in style and content
The editorial team is delighted with the
high volume of uniformly positive responses
to the new look of Security Update. We
have already incorporated some of your
suggestions in this issue. For example, the
magazine now comes in two editions.
One is still the same as ever, but does not
include articles in English, while the
other is published in English only. In this
issue, you will find an order form for either
or both editions – whichever you prefer.
Another innovation is a contact address
for further information, at the end of most
articles.
In the spirit of the European football
championship and the year of the Olympic
Games, this issue will be of particular
interest to fans of sports and technology.
Our coverage of bionics also examines
exciting new links between nature and technology.

calls for high-performance
Jakob Gilgen
Studies indicate that in 2025, two
thirds of the world’s population will be
living in cities; 300 cities will have
at least 1 million inhabitants, and 100
mega-cities will have populations in
excess of five million.
Mass transit is gaining in
importance as a way
to meet the demand for
mobility. Kaba is well
positioned in this growth
market, with the platform screen door
products from Kaba Gilgen.
security update (su) Mr. Gilgen,
how do you see the future potential
of your new top-selling product,
platform screen doors?
Des moyens
de transport plus
éfficaces
En l’an 2025,
il y aura 300 villes
avec plus d’un
million d’habitants.
Les moyens de
transport de masse
revêtent ainsi de
plus en plus d’importance. Kaba s’est
bien positionné
dans ce marché en
croissance avec
Platform Screen
Doors.
4
JG As populations grow, so do
the demands imposed on urban
transportation systems. The operational capacity of existing transportation systems must be
increased, and new urban districts
must be linked to existing networks.
With its platform screen doors,
Kaba is supplying an essential part
needed for meeting these future
demands – worldwide.
su How can automatic doors
increase the efficiency of something
like a subway system?
JG The simplest way to define
efficiency in a transportation
system is to calculate the number
of people that can be moved per
unit of time. Thus, the faster subway trains can move, the more
quickly they will get to the next station. Above all, the more efficiently passengers can get in and out of
the cars, the more people can be
transported per unit of time. If platform screen doors separate the
track area from the platform, trains
can enter stations at a higher
speed. The doors prevent the wind
pressure that builds up ahead of
the train from blowing dust and dirt
into the eyes of the people waiting
on the platform. The people are
in precisely the right place, waiting
behind an elegant glass wall. So
platform screen doors increase the
efficiency of a transportation system
even as they promote passenger
safety. They also prevent people
from falling onto the tracks.
Of course, many cities with a million
or more inhabitants are located in
hot regions, or in areas where there
are temperature extremes between
winter and summer. So air conditioning in train stations and trains
will be even more important in
the future. Only if platforms, subway
tunnels, and trains are efficiently
The
future
and safe means of transportation
separated by zone can they be
heated or cooled cost-effectively.
That’s another good reason for
using Kaba Gilgen platform screen
doors.
Intensive tests of the platform screen
doors and its mechanism are taking
place prior to the installations.
su Are these platform screen
doors for use only in subways?
JG Not at all. Let’s just compare
airline and train traffic for a
moment: While there does seem to
be limitless open space above
the clouds, the skies will become
more crowded with air traffic
as time goes on. For medium hauls,
high-speed trains provide a comfortable alternative. Although airline
passengers today generally walk
down enclosed passageways to
reach the terminal from the plane,
train passengers still have to
stand out on the platforms in the
wind and weather. That has to
change. I’m looking forward to a
time when people can wait for
trains in comfort and safety, even
in traditional train stations.

The human corporation
employs some 98 trillion
workers – that’s how many
cells work in co-operation
in a healthy body – a gigantic conglomerate with
smoothly functioning control
systems. It stands as an
ideal for every boss who
wants to manage and lead
his company efficiently, or
for security management
facing the task of constructing a comprehensive
security solution.
6
Bionik
Learning from nature
The Kaba exos central access,
time, and production data collection
software controls complex data
and reaction processes, just like the
ones that take place in the human
body. Personnel and production
data are collected according to specific tasks in a decentralized
system, stored locally or centrally,
recorded, and processed, so
that certain processes, such as the
continuous calculation of time balances in human resources management, for example, take place
accurately and under the apparent
control of “invisible intelligence”.
Nature is efficient
When nature’s cycles are copied
and applied to business environments, it means cost minimisation
and profit maximisation. For
example, the field of bionics is
exploring the operating and control
mechanisms of the glandular
system that controls vital functions
in the body through secretions.
From a detailed knowledge of how
this system works, the field aims
to improve processes in large businesses. According to the Institute
for Bionics in Schwabhausen (Germany), small and medium sized
enterprises can already learn a lot
from simpler life forms – from
observing, for example, how aggregations of individual amoebas
form, which can then accumulate,
ultimately forming a slime mold.
This is a model of self-organization
according to which groups and
entire business units can be created
from single individuals. Organizational aids, such as Kaba security
components, must be as flexible to
change as the organizational structures themselves. Through a skilful
combination of mechanics and
electronics, modern security plans
must be readily adaptable to meet
changing needs, without requiring
great effort or expense.
The localization of physical and
chemical stimuli within the human
body (as with diabetes, for example), as well as their position
and orientation in the environment
are of increasing relevance as
a branch of bionics, called sensor
bionics. Range measurement via
sonar impulses, for example,
is an area that makes many routine
applications easier. From differences in the run time or Doppler
shifts of ultrasonic signals, bats calculate the distance of objects in
their surroundings, including those
of flying insect prey. Now that
integrated circuits can handle the
data calculations, this “bat principle” is being used increasingly for
distance measurement, for
example to determine the distance
between a car’s bumper and the
wall in a garage, or as a replacement for the conventional yardstick
(infrared or laser distance measuring devices).
Artificial muscles
For years, Bielefeld neurobiologist Holk Cruse studied the running
movements of the grasshopper
before the first running machines
were developed in the mid-1990s.
The basic thinking is that, in
nature, a separate nerve network
controls each leg. Within this
network there are autonomous circuits that apparently monitor
every kind of movement of the
individual joint independently.
Adjacent legs trade information.
Grasshoppers leap over obstacles
and, even if they stumble, they
always get back on their feet. They
can cope with uneven terrain
thanks to local positive feedback
the instant a leg touches the
ground. Each joint calculates its
own passive movement via
sensors, and actively tracks it until
it is converted from a shockabsorbing movement to a push-off
movement. Artificial running
machines are not yet as adroit and
surefooted as grasshoppers.
But Cruse’s ungainly six-legged
robots can already be used as pipe
cleaners in sewer systems. Their
American siblings have recently
been fitted with pneumatically operated tubes that contract when
they are inflated. The long-term
goal is to develop artificial muscles.
Kaba Gilgen opted to imitate
nature as well, in making improvements to conventional gate
drives: The highly efficient energy
transfer that takes place in the door
closer is quite similar to the lever
action that gives delicate insects
leveraged strength.

A thousand
and one cranes
First, down with the old, then a wave of renovation and
construction. Tearing down the Berlin Wall was the easy
part. For a while, unity ruled in Berlin and people embraced.
Then, however came a split within the cultural elite over
architectural details of the old, yet new capital.
Despite this, the work of the
urban planners, international
investors, and construction workers has truly achieved millennial
impact. The buildings that have
taken shape in the skyline over the
Potsdamer Platz have put down
real roots in the heart of the city.
The former cultural, social, and
architectural focus of the German
capital is breathing new life into
old traditions, with a strong
emphasis on «high tech» and
entertainment, which have always
had a place here.
Une ville en chantier
Berlin est aujourd’hui
l’un des plus grands
chantiers du monde.
Kaba est présent
là aussi dans beaucoup de constructions, rénovations et
transformations
avec ses produits
des domaines –
technique de fermeture, contrôle
d’accès et systèmes
de portes.
8
New old glamour
The numerous hotels dating from
the Kaiser’s era, the famous cafés,
and the large nearby train stations
attracted so much traffic to the
Potsdamer Platz that Europe’s first
traffic light was installed there in
1924. Karl Friedrich Schinkel’s
buildings at the Brandenburg Gate
and Mendelsohn’s Columbushaus
marked significant moments in
classic and modern styles.
Avantgarde art experienced its
breakthrough at «Der Sturm» gallery
on the Potsdamer Platz, while radio
was born at the nearby Voxhaus.
Aerial bombing during World War
II reduced the Potsdamer Platz
to rubble. In 1945, it became the
place where the Soviet, British, and
American zones of occupation
met. Three years later, the boundary
between the zones was enforced,
first with paint, then with barbed
wire, and in 1961 with the construction of the Wall.
Consequently, the Potsdamer
Platz remained a sort of no man’s
land, a void, a crater of forced
stillness in the middle of a divided
city. New buildings began to
rise alongside it in West Berlin in
the 1960s and 1970s. The historic
street layout was shelved, and
the major roadway connecting
the East and the West, the old
Potsdamer Strasse, was closed.
It was only when the Wall came
down that the Potsdamer Platz
drew attention once again. Since
then, things have literally been
turned upside down. The municipal
authorities envisaged this central
location as the new heart of the
city and investors, in turn, grappled
for the best locations.
A town is being reconstructed
Work to reroute and hook up
groundwater, traffic patterns, and
power demanded incredible
flexibility and patience on the part
of Berliners. From 1994 to late
1999, 6.5 million tons of dirt and 10
million cubic meters of groundwater were excavated and pumped
out of Europe’s largest construction site. The face of Berlin was
undergoing massive surgery at 320
major construction locations. The
facelift is restoring old facades
lined by pride, suffering, and arro-
gance, while the newest materials are being used to rejuvenate
the old plaster.
Private-sector powerhouses are
rising along the Potsdamer Platz.
Cool and unimpressed, they look
out from their skyscrapers at the
nearby government district around
the Reichstag building. For major
multinationals, Berlin is the gateway
to Eastern Europe, and is the insider tip for the innovative high-tech
start-up and service provider scene.
Kaba, through installation of
ultra-modern security technology
for their clients, is helping protect what has been achieved
between the Pariser Platz and the
Potsdamer Platz, as protection
of private property, statesmen and
minorities, and public safety are
of growing importance in this city,
without limits.

Nestlé
opens a gem
On April 11, the food conglomerate Nestlé SA inaugurated its renovated headquarters at Vevey, Switzerland. The transformation of the Y-shaped building,
designed by architect Jean Tschumi, took three years. Correction of age-related
technical deficiencies in the 40-year-old building were the main focus of the
modernization effort.

Nestlé wanted to improve working conditions for its employees
and install modern communications
and air conditioning technology,
but it also wanted to give visual
expression to the company’s image.
The company opted for a translucent architectural concept devised
by Dahl Rocha and Jacques Richter. With its total of 7,800 square
meters of outside window surface
area, it best matched the company’s aesthetic expectations and
budget. Old walls have been
removed on the inside, too, and
replaced with glass partitions.
The global company’s concept of
open policy and transparency
are visibly perceptible in the naturally well-lit environment. The
transparent glass facade allows
passers-by to look deep into
the building. An atrium connecting
the two old buildings is the new
centerpiece of the headquarters.
For those working in the building, the improvisation phase is
coming to an end. All the telephone
lines remained connected during
the period, but employees were
asked to pack and move their work
stations a total of 3,200 times.
Today they are more than happy
with the improved working conditions. Daylight shines through the
building from one end to the other.
When they leave a room, the
light switches off automatically.
This adds up to savings of 60-70%
on electricity costs, while energy
consumption is down 40%
thanks to the latest air conditioning
technology.
A total of 240 companies participated in the construction project.
In September, the company opened
its gates to the public – amongst
them the Kaba Geryon safety doors
and the Kaba SLM sliding doors
with floor-mounted drives.

Last fall, European football was
able to move into its own quarters. The Union des Associations
Européennes de Football –
UEFA for short – built its new
headquarters at Nyon, on Lake
Geneva. Kaba companies
provided various automatic doors,
gate systems, and turnstiles
for the new facility.

Founded by a handful of farsighted friends of football in 1954,
UEFA has today become a real
“business” with some 100 employees. Approximately 1,000 UEFA
matches are now held every year.
Under the umbrella of FIFA, UEFA,
as one of six pan-regional football
associations worldwide, safeguards
the interests in Europe of what is
probably the world’s most popular
sport. Its efforts range from the
Champions League to youth tournaments, the promotion of women’s
football, the entry of new European
countries into the organization,
and negotiating the terms for television broadcasting rights. UEFA is
also tackling the issue of minimally
acceptable security requirements
in sports stadiums, and is launching
international campaigns, such
as the current Fair Play Campaign.
Examples of the Charon turnstiles.
It is hardly surprising, therefore,
that its former home in Bern
soon became too cramped, and
UEFA gladly accepted Nyon’s
invitation to build the new central
offices of European football
along the shores of Lake Geneva.
The impressive and spacious
headquarters were built to the plans
of French architect, Patrick
Berger and include sufficient workspace, three conference rooms
equipped with the latest technology, a library, and a restaurant.
Having equipped several new
stadiums with modern access control systems, Kaba was certainly
quite familiar to UEFA. Visitors enter
the new home of European football through a sliding door supplied
by Kaba Gilgen. A number of
Charon turnstiles are used as
individual access points, and automatic drives for other gates as well.

The group headquarters
of Deutsche Genossenschaftsbank in Frankfurt is
a prominent architectural
landmark of the bustling city.
The technology concealed
in the building is no less
spectacular than its visible
design. Kaba Systems
supplied a comprehensive
“Total Access” solution
and acted as general contractor, as was already
the case for the new
DG Bank building in Berlin.

One of the outstanding features
of the all-in-one system now
installed in Frankfurt is the fact that
DG employees need only one
Legic card to benefit from access,
time & attendance, and catering
functionality. The pertinent data,
collected and managed by a Kaba
exos system, can easily be
exported to the SAP-R/3-System
via certified interfaces. To assure
the protection of the investment,
the underlying design includes
compatibility with current and future
subsystems of a comprehensive
building management concept.
The bank’s employees use the
Legic card to gain controlled
access to the building at the elevator portals and simultaneously
log attendance time. The Kaba
Benzing reader terminals as well
as the Kaba Gallenschütz turnstiles
and tripod barriers interact in an
optimum manner. The Legic proximity chip grants access only
to authorized personnel throughout the building. At the personnel
restaurant, the cashless Legic
value handling system allows a
cashier to process at least 12
checkout transactions per minute.

With its 32,500-visitor capacity, the Gelredome in Arnheim,
Netherlands, is far from being the
largest but quite likely is the
most flexible sports and event
arena in Europe.
The stadium, which cost about
180 million Swiss francs to build,
shows its mettle in the special
details: thanks to a customized
hydraulic system, in three hours
the natural grass turf can be rolled
on tracks at a speed of 90 cm per
minute to an area along-side the
stadium, where it flourishes in natural growing conditions. Thanks to
this mobile turf, the stadium can
also be used as an ice-skating rink
and as a venue for nearly any sport,
for theatrical presentations, and
for concerts. If the weather is bad
or if a dark setting is required for
a performance, the arena can be
completely covered with a lightproof roof in just 20 minutes.
The mobile roof weighs about 800
metric tons.
Well suited for football, track,
and ice hockey, as well
as operas and rock concerts.
A natural grass turf can
be rolled into the stadium on
command, and the roof
opens and closes. Kaba Gallenschütz provided 18
double turnstiles for safe,
controlled access.
Access control to the high-tech
stadium is handled by a total of
18 double turnstiles supplied by
Kaba Gallenschütz. Especially
developed for sports stadiums
and major event centers, this series
of full-height turnstiles provides
outstanding security and sturdiness, without compromising the
ease of use that visitors expect.
The Gelredome joins the list
of sports arenas in Europe’s first
league football that Kaba has
equipped with forward-looking
access controls, including stadiums
in Amsterdam, The Hague, Utrecht, Glasgow, and Paris. Schalke
04 and Salzburg are already
looking into Kaba Gallenschütz
access options.

Networked
swimming facilities
When the weather is nice,
thousands of frazzled Zürich
residents head to lakeside,
riverside, and outdoor swimming facilities to enjoy
a cooling dip. For the first
time, paid access to seven
facilities is being handled
electronically, through the
"Züri-Badi-Karte”, featuring
a built-in Legic chip.
A total of 39 lakeside, indoor, and
outdoor swimming facilities are
available to the 350,000 inhabitants
of the city of Zurich for a refreshing dip after a hot summer’s day. In
addition to 14 paid-access facilities, Zürich’s Department of Sports
also maintains five free indoor
pools, and 16 indoor pools that are
used by schools. There are also
four privately run facilities that are
open to the public.
Although a total of more than
1,7 million people used the facilities
last year, the cooling water alone
does not guarantee that there
will be crowds of visitors. So each
facility has to attract clientele
using a wide range of additional
perks. From swimwear boutiques
to saunas, beauty salons, and
concerts, anything is possible. In
addition to the infrastructure,
entry areas are also being updated
and made more efficient.
14
All paid-access facilities will be
equipped with turnstiles and
electronic reader stations. Access
control for season pass holders
is contactless, through the ”ZüriBadi-Karte“ with built-in Legic chip.
Season ticket holders have access
to all the linked swimming facilities.
All these recently equipped locations are linked by modem to
a central administration, and the
data exchange takes place automatically.
Seven swimming facilities were
outfitted in an initial phase, and
approximately 15,000 cards are in
circulation. The other seven
facilities will be converted this fall.
Legic makes further cashless
applications conceivable, as well,
such as vending machines,
seasonal locker rentals, and kiosks
equipped with Legic readers.

as a place of refuge for him in case
of attack by Cleopatra. In addition
to palaces, baths, and huge warehouses, Masada is also renowned
for its cleverly devised system
of cisterns. Later, when Jerusalem
finally fell into Roman hands in the
year 70 following a failed Jewish
uprising, 967 Zealots retreated to
Masada. It took Rome’s Tenth
Legion three years to capture the
last Jewish bastion, at which time
the state of Israel disappeared for
nearly 1,900 years.The Zealots
avoided being taken prisoner by
committing mass suicide.
Since the 1960s, Masada
(Hebrew for fortress) has been a
tourist attraction where the
numerous archaeological finds
leave a profound impression.
Those wishing to visit the mountain
fortress can climb up the Roman
soil ramp along the west side,
a laborious, winding path, or they
may use the comfortable aerial
tramway. Kaba Gilgen equipped
the gondolas with comfortable
automatic doors.

Whenever you’re in a rush,
there are always just two
checkout lines open at the
supermarket. Globus department stores and home
improvement centers
demonstrate however, that it
doesn’t have to be that way.
A clever personnel deployment planning system sees
to it that the right employees
are working in the right
places at the right time.

collaborateurs.
Globus, a privately owned and
still independent retail company
founded in 1828 at St. Wendel in
the Saarland, is now the tenthlargest player in the German food
industry.
More than 23,000 employees
work either full-time (fixed or flexible shifts) or part-time (flexible
shifts) at Globus. Employees largely
coordinate their work hours
among themselves. To avoid long
lines as much as possible at the
deli and checkout counters, while
still taking workers’ preferences
into consideration, a personnel
deployment planning system
(known as PEP from its German
acronym) with integrated time
recording is being used at Globus.
“In addition to increasing efficiency, we want to use PEP mainly
to achieve decentralized work
scheduling and better time management for our employees.
Our goal was to handle personnel
deployment planning faster, and
to set it up locally based on more
background information,” says Olaf
Schomaker in summarizing the
demand for coordination at Globus.
Today, the weekly personnel deployment plans are prepared locally
on a PC in the individual departments. At the touch of a button, the
program can calculate how many
staff will be needed for the checkout counters and at which time of
day, based on profile data and after
projected sales figures are entered.
Using a behaviour curve derived
from past sales figures, the system
takes the projected sales figures
and a standard service output per
employee to issue a half-hourly
staffing requirement forecast for a
specific service area. In a second
stage, the system determines which
employees will be assigned to
cover the projected need.
This helps prevent over- and understaffing. Productivity per hour
and employee satisfaction have
risen significantly not least due
to the user-friendly terminals from
Kaba Benzing, on which hours
worked are logged.

“Having extensively studied a
host of potential suppliers, it
became apparent that Kaba Benzing offered a superior certified
software interface with the most
advanced hardware on the market
today”, said Tim Lane, managing
director of Armstong Hydraulics.
Added Lane, “We will be linking two
other subsidiaries in remote locations via a WAN in a manner which
Kaba Benzing has extensive experience.”
Development Engineer, Carlos de
Gouveia said, “We are delighted
with our first project utilising Kaba
Benzing B – COMM for R/3 software, and our proximity cards using
Kaba’s pioneered contactless identification technology, Legic. This
18
undoubtedly will have many benefits for the Armstrong company
as Legic’s read/write capabilities
offer multiple applications within a
single card. With our maintenance
agreement, all future software
upgrades guarantee up to date
software versions for its operating
system, making the installation
truly obsolete proof and forward
compatible.”
SAP-R/3 implementor of CDE,
John Trollip, confirms, “The
implementation of the Time Recording went very well indeed. We
were pleasantly surprised at the
ease and speed with which the
equipment was installed. The interface with SAP was hassle-free
and the few minor problems which
came to light during testing were
solved effortlessly and quickly.”

Up until now, however, there
was always a flaw within the philosophy of cash-less payment
because revaluation devices still
needed to be fed with cash. This
led the Swiss-based Legic partner
Valimatic SA and its sister company Ferros AG to initiate the development of a credit card transfer
device with its CashNT partner. The
new device allows the user to
transfer money from an EC, or all
other common credit cards, straight
onto a contact-less multi-application Legic card and, thus, offers
total cash-less payment. Users do
no have to handle bank notes
anymore. The selected amount of
money is simply booked straight
onto the smart card and debited to
the credit card or EC card account.
As one of the first customers, the
Cantonal Bank of Lucerne in
Switzerland has decided to add the
contact- and cash-less canteen
and vending solution to its existing
access control system in order
to take full advantage of the multiapplication capability of the freely
programmable Legic identification technology. Thanks to its multifunctional Legic identification
device, the banks’ employees enjoy
the increased convenience of
an easy to master payment scheme
and an efficient meal pre-order
system. For the bank, administrative costs have fallen considerably,
as the system is connected to
the CashNT® register managing
software and provides an easy
means to compile sales reports at
the restaurant and vending
machines for any selected period of
time. Last but not least, counting
cash – at least in the restaurant
department of the bank – has also
become a thing of the past.

and manage all the gates and
entrances to the site that covers
over 100 ha. Omnis Automation had
already been involved in the initial
project design and assisted the
client in formulating the required
technical standards. The final
system is now based on Kaba’s
contact-less Legic technology and
the software package Kaba exos

data readers and twenty Access
Managers are integrated into the
whole system. The gates, doors
and high security passages are
all controlled by Kentaur and Geyron turnstiles, supplied by Kaba
Gallenschütz. The same company
also furnished an automated singleentry Orthos security check.
Apart from Kaba products,
Omnis installed a camera monitoring and a digital interphone system.
It also mounted new mobile

Less

DWA – an innovative design and consulting agency in the area
of building installations and energy saving – recently moved
to its new offices in Bodegraven. It is the most energy-efficient
office building in the Netherlands.
DWA’s office building has
an energy performance coefficient
(EPC) of 0.6. This was achieved
through the intelligent application
of already existing technologies.
Project Manager Egbert Klop portrays DWA as an idealistic company
which at the same time recognizes that successful innovations
need a sound economic base.
The new office building should, over
seven years, provide DWA with a
realistic payback. Double insulation
of 16 cm is used for the outer
walls; special insulating glass performs three times better than
normal double-glazing; an atrium
and high windows bring natural
light deep into the building meaning that there is minimal need for
additional electric lighting which, in
any case, is automatically dimmed.
The ventilation system has a heat
recovery coefficient of around 90%.
All computers in the building have
LCD display units that use 80%
less energy and produce less heat,
which in turn means that lower
cooling power is required. Three
small electric heat pumps produce
all the heat necessary for the
building.
Functions operated by the network in this project include energy
control, peak saving, sunscreen
control, electric windows, heating
and cooling system, lighting (in-
cluding emergency lighting), emergency power supplies, fire alarm,
security alarm and access control
and monitoring. The LON-based
access control system, the locking

Olympia
2000
Sydney
Sydney is poised to impress athletes and visitors to the Olympic Games
with highly modern facilities and a renovated, significantly enlarged airport. Kaba quattro cylinders provide access
security in buildings, stadiums,
and on the airport premises.
Sydney, Australia’s largest city
with a population of 3.7 million,
was in great shape to host the
Olympic Summer Games.
The individual events have take
place at numerous sites with latestgeneration infrastructure in and
around Sydney. The distances
between the stadiums are
considerable, but an ingenious
transportation system was been
developed for athletes and spectators. Traffic jams were avoided
by the deployment of trains, buses,
and boats.
Although the Olympic facilities
extend across the entire city territory, this year’s games definitely
had a hub: the Olympic Park Center
in the Homebush Bay area
west of downtown Sydney. Kaba
equipped numerous facilities
of the Olympic Park with cylinders
and locks. Altogether, 1720 quattro cylinders were installed.
Sydney’s modernized international
airport is the destination for another
5000 units of the same cylinder
type.
To assure the security of participants and visitors, and also to
prevent spectators without valid
tickets from gaining access to the
22
events, all facilities have been
fenced. The total perimeter length
is nearly 40 kilometers. Keeler
Hardware Pty Ltd, the Kaba distributor that supplied the cylinders
and locks, also installed padlocks
for the fences of several summer
game sites.
