South Shore Children’s Chorus Monthly Newsletter October 2013 _________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ “La version française parviendra par courriel.” de ce document vous Welcome to the 30th Season of the SSCC! Welcome back to all our returning members of the SSCC, and a warm welcome to all of our new members and their families. We all look forward to a wonderful year of great music making including an exciting anniversary concert in May, a recording session and an anniversary trip to Stowe, Vermont. The SSCC News is sent home the first or second Wednesday of each month. Please review the monthly newsletter carefully, as it contains important concert dates to be noted in your agendas and permission slips requiring parent/guardian signatures. A Word from Our Director Many thanks to all the parents who attended our parent orientation and mini-concert. A special thank you goes to those who volunteered to help on various committees. Please note the following helpful hints for rehearsals this year: 1) Participation and Attendance Please remember the importance of regular attendance at rehearsals and participation in concerts. We sing in harmony and every member is needed. Please communicate with me in advance if your child has a problem or a conflict with a choir event or performance. Try to avoid Wednesday when scheduling doctor/ dentist appointments and family parties. Don’t hesitate to call me if you have questions or concerns! 2) Newsletters, Permission Slips and Forms Please ask your child each week if he/she has any letters for you, i.e. the monthly newsletter. We will try to include articles in the “Chorister’s Corner” section that pertain to our choir members and reviews of our trips/festivals written by choir members so please encourage your child to read the Newsletter too! It is really important to return permission slips promptly. It will save us many phone calls and emails. Please return the Parent Information Form and Medical Form that were given out at the parent orientation. Don’t forget to indicate, on the information form, some areas where you might help us out this year. -1- 3) Wednesday Rehearsals Please remind your child to put his choir music and pencil in his school bag on Tuesday evening. A good chorister has his music at every rehearsal, with a pencil to mark his part. Make sure your child brings a good snack to eat before the rehearsal. Gr. 3-6 students should arrive by 4:05 to be ready by 4:15 and high school students can arrive around 5:00. They need to be in place at 5:15 p.m. 4) Transportation/ Address List You will soon receive a telephone and address list of all choir members. Please keep it handy and refer to it if you need help with transportation to rehearsals and/or special events. For further help, please call Mrs. Christiani. SSCC Fall Fun Day This year’s Fall Fun Day will be on Sunday, October 20th. This event is for all the choristers and will provide us the chance to sing together and get a head start on our Christmas season repertoire. We also will enjoy some fun Halloween activities and finish with a spaghetti supper. Good food, good music, and good friends – a great start to the new season. All we need is your participation. Please see the calendar of events for details. REHEARSAL MONITORS The efficient functioning of our choir depends on volunteers. Right now we have a need for rehearsal monitors. Rehearsal Monitors ensure the smooth coordination of the regular weekly rehearsals. It’s not only a great way to help out our children – it’s also a great way to meet some of the other choir families. Could you spare two or three afternoons this season? If so, please contact Erin Byrne at 514-550-7919. GLEE-K AUDITIONS Star Image Entertainment is presenting “Glee-K”songs from Glee on March 30th, 2014. The SSCC has been invited to do a medley of songs from Mama Mia. They are also looking for more solo singers and dancers. Auditions close on October 27th. For more information, e-mail [email protected] or call 514-978-5725. Chorister’s Corner In addition to being a means of communicating important information to parents of choristers, the SSCC News is intended to provide a forum for the choir members to share their opinions, news and views. If you have a story to share, please send it to Gabrielle Gaudreault at: [email protected] or pass it in to the rehearsal coordinator at a Wednesday practice. The newsletter is published on the first Wednesday of every month. For next month’s edition we are seeking reviews from choristers in French or English on the following topics: 1) Fall Fun Day 2) Fête Saint Lambert Days SSCC Helps The Lion`s Club and they help us! Many thanks go out to the SSCC Members and parents who took the time to help out at the Lions Club booth during the Fêtes St. Lambert Days. Working in teams of three, the children helped sell drinks, popcorn and cotton candy. At the SSCC at the Lions Club Dinner on October 1st, the Lions Club presented us with a cheque for $1,000 to support this year`s SSCC programme. Please refer to this sheet if you need to make alterations. Returning members: Make sure you return your uniform in the next two weeks if it doesn’t fit and you cannot alter it. If so, you may be issued another one. New members: You will receive your uniform shortly. Please remember to buy a boy’s plain long-sleeved white shirt. If you are able to help Sylvie Payette with -2- taking measurements at choir rehearsal, organizing uniforms etc., please call her at: 450-465-9473 SSCC WEBSITE The SSCC website is now up and running with many exciting new features, such as recordings and photos from past concerts and trips! It is an excellent resource, as you can also find important information, including the calendar of events and directions to the events’ locations. A big thank you to Lorraine Overall for putting this all together! If you have any suggestions for the website, please contact Lorraine Overall at 450-9234267. Concert Programme Advertisements Do you know a friendly dentist, doctor, hairdresser, accountant, restaurateur, or other business whom you could ask for a Programme Ad? The sale of advertisements is a vital source of revenue, which will help tremendously with the varied projects in which the South Shore Children’s Chorus is involved. We are asking every member to sell at least one advertisement. You are of course encouraged to sell as many as you can! This year there will be two souvenir programmes for which we need your help: Our in Cabaret in February and our Anniversary Concert in May. It has been our practice to obtain the same ad for both concert programmes at a cost of $60. The advantages are obvious: you only have to ask once and there is more benefit for the choir. So please, ask for an ad that is going to appear in both our programmes ($60 total). A $30.00 credit will be given to each family who brings in a paid advertisement for 2 concert programs ($60.00). We are looking for someone to help with the layout of the ads in our Cabaret programme. For more information, if you can help, please contact Jennifer Innes at 450-676-7862 by e-mail at [email protected]. We will provide you with a programme ad form to take to your client yourself. Please ask for a copy of their business card. We were one of many talented choirs and soloists all harmonizing to make breath-taking memories for each member of the audience in the hall. There was also an amazingly talented orchestra, complete with cellos, clarinets, flutes, pianos, xylophones, and many more diverse instruments. Everyone had a great time, along with some food backstage that was more than well-earned by our talented choristers! Talent Show Every year in June, The South Shore Children’s Chorus has a talent show to celebrate everyone’s talent in the choir. Anyone can participate to show off their talents. We’ve had singing, (LOTS of singing,) all kinds of dancing, playing of instruments, jokes, flower sticks, and so much more. There is food, drinks, joking, and everyone always has a great time! World Music Concert Also during the SSCC session of 2012-2013, we participated in the “World Music Concert” with all our choristers, as well as the St-Lambert Choral Society. We sang many excerpts from the Disney movie “The Lion King”, and it was a big hit with the audience. We also sang an infamous song, JaiHo! in which everyone got involved and had a great time performing. The applause in the room was exceptionally as loud as thunder that night, and it was all thanks to our three top members of the choir: Ron, Gabrielle, and Mrs. Christiani! - Syreena Kurtz -4- South Shore Children’s Chorus 2013-2014 Tentative Schedule Please mark these important dates on your calendar Veuillez noter ces dates importantes OCTOBER 2013 Wed.
