The Unican success story
KabaA and
quantum Unican
leap over the billion mark
Both sides are happy with the outcome.
On April 12, Kaba took over Unican Systems
Ltd, Montreal. The merger of Kaba
and Unican makes sense from a number
of perspectives: markets and products
complement each other perfectly, and all
the stakeholders wind up winners in the
process.
As promised, this issue includes a full
report on this quantum leap, of a magnitude
and significance unparalleled in Kaba’s
history. Kaba’s approach has been very
cooperative. We have carefully adapted our
procedures, marketing strategies, and
product portfolios to the new organization,
and taken over most functions unchanged.

security update (su)
Mr. Graf, how did Kaba’s takeover
of the Unican Group come about?
Ulrich Graf (UG) The Kaba
Group’s objectives include an ambitious performance target of 20%
sales growth per year. To achieve
this benchmark figure, we focus
on three core elements: internal
growth in EBIT margins and earnings
and external growth through acquisitions. With annual growth in the
«Total Access» market of approximately 5 --6 % and a realistic improvement in EBIT margins of some
1--2 %, we must rely on acquisitions
to achieve our goal. Unican presented an exceptional opportunity to
further our goals for growth in terms
of product portfolio and market.
We have been interested in Unican
for quite a while, and we finally
succeeded in an international
takeover process.
su What makes this takeover so
attractive strategically?
UG From a strategy perspective,
we are a great fit – we are both global leaders in the security sector.
One unusual advantage that is so
seldom part of the merger picture is
that our product portfolios complement each other well, and we both
target nearly identical markets. In
our view, then, we are combining
two companies, but in terms of
profitability, we see significant synergy potential. We are convinced
that in this case, two plus two can
equal more than four.
su You mentioned synergy
potential. Could you define that
in more detail?
UG We see the greatest potential
in the area of market synergies.
Through this merger, Kaba gains
Above: Kaba Headquarters, Switzerland
Below: Plant in Mexico
immediate access to the vital North
American market, which opens up
many cross-selling opportunities.
At the same time, Unican products
can now be marketed through existing Kaba sales channels. Product
synergies can also be tapped in
the medium term by having each
company undertake market-specific
product adaptations, opening the
door to increased cross-selling.
Finally, although this is not the biggest priority, we expect cost
savings and increased efficiency –
a goal that can be attained even
outside the scope of a merger.
su Has Kaba’s market position
changed?
UG Nothing has changed in
terms of our corporate vision, our
«Total Access» strategy. On the
contrary, we are now positioned to
pursue this basic concept even
more aggressively, through a global
approach. Thanks to the merger,
the new Kaba Group is the market
leader in several strategically
important product segments. For
example, we are the worldwide
leader in key blanks, key coding
machines, and transponder keys,
as well as in the high-security lock
market. We are also the market
and technology leader in Europe for
electronic access solutions. In the
areas of security and automatic
doors, hotel lock systems, and
comprehensive access control, we
are also one of the worldwide
leaders.
su How will customers benefit
from this situation?
UG Basically, the product line is
becoming significantly broader and
will be available worldwide, which
significantly increases the choices
available for specific customer
solutions. Customers active on a
global scale will be able to use the
same products or systems internationally, another significant benefit. The various components will
be coordinated so that, as usual
with Kaba, products will be mutually compatible in the future. The
procurement process is also being
significantly simplified, so that
customers will now be able to benefit from single-source or singlechannel convenience.
su How are you going to
Above: Hotel lock and key production
Below: Key cutting machine
deal with the issue of branding and
market presence?
UG Kaba has adopted an
umbrella brand name strategy. Well
known, strong brand names such
as Legic, Silca, and Ilco will be
preserved. Other areas will adopt
two-part names such as Kaba Ilco,
Kaba Mauer, and Kaba Mas. The
situation in specific markets is the
deciding factor. As far as possible,
we want to stay with brands and
product names that have already
been successfully introduced. This
approach means that appearance
and marketing issues may have to
be settled on a country-by-country
basis where local activities are concerned. These measures
will not affect IT platforms and
financial reporting systems, which
will be coordinated group-wide.
su How have employees reacted
to the news?
UG Very positively, because the
main emphasis is correctly being
placed on the opportunities
afforded by the merger. Kaba and
Unican have merged in order
to expand existing markets, make
better use of sales channels, and
5

tap new sales opportunities
together. Other parties that expressed an interest in acquiring Unican
during the merger process did not
have this asset. Their focus would
have been mainly on cost savings,
which would have resulted in the
job cuts that are so common
with mergers. Unican employees
were well aware of this! Our focus is
not primarily on cost savings –
this aspect was of secondary
importance to us. In terms of seamless customer service, we intend
to maintain existing national structures and contacts, without issuing
overriding directives from Rümlang.
In the future, local managers will
continue to liaise with customers.
Extensive training programs will
be added, however, so that managers will be well informed about the
expanded product line and about
logistics and marketing activities.
The whole integration process will
proceed without large-scale upheaval for the employees.
su How has the integration
process been going since it began
in June?
UG We are still in the first half of
the first 300 days during which the
companies are being regrouped.
We will push ahead with market
development, projects, and procedures during a second 900 day
phase. Control of the overall integration process lies in the hands of
a specially created post-merger
integration team. In the next few
months, of the over 70 potential
value-driver integration projects
that have been identified, those
with the greatest potential and the
best chances of success will be

The editorial offices of Moscow’s
Extra-M leave nothing to be desired:
they offer the greatest possible
level of comfort. Kaba Gilgen supplied
an operable partition system
to divide a large conference room.
Many things are in flux in Russia’s capital. With the reorganization
of the economic system, a large
number of new, privately run companies have sprung up. At the same
time, the increased openness in
terms of the freedom to express
political views has changed the formerly state-controlled press, and
new, independent daily newspapers
and television broadcasting companies have been launched.

A few obstacles had to be
overcome before the system could
be installed and made fully operational. First, the technical challenges of the layout, two half
ellipses with a previously automated section, had to be mastered.
Then there was uncertainty regarding the situation at the building site,
a crucial matter because nothing
short of absolute accuracy was
required for this particular partition
wall system. It soon became clear,
however, that no corners had
been cut, and in the end, the fit of
the partition system turned out
to be just perfect, much to the satisfaction of our installation team
and especially the client.

Extra-M is one of these newspapers. This new sense of identity is
documented not only in its reporting, but also comes to the fore in its
editorial offices in Moscow. In addition to the free-floating reception
desk in the style of the helm of the
starship Enterprise, the office sauna
provides a welcome leisure retreat
from the daily routine of the office.
To divide off the ultramodern conference room, Kaba Gilgen custombuilt an operable partition system.

Boost
in stadium construction
Starting this season, the AufSchalke Arena gives FC Schalke 04,
a major German national league football team, the most modern multifunctional stadium in Europe. The arena’s architectural highlights
are its retractable turf and mobile roof, enabling the open arena to be
turned into a hall in just a few minutes. In preparation for the 2006
World Cup games in Germany, further stadiums of this type will be built
and existing facilities will be completely renovated.

En vue du championnat du monde
de football qui
se déroulera en Allemagne en 2006,
Kaba s’est lancé le
défi d’installer
et d’intégrer le plus
confortablement
possible un système
réglant le problème
du ticketing et de
l’accès des spectateurs. Pour faire cela,
Kaba a installé, dans
le stade moderne
et multifonctionnel
«AufSchalke», un
système de tourniquets qui constitue
le must absolu en
matière de sécurité
et de confort.
8
On November 21, 1998, the symbolic groundbreaking took place for
construction of the privately
financed DM 358 million AufSchalke
Arena. Meanwhile, Europe’s most
modern sports stadium – with
the capacity to handle 62,000 spectators – has been inaugurated
in the middle of Gelsenkirchen, in the
heart of the Ruhr mining region.
The new home stadium of
the tradition-steeped FC Schalke 04
club is one thing above all: multi-
functional. The arena has a
retractable turf housed in a reinforced concrete container
that is brought into the building for
football matches only, just six hours
before the game. For the rest of
the time, the turf lies out in the
open outside the arena, where it is
exposed to all sorts of weather
conditions and can grow back into
perfect condition. Another of the
AufSchalke Arena’s special features
is the mobile roof, which can be
opened or closed in 30 minutes.
The 560-ton sliding roof converts
the open stadium into a closed hall
for concerts, musicals, or television
shows.
The AufSchalke Arena sets an
international standard by combining
all the know-how of modern
stadium design. This also relates to
the important role of smooth access
control, even when enormous
crowds must be accommodated
in a very short period of time.
The Kaba Group’s product developers have many years of experience in dealing with the special
requirements for access control in
football stadiums and other venues
that host large-scale spectator
events. The «Kentaur Sport» turnstiles, which were recently installed
at the AufSchalke Arena, and the
«Kerberos» tripod barriers are characterized by a very high level of
security and ease of use. Kaba,
through its subsidiary Kaba Türsysteme, Bühl/Germany, is playing
a pioneering role in stadium
equipment throughout Europe, as
evidenced by widely publicized
projects in Glasgow, Amsterdam,
and Paris.
Germany has the highest concentration of stadiums in Europe,
but until now, (too) little emphasis
has been placed on security
improvements, modernization of
access control concepts, and
the installation of modern ticketing
systems. Now that Germany has
been chosen to host the 2006
World Cup games, demand for
modern, comfortable, and integrated ticketing, access, and crowd
management solutions has become
a hot issue. In the next few years,
many stadiums will be rebuilt or at
least thoroughly modernized.
Kaba is perfectly poised to be a
major player in the installation
of convenient ticketing solutions and
secure access control equipment.
Entering the stadium, Kaba installations
control each and every spectator.

Flexible elolegic

Linköping University was
looking for a lock system for
the students’ union Kårallen

level of security while
remaining easy to use. Kaba
found the best solution with
a Kaba elolegic electromechanical lock system.

10
More than 10,000 students are
present on the Linköping University
campus in Sweden. Some of them
are registered for a period of years,
while others are there only to attend
specific classes. This large, heterogeneous body of students calls
for a flexible access control system
that can handle selective authorization profiles at the various department and building entrance points.
The old security system entailed
considerable administrative expense,
and the whole security arrangement
was becoming increasingly undermined by a large number of lost
keys.
So the university administration
decided to install a new lock
system. The Kaba elolegic electromechanical system turned out
to be the best solution for Kårallen,
because it is easy to manage and
provides a high level of security.
The Kaba elolegic technology was
also compatible with the existing
mechanical lock system, so no par-
ticularly noteworthy complications
arose during the installation process.
On the one hand, the new Kaba
elolegic equipment effectively filled
the gaps in the existing security
system. On the other hand, it is a
solution that will adapt to increased
demands in the coming years.
Now students need just a single key
for the main entrance, common
rooms, and limited-access areas.

With its ONE mobile phone network, Connect Austria quickly became
one of the leading providers in Austria’s mobile telephone market.
Kaba Gege supplied a Kaba exos 8300 online access control system
for the company’s Vienna headquarters.
Connect Austria GmbH obtained
the third Austrian mobile telephone
license in August 1998. The company’s ONE mobile phone network –
the most modern network in Austria – helped the company achieve
a market share of approximately
10 percent within just one year of
operation. Meanwhile, Connect
Austria has more than doubled that
figure, offering guaranteed network
coverage of 97 %.
Connect Austria operates under
the brand name ONE. In addition to
its ONE mobile phone service, the
company is also doing well with its
i-ONE Internet product and f-ONE
terrestrial network solution. A number of interactive and other services
are also offered at www.one.at.
About 1,500 employees oversee
the rapid expansion of the ONE
network, which is setting new
standards as the first Austria-wide
provider with GSM-1800 technology
and the EFR technology used in
fixed and mobile networks.
Kaba Gege installed a comprehensive online access control
system at the company’s modern
Vienna headquarters, basing the
system on the Kaba exos 8300 software. Over 80 readers and some
3,000 Legic cards are now in use.
One particularly noteworthy element is the installation of a graphic
application with a building floor
plan, making it possible to identify
the location of any door as soon
as it is opened.

FIFAcommitted to football
The international football
association FIFA (Fédération
Internationale de Football
Association) is the world’s
largest sports association,
with some 250 million
active players. Kaba Benzing played an active role
during reconstruction work
at the association’s headquarters in Zürich.
FIFA – engagée pour

Avec ses 250 millions de joueurs et

la FIFA, Fédération
Internationale de

est la plus importante association

Depuis de nombreuses années, la
FIFA est domiciliée au Sonnenberg
à Zurich. Elle a
emménagé récemment dans un

FIFA was founded on May 21,
1904, by a delegation from Belgium,
Denmark, France, the Netherlands,
Spain, Sweden, and Switzerland.
The association was founded
in Paris, the reason for its French
name.
For many decades, however,
FIFA has been located in a exceptionally beautiful spot on Zürich’s
Sonnenberg. At one time, FIFA was
housed in the former, charming
Hotel Sonnenberg, but as the
organization grew, the problem of
space became a pressing issue.
This led to the decision in 1995 to
undertake a comprehensive
expansion and conversion of the
Sonnenberg site. By early 2000, a
spacious general secretariat had
been created to accommodate
some 120 employees (in 1975, FIFA
had just 11 staff members). The
complex includes a state-of-theart conference center as well.
Besides its elegant exterior, the
new Sonnenberg site has a number
of unseen assets, including an
underground garage and an extensive basement, where computer
and telephone exchanges and the
other building control systems
are housed. While the FIFA headquarters were undergoing modernization, time recording and access
control were also brought up to
date with equipment installed
by Kaba Benzing (Schweiz) AG in
late 1999. Among other things, six
access control managers, eight
time recording terminals, and several sub-terminals were installed
in various buildings and on various
floors.

The Fürstenberg name is associated not only with a centuries-old

Brauerei in Donaueschingen is also
one of Germany’s largest breweries.
Aside from its brewing activities,
the Fürstenberg Group, with over
700 employees, is also actively
involved in the timber and forestry
industry.
Since the early 14th century,
the house of Fürstenberg has owned
extensive tracts of forest land. The
Fürstlich Fürstenbergische Holzverarbeitungsbetriebe – a timber
processing business – were established in 1920 in order to tap the
economic potential of the abundant
raw material. Today, the business
develops and manufactures innovative packaging at three locations
for such well-known firms as Volkswagen and DaimlerChrysler.
An SAP R/3 system has been in
use both in the brewery and the
wood-processing operation since
1993. Data entry was recently automated with the installation of a
Kaba Benzing B COMM solution for
R/3 ERP time management. In the
timber industry, there was a need to
record and process production
information in real time, so the
company ordered the B COMM for
R/3 ERP PP EDC solution from
Kaba Benzing. Over 20 type Bedas
95 60 terminals with insertion and
barcode swipe readers have been
installed since late 1999.

On January 7, 2000, Kaba Gilgen received a major order from the Mass
Transit Rail Corporation – one of Hong Kong’s public transit companies –
to outfit the stations of Hong Kong’s subway system with automatic platform
screen doors. The work, which will continue through 2006, is already
underway to the complete satisfaction of all parties involved. A few weeks
ago, after extensive testing at the Choi Hung station, the first platform
with automatic screen doors was inaugurated.
After the order was placed,
main design phase I and the prototype tests were completed in Fall
2000, to the customer’s satisfaction. In the first half of 2001, Kaba
Gilgen started up the Burgistein
production facility, which had been
built specifically for the Hong Kong
order. That is also the location
where the workshop for the first
100,000 cycle test was built, and
where the required 1 million cycle
test was completed. The 1 million
opening and closing motions, with
comprehensive computer-monitored test reporting, substantiated
the required structural strength
of the individual components. This
enabled the customer to assess
the functionality, aesthetics, and manufacturing operations for the
planned mass production under
real-time conditions. Finally,
in May 2001, main design phase II
was completed. Thanks to efficient
teamwork, flawless preparation,
and expert project management,
the entire project is proceeding to
Choi Hung – the first Hong Kong subway station featuring Platform Screen Doors
the complete satisfaction of everyone involved, both from a technical
perspective and with regard to
deadlines.
Once the endurance tests were
successfully completed, the
customer authorized the start-up of
production for the first platform in
the Choi Hung subway station.
Production of the 40 drive units for
the first platform got underway
at the new Burgistein site in Bern.
The pre-assembled drive elements
and door modules were then
delivered to a special test workshop
in Hong Kong, where they underwent an additional 100,000 cycle
test under the customer’s watchful
eyes, prior to final installation.
This consistent, goal-oriented
cooperation with MTRC has proven
to be very fruitful so far. The excellent
track record of the project is due
not only to flawless production data
management, efficient cost controlling, and strict scheduling, but also to
optimized logistics procedures
and, especially, level-appropriate
information flows.
In the coming months, the next
four platforms will be designed and
manufactured. A second complete
platform screen door system will
be installed. The selection of local
manufacturers qualified to produce
subassemblies is underway as
well. Significant attention is also being
paid to setting up a high-performance service and maintenance infrastructure.

will no longer announce the arrival
of the next train, swirling dust into
the eyes of the waiting people.
Passengers in all stations will
then wait safely and comfortably for
the trains, which will roar in at

Center (DKFZ) was founded 37
years ago in Heidelberg. It begun
work without its own hospital, but
in immediate proximity to the university hospitals with which it has
established a close working relationship over the past 20 years.
International exchange takes place
through cooperation with some
800 researchers and contacts with
over 300 universities and other
research institutions.

The goal of the research program
at the DKFZ is to make a substantial contribution to our understanding of what causes cancer, to
ascertain risk factors for cancer, to
prevent and diagnose the illness,
and to provide treatment. Every
day, the center’s 1,600 employees
experiment with a wide range of
chemicals and other toxic substances. Security plays a major role
there as a result, and it is important to ensure that only authorized
personnel can access particularly
sensitive areas.
To guarantee this, the center
was looking for a new system that
combines mechanical locks with
an electronic inductive secure
access system. After a request for
bids, the DKFZ opted for the offer
submitted by Kaba Benzing and
Kaba Systems: a mechanical Kaba
quattro lock system with mechatronic Kaba elolegic cylinders
and a Kaba exos system with online
readers for access control.

The Unican
success story
Kaba significantly expanded
its position in the global
market with the takeover of
the Unican Group.
Unican’s list of achievements,
which are closely associated
with the name of Aaron
Fish, contains numerous
highlights.
The Unican Group enters the
new Kaba Group as a leading manufacturer and distributor of keys,
transponder keys, and locks,
as well as their related key coding
systems. In the high-security
segments, Unican supplies locks
for safes and automatic teller
machines. The company also specializes in hotel applications with
electronic key solutions, and
supplies transponder keys to the
automotive industry. Unican holds a
dominant market position in
North America. Italy and Hungary
are its main markets in Europe.
Unican’s success story began
in 1949, thanks to the entrepreneurial
spirit and single-mindedness of
Aaron Fish. With about US$100
worth of borrowed key blanks, he
pedaled his bicycle around his
home town of Montreal and sold
the blanks to specialized retailers.
In the following formative years,
Aaron Fish learned the security
business from the ground up and
established his own dealer network.
Aaron Fish –
la vision du succès
L’histoire du succès
d’Unican est inséparable du nom
d’Aaron Fish. D’une
entreprise avec des
clés empruntées
non traitées en
1949, en passant
par la cotation en
Bourse en 1968,
cet entrepreneur,
grâce à sa volonté
de réussir et une
vision à long terme,
a su mener sa
société au sommet.
Far-sightedness and passionate
ambition were the key character traits
that urged him to establish what
would become the Unican group of
companies. In 1964, Aaron Fish and
his team patented the world’s first
push-button lock, which was immediately sold to such notable customers as the U.S. Air Force and
Navy. Unican, which has been listed
on the stock exchange since 1968,
continued to thrive, particularly after
1980. The company made numerous acquisitions, among them Ilco,
Silca, Kromer, Mauer, and MasHamilton. The decades of growth
and success culminated six months
ago when Unican merged with
Kaba to form a truly global security
corporation.

Global Player
Kaba
The Kaba-Unican merger brings together two companies with matching
strengths worldwide that complement each other perfectly in terms of their
existing main market focus and their product range. This new position
and the structural adaptations that it entails show great promise for the new
Kaba Group.
Global Player
Kaba et Unican
sont deux entreprises disposant de
forces complémentaires au niveau
mondial et dont
l’union leur permet
de parfaire aussi
bien leurs précédents points forts
sur le marché
que leurs produits.
Pour le nouveau
groupe Kaba, les
adaptations structurelles liées à la
modification de la
situation constituent des perspectives prometteuses.
22
With some 6,700 employees
worldwide and a presence in more
than 50 countries throughout
Europe, North America, and the
Asia-Pacific region, Kaba has
become a global player with the
acquisition of Unican. Consolidated
sales of the two companies are
approximately CHF 1 billion. The
merger of Kaba and Unican gives
the new company the critical mass
it needs to tap into new global
markets and to provide uniformly
high-quality service to its globalizing customers around the world.
The new Kaba Group is already the
market leader in several strategically important product areas:
Kaba is now:
the global leader in key blanks,
key coding machines, and transponder keys (Ilco and Silca)
the global leader in high-security
locks (Ilco, Mas-Hamilton,
Kromer, Mauer, and Paxos)
the European market and technology leader in electronic access
solutions (Kaba, Legic, Ilco)
Number two in security and
automatic doors
Number three in hotel lock
systems
Number three in comprehensive
access control solutions
(Total Access)
Secure, comfortable, and
efficient access solutions, brought
together under the overall «Total
Access» strategy, will remain
Kaba’s core business. As has been
the case in the past, all of the
Group’s activities are compatible
with the existing divisional structure
or with overlapping domains.
More than ever before, Kaba’s
customers can expect comprehensive, highly secure access to
buildings and facilities, combined
with efficient organization and
maximum ease of use. High-tech
enterprise data collection and identification systems round out the
company’s offer. The expanded
product range includes mechanical,
mechatronic, and electronic master
key and lock systems, as well as
keys and key coding systems
for all applications, particularly on
behalf of major original equipment
manufacturers such as the automotive industry and the international key and hardware trades.
In the «Total Access» context,
Kaba has developed clear strategies
for several business activities,
which it has subdivided into eight
strategic business segments (SBS):
Systems Integration (SI) specializes in devising comprehensive
access, security, and organizational
solutions.
Hotel Lock Systems (HL) serve
the market for mechanical, mechatronic, and electronic hotel lock
systems with their applicationspecific requirements.
Ident Systems (ID) specialize in
contactless identification.
Key Systems (KS) focus on the
manufacture and sale of mechanical key blanks, and transponder
keys and their related encryption
systems.
Door Systems (DS) specialize in
automatic, security, and convenience
doors.
Access Systems (AC) include all
mechanical, mechatronic, and
electronic lock, master key, and
access systems.
Safe Lock Systems (SL) are
focused on high-security lock technology and combine the existing
business of Kaba and Unican in this
segment, thereby creating a leading
global provider of high-security
locks.
Transponder Keys and Key blanks
production
Data Collection (DC)
deals mainly with collecting enterprise data and produces software
and middleware applications
in addition to high-end data entry
terminals.
At the broader organizational
level, Kaba will continue to function
with its four divisions: Door
Systems, Data Collection, Access
Systems, and Key Systems.

Following extensive renovations,
the management of La Tour chose to
install the EPBL 4400 series, a new
access control system from Kaba
Ilco that is secure, simple to use,
and offers guests unique check-in
and access options. The easy,
keyless and cardless security and
pre-registration capabilities of the

application.
The 4400 series offers a unique
approach to security designed
for extended stay facilities like La Tour,
and makes guests feel right at home.
Whether they register by fax, phone,
internet or in person, guests receive
a unique access code that allows
them to open the door to their suite,
and is only valid for the time period
for which they have registered.
There are no keys or cards that can
be lost or stolen. Guests can
even personalize their code after
they check-in.

A few steps from the Grand Louvre and the Faubourg Saint-Honoré,
the Meurice Hotel has been «the

for almost two centuries. Since its
creation, it has been referred to as
«The hotel of Kings», for its traditional character and exceptional

while at the same time providing
guests with the most up-to-date

As part of its impeccable reputation, the management of the
Meurice was looking for access

highest technology, to meet both
the demanding security requirements of luxury clientèle and the
staff management needs of a busy
hotel. Millennium 9000 from Kaba
Ilco was the system selected,
along with its elegant and high

On the other side of the world,
every guestroom at the luxurious

«instant classic» by Conde Nast
Traveler magazine, blends traditional Thai touches with the most
advanced technology, resulting
in a synergy of stylishness and
symbolism that reflects gentle graciousness and effortless efficiency.
With its combination of building and
access control features, Millennium
9000 was selected for its ability
to integrate the 370 guestrooms
and suites, six restaurants and bars,
extensive recreational facilities,
banquet rooms, full-service business center and function rooms.

HelpMate, the manufacturers of
the robotic courier, realized from
the beginning that the security of the
robot’s cargo was an issue. The
cargo is kept in a cabinet like compartment on the back of the
robot. The difficulty in securing the
cargo was the need for various
hospital personnel to have access to
the robot’s cargo cabinet. The proposed security system had to allow
access by many users. This eliminated locking systems that required
