TOUGH COMPETITION AND HIGH STANDARDS AT ESSAY
The first Competition of 2016 of the CIK-FIA European KZ - KZ2 Championship and CIK-FIA Karting
Academy Trophy took place at the International Circuit of Aunay les Bois / Essay with varied weather conditions making it difficult for the 134 drivers present. The finals still crowned the best of the
high level Competition: Marco Ardigo won in KZ, Luca Corberi in KZ2 and Callum Bradshaw in the
Academy.
The Vice President of the CIK-FIA, Kees Van De Grint, followed the course of the Competition at Essay closely: «I would first like
to emphasise the quality of the organisation from Claude Gripon’s team whose investment and passion are a pleasure to see.
The Aunay les Bois / Essay circuit to me has all the characteristics of a real karting circuit. There was an accident that is to be
deplored, but the safety of the circuit and the effectiveness of emergency action could not be challenged. Motorsport will always
present an element of risk. Fortunately, the marshall who was affected in this incident is doing very well.
“As usual the KZ2 category produced hard-fought races with the full unwinding of suspense and with pleasure we saw the best
drivers win in the end. The standard was very high in KZ, but the number of participants was not large enough. I am delighted to
see that many brands compete with a lot of energy with their factory teams and I hope they can expand so that we have a more
consistent entry. However, I regret that some drivers were able to take advantage of not participating in the entire Competition,
in practice not racing in the Qualifying Heats, to preserve their tyres for the final stages. From a sporting point of view, it is not
at all a good thing.
“Finally, the CIK-FIA Karting Academy Trophy has been very exciting with all of the young enthusiastic and motivated Drivers from
around the world. I extend my congratulations to the technical team from the OTK Kart Group which was able to offer the participants in the first Competition effective equipment of equal quality for all. Many engine exchanges were made at the initiation of
our technical delegate without a variation in performance. The winner used different engines while remaining at the forefront of
the category. The track behaviour of the drivers has improved significantly over the weekend, thanks to the front fairing fasteners
limiting contact. We noticed that some drivers needed better training in the rules of competition, in addition to regular briefings,
to better take into account cultural differences. On the other hand, the presence in Essay of a representative of the FIA Women
in Motor Sport Commission should be emphasised.»
Henny Hemmes observed the unfolding situation CIK-FIA Karting Academy Trophy closely, following the progress of Shion Tsujimoto, the Japanese driver supported this year by the FIA Women in Motor Sport Commission. «I’ve been part of the Commission
since its inception six years ago under the chairmanship of Michele Mouton. At Essay, I discovered what the CIK-FIA Karting
Academy Trophy really represents and I enjoyed the educational aspect of this category. This programme really is fantastic and
the efforts made to provide each participant with equal equipment are welcome. Shion Tsujimoto has improved a lot since last
season, she is very fast despite changing conditions that have not always been easy to manage. She obviously needs to increase
her experience, but she is in an excellent position to move forward. I also followed another girl, Hamda Al Qubaisi of the UAE,
for her Academy debut, although she is not directly helped by the Commission, but is supported in the Middle East.»

The Essay schedule inaugurated the new race format for 2016, appreciated by all participants. Wednesday and Thursday were
devoted to unofficial free testing, which allowed them to prepare for the Competition, while the Academy Trophy started on
Thursday with its traditional extra early season day with the new OK-Junior type equipment provided by OTK Kart Group whose
Vortex engines use specific Dell’Orto float bowl carburettors. Everyone became familiar with their equipment and the new Vega
tyres used in all categories this year. For everyone, the changing weather and much cooler temperatures for the season required
rapid adaptability, particularly during Qualifying Practice on a track with changing grip between the wet and the dry which set
the tone of the Competition. Note that the Competition has also changed with the awarding of points for the Prefinal in addition
to those already distributed at the end of the Qualifying Heats and of course the Final.
Superb race for Ardigo in KZ
It was a quality field for the opening of the CIK-FIA European KZ Championship, even though the entry was a little too limited.
The Spaniard Jorge Pescador (Praga / Parilla / Vega) took advantage of his pole position in Qualifying Practice to maintain
the advantage in both the Qualifying Heats. The Italian Paolo De Conto (CRG / Maxter / Vega) was then ranked 2nd ahead
of the Frenchman Jérémy Iglesias (Sodi / TM Racing / Vega) while Marco Ardigo (Tony Kart / Vortex / Vega) came back to
4th position after 10th during Qualifying. Ardigo then asserted his dominance in the final stages by first winning the Prefinal
against the Belgian Rick Dreezen (Ricciardo Kart / Parilla / Vega) who had new tyres. Iglesias took control early in the Final
before yielding to Ardigo, the indisputable winner, and Flavio Camponeschi (CRG / Parilla / Vega) on the rise since his 21st
in Qualifying. The Czech Patrik Hajek (Kosmic / Vortex / Vega) and Briton Ben Hanley (Croc Promotions / TM Racing / Vega)
completed the top five. In the provisional classification of the Championship, Ardigo and Iglesias lead from Camponeschi, De
Conto is 4th and Pescador 5th.
Corberi relentless in the KZ2 Final
The confrontation was fierce among the 58 participants in the first Competition of the CIK-FIA European KZ2 Championship. The
Italian Leonardo Lorandi (Tony Kart / Vortex / Vega) opened the scoring during Qualifying Practice while the Dutchman Stan
Pex (CRG / Vortex / Vega) was in the lead after the Qualifying Heats in front of Lorandi and the Frenchman Paolo Besancenez
(Tony Kart / Vortex / Vega). Pex won Prefinal 1 against Besancenez and the Italian Alessio Piccini (Tony Kart / Vortex / Vega),
while his compatriot Luca Corberi (Tony Kart / Vortex / Vega) stood out by winning the Prefinal 2 after constantly running in
the top four early in the weekend. The Italian Fabian Federer (CRG / Modena Engines / Vega) again placed himself in 2nd
position after experiencing trouble and a retirement in his first Qualifying Heat. Corberi quickly seized the lead to the detriment of
Pex in the Final and flew to a superb victory. Federer came back inexorably to 2nd position ahead of Besancenez and Lorandi,
Pex having to settle for 5th place. In the provisional classification of the Championship, Besancenez is in 2nd place behind the
leader Corberi, with Pex still in 3rd position in front of Lorandi and Federer.

Bradshaw the undisputed leader of the Academy Trophy
At the wheel of their new Exprit / Vortex / Vega karts, the 50 participants of the CIK-FIA Karting Academy Trophy came to Essay
from 39 nations from 5 continents.
Callum Bradshaw (GBR) could hardly have achieved a better score. After setting the 2nd fastest time during Qualifying Practice,
as the leader of his group, he then monopolised 1st place until the Final. Alfred Nilsson (SWE) challenged him in the Qualifying
Heats before sinking in the finals. Constantly in the top three, Thomas Mialane (FRA) finished 2nd in the Prefinal ahead of Mads
Eielso Hansen (DNK), but the positions were reversed in the Finale where Oliver Clarke (GBR) took over the 4th place before
the very fast Jagger Jones (USA), who had the best recovery. In the provisional Trophy standings Bradshaw leads from Mialane
and Hansen with Clarke 4th and ChanJoon Lee (KOR) 5th.
The next round will be at Zuera (ESP) for KZ from 13th to 15th May, KZ2 will then meet at Adria (ITA) from 3rd to 5th June and
the Academy in Portimao (PRT) from June 24th to 26th.

RUDES COMPÉTITIONS ET NIVEAU ÉLEVÉ À ESSAY
La première Compétition 2016 des Championnats d’Europe CIK-FIA de KZ - KZ2 et Trophée Académie
de Karting de la CIK-FIA s’est déroulée sur le Circuit International d’Aunay les Bois / Essay sous des
conditions climatiques variées compliquant la tâche des 134 Pilotes présents. Les finales ont malgré
tout couronné les meilleurs au terme d’une Compétition de haute tenue : Marco Ardigo s’est imposé
en KZ, Luca Corberi en KZ2 et Callum Bradshaw en Académie.
Le Vice-Président de la CIK-FIA, Kees Van De Grint a suivi de près le déroulement de la Compétition d’Essay : « Je tiens tout
d’abord à souligner la qualité de l’organisation de l’équipe de Claude Gripon dont l’investissement et la passion font plaisir à
voir. Le circuit d’Aunay les Bois / Essay possède à mes yeux toutes les caractéristiques d’un vrai circuit de karting. Un accident
a dû être déploré, sans que la sécurité du circuit et l’efficacité des secours puissent être mises en cause. Les sports mécaniques
présenteront toujours une part de risque. Heureusement, le commissaire qui a été touché dans cet incident se porte très bien.
La catégorie KZ2 a proposé comme d’habitude des Courses très disputées au dénouement plein de suspense et c’est avec plaisir
que nous avons vu les meilleurs Pilotes s’imposer au final. Le niveau était très élevé en KZ, mais le nombre de participants n’était
pas assez important. Je suis ravi de voir que plusieurs grandes marques s’affrontent avec beaucoup d’énergie à travers leurs
équipes d’usine et je souhaite qu’elles puissent étoffer leur formation pour que nous disposions d’un plateau plus conséquent. Par
contre, je regrette que quelques Pilotes aient pû tirer avantage de ne pas participer à l’ensemble de la Compétition, ne roulant
pratiquement pas durant les Manches Qualificatives, afin de préserver leurs pneumatiques en vue des phases finales. D’un point
de vue sportif, ce n’est pas du tout une bonne chose.
Enfin, le Trophée Académie de Karting de la CIK-FIA s’est avéré très excitant avec tous ces jeunes Pilotes enthousiastes et motivés
venus du monde entier. J’adresse tous mes compliments à l’équipe technique d’OTK Kart Group qui a su proposer aux participants, dès la première Compétition, un matériel efficace de qualité égale pour tous. De nombreux échanges de moteurs ont
été effectués à l’initiative de notre délégué technique, sans que les performances ne varient. Le vainqueur a utilisé par exemple
tois moteurs différents tout en restant aux avant-postes de la catégorie. Le comportement en piste des Pilotes a sensiblement
progressé au cours du week-end, notamment grâce aux fixations de carénage avant limitant les contacts. Nous avons remarqué
que certains Pilotes avaient besoin d’une meilleure formation aux règles de la Compétition, en complément des briefings habituels, pour mieux tenir compte des différences culturelles de chacun. D’autre part, la présence à Essay d’une représentante de
la Commission FIA des Femmes dans le Sport Automobile doit être soulignée. »
Henny Hemmes a en effet pu découvrir en situation le déroulement du Trophée Académie de Karting de la CIK-FIA en suivant de
près le parcours de Shion Tsujimoto, la pilote japonaise soutenue cette année par la Commission FIA des Femmes dans le Sport
Automobile. « Je fais partie de la Commission depuis sa création, il y a 6 ans sous la présidence de Michèle Mouton. A Essay,
j’ai pu découvrir ce que représentait vraiment le Trophée Académie de Karting de la CIK-FIA et j’ai beaucoup apprécié l’aspect
formateur de cette catégorie. Ce programme est vraiment fantastique et les efforts effectués pour fournir à chaque participant
un matériel équitable sont à saluer. Shion Tsujimoto a beaucoup progressé depuis la saison dernière, elle est très rapide malgré

des conditions changeantes qui n’ont pas toujours été faciles à gérer. Elle a bien sûr besoin d’augmenter son expérience, mais
elle est dans une excellente situation pour aller de l’avant. J’ai également suivi une autre jeune fille, Hamda Al Qubaisi des Emirats Arabes Unis, pour ses débuts en Académie, même si elle n’est pas directement aidée par la Commission, mais seulement
soutenue au Moyen Orient. »
Le progamme d’Essay a inauguré le nouveau format de Course 2016, apprécié par l’ensemble des participants. Les journées
de mercredi et jeudi consacrées à des Essais Libres non-officiels, leur ont permis de bien préparer la Compétition, tandis que le
Trophée Académie démarrait jeudi lors de sa traditionnelle journée supplémentaire de début de saison avec le nouveau matériel
de type OK-Junior fourni par OTK Kart Group dont les moteurs Vortex utilisent des carburateurs spécifiques Dell Orto à cuve. Tout
le monde a pu se familiariser avec son matériel et les pneus Vega nouvellement utilisés dans toutes les catégories cette année.
Pour tous, la météo changeante et les températures bien fraîches pour la saison ont nécessité une capacité d’adaptation rapide,
notamment lors des Eesais Qualificatifs disputés sur une piste à l’adhérence en évolution constante entre l’humide et le sec qui a
donné le ton de la Compétition. A noter que le barème des Compétitions a également été modifié par l’attribution de points en
Préfinale en complément de ceux déjà distribués à l’issue des Manches Qualificatives et bien entendu de la Finale.
Superbe parcours d’Ardigo en KZ
La qualité était au rendez-vous de l’ouverture du Championnat d’Europe CIK-FIA de KZ, même si le plateau restait un peu
trop confidentiel. L’Espagnol Jorge Pescador (Praga/Parilla/Vega) a profité de sa pole position des Essais Qualificatifs pour
conserver l’avantage dans les deux Manches Qualificatives. L’Italien Paolo De Conto (CRG/Maxter/Vega) occupait alors le 2e
rang devant le Français Jérémy Iglesias (Sodi/TM Racing/Vega) tandis que Marco Ardigo (Tony Kart/Vortex/Vega) revenait
en 4e position après son 10e temps lors des Qualifications. Ardigo assurait ensuite sa domination dans les phases finales en
remportant d’abord la Préfinale face au Belge Rick Dreezen (Ricciardo Kart/Parilla/Vega) qui avait chaussé des pneus neufs.
Iglesias prenait les commandes au début de la Finale avant de céder face à Ardigo, vainqueur indiscutable, puis Flavio Camponeschi (CRG/Parilla/Vega) en pleine ascension depuis son 21e chrono. Le Tchèque Patrik Hakek (Kosmic/Vortex/Vega) et le
Britannique Ben Hanley (Croc Promotions/TM Racing/Vega) complétaient le top 5. Au classement provisoire du Championnat,
Ardigo mène devant Iglesias et Camponeschi, De Conto est pointé 4e et Pescador 5e.
Corberi implacable en Finale KZ2
La confrontation a été sévère entre les 58 participants à cette première Compétition du Championnat d’Europe CIK-FIA de KZ2.
L’Italien Leonardo Lorandi (Tony Kart/Vortex/Vega) a ouvert le score lors des Essais Qualificatifs tandis que le Hollandais Stan
Pex (CRG/Vortex/Vega) repassait en tête après les Manches Qualificatives devant Lorandi et le Français Paolo Besancenez
(Tony Kart/Vortex/Vega). Pex remportait la Préfinale 1 face à Besancenez et à l’Italien Alessio Piccini (Tony Kart/Vortex/Vega),
tandis que son compatriote Luca Corberi (Tony Kart/Vortex/Vega) sortait du lot en s’imposant dans la Préfinale B après avoir été
constant dans le top 4 en début de week-end. L’Italien Fabian Federer (CRG/Modena Engines/Vega) se replaçait en 2e position après avoir connu des ennuis et un abandon au départ de sa 1ère Manche Qualificative. Corberi s’emparait rapidement
de la 1ère position au détriment de Pex lors de Finale et s’envolait vers une superbe victoire. Federer remontait inexorablement

Bradshaw, leader incontesté du Trophée Académie
Au volant de leurs nouveaux ensembles Exprit/Vortex/Vega, les 50 participants du Trophée Académie de Karting de la CIK-FIA
se retrouvaient à Essay en provenance de 39 nations des 5 continents.
Callum Bradshaw (GBR) pouvait difficilement réaliser un meilleur score. Auteur du 2e temps lors des Essais qualificatifs, mais
déjà leader de son groupe, il a ensuite monopolisé la 1ère place jusqu’en Finale. Alfred Nilsson (SWE) lui a donné la réplique
dans les Manches Qualificatives avant de sombrer dans les phases finales. Constant dans le top 3, Thomas Mialane (FRA) terminait 2e de la Préfinale devant Mads Eielso Hansen (DNK), les positions s’inversant au cours de la Finale où Oliver Clarke (GBR)
reprenait la 4e place devant le très rapide Jagger Jones (USA), auteur d’une remontée exemplaire. Au classement provisoire du
Trophée, Bradshaw mène face à Mialane et Hansen, Clarke est 4e et ChanJoon Lee (KOR) 5e.
Le prochain rendez-vous aura lieu pour les KZ à Zuera (ESP) du 13 au 15 mai, les KZ2 se retrouveront ensuite à Adria (ITA) du
3 au 5 juin et l’Académie à Portimao (PRT) du 24 au 26 juin.
