Verbs followed by à or de + Infinitive
Some verbs take the prepositions à or de, followed by an infinitive. Here are a few examples:
commencer à/de
finir de
aider à
accepter de
s’entraîner à
permettre de
réussir à
décider de
apprendre à
essayer de
continuer à/de
De becomes d’ in front of a vowel or a silent h.
Other verbs are used with a direct object and an indirect object introduced by the prepositon de or à, followed by a noun or an infinitive. Here are some common
verbs that follow this pattern:
encourager qn à qch / qn à faire qch – to incite somebody to something / to encourage somebody to do something
forcer qn à qch / qn à faire qch – to force somebody to do something
habituer qn à qch / qn à faire qch – to get somebody used to something / somebody used to doing something
inviter qn à qch / qn à faire qch – to invite somebody to something / somebody to do something
obliger qn à faire qch – to oblige/require somebody to do something
pousser qn à qch / qn à faire qch – to drive or push somebody towards something / to urge/drive/push somebody to do something
accuser qn de qch / qn de faire qch – to accuse somebody of something / somebody of doing something
convaincre qn de qch / qn de faire qch – to convince somebody of something / somebody to do something
dissuader qn de qch / qn de faire qch – to dissuade somebody from something / somebody from doing something
informer qn de qch – to inform somebody of/about something
persuader qn de qch / qn de faire qch – to persuade somebody of something / somebody to do something
soupçonner qn de qch / qn de faire qch – to suspect somebody of something / somebody of doing something
supplier qn de faire qch – to beg/implore somebody to do something
ex: J’ai invité Yann à la fête.
I invited Yann to the party.
On les soupçonne de vol.
They are suspected of theft.
J’ai invité Yann à venir avec nous.
I invited Yann to come with us.
On les soupçonne de voler leur patron.
They are suspected of stealing from their boss.

Still other verbs are used with a direct object and an indirect object introduced by the prepositon à, followed by a noun; or they can be used with two indirect objects,
the first one introduced by the prepositon à, followed by a noun, and the second one introduced by the prepositon de, followed by an infinitive. Here are some
common verbs that follow this pattern:
commander qch à qn / à qn de faire qch – to order something from somebody / somebody to do something
conseiller qch à qn / à qn de faire qch – to recommend something to somebody / to advise somebody to do something
demander qch à qn / à qn de faire qch – to ask somebody for something / somebody to do something
dire qch à qn / à qn de faire qch – to tell somebody something / somebody to do something
imposer qch à qn / à qn de faire qch – to impose something on somebody / on somebody to do something
interdire qch à qn / à qn de faire qch – to forbid somebody something / somebody to do something
proposer qch à qn / à qn de faire qch – to suggest something to somebody / that somebody do something
rappeler qch à qn / à qn de faire qch – to remind somebody of something / somebody to do sth
ex: Elle a conseillé ce docteur à Luc.
She recommended this doctor to Luc.
Rappelez-lui son rendez-vous.
Remind him of his appointment.
Elle a conseillé à Luc d’aller voir ce docteur.
She advised Luc to go see this doctor.
Rappelez-lui de partir plus tôt.
Remind him to leave earlier.
