The traditional practices of Lent we hear about in the gospel of Ash Wednesday are
the essentials for growth into the image of God’s Son — a greater love of God
(prayer), a more generous love of neighbour (alms giving), and a truer love of
ourselves (fasting). We recommit ourselves on Ash Wednesday to build our lives on
those three loves, so that we may more fully become all that God is calling us to be.
Please join us for Mass and to receive ashes on Wednesday, Feb. 10th, at 7pm.
THE SEASON OF LENT
LE CARÊME
Ash Wednesday is February 10th! Whatever you choose to do
during Lent should deepen your relationship with Jesus. Here are
some considerations:
Le Mercredi des Cendres est le 10 février. Ce que tu fais pendant le
Carême devrait approfondir ta relation avec Jésus. Quelques idées:
The Sacrament of Reconciliation/Confession is offered most
Saturdays from 4-4:30pm (check weekly bulletins). This brings focus
into our spiritual life and peace into our heart. All-Day Confessions
will be offered in our parish on Wednesday, March 9th from 9am11:30am; 1:30pm-4pm; and 6pm-8pm.
Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament takes place each First Friday of
the month. What an excellent way to “be with the Lord” as we adore
His sacred presence. Sign-up sheets are available to ensure that the
Blessed Sacrament will not be left alone during Adoration.
Spiritual reading allows our soul to be inspired through the writings
of Christian authors. The lives of the Saints could enhance our
spiritual life. Lent would be a good time to make a habit of picking
something up to read.
Fasting permits us to control our appetites. Many people limit the
size of their meals; some choose a day a week to limit themselves to
one normal meal and two smaller ones.
Abstinence - no meat, traditionally on Fridays.
Penance allows us to choose that which we will impose on ourselves
to keep us united to Jesus. Traditionally, penance means “giving up”
something that we enjoy.
Works of charity are developed from compassion that leads to an
action of social justice. Perhaps we may be motivated to put money
aside for the poor. We could help in a soup kitchen or maybe bring
something to church to put in the Saint Vincent de Paul donation
boxes which are located at all entrances. What a
wonderful work of charity to continue all year long!
Consider NOW what you might do to “Lift
Jesus High”...Lent is only a few days away.
There will be ONE bilingual Mass on Ash
Wednesday, February 10th at 7pm.
