2013 Ac n o i t a d o m o c e guid S a int-Ma rtin-dIleed-eRRéé WALKING IN SAINT-MARTIN-DE-RÉ WELCOME TO ST-MARTIN-DE-RÉ Saint-Martin-de-Ré is Île de Ré’s erstwhile capital and its style today is in a class of its own. It grew around its port sheltered by its ramparts and has since become the place that nobody on holidays here or out on a stroll will want to miss. The narrow streets and alleyways conceal countless Île de Ré treasures and heritage: the Maison à colombage de la Vinatière (a 16th-century half-timbered house), Hôtel de Clerjotte (a Renaissance- style townhouse) and the Citadelle (where prisoners set off to forced-labour colonies) are only three examples. The lively town centre is brimming with homes with a story to tell, café terraces where you can stop for a chat or a laugh, and a port where fishermen and yachters moor side by side. Saint-Martin-de-Ré is teeming with history, and is a great place to unwind and enjoy. The shops and galleries here encapsulate something about its distinctive lifestyle year round, and the market and restaurants are proud to flaunt this land’s fresh produce. Saint-Martin de Ré’s fortifications, and 11 other prominent sites in Vauban earned UNESCO listing on 7 July 2008. 2 ST-MARTIN-DE-RÉ EARNS FAMILLE PLUS LABEL The services: Saint-Martin-de-Ré has embarked on a drive backed by its Tourist Office to promote the Famille Plus label, as a member of the French association of listedresort and tourist town mayors, so it would like to thank these establishments for their efforts to upgrade family-oriented amenities: • Accommodation: Camping des Maraises, Camping des Remparts, Bois SaintMartin, Clos des Pins (guest rooms), La Baronnie Hôtel & Spa, Hôtel de Toiras, Hôtel du Port, Pierre & Vacances (tourist residence), Clos Rhéa (furnished accommodation) and Holiday Village Belambra. • Restaurants: A côté de chez Fred, L’Atelier Bio, Crêperie de l’Ilot, La Marine and La Sarrazine. • Service providers: Bicycle hire, Cyclo-Surf, Maison des Vélocypèdes, Liberty Cycles,Yoo Too, La Cible sailing school, Ernest Cognacq museum and “Les Ânes en Culotte” (donkeys). Under this initiative, the Tourist Office opened an area for children premises in the Spring of 2008. It features games, colouring books, a table and chairs – plus a changing table with the necessary equipment. Famille Plus resorts in Charente-Maritime: Royan - Saint-Georges de Didonne - Saint-Martin de Ré. The La Rochelle-Ile de Ré PASS, for a smart exploration ! Discover the fortifications of Saint-Martin-de-Ré (approximately 30 min) A Ocean front A Saint-Martin de Ré is situated on the north coast of the island facing the beaches of Vendée (department). On the left hand side west, when the sky is clear, it’s possible to see the “Phare des Baleines” (light house), the belltower of Ars en Ré and Loix peninsula. On the ocean front, defense is easy. The soldiers were in their shooting position, kneeling down, resting on the top of the parapet. The wall is 8 meters high and 2 meters wide. Punctuating the oceanfront, you may see battlements in which canons were established. 2 3 B 4 6 B Fortifications The view from the top enables to see the organization of all the defense. You may be able to discover the slope (glacis) preserved from urbanization, the green meadows, visible beyond the walls, the curtain wall and the half moons. The construction of the fortifications started in 1681 and took ten years. 12,000 workmen were necessary to erect the walls. C Campani gate Built in 1685, it’s one of the two huge gates of the town, which allowed circulation to either east or west of the island. The enormous gate was closed by a portcullis and a double wooden doors with nail inserts. Outside, on the top of the door, you may be able to see ornamental sculptures, and in particular, a face placed in a radiant sun (fronton) as the symbol of King Louis the XIVth. Discover the old town (approximately 1h) 1 Hotel de Clerjotte This house from the XV century is probably the only building “Renaissance” on the whole island. It was used as an arsenal during religious wars. Today it’s Saint Martin’s Museum. . th 2 The harbour Thanks to the export of salt and wine, produced on the island, the city has had an active commercial harbour since medieval times. It was alternately a commercial and fishing harbour, a military harbour, then the official departure point for convicts. Today it’s the most important marina of the island. 1 C 5 4 The church The church is composed of several construction styles. The most interesting part is the one in ruins, dating from the XIVth century (flamboyant gothic style). It’s a fortified church on which you may notice a parapet walk and battlements to defend the city. This edifice, being very high and very important was a possible target for enemies and the city’s governor has it destroyed. The church has been rebuilt several times. The bell tower dates from the end of XVIIIth century. 5 The town hall This huge building was built in the XVIIIth century upon the old catholic graveyard of the town. It was used first by the army (marine), then as an administrative office for the civilian poorhouse. In 1907, it became the town hall. Facing the building, the square is the ancient drill ground settled here in 1685 by Vauban. 6 The Vinatiere house One of the oldest house of the town, dating from the XVIth century. Its façade is dedicated to the wine growing: red color, virginian creeper, sculpted wood. 3 The convict’s map Painted by a convict during his imprisonment, this map shows the important past of the town as the official departure point towards Guyana. The island is 31 kilometers long and 5 km wide. 3 Open year round MAP 1 LE CLOS ST-MARTIN ★★★★ & SPA Exceptionnaly well located, sits on the port of Saint-Martin-deRé, L’Hôtel de Toiras is a splendid 17th century former ship owner’s house. 1, quai Job Foran and 5, rue du Général Lapasset 17410 St-Martin-de-Ré Tel. 05 46 35 40 32 [email protected] www.hotel-de-toiras.com www.villa-clarisse.com The decoration in each of the 20 rooms and suites is unique and the views of the port and garden are breathtaking.
