The country rock i s banded s l a t e and greywacke i n c o n t a c t
t o t h e south w i t h volcanic b r e c c i a , all of t h e J u r a s s i c
Hazelton group. The s l a t e s t r i k e s N450W and d i p s 65O northeastward. A dyke of f e l d s p a r porphyry about 100 f e e t wide
s t r i k e s n o r t h e r l y i n t h e v i c i n i t y of t h e showings. The showi n g s c o n s i s t of a number of v e i n s i n t h e sediments n o t f a r
from t h e c o n t a c t w i t h t h e v o l c a n i c b r e c c i a . S t r i k e of t h e
v e i n s range from north-northwest t o west-southwest and d i p s
a r e a l l a t about 80°, e i t h e r t o t h e n o r t h e a s t , southwest, o r
south. The v e i n f i l l i n g s c o n s i s t of q u a r t z and s i l i c i f i e d
country rock mineralized w i t h p y r i t e , a r s e n o p y r i t e , sphaleri t e , and galena. The lowest showing, a v e i n about 5 f e e t wide
c o n t a i n s numerous s t r e a k s and i r r e g u l a r masses of mineralizat i o n . The v e i n pinches t o about 6 inches a t t h e c o n t a c t of
t h e dyke b u t continues i n t h e dyke. A v e i n n e a r t h e long a d i t
has a width of about 32 inches. An a s s a y a c r o s s 8 inches on
t h e f o o t w a l l gave: gold, 0.50 ounce a ton; s i l v e r , 0.6 ounce a
ton. A sample a c r o s s t h e remaining 24 inches of t h e v e i n
assayed: gold, 0.12 ounce a ton; s i l v e r , 0.3 ounce a ton. Open
c u t s expose a mineralized zone about 24 inches wide w i t h
p.t.0.

These claims a r e l o c a t e d between e l e v a t i o n s of 3,000 and
4,200 f e e t on t h e n o r t h s i d e of a g l a c i e r f i l l e d v a l l e y , t r i b u t a r y t o t h e Tide Lake v a l l e y , about 4+ m i l e s north-northwest of
t h e n o r t h end of Summit Lake.
The f i r s t r e p o r t e d a c t i v i t y on t h e 16 claim Portland group
was i n 1934 when t h e owner, Alphonse Thomas of Stewart, was
exploring t h e showings by open c u t t i n g . I n t e r m i t t e n t work by
t h e owner continued u n t i l 1940 when S i l b a k Premier Mines,
Limited optioned t h e property. Work by t h e company included
e x p l o r a t o r y s t r i p p i n g , open c u t t i n g , and 162 f e e t of d r i f t i n g
i n one a d i t . The o p t i o n was subsequently r e l i n q u i s h e d .
M r . Thomas s t i l l held t h e property, reduced t o 4 claims, i n
1946. Development work t o t h i s d a t e included, i n a d d i t i o n t o
t h e a d i t d r i v e n by S i l b a k Premier, a 10 f o o t long a d i t and about
1 0 open c u t s .
