Miroslav Momcilovic • Serbia 2005, 110 minutes. The Deadly Sins have been the subject of cinema before, in thrillers (Se7en David Fincher, 1995) and comedy (The Magnificent Seven Deadly Sins Graham Stark, 1971), here Miroslav Momcilovic’s treatment of the subject combines drama and comedy in a superb summation of society in modern Serbia. The film presents seven stories, each representing a deadly sin, which seem to take place in the same neighbourhood of Belgrade. Main characters from one film will make a small appearance in another, and so the whole gives the sense of a living, breathing place. The stories eventually combine in a final scene of great emotion, full of pain, yet hope for the future. English sub-titles. Sat./sam. TIMES AND WINDS is a finely etched portrait of remote village life in Turkey composed of small, meticulously observed moments of great beauty, melancholy and lyricism. Reha Erdem’s latest feature is about the bumpy emotional lives of three preteen friends, Ömer, Yakup and Yildiz, and the ways their families curb their dreams and desires as surely as the mountains and the sea confine their isolated village. Within vast cinemascope compositions, Erdem captures his troubled young protagonists posed against the sublime landscape, a deeply affecting motif that subtly conveys so much, so poignantly. Times and Winds is a small miracle: an intensely meditative film about young people’s inner worlds. English sub-titles. Fri./ven. April 13 avril, 19:00 DAYS AND HOURS Director: Pjer Zalica • Republic of Bosnia and Herzegovina 2004, 96 minutes. Fuke pays a visit to his Uncle Idriz and Aunt Sabira to fix their hot water heater. As he sits down with them for a cup of coffee, he endures a painful, awkward silence: his aunt and uncle are consumed with their own grief over the loss of their son in the war. When he discovers that his old, beat-up Volkswagen has a flat tire, Fuke is faced with the unpleasant prospect of spending the night with his aunt and uncle. During the long night, he becomes aware of long-held grudges that are driving a wedge between the couple, serving to deepen their loneliness. Fuke realizes it is up to him to bring about their reconciliation, and the household appliance mechanic turns his hand to engineering human happiness. Brilliant. English sub-titles. HOLD ME, directed by Lucia Rikaki, was conceived on the Internet and developed gradually into a multi-genre, pseudo-documentary fairy tale. The story of a woman from a broken home, Julie searches for tenderness in her life, and finds nothing but mistrust and fear. At age 33, Julie, now a radio presenter, creates a website inviting people to share stories of loss. As people respond, Julie begins meeting them, and enters a world of emotions and dreams. The film uses real stories narrated by real people to set the stage for Julie’s continuing search for love and meaning. English sub-titles. Sat./sam. April 14 avril, 21:00 Albania TBA. Sun./dim. April 15 avril, 19:00 INVESTIGATION Director: Igilka Trifonova • Bulgaria 2006, 95 minutes. Parts of a corpse have been found and a suspect, Plamen, brother of the murdered man, is detained. He denies any charges and for want of conclusive evidence, the investigation is about to be suspended. A new investigator is appointed, Alexandra, and starts everything from scratch. By day she interrogates relatives, friends and colleagues of the two brothers and at night she questions the suspect. Solitude has become her only companion and begins to compensate by working longer hours. Loneliness is also eating up Plamen, who starts cherishing his encounters with the investigator for the chance to talk to her. The film follows the course of the investigation through the filter of its main subject: possible or impossible human communication. English sub-titles. March 30 mars, 19:00 JEWS IN SPACE OR WHY IS THIS NIGHT DIFFERENT FROM ALL THE OTHER NIGHTS? Director: Gabriel Lichtmann • Argentina 2005, 89 minutes SPACE, by Gabriel Lichtmann, is a brilliant and unconventional comedy that captures the eclectic realities of a Jewish family in contemporary Argentina. Set in Buenos Aires, it portrays the dynamic impact family reunions, such as Passover, can have on certain members of the family. Characters include three jealous sisters, a suicidal grandfather, a kleptomaniac niece, and Santiago, who is in love with his own cousin. SPACE offers an array of peculiar yet comical scenarios that leave us questioning our own family values and give new meaning to the traditional Passover question, “Why is this night different from all the other nights?” English sub-titles. Sat./sam. March 31 mars, 19:00 THE GREATEST LOVE OF ALL Director: Carlos Diegues • Brazil 2006, 106 minutes. A lonely bachelor, Antonio is a famous and successful Brazilian astrophysicist who has spent most of his adult life in the United States. When he is 55, he discovers that he has a fatal brain tumor and decides to return to his native land to receive a last official tribute. While in Rio de Janeiro, Antonio goes to an old age home to visit his adoptive father. On learning that Antonio is soon to die the father confesses he knows who Antonio’s biological mother was and gives him a few clues about his birth. Antonio follows the clues to the Rio de Janeiro lowlands, where his real mother is said to have lived and died. There he meets Zezé, the best friend of his deceased mother, and learns he was born on the day when Brazil lost the World Cup to Uruguay at the Maracana Stadium. The past is opening up To Antonio, but will he die before he learns the truth? English sub-titles. Sun./dim. April 1 avril, 19:00 CACHIMBA Director: Silvio Caiozzi • Chile 2004, 127 minutes. This comedy is full of the misadventures of Marcos, an insignificant middle-aged banker torn between his love of art and his almost obsessive thoughts about his plump girlfriend Hilda. In his attempt to materialize this dream, Marcos convinces her to go with him to a mid-winter weekend getaway to a desolate beach resort. Atop an oceanfront hill, he discovers the meaning to his existence. Master Chilean filmmaker Silvio Caiozzi’s latest work is a sophisticated comedy about art and love, and also the love of art, but not necessarily in that order. English sub-titles. Mon./lun. April 2 avril, 19:00 HISTORY OF THE PINK TRUNK Director: Libia Stella Gomez • Colombia 2005, 97 minutes. An ambitious period piece, set in 1940’s Bogata, THE HISTORY OF THE PINK TRUNK recounts the true crime/history of a woman who was found dead in a trunk at a train station in Bogata. The case is assigned to detective Corzo who is constantly met with resistance from yellow journalist Mosquera. There is something mysterious about the case and the unidentified dead girl, as it seems Mosquera is trying to sabotage the solving of the crime at every turn. He publishes a false account of the colour of the trunk the girl was found in, claiming it was pink when in fact it was brown and wooden. With the help of a bartender, Corzo will be led down a strange path toward the identity of the girl and reason behind her murder. English sub-titles. Tues./mardi. April 3 avril, 19:00 VIVA CUBA Director: Juan Carlos Cremata Malberti • Cuba 2005, 80 minutes. In a tale akin to “Romeo and Juliet,” the friendship between two children is threatened by their parents’ differences. Malú is from an upper-class family and her single mother does not want her to play with Jorgito, as she thinks his background coarse and commonplace. Jorgito’s mother, a poor socialist proud of her family’s social standing, places similar restrictions on her son. What neither woman recognizes is the immense strength of the bond between Malú and Jorgito. VIVA CUBA is a wonderful, fresh film for all ages. Cuba is a nation in flux and, while his approach is skilled and affectionate, Cremata Malberti does not shy away from asking difficult questions. English sub-titles. Wed./mer. April 4 avril, 19:00 DUCK SEASON Director: Fernando Eimbcke • Mexico 2004, 87 minutes LE(S) CINÉMA(S) DE L’AUTEUR-PROVOCATEUR ROBERT MORIN Depuis que le vidéaste et cinéaste montréalais Robert Morin est monté sur le plateau à titre de membre fondateur de la Coopérative vidéoscopique en 1977, il étudie l’interface croissante entre la vidéo et les formes plus habituelles de cinéma. Son oeuvre explore en effet les riches et denses intersections politiques, culturelles et esthétiques du film et de la vidéo. Devant l’usage croissant de la vidéo et de la technologie numérique des images en mouvement, ses films et vidéos constituent non seulement des explorations pionnières de nouvelles possibilités de production pour les réalisateurs canadiens indépendants, mais aussi des examens probants d’une société changée par ces nouvelles technologies de la représentation cinétique. Il est temps plus que jamais d’évaluer rétrospectivement les multiples dimensions des contributions de Robert Morin à la fabrication d’images au Canada. Robert Morin sera présent à la soirée inaugurale de la rétrospective pour présenter ses oeuvres et en discuter. AUTEUR-PROVOCATEUR: THE CINEMA(S) OF ROBERT MORIN Since his arrival on the scene as a founding member of Cooperative Videoscopique in 1977, Montreal video and film artist Robert Morin has been investigating the increasing interface between video art and more traditional forms of cinema. Indeed, his work explores the rich and densely packed political, cultural, and aesthetic intersections of film and video. Given the increased use of the video and digital moving image technology, the films/videos of Robert Morin constitute not only pioneering explorations of new production possibilities for Canadian independent filmmaking, but also compelling examinations of the society being changed by new moving image technologies of representation. Now more than ever it is time for a retrospective assessment of the many dimensions of Robert Morin’s contributions to Canadian independent imagemaking. QUE DIEU BENISSE L’AMERIQUE Le 11 septembre 2001, en banlieu de Montréal, Pierre St-Roch, un prédateur sexuel libéré la veille, est interdit chez lui par son épouse à qui clame son innocence. Il doit aussi affronter le jugement silencieux des ses voisins qui connaissent ses démêlés avec la justice grâce à une liste qui circule illégalement et qui répertorie les prédateurs sexuels habitant dans le secteur. Enfin, pour ajouter à sa tragédie, trois des cinq prédateurs listés ont été assassinés et mutilés par un justicier désaxé. Directed by renowned Quebec filmmaker Robert Morin, L’AMERIQUE is a poignant exploration of modern human relationships. Set on September 11, 2001, in a suburb of Laval, Quebec, the plot centres on a collection of isolated neighbours whose fates become intertwined. As a police officer and his partner hunt a serial killer who is murdering sexual predators, a variety of ordinary and not-so-ordinary lives connect, and community secrets are revealed. Morin’s darkly satirical approach to suburbia is reminiscent of Sam Mendes’AMERICAN BEAUTY, but with a distinctly Quebecois flair. Though the film addresses many serious themes, from crime and punishment to paranoia and prejudice, Morin approaches all his characters with a genuine sense of compassion. Ultimately, the film is a plea for acceptance and understanding in a post-9/11 age of hatred and fear. English sub-titles. Sat./sam. May 12 mai, 21:00 PETIT POW POW NOËL Réalisateur : Robert Morin • Canada 2005, 91 minutes. PETIT POW POW NOËL est l’histoire d’un homme qui rend visite à son père à la Noël avec l’intention de le faire souffrir et peut-être mourir pour crimes contre sa famille. L’attrappe est que, peu importe les douleurs que la torture (psychologique ou autre) peut infliger au vieux salaud, c’est peu de choses en comparaison de la douleur et de l’humiliation quotidiennes de devoir être nourri, lavé et changé. Bien que le protagoniste soit motivé par la haine, la perte évidente de dignité humaine exposée dans ce film en fait un plaidoyer frappant pour l’euthanasie. PETIT POW! POW NOËL is the story of a man who visits his dad on Christmas with the intent of making him suffer and eventually die for his crimes against his family. The catch is that whatever torture (psychological or otherwise) he inflicts on the old bastard, it pales in comparison with the daily pain and humiliation of having to be fed, washed and get your diapers changed. Even though the protagonist is motivated by hatred, the evident loss of human dignity on display makes a striking pro-euthanasia case. LE NÈG LE NÈG est un film énergique, inventif et difficile sur le racisme au Canada français. Pour Robert Morin, il a été difficile mais nécessaire de faire ce film, car les critiques de sa propre société sont toujours les plus vigoureuses. Des sections fantastiques s’entremêlent à une réalité laide et rurale, et étonnamment, s’y intègrent. LE NÈG is a forceful, inventive, difficult film about racism in French Canada. Not an easy film for Robert Morin to make, yet necessary because critiques about one’s own society are always the strongest. Fantastical segments intertwine with ugly, rural reality and, quite surprisingly, gel together. English sub-titles. Flama and Moko are fourteen years old; they have been best friends since they were kids. They have everything they need to survive yet another boring Sunday: an apartment without parents, videogames, porn magazines, soft drinks and pizza delivery. The electricity company, Rita, the neighbor, Ulises, a pizza deliveryman, eleven seconds, the Real Madrid-Manchester game, some chocolate brownies and a horrible painting of ducks, all combine to break the harmony of what promised to be a placid Sunday, and reveal issues such as the parents’ divorce, loneliness, the confusion between adolescent love and friendship, as well as frustration in adult life. Anzola • Venezuela 2005, 95 minutes. 1888: THE EXTRAORDINARY VOYAGE OF THE SANTA ISABEL is a whimsical adventure fantasy about a tired Jules Verne, fleeing from Paris and a bored wife, who joins Italian explorer Stradelli in an expedition on the Orinoco river. Along the way they pickup a young stranger- a woman disguised as a man, searching for her lost father. Selected as the official Venezuelan entry to the 2005 Academy Awards, in the Best Foreign Film category. English sub-titles Thurs./jeudi. April 5 avril, 19:00 14 Days In Paradise Director: Bill Marks • Uruguay-Canada 2007, 87 minutes. Ten years ago, Alex Johnson was on top of the world as the most popular member of a famous boy-band. These days however, Alex’s star doesn’t shine so high or so bright and while his career falls apart, the only thing holding him together is his up-coming marriage to Verónica, a Uruguayan beauty queen. But when Alex and his parents, Al and Barbara, travel to his winter home in beautiful Punta del Este, things fall apart in a very bad way when Al winds up in bed with Verónica. A charming, madcap comedy about cold hearts in the heat of Uruguayan sun, PARADISE is two weeks you’ll never forget. English sub-titles Filmmakers will be present at the screening. Clearly inspired by the violent land dispute at Oka that shook up Quebec in the summer of 1990, Montreal helmer Robert Morin’s “Windigo” is an intelligent, thought-provoking look at the strained relations between white Canadians and Canada’s Native peoples. Rappelant Rashomon, REQUIEM raconte la cavale d’un condamné pour meurtre. Il faut un certain temps pour se faire à cette histoire futée, qui fait mouche par une conclusion forte et subtile. Le jeu puissant de Gildor Roy donne encore plus de mordant. Reminiscent of RASHOMON, REQUIEUM deals with a convicted murderer on the run after escaping from prison. We are pleased to present a recently struck scope print of the full-length version of Andrei Tarkovsky’s monumental masterpiece, almost a full hour longer than the original release.
