THE TATE MODERN
THE LATEST MODERN ART
MUSEUM IN LONDON
The Tate Modern is located on the
South bank of the Thames opposite
Saint Paul's cathedral.
It is an abandonned power station. It
was built after the Second World
War to provide electricity for the
City.
Inside, the building was just an
empty box. There were no floors, no
staircases, no interior walls.
Two Swiss architects transformed
this vast space into an art gallery.
It opened in the year 2000 and it has
become one of the most visited
galleries of modern art.
Visitors enjoy the works of art as
much as the architecture of the
building and the superb view across
the City of London.

THE TOWER OF LONDON
N° … Traitors Gate
The water-gate under St Thomas's Tower has
been known as 'Traitors' Gate' because the
prisoners accused of treason passed through
it. The journey of these important prisoners
was made by barge along the River Thames.
Often their journey would take them past
London Bridge where the heads of recently
executed traitors were displayed.
N°... The Bloody Tower
The very walls of the Bloody Tower contain some of the
bloody secrets of the history of the Tower of
London. The purpose of the Bloody Tower changed
according to the function of the Tower of London which
successively served as a fortress, a palace and a prison.
N°... The Ravens
Legend says that the kingdom and the Tower
will fall if the six resident ravens ever leave the
fortress.
N°... Tower Green
The function of the Tower
changed over the years and it
became a prison housing some
very important state prisoners
and as a place of trials, execution
and torture. The very mention of
the Tower of London could strike
terror into the hearts and the very
bones of powerful people in
England.
Prisoners
were
executed in public, either on
Tower Hill or Tower Green,
depending on their social rank.
N°... The White Tower
The basement of the White Tower
was believed to have housed the
notorious dungeon known as the
"Little Ease". This terrifying
chamber was built in the thickness
of the wall and measured just
1.2m square (4sq ft). The prisoner
of the 'Little Ease' could neither
sit, stand, nor lie, but was
compelled to serve his sentence in
a cramped and crouching position.
Guy Fawkes was imprisoned in
the ‘Little Ease’ following his
arrest for his part in the
Gunpowder plot on the 5th
November 1605.

In 1888, five women were murdered,
a serial killer was on the loose
and London was in panic…
Jack the Ripper:
a case that has never been solved.
Let’s see if you listened carefully to your guides!
Are you able to fill in the blanks with the following words?
suspects / Whitechapel /case / unlit / poor / prostitutes / maze / victims / built /
five / ripped / witnesses / Mary Jane Kelly / smoke / crime scene / Industrial Revolution /
polluted / throats / fog / pea soup / 19th / sewage / brutal / murderer / East End
Still today, more than a hundred and twenty years later, the case of Jack the Ripper
remains unsolved, mysterious and fascinating. Here are a few reasons why.
First of all, the ________ was never caught. The police was everywhere. The detectives
were tracking down _________, interrogating witnesses again and again. Yet, they were
unsuccessful: they never solved the _________. Nobody ever saw the murderer clearly, and the
descriptions given by the few _______________ were incomplete and often contradictory.
Secondly, Jack the Ripper killed only _____________ . Moreover, he killed them in a
horrible way: the _______ had their _________ cut and their abdomens ___________ open.
Finally, _____ women were murdered in four months and the fifth victim, _______
_______ _______, was killed in a very _______ way. After that, why did the crimes end? Did
something happen to the murderer himself?
Why was the Ripper able to disappear from the _____ _______ without leaving a trace?
In fact, the murders took place in a very special place at a very special time.
The ___ century corresponds to the __________ ____________. Many factories were
______ in the cities. As a consequence, London was very __________. The combination of the
______ of the factories and the _____ produced a very thick fog called “smog” or “____ _____” .
Sometimes, you couldn't even see your hand in front of your face!
All crimes took place in the ______________ district in the _____ _____ of London. This
was a very _____ area. At the time, there was no sanitation and people threw ________ in the
streets. Poor women became prostitutes on the street to survive. They were vulnerable because the
area was _______ and the streets looked like a ________.
