Meeting with local stakeholders to increase visibility

and BSU.
Following a successful Council meeting
organised and hosted by Azerbaijan Youth
Translators Association (AGTA - Azərbaycan
Gənc Tərcüməçilər Assosiasiyasının), FIT
President and members of the Executive
Council (Secretary General Sabine Colombe,
Vice Presidents Reiner Heard and Silvana
Marchetti) accompanied by Council Member
Ismayil Jabrayilov met with key stakeholders in
the translation, interpreting and terminology in
Azerbaijan.
Discussions were held with Director Afag
Masud of Azerbaijan Translation Centre (ATC),
Rector Samad Seyidov of Azerbaijan University
of Languages (ADU) and Rector Asif Hajiyev of Baku Slavic University
(BSU, photo not available at the time of press release). These talks covered
wide ranging topics including increase emphasis in translation, interpreting

Azerbaijan State
Television
and terminology as signalled by President Ilham Aliyev, training and
education, professional development, collaboration with local and regional
professional associations, and harmonising with international standards.
During all three meetings, President Liu emphasised the importance of high level translation,
interpreting and terminology in enhancing the image of Azerbaijan abroad. He also pointed out the
Federation’s global presence, resources and on-going collaboration with partners like CIUTI
(Conférence Internationale Permanente d’Instituts Universitaires de Traducteurs et Interprètes) are
accessible through collaboration with AGTA, local member of FIT.
Director Masud of ATC expressed particular interest in improving standards of practitioners both
state employees as well as those in the free market.
FIT emphasised the importance of strong professional associations in setting standards and will be
happy to provide expertise and work with ATC and the Azerbaijani government through AGTA in
developing a system based on international best practice appropriate to the Azerbaijani context.
Preparation will commence towards completing Memoranda of Understanding between ADU and
AGTA and BSU and AGTA.
