Page 7 Morin, Alexandre J.S. Research Contributions Most of my research is centred on the development and psychosocial determinants of self-concept and commitments, over the lifespan. Although I have ventured in other areas of research, following rich collaborative opportunities involving substantive experts to apply new methodological tools to the study of research questions of practical significance in their areas, self-concept, commitments, and related constructs have been at the core of my research involving my long-term collaborators (e.g. Maïano, Marsh). Multidimensional Self-Concepts and Related Constructs Questionnaires and tests development To start a research career in Quebec (and in France, given my collaborations), with access to mostly French-speaking research participants, creates a considerable challenge to scholars interested in using psychometrically sound short instruments. Indeed, very few such instruments are currently available in many fields of psychological research, especially when one wants to target youth with intellectual disabilities (ID), a main focus of some of our recent work and grants in this area. This led me (in collaboration with my colleague Maïano) to embark on the process of validating multiple measurement instruments. Our strongest contribution to this field has been the validation of short French questionnaires assessing self-concepts, physical self-concepts or related constructs (socialphysique anxiety, depression, fear of negative appearance evaluation, eating disorders) for adolescents. I contributed to similar psychometric developments (with collaborator Boudrias) on the assessment of commitments, psychological empowerment, and related constructs for adult populations. Validating these instruments was never our endpoint but rather the first step of a long term research program in which we plan to use them to longitudinally study human development (we already received funding to start a long-term longitudinal follow-up study of youth with ID in Canada and a plitot study in Australia, and have submitted a more substantial ARC Dicovery project in this area). I must say that I am particularly proud of these instruments. For instance, the quality of these instruments is illustrated by the fact that most of them are published in top-tier English Journals (e.g. Research in Developmental Disabilities, Psychology of Sport and Exercise, Body Image, Journal of Affective Disorders, Journal of Abnormal Child Psychology, Journal of Attention Disorders). These instruments are also all publically available, as we always fully disclose the French and English items directly in the journal articles, making them accessible to the worldwide scientific community. Among these instruments, our main contribution is clearly the development and validations of the Physical Self-Inventory (PSI) short (18 items) and very short (12 items) forms that were the object of three publications based on typically developing youth and two additional publications presenting an adaptation to youth with intellectual disabilities in two additional publications. This adaptation of the PSI (and other instruments) to youth with intellectual disabilities represents a significant breakthrough in an area where deficit models have long prevailed, as well as the erroneous belief that it was impossible to reliably assess through self-reports of internal states amongst youth with intellectual disabilities, given their limited cognitive – and introspective – resources. Collaborator Marsh (Marsh, Tracey, and Craven, 2006) proved this claim to be wrong in a study using an interview-based administration of their instruments. Our own work provided the first illustration that this was also possible through classical group-administered self-reports questionnaires by capitalising on new advances in psychological theory, research, and measurement. Apart from having generated numerous requests for the use of many instruments described in this section (which are included in data collections conducted in France, Italy, Belgium-Flemish version, China, Hong Kong, and the Middle East), these instruments also represent the shortest measures of physical self-conceptions available today and were the sole non-English language instruments to be included in a recent chapter by Marsh & Cheng (2011) who noted that the PSI “make a potentially important contribution to applied research”. Interestingly, Marsh (now a close collaborator), wrote this chapter before we formally started our collaborative research. Recently, we even published an Italian version of the PSI that emerged from the contacts generated by this research (Scalas et al., 2013, accepted). Page 8 Morin, Alexandre J.S. A longitudinal/developmental perspective Advanced longitudinal analyses (including longitudinal profiles) of developmental data related to self-concept and associated constructs clearly represent my main area of substantive and methodological expertise. Starting from my doctoral thesis, based on a longitudinal follow-up study of over 1000 adolescents that I planned and coordinated, longitudinal analyses have always been a main focus of my research. My doctoral thesis was centred on the influence of school life on depression development in adolescence and the findings emphasised the centrality of self-concept in explaining the emergence of depression, gender-related differences in depression, and the impact of other factors on depression development. A desire to explore these results led to one of my most important contributions to this field of research (Morin, Maïano, Marsh et al., 2011). In this publication, I proposed an improved state-trait conception of self-concept evolution over time and found support for a three way interaction between gender, puberty, and ethnicity in the prediction of body image. This last result shows that widely-cited, negative effects of pubertal development are mostly limited to Caucasian females and disappeared over time, whereas the same changes were beneficial for all males and for females from ethnic minority groups. This result is particularly ground-breaking since such a three-way interaction was hypothesised by many but never formally tested. The impact of this manuscript is evidenced by the multiple contacts I have had as a result of its publication (approximately 15 per year). In this manuscript, we also provide another illustration of the inappropriate character of the classical Storm and Stress theory of adolescence in showing that overall, youth’s trajectories of self-concepts remain elevated over the course of adolescence. This worried me since it conveyed the false impression that all is going well for everybody. In fact, this result is simply an average result, which represents a known-limitation of person-centred analyses. From previous groundbreaking work on longitudinal profiles of depression (Brendgen et al., 2005), anxiety (Morin, Maïano, Nagengast et al., 2011), and academic achievement (Morin, Rodriguez et al., 2012) I was already wondering what longitudinal profiles of self-concept trajectories would look like. Indeed, in these publications, some of the more problematic trajectories showed a very high degree of developmental instability, suggesting that they may have been due to reactive, or unbalanced, self-concepts. We directly pursued and confirmed this hypothesis in another manuscript (Morin et al., 2013, Child Development) on longitudinal profiles of global self-esteem in which we proposed, tested, and confirmed a newly developed self-equilibrium hypothesis (which merges research on self-etseem strength and stability into a single overarching framework and that is the object of a recent Future Fellowship proposal). With collaborator Marsh (Marsh, Lüdtke et al., 2009) we also previously published the first latent profile analysis of academic self-conceptions and found results showing that the presence of a core strong self-concept coupled with diversified areas of positive self-concepts represent significant predictors of important academic outcomes. Commitments in the Workplace A significant part of my research is influenced by my training in organisational psychology. In this area, my main research program is based on commitment (usually as a multifocal and multidimensional construct very close to self-concepts), its predictors, and its outcomes. Mainstream publications on commitment focused on Meyer’s (one of the host collaborators of this proposal) three-component model, which distinguishes three mindsets underlying commitments: affective, normative, and continuance. My research focuses on the affective mindset, the closest to self-concept and intrinsic motivation, and extended Meyer’s in proposing a multifocal perspective on affective commitments. Generally, commitment research focuses on commitments to the organisation, one’s job, or organisational changes. Some other research considers additional foci of commitment (colleagues, supervisor, customers, etc.), but seldom integrate more than 2 or 3 foci in the same research. We thus developed the Workplace Affective Commitment Multidimensional Questionnaire (Morin et al., 2009), a questionnaire covering a total of 8 foci of commitment, which has since been extended to two new foci. In a second study, we showed that this multifoci perspective substantially improved the prediction of isomorphic outcomes (Morin, Vandenberghe, et al., 2011). We also showed how a multifoci perspective of commitment was naturally suited to the adoption of a person-, versus variable-, centred perspective (Morin, Morizot et al., 2011). This study is already influencing Page 9 Morin, Alexandre J.S. other researchers to adopt a person-centred perspective (e.g. Meyer et al., 2013). Then, we challenged the main assumptions of commitment research and theory by showing the potential risks of overcommitment (Morin, Vandenberghe, et al., 2013, in press). Recognition for my research in this area is apparent from the reviews I have been asked to conduct, and from collaborations with Vandenberghe (published) and Meyer (currently under review after a decision to revise-resubmit), two of the most influential researchers in this area. Interestingly, an upcoming paper (Kam, Morin, Meyer, et al.) validates Meyer’s (e.g. Meyer et al., 2013) proposal on the nature of commitment profiles, but also challenges common assumptions regarding the situational nature of commitments by showing the almost complete longitudinal stability of commitment profiles over an 8 month period in the context of organisational changes. Substantive Methodological Synergies Marsh and Hau (2007) and Borsboom (2006) emphasised the need for substantive-methodological synergies (SMS) in psychological research. Substantive-methodological synergies represent joint ventures in which new methodological developments are applied to substantively important issues. We live in exciting times of fast-paced innovation in quantitative methods. This creates new research opportunities: methodological innovations enable researchers to penetrate previously inaccessible research problems, revisit classic unresolved issues, and address new research issues. However, this also creates concerns for substantive researchers who fail to keep pace with new methodological developments. As pointed out by Marsh and Hau (2007): (a) some of the best methodological research is based on the development of creative methodological solutions to problems that stem from substantive research; (b) new methodologies provide important new approaches to current substantive issues; and (c) substantive-methodological synergies are particularly important in applied areas. The converse is also likely: researchers with strong methodological skills might lose touch with the need to present statistical tools in ways that have practical and theoretical significance. Substantive-methodological synergies are also useful in demonstrating the practical advantages of statistical innovations to substantive research and to present those innovations in a clear and replicable way to applied researchers who might lack the formal mathematical training necessary to be able to dig into statistical papers. A significant part of my research is anchored into a substantivemethodological synergy framework. Coming from a psychological (rather than statistical) background, I am acutely aware of the challenge statistical developments represent for applied scholars. Many of my publications thus present among the first illustrations of statistical innovations to specific substantive domains: (a) multiple-group invariance tests for ordered-categorical items (Morin, Madore, Morizot et al., 2009), including applications to higher-order (Morin, Moullec et al., 2011) and bifactor (Caci et al., 2013, in press) models; (b) verification of the potential non-linearity (curvilinearity) of the relationships between workplace affective commitment and burnout - can we be too committed? (Morin, Vandenberghe et al., 2013, in press); (c) factor mixture analyses of workplace affective commitment (Morin, Morizot et al., 2011) or latent profile analyses of self-concept (Marsh, Lüdtke et al., 2009); (d) conditional autoregressive latent trajectories analyses of adolescent selfconcept trajectories (Morin, Maïano, Marsh et al., 2011); (e) the first application of latent class growth analyses to depression research (Brendgen et al., 2005) as well as many more recent papers presenting innovative applications of more complex growth mixture analyses (see next section); (f) one review paper challenging many assumptions commonly made in studies of school contextual and climate effects through the presentation of newly developed doubly latent multilevel models (Marsh et al., 2012), as well as a more pedagogical tutorial-like illustration of these models (Morin, Marsh, et al., 2013, accepted). In addition, I had the chance of being involved in the development and first illustrations of a new statistical method, Exploratory Structural Equation Modeling (ESEM) through a series 8 papers and 1 first-authored introductory chapter. These papers present the first applications of this method, and the first of them (Marsh et al., 2009) appeared in a “special” issue of Structural Equation Modeling as a joint venture with the Asparouhov and Muthén paper that presented the mathematical specifications of ESEM. We have recently (Marsh, Morin et al.) been invited to prepare a new paper presenting ESEM for the Annual Review of Clinical Psychology. Page 10 Morin, Alexandre J.S. Methodological field of research: Mixture and growth mixture profile analyses Apart from psychometric and longitudinal analyses, one of my specific field of statistical expertise is related to profile (mixture and growth mixture) analyses. I have contributed to developments in research methodology in relation to mixture analyses as is evidenced by multiple publications. This specific area of statistical expertise is also the main reason for all of the recent conferences that I was invited to present to for research groups around the world (Sydney, Oxford), was central to my (Marseille, Sydney, and Cagliari) external stays as an invited professor, is related to most of the contacts and requests for help that I have now on a weekly basis, is linked to at least 50% of my contributions to the SEMNET network, and explains many requests I get in acting as a reviewer from prestigious journals. Thus, mixture modelling (and making these models accessible to applied researchers) likely represents my most important contribution to research methodology. I have been exploring various extensions of person-centred mixture models for some years now. Throughout this process, two methodological issues have been of particular interest to my work. First, with crosssectional profiles based on multiple dimensions, one important issue is the need to obtain profiles differing from one another regarding shape (the tendency for a person to have a distinct pattern of factors on which they are high, medium or low), rather than level (the tendency for a person to be high, medium or low across all factors in the profile). However, strong level effects are sometimes linked to the presence of a strong common core to the dimensions being considered, such as a general tendency to commit (Morin, Morizot et al., 2011), global level competencies across dimensions of work performance (Morin & Marsh, submitted), or a strong core self-concept (Marsh et al., 2009). In this regard, we first proposed (Marsh et al., 2009) different ways to represent this level effect. Then, we proposed factor mixture models as a way to extract level effects to obtain cleaner profiles representing a person’s particular pattern of strengths and weaknesses across domains, irrespective of global levels of competencies (Morin, Morizot et al., 2011). We pursued this issue in a recent paper contrasting alternative ways of achieving similar results (Morin & Marsh, submitted). These methods will be at the core of tests of the self-complexity extension of my self-equilibrium hypothesis where time-specific profiles of self-concepts across multiple domains will be extracted net of the “strong core self” effects before being associated with the self-equilibrium trajectories of global self-esteem. Second, the issue of looking at state-trait components of developmental trajectories has always been at the forefront of my methodological interests, starting from a variable-centred study (Morin, Maïano, Marsh et al., 2011). However, this approach is limited by its reliance on average relationships without considering specific profiles of participants, something made possible by the growth mixture models central to this proposal. However, mainstream applications of growth mixture models assume either the absence of within-group variability (i.e. assuming that each individual in a profile has the exact same trajectory) or that within-group variability remains the same across profiles. We showed that these methods tend to yield biased results and that these implicit assumptions may not hold in real-life scenarios (Morin, Maïano, Nagengast et al., 2011). We then explored the estimation of fully variant growth mixture models where the time-specific residuals (i.e. the state component) were also allowed to vary across profiles. This allowed us to estimate profiles differing from one another on both levels (trait) and fluctuations (state); a method which resulted in a 35% increase in the prediction of the outcomes (smoking initiation in that case) when compared to variable centred methods (Morin, Rodriguez et al., 2012). We further extended these models by also allowing the shape of the trajectories to differ across profiles in order to better locate the presence of trajectories illustrative of a developmental switch from one profile to another other in the context of the initial self-equilibrium hypothesis (Morin, Maïano et al., 2013).
