In June the Ministry of Tourism and Creative Industries of Haiti (MTIC) organized a ‘Roadshow’ in seven cities in the United States in order to promote the destination. Indeed, from May 27th to June 5th, a caravan comprised of different tour operators and representatives of the private and public tourism sector, stopped in Miami, Atlanta, Orlando, Boston, Connecticut, New York, and Missouri, bringing good news to the cities and also returning to Haiti with good news for tourism. On June 15th, 16th and 17th, Haiti hosted the large annual regional conference of the Association of American Chambers of Commerce in Latin America and the Caribbean (AACCLA). A first for the country. "A great success for Haiti," testified Philippe Armand, President of the Haitian-American Chamber of Commerce (AMCHAM-Haiti), one of the organizers of this event. Among small and large ongoing projects and inaugurations, Haiti in early July, did very well at Expo Milano 2015, an international fair held in Milan, Italy. Haitian fashion, agriculture and cuisine were honored on Friday, July 10th, which was specially devoted to Haiti. Culture and beliefs of 150 countries gathered in one place. If Expo Milano is not a competition per se, it did not prevent states from around the world including the United States, Germany, Italy, England, Japan, France, Argentina, Brazil, Angola, Qatar, Nepal, Haiti, Togo, Zimbabwe and the Dominican Republic to roll out their Sunday best to impress and better sell their culture. MTIC ensured a presentation of typical local products and the promotion of the destination at this great event. In the South, MTIC culminated on Sunday, July 12, 2015, two days of training for the benefit of journalists and press staff in the department. It was also an opportunity for the journalists to visit the major ongoing construction projects on Ile-a-Vache. In addition to these activities, a marketing agreement was signed with the French tour operator Look Voyages at the Haitian Embassy in Paris to launch the Haiti destination. An arrival of two hundred tourists a week at Decameron Club Indigo is planned for the coming days, and was announced to the Parisian press. Meanwhile, preparations for CARIFESTA are going well. The heads of delegation and artistic directors of the countries participating in this great festival are already on site and are put the finishing touches for a successful 12th edition. Take the opportunity to plan your summer holidays and participate in the Caribean Festival to be held nowhere else but in Haiti from August 21 to 30, 2015. Come! And bring your family and friends with you! Haiti awaits you! Venez! Et amenez familles et amis avec vous! Haïti vous attend! Escapade Pension Esther Your Neighborhood Escapade A By Rachele Viard | Photos by Ludmillo Pierre n escape, a Zen zone, a little getaway from all the everyday “noise” of the downtown area is what comes to mind when I think of my visit to Pension Esther. A family owned Bed & Breakfast (B&B) located in Pacot owned by sisters Nancy and Regine Laroche. You can almost forget where you are and get lost wrapped up in the quietness and greenery which surrounds the B&B. The moment I entered the property, I felt something shift right away, but couldn’t put my finger on it. Though I realized how green, secluded and calming the property felt. 4 MAGIC HAITI JULY / AUGUST 2015 As I toured the B&B, I clearly understood why people found Pension Esther comfortable and why one could enjoy some time away from home there and yet still have that homey feeling. The sisters converted their family home into a beautiful and comfortable quaint lodge decorated with local art and handcrafted furnishings. The B&B has five rooms which are spacious, inviting and beneficial for a business traveler. It offers guests several areas to relax and unwind. A patron referred to Pension Esther as a “Haven of peace, conducive for reflection.” Pension Esther serves some of the most amazing food! Yes even the food is stress free and uncomplicated. No frills about it, just great tasting home cooked dishes made with love. Using for the most part local ingredients they create clean, healthy and delicious dishes such as a Kreyòl spiced grilled chicken, curried pork and for a little something out of the box fried tofu croquets. Each day they offer a dish of the day with a vegetarian option. In addition, they have some great sandwiches, one of which is always vegetarian. And you are served in a quaint outdoor Café which is the right setting for nutritious meals. Another surprisingly interesting fact about Pension Esther, its backyard garden area has been transformed into a Zen retreat. The space dedicated to yoga is located amidst lush greenery where Regine instructs yoga classes. In addition, you can also schedule an appointment with a masseuse if you so desire, to take your relaxation to the next level and enjoy a Swedish Therapeutic Massage. The yoga classes and massages are also open to the public. In transforming their family home, Nancy and Regine have truly opened their doors to anyone who is looking to rest their head and disconnect from the real world for a bit, and also yearning to pamper their bodies. “Part of our success I believe, is that our mother’s spirit is still here watching over us and guiding us in the right direction” Nancy tells me with a smile. Ambassador of the francophonie along with Belo and Jean Jean Roosevelt, B.I.C is also a great defender of his native language which is Kreyòl. Growing up with strict and religious parents, the young Roosevelt wasn't allowed to play any secular music. N e ve r t h e l e s s, he managed to let his passion for rap music take over. He gathered with a few friends, and together they started True Little Stars. The band even won a singing contest organized by Georges Lys Hérard aka Master Dji who remains an icon in Haitian rap music years after his death. JULY / AUGUST 2015 MAGIC HAITI 7 After spending some time playing music on the down low, B.I.C eventually joined Flex in 2000 which helped him take his career to a new level. For a few years, the band had some successful songs and gained some notoriety. Unfortunately, King D, one of its most important members, decided to start a solo career, putting an end to a chapter that was very promising. After a failed attempt to start a new band named Reflex, Roosevelt had no other choice than going solo too in 2005. At first, he named himself after the brand B.I.C, a company best known for making ballpoint pens. When he felt the need to go after 8 MAGIC HAITI JULY / AUGUST 2015 Photo by Junior Plesius Louis “First, I want to prove through my work that poetry can be written in any language, be it in French, English or Kreyòl" the international market he changed it into B.I.C an acronym that stands for Brain, Intelligence, Creativity. Since then, these three words have become his motto. Roosevelt, who's also a former English teacher, commands with ease the French, Kreyòl and English languages. His five albums are a perfect mix of different sounds and well written lyrics. His music is all about love, family, social issues, and so much more. “First, I want to prove through my work that poetry can be written in any language, be it in French, English or Kreyòl. I also make sure I write lyrics that people can actually relate to. I sing their day to day life and they love it,” says the singer. B.I.C has also worked with a lot of other great Haitian artists such as Emeline Michel, Lionel Benjamin, and Rutshelle Guillaume. Nevertheless his work with the “Caravane francophone” for 5 years alongside Belo and Jean Jean Roosevelt stands out as one of his greatest collaborations. Back in April 2015, B.I.C celebrated his birthday and his 15 years in the Haitian music industry. On this occasion, he published a new edition of his book named “Le champ magnéB.I.C”, which featured most of his compositions. Father of two girls, the artist is determined to live off his music. This is actually what he has been doing for the past few years. He is a member of SACEM which is a French professional association which protects the work of authors, composers and publishers. The organization collects artists payments and distributes it to the original artist. B.I.C has to his credits his debuts album with Flex and 5 solo albums. That makes him a very prolific artist, not to mention his numerous collaborations and the amount of songs he has written. JULY / AUGUST 2015 MAGIC HAITI 9 Lamanjay China Wok By Rachele Viard Photos by Ludmillo Pierre A uthentic Chinese cuisine, with great flavors served in a casual comfortable atmosphere was what Godwork Noël had in mind when opening China Wok. Mr. Noël’s first stop whenever he travels is always to try the closest Chinese restaurant, so why not open 10 MAGIC HAITI JULY / AUGUST 2015 his own right here at home? Sure enough as you cross the threshold, you do feel as though you have been transported to Chinatown in New York City. I had a fun and relaxed evening, dining with co-workers getting a feel for the recently opened establishment and talking to Mr. Noël. I had heard great things about China Wok, and was looking forward to spending time there. With Chez Woo’s absence from Haiti’s culinary map, China Wok definitely fills a void or craving one might have for Chinese cuisine. An intimate setting with deep red hues and accents with oriental touches everywhere, the décor further fueled my desire to dig in to some great Chinese food! And after a little tour of the restaurant and learning a bit more about it, my colleagues and I were treated to a savory feast. We sampled dishes such as, steamed pork wantons, vegetable spring rolls, pork fried rice, and Cantonese shrimp just to name a few. Tasting a bit of everything and bite after bite, I have to say…simply delicious is how I would describe the food at China Wok. Also as someone who eats with her eyes first, the presentation of the dishes are on point, and perfect for sharing! Trying to keep things as authentic as he can, sure those key flavors are there. You can sense his attention to details. His staff is certainly an indication of that. Their pleasant and courteous demeanor is not unnoticed. China Wok is certainly a great option on the local dining scene, the atmosphere is great for any type of get together. With a bar and bartender in house ready to satisfy that need for a ‘TGIF' let’s get this weekend started’ drink. If you don’t have the means or time to pick and travel to Beijing, China, well whenever you have a craving for Chinese, well China Wok is a great alternative for sure. You won’t regret it, and even none meat eaters will find something to dive into. Make it your next choice for girl’s night out, or “date night”. I had a great experience and am sure you will too. Surprised and delighted by the mark it left, he continued to cover the floor and nearby wall with marks and doodles. Entering the room to find him energetically enthralled, his father, whose name he bears, asked “what has you so excited Alix?” “It obeys me!” he gleefully responds. By James Obarowski Photos by James Obarowski & courtesy of the Roy Family 12 MAGIC HAITI JULY / AUGUST 2015 T hat fascination never left him, and as Alix grew older his natural talent and intense compulsion to draw, paint and sculpt led his family to encourage and support his obsession. Growing up first in the Champs de Mars area as a quiet and shy youth who attended the nearby St. Louis de Gonzague, he developed a timid temperament under the strict discipline of the Catholic school. Forever drawing, he would wander over to nearby markets and fill sheet after sheet of paper with sketches inspired by Haiti’s cacophonous street life. At just 14, he began studying at the Centre D’art, JULY / AUGUST 2015 MAGIC HAITI 13 an institute in Port au Prince that introduced the world to Haiti’s profoundly original art and supported local artists. At the Centre D’Art Alix nurtured his abilities under the mentorship of Haitian art luminaries like Luce 14 MAGIC HAITI JULY / AUGUST 2015 Turnier, Maurice Borno and Lucien Price who marveled at his talent for drawing and quick acquisition of painting skills. The time he spent there, along with the freedom and encouragement from his mentors opened up Alix’s spirit and he grew up to become what friends described as a charming, funny and caring man. He was constantly seeking inspiration in places where he could sit unnoticed for hours, spending endless days in Marché Darbonne until all the vendors knew him on sight, a figure that became part of the background like the broad trees he would later paint. Although best known for his acrylic paintings, Alix never thought of himself as a painter, but rather a “Cinéaste”, capturing stories and activity, as though his drawings and paintings fit together as a giant storyboard for the film of Haitian life. The oldest of eight siblings, his childhood was filled with elaborate games that would become the inspiration for many of his best-known works. His father would join in the games or lead the siblings and neighborhood friends, as many as 25 children, on weekend picnics. Those experiences inspired a series of paintings depicting children dressed up in adult costumes, and playful constructions of clowns or faces with various features formed by tropical fruit such as avocados and bananas. As an adult Alix spent nearly 18 years abroad, living in New York and Puerto Rico. In Puerto Rico he produced art including paper maché and paintings for a few exhibitions, and worked as a magazine illustrator and art authenticator in New York while perfecting his painting technique. In 1978, he told his sister he was returning to Haiti because, as he put it, “There is no inspiration here.” Preferring a simpler life, when Alix returned to Haiti he settled in Petit-Goâve, a port town southwest of Port- depict his siblings, a broad search of the family archives yielded just one photo of a young and intently gazing Alix, an amused and perhaps playful expression cast across his face like the light streaming in from a window.
