Championship - Hiltbrand, the rising star of 2016,
crowned in Bahrain

Bahrain organised a World Karting Competition for the third time and the quality of
welcome and the magic of the night Races in the heart of the desert have once
again contributed to the success of this first CIK-FIA World Championship dedicated
to OK engines. The Spaniard Pedro Hiltbrand finally triumphed after a breathless
sporting confrontation.
Slightly upgraded to provide more safety and fairness, the 1415m Bahrain International Kart
Circuit was the setting for a grandiose struggle for the supreme title. As difficult as it is
spectacular, the Competition was full of suspense. The unwavering involvement of the Kingdom
of Bahrain has undoubtedly played a major role in the success of this exceptional Competition.
With close to 50 entrants, the new OK category concludes its first season. Intense battles,
drama and sporting achievements have kept fans and enthusiasts from all over the world busy.
Justified victory for Hiltbrand
Italy's Lorenzo Travisanutto (Tony Kart / Vortex / Vega) scored at the start of the World
Championship in OK by placing 1st in Qualifying Practice. The Polish champion Karol Basz
(Kosmic / Vortex / Vega) clearly dominated the Qualifying Heats while the other contenders
were revealed: Finland's Paavo Tonteri (CRG / Parilla / Vega), the Italian Leonardo Lorandi
(Tony Kart / Vortex / Vega), the Swede Noah Milell (Kosmic / Vortex / Vega) or the Russian
winner Alexander Smolyar (Tony Kart / Vortex / Vega).
Basz and Hiltbrand were neck and neck in the Final, while the young Dane Christian Lundgaard
(Ricciardo Kart / Parilla / Vega) and Tonteri joined in the fight. Basz seemed to have won the
game by taking the lead on the 16th of the 22 laps. Hiltbrand, however, replied by passing his
rival excitingly. The Spaniard flew to a magnificent victory, Basz managed to regain 2nd place
and Felice Tiene (CRG / Parilla / Vega) had a very good 3rd position on the podium after an
admirable 17-place climb.
"This season has been really fantastic for me. I successively took the titles and important
victories in OK and KZ2 to finish with the World Championship. I am very grateful to all of the
CRG team for giving me the means to impose myself at the highest level. Thanks to them, I
had the best year of my career in 2016 and I thank them for it."

Bahreïn organisait pour la troisième fois une Compétition mondiale de Karting sur
son sol. La qualité de l'accueil comme la magie des Courses nocturnes au coeur du
désert ont à nouveau contribué à la pleine réussite de ce premier Championnat du
Monde CIK-FIA consacré aux mécaniques OK. L'Espagnol Pedro Hiltbrand a
finalement triomphé à l'issue d'un affrontement sportif haletant.
Légèrement aménagés pour offrir davantage de sécurité et d'équité, les 1415 m du Bahrain
International Kart Circuit ont servi de cadre à une lutte grandiose pour le titre suprême. Aussi
difficile que spectaculaire, la Compétition n'a pas été avare en suspense. L'implication sans
faille du Royaume de Bahreïn a incontestablement joué un rôle majeur dans la réussite de
cette Compétition exceptionnelle. Comptant près de 50 engagés, la nouvelle catégorie OK
conclut en beauté sa première saison. Batailles intenses, coups de théâtre et exploits sportifs
ont tenu en haleine les participants et les passionnés du monde entier.
Sacre mérité pour Hiltbrand
L'Italien Lorenzo Travisanutto (Tony Kart/Vortex/Vega) avait marqué le début de la Compétition
mondiale en OK en occupant la première position des Essais Qualificatifs. Mais le Champion en
titre polonais, Karol Basz (Kosmic/Vortex/Vega) dominait nettement les Manches Qualificatives
alors que d'autres prétendants se révélaient : le Finlandais Paavo Tonteri (CRG/Parilla/Vega),
l'Italien Leonardo Lorandi (Tony Kart/Vortex/Vega), le Suédois Noah Milell (Kosmic/Vortex/Vega)
ou le Russe Alexander Smolyar (Tony Kart/Vortex/Vega), vainqueur de la Préfinale 1.
Basz et Hiltbrand se retrouvaient au coude à coude en Finale, tandis que le jeune Danois
Christian Lundgaard (Ricciardo Kart/Parilla/Vega) et Tonteri se joignaient à la lutte. De plus en
plus rapide, Basz semblait avoir gagné la partie en reprenant la tête au 16e des 22 tours.
Hiltbrand répliquait pourtant lors d'un dépassement téméraire qui terrassait son rival.
L'Espagnol s'envolait vers une magnifique victoire, Basz parvenait à retrouver la 2e place et
Felice Tiene (CRG/Parilla/Vega) assurait une très belle 3e position sur le podium après une
admirable remontée de 17 places.
« Cette saison a vraiment été fantastique pour moi. J'ai enchaîné les titres et victoires
importantes aussi bien en OK qu'en KZ2 pour terminer par le Championnat du Monde. Je suis
très reconnaissant envers tous les membres de l'équipe CRG de m'avoir donné les moyens de
m'imposer au plus haut niveau. Grâce à eux, j'ai connu en 2016 la meilleure année de ma
carrière et je les en remercie. »
